CHAPTER FIVE ✧・゚

A WHISPER OF HER NAME THROUGH THE NIGHT BREEZE, woke (Y/N) up from her so called rest laying her head on Lucy Gray's shoulder, rubbing the sleep from her eyes trying to wake herself up. It wasn't the best rest she's ever had, since her mind was buzzing with too many thoughts about tomorrow, and a certain male whom's she hasn't seen since the rebel bombing.
She carefully stood up from her place on the rocks, being mindful not to bump into anyone or step on hands, and picked up the ends of her jumpsuit dress, walking out around towards the fence at the back.
A figure stood on the other side of the fence, that was barely lit up by the dull lights hanging off the bars, and whispered her name out again, waving their ringed hand around to grab her attention.
Her own eyes went wide finally seeing who it was the more she got closer, and smiled in relief as Cassian came into view, looking just as relieved as she was seeing him. And because of that, she picked up her speed to run over to him quickly.
When she arrived her chest was moving up and down fast, and gripped the fence with both hands tightly, where he was stood leant over a bit, "You're alive." She breathed out, "I was so worried when I couldn't find you afterwards-"
Cassian shushed her softly returning the smile with a warm one of his own, fingers brushing along hers slowly, "M'alright, love." He rasped in a throaty voice, it dropping lower, "Those bombs. They have changed everything. They blew the walls out. So that means you can escape up in the stands."
She listened to his explanation closely, sometimes flickering her gaze to their hands, or his eyes and back over to the tributes nervously, hoping if someone woke up it would be Lucy Gray or Jessup right now.
"There's a hole down in the floor. It leads down to some tunnels. I've tried it, and you, and Lucy Gray can disappear down there." He continues to tell her in a whispering tone, "So the moment you hear that bell ring, you ignore the weapons in the middle and you run as fast as you can for that hole. You find a place to hide down below."
Her forehead creased with a heavy frown, pursing her lips in thought for a second, "If I get a bow and arrow in hand, I'll make Lucy Gray's chances at winning higher." She retorted stubbornly, and fiddled with the end of her messy braid, "That's all that matters."
He shakes his head rapidly, having to stop himself from reaching out to touch her by gripping the fence above where she was doing so, "No, (Y/N). The moment that bell rings, you can't trust anyone. You need to run with your sister, and stay put."
She sighed a bit but nodded her head in understanding, but knew in the back of her mind she'd get that weapon either way, "Thank you." She wavered out, swallowing the lump in her throat staring into his blue eyes, the only thing visible in the dark, "For taking care of me. For helping me, and being here for me."
"I can't let you die." He rasped in a whisper, sliding his larger hand down from the fence to on top of hers, and interlaced his fingers through hers, giving a soft squeeze, "You saved me, (Y/N). You came back for me. Back for my twin. And for that, I owe you my life."
Her bottom lip started to tremble under the weight of all the emotions she was feeling, and before she could stop it, tears were rolling down her cheeks. She's never cried in front of anyone before, not even Lucy Gray, but for some reason being around Cassian made her feel weak. But in a good way where she wanted more of it.
"I'm sorry-" She whimpered tearfully, turning her head to the side so he couldn't see how pitiful she was being, and sniffled through her tears, "It's just, with everything going on, and what's going to happen tomorrow-"
He instantly was cooing softly in reassurance, "Hey, hey. It's okay, darling. It's okay." He gently tilted her chin back to him, heart aching seeing her falling apart like this, and used his thumbs to wipe away her tears, rubbing them under her eyes comforting.
"I don't want to die. But I also don't want Lucy Gray to die also." She admitted releasing a tremulous breath, leaning her cheek into his palm cupping the side of her face, taking in the warmth while it lasted between them.
He pressed his forehead onto the bar she was leaning on, making their forehead only be separated by metal, "I am going to get you out of here. Coryo would help Lucy Gray too." He assured wiping away some more tears, "I won't let anything happen to you. I promise."
