020: RILEY'S BEDROOM

MAYA SAT SHIVERING outside of Riley's bedroom window for about five minutes before she grew impatient and began tapping passive-aggressively on the glass. After receiving Riley's response as to why her window wasn't open, she had a slight bit of reassurance, but a confused thought still lingered in the air.

Even when Riley was at her Grandmother's one weekend when they were little, Maya was still able to crawl through her window and roam as she pleased throughout the house. Once the Matthews' got back, they enjoyed seeing all the sticky notes she left all over the place, i.e. "we need milk", "i love you guys", "Auggie, you're the best", "Topanga that lasagna was amazing", "yes, Mr. Matthews, i ate it all". Riley hasn't ever locked her window until now, and she needed to know what was up.

She could hear Riley's footsteps getting closer and closer to her bedroom before her door flew open and the brunette was there holding a Target shopping bag. She threw it onto her bed and started towards the window to let Maya inside. "It's cold today if you didn't already know." Maya sarcastically argued in a tone unrecognizable to herself. She never spoke like that to Riley and she immediately wanted to apologized without hesitation, why was she so irritated with Riley? She's never felt this way before.

"I know, I know." Riley didn't seem to understand the hint of irritation and laughed it off like it was nothing, but to Maya it wasn't nothing. "I forgot I locked it last night after you left. I went straight to sleep afterwards." She could be lying, Maya thought, but she also felt like there's no reason not to believe her also. "I picked up some of our own cookie dough so we can make some later, and I also grabbed a couple tee shirts," she paused while she rummaged through the plastic bag, "Thought this would look cute on you."

She tossed a shirt in Maya's direction that had a graphic of the Mothership album by Led Zeppelin across the front, which easily made her grin. Tearing off her jacket and hanging up on the back of Riley's door, she quickly threw it on. "Sick," She smiles as she poses in the mirror, "Did you have to ask your mom who Led Zeppelin were?"

"I'm not that stupid, I think." Riley laughs, pointing to the band's name on the shirt, "I just guessed."

"Well," Maya began, "You guessed correctly and I'm proud of you."

"I'm glad you like it." Riley continued to remove her clothing items out of the bag and began to organize them in her closet. "I'm sorry about yesterday, I didn't want to let it go unsaid." The room fell silent as Maya waited for her best friend to explain herself, "I-I was talking out of my behind, and I'm sorry. I should have never said what I said, I had just thought since it seemed like you weren't interested, I was gonna try and say 'Hi'. I never meant to hurt your feelings, I guess I just wasn't thinking about them like I should have. I hope Smackle isn't too mad." The disappointment in Riley's voice was enough to win Maya over, it was hard to not talk to Riley for more than a day because the two are basically inseparable when they're around each other. "She sounded like she was really angry."

Maya nodded her head up and down while running her fingers through the fur on one of Riley's pillows, "We both were, honestly. It wasn't cool, Riley, at all."

Riley threw her hands down by her sides, "And I feel horrible!"

"It's okay, Riley. It's okay, just think before you speak next time." Maya smiled kindly before pulling out her cell phone from her back pocket and checking her recent messages. Nothing from Just Friar, yet her heart rate still increased. "C'mere, Riles."

Maya outstretched her arms from her position on the bed, Riley left her closet and ran towards her best friends open arms. The two can't stay mad at each other for long, sooner or later they will be laughing and joking all over again like nothing ever happened. Riley squeezed her arms around Maya's torso, she could feel the rising and falling of her chest from how fast her heart was racing. The two stayed together for a few minutes before letting out a laugh. "I could never stay mad at you."

"Is it a good time to ask if we can go make our cookies now?" Riley smiled, taking her best friends hand and the cookie dough in the other.

"Sounds good to me."
