MARK DARCY ❪ Colin Firth ❫ : I don't think you're an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever's in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences. I realize when I met you at the Turkey Curry Buffet that I was unforgivably rude and wearing a reindeer jumper that my mother had given me the day before. But the thing is, um... what I'm trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact... perhaps despite appearances, I like you. Very much.

NICHOLAS CHAVEZ AND ISADORA MILLER : HOLLYWOOD'S SWEETHEARTS TURN SOURS
"After three years of red carpets and picture-perfect romance, Nicholas Chavez has called it quits with rising star Isadora Miller. Sources close to the actor claim it was his decision, citing 'irreconcilable differences.' Is this the final act for Hollywood's most enviable couple?"
Isadora stared at the magazine cover as though it had personally insulted her, which, in a way, it had. She'd grabbed it impulsively at the grocery store checkout, sandwiched between a bottle of wine and a frozen pizza. It wasn't even her usual reading material—too gossipy, too cruel—but the title had jumped out at her, slapping her across the face in bold, mocking letters.
Her initial reaction was absurdly practical: Why did they use that picture? The one of her storming out of his house, eyes red and lips pressed into a thin line. A more unflattering shot couldn't have been staged. Nicholas, on the other hand, looked maddeningly composed. Standing in the doorway, his face half-shadowed, he looked like the heartbroken hero of a romantic drama. It made her want to scream.
And cry. Which, predictably, she did the moment she slid into the driver's seat of her car. Tears streaming down her cheeks before she could stop them. But Isadora Miller did not cry. She didn't cry on set when directors screamed at her, didn't cry when she'd been passed over for roles she'd bled for, didn't cry when her phone lit up with rejection after rejection at the start of her career.
But she cried now, because this was different. Who she thought was the love of her life had walked out of her life in one night and left behind a version of herself she couldn't recognize.
And now, six months later, he was everywhere. On screens, in headlines, in the podcasts she played too often—she couldn't escape him, no matter how much she tried. Nicholas Chavez was Hollywood's golden boy, and she was just the ex-girlfriend, her name perpetually tied to his whether she liked it or not.
Seeing it printed in black and white, in language so brutal it felt clinical, made her chest tighten like a fist. The end of them had been ugly, yes, but not in the way the tabloids liked to paint it. There was no cheating scandal, no third-party betrayal. Just a final, fiery argument that left both of them raw and bleeding.
"You're impossible, Isadora," Nicholas had spat that night, his voice sharp with exhaustion as he stood across his living room, hands raking through his hair. "I can't keep—God, I can't keep trying to keep up with you."
"Trying to keep up with me?" she shot back, her voice shaking even as she tried to sound furious. "I've been trying to fight for us, and you—"
"Fight for what?" His laugh was bitter. "We fight constantly. And you always have to win, don't you? You don't leave room for anyone else in the damn room"
The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of her heart splintering in her chest.
"You want me gone?" she whispered after what felt like an eternity. "Fine. I'm gone."
He didn't stop her as she grabbed her coat and left. Didn't come after her, didn't call.
The fight itself had been ugly—more words than either of them meant, too sharp to take back, all of it culminating in the truth neither had said before then. He was done trying to be the Nicholas Chavez she wanted. And she was done pretending she wasn't falling apart at the seams.
It was supposed to be temporary. Breakups were always supposed to be temporary when love still lingered in the room, but this one had stayed. It had solidified into something public and permanent, something bigger than the two of them. His silence, in the days and weeks that followed, had been louder than any phone call ever could have been.
At first, the world had speculated kindly—maybe they were taking time, maybe they were working things out behind the scenes. Then the tabloids turned cruel, because they always did. There were photos of Nicholas alone in Los Angeles, one of him smiling for a fan while Isadora sat in her apartment in New York, too afraid to check her phone. Every image of him out in the world was another weight pressing onto her chest.
And now here she was, sitting in her car with a crumpled magazine in one hand and tears streaming down her face, replaying it all in her head like a bad movie she couldn't turn off.
That was the moment her phone buzzed.
She buried her face in her hands, but the sound of her phone buzzing broke through her misery. Sniffling, she reached for it, her thumb swiping across the screen before she'd even registered the name. Her chest was tight, her breaths shallow, her mind trapped in an endless loop of replayed conversations and fractured emotions.
"Isadora," came Tom Koch' voice — her manager—, brisk and self-assured, with just a hint of amusement, as though her personal crises were simply another line item on his to-do list. "I've got news."
She closed her eyes, leaning back against the headrest, her voice flat and hoarse from crying. "Unless it's about the world ending, I'm not interested."
"Better than that," Tom replied, unbothered by her tone. "They want you for the lead in the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days reboot."
The words hung in the air, impossible and heavy. For a moment, she thought she'd misheard him. "What?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You heard me," Tom replied, his tone brightening. "They want you. For the lead. It's a huge deal, Isadora. Career-defining. And before you ask, yes, I already said yes on your behalf."
Her stomach flipped, a mix of excitement and dread that left her momentarily speechless. She sat up straighter, the seatbelt pulling against her chest. "You... what? Tom, you can't just—"
"Oh, I can," he interrupted smoothly. "And I did. You're welcome."
Her hand clutched at the edge of the seat as his words began to sink in. The lead. A role that could change everything. A role that could cement her as more than just the girl who used to date Nicholas Chavez. It was what she'd been working toward for years. What she'd always wanted.
But the weight of it pressed down on her all at once—the scrutiny, the headlines, the inevitable whispers. And then, the realization crept in, sharp and cold.
Her voice trembled as she asked, "Who's the male lead?"
The silence stretched just long enough to confirm what she already knew.
Tom's voice was calm when he finally spoke, but it felt like the ground shifting beneath her.
"It's Nicholas."
NICHOLAS : you know, a part of me thought I'd be totally fine without you. but here we are, and i realize... i really didn't miss you."
ISADORA : oh really? because i was starting to think you couldn't breathe without me. that's cute.
NICHOLAS : well, turns out, i can breathe just fine. it's the not rolling my eyes part that's hard. you make it so easy, isadora.
ISADORA : i bet you say that to all the women.
NICHOLAS : it's a compliment, really. you're my favorite person to argue with.
ISADORA : that's the sweetest thing you've said in months. too bad it took a breakup to get you to say it.