She scrunched her wet eyes closed for a second, feeling more tears drop down onto her cheeks, and opened back up to gaze into his soft eyes, "Cass," She whispered weakly, knowing how these games worked, "Only one of us will be the victor, and it has to be Lucy Gray-"
He shakes his head giving her a firm look that made his brows crease, and trailed his thumb on her cheek down to her lips, pressing it gently on them to quiet her. She felt her lower stomach stir at this, and squeezed the fence more to keep herself up.
"I don't care about the rules. I don't care if there's supposed to be only one victor." He began to voice in a sharp tone, intensely gazing at her bottom lip that he was rubbing his ringed thumb over, "The rules mean shit to me. The only thing I truly want, is for you to be free and safe from this nightmare. That's all I need. And I'll make sure you get that, no matter the cost."
(Y/N) pressed her lips gently onto his thumb still lingering on them, before he pulled back trying to control himself. She gazed into his blue eyes holding fondness for her, getting lost in the blueness of them, as she gulped feeling how close he was to her now.
She didn't even realise her head was moving forward through the small gaps of the fence, nose gently grazing his as she could feel his warm breath caressing her face. However just as their lips go to brush against each others, Cassian looked down suddenly, making her heart break and stepped back a bit embarrassed.
It's not like he didn't want to kiss her till they couldn't breath, or take her right there and then, but he still needed to reassure himself that her feeling for him were true, and not just something in the heat of the moment thing. He was sure it was real, but still needed clarification from her.
And so he licked his bottom lip nervously, glancing back up at her, blue eyes searching (E/C) ones closely, "Is... is this real?" He asked in a barely audible voice, a desperateness lingering behind it, "Just tell me, if I'm gonna risk everything. That song-"
"That song was just outta my head. That's all." She cut him off, accent heavily coating her words, as she reassured him and lifted her head back up, "I'm not the best at expressing how I feel, so that song did it for me."
He pursed his lips in thought nodding his head slowly, and brushed his thumb over the inside of her wrist. He reached into his jackets pocket, and pulled out a small metal compact, "Here. You take this." He gently slipped it into her smaller hands.
Her eyes went wide seeing what was now in them, her hands being over the top of his through the gaps in the fence, "No, Cass. I can't-" She frantically protested, but he just shushed her softly.
"It's not a gift, love." He interrupted her swiftly, "It's a loan. Don't touch what's in there. Don't even breathe it in because small amounts can be deadly." He warns cupping the side of her face sniffling, "Okay? I have seen what war does to people. I have seen it. And there will come a time when you need this. When you need to act."
She bit her trembling bottom lip again feeling the heavy weight on her shoulders worsen, teary gaze glancing from the object in her hands to his warm, tender eyes staring down at her. She pushed her forehead forward a bit, making his fall on hers through the small gap, feeling each others skin for a few seconds.
"We're gonna win this, alright? (Y/N)." Cassian whispered just inches from her parted lips, hand finding hers that wasn't holding onto the metal to bring it up to his mouth, pressing a hard kiss against the back of it, "We're going to win this together. To whatever end, Fireheart."
A new sense of hope bloomed within her chest hearing his words, and the nickname that most would call her sometimes. She gripped onto the compact tighter, a determined gleam in her eyes that had him smirking pleased, "And now, the games begin."

ALL THE TRIBUTES WERE LEAD ROUGHLY INTO THE ARENA, the day of the Hunger Games finally approaching, as everyone was getting ready for it. All the mentors were watching on the massive screens in the academy, the Snow brothers paying attention the most watching for their girls on the Tv's.
(Y/N) made sure her jumpsuit dress wouldn't effect her running, so it was a bit ripped at the button now exposing off her black boots. She also made sure her messy braid wasn't in her face, so it now was over her back, and kept the object Cass gave her safe hidden away.
She kept her gaze down walking into the arena the same way she did with Cassian, her sister right by her side giving her a confident side glance, and would sometimes gaze her pinky against (Y/N)'s to assure her more, seeing how quiet she was being.
"Enjoy the show!" The automatic voice was back again, just as they passed the turmoils once more in their lifetime, and hopefully it would be the only other time the sisters, and the tributes did.
Wovey came up beside the (H/C) haired girl glancing over the arena's weapons when they entered, rising her hand to grab the older girls ones, causing her to turn her attention. Wovey smiled sweetly up at her, before she was shoved away by a peacekeeper, hand slipping from the girls one.
Another two came up behind the siblings jamming their guns into the girls back, separating them briefly which had Lucy Gray panicking, but saw (Y/N)'s reassuring gaze that she shot, before they were forced to stand in the center of two red dots, on either side of the destroyed arena.
"Stand on your mark or you will be shot." One of the peacekeepers announced to all the tributes, causing them to straighten up and follow what was said, not moving from their selected spots.
Her narrowed down (E/C) eyes quickly scanned over what was left of the arena, watching Reaper be shoved towards a marker, and counted all the tributes in her head. She gaze shifted to a familiar looking object laying on one of the rocks, making her feet shift in the red spot, knowing she needed to get that weapon.
She tried to calm her breathing down as she was panicking, and needed to relax before the game started, knowing she'd need to protect the two from her district. However, she felt sick to her stomach when she notice Marcus, the tribute to Sejanus, hanging from the beams by the wrists.
Just then the countdown started playing through the speakers, making her eyes closed for a few seconds to ease her fast heart beat, and block out everything else. That was until she slowly turned around, a glare on her face looking straight into the camera hidden in the walls, knowing who was currently watching her.
"Three... two... one."
The bell now went off to signal the start of the games, causing most of the tributes to run forward into the middle, grabbing whatever weapon they could to defend themselves.
A figure came up running to (Y/N) on her side pretty fast that had her yelping, and trying to dodge, but relaxed realising it was Lucy Gray, her wide eyes meeting the other girls (E/C) ones, carrying something in her hands.
"We need to find Jessup and run!" Lucy Gray exclaimed over the loud noise of the tributes killing each other a few meters away from them, passing over the bow and arrow she manged to grab for her sister, "Take this and use it!"
(Y/N) knew she was not listening to Cassian's words from last night, the moment she took the weapon into her hands, the bow slipping into them like it was part of her. She placed an arrow on the string, and backed up Lucy Gray behind her, protecting the girl from the tributes that she knew would attack soon.
"Jessup!" Lucy Gray screamed searching the area frantically for their missing friend, her hands grasping onto her sisters dirty sleeves of her dress, fearing the worst not seeing him, "Jessup!"
The (H/C) haired girl kept nudging her sister back away from the rocks, breathing heavily watching the others murder each other with the weapons. Her senses were alerted more, when Reaper came charging at them with a weapon, swinging to land a hit on them.
She quickly acted by blocking the weapon with the end of the bow she had with a yell, giving enough time for the girls to duck out of the way, and turned to see he was standing in front of Dill, protecting her from another tribute.
Not so different, huh. She thought to herself seeing that, letting the string of the bow go, as the arrow spilled up into the inside of it. She sharply glanced at Lucy Gray panting, and saw her nodding her head to signal she was alright.
"Jessup!" The two shout out again in hopes to find him, voice's holding eagerness as they moved carefully away from the middle of the arena, "Jessup!"
Coral now charged at the siblings from the side carrying a trident, causing (Y/N) to shove Lucy Gray out of the way, and just dodge the weapon coming at her. She jumped back when Coral attempted to stab her in the stomach, giving her time to draw the bowstring back, muscles coiling with controlled strength, and shot the arrow directly at Coral's foot, making the other howl in pain stumbling backwards.
Seeing Coral was discrated with pulling out the arrow stuck in her foot, (Y/N) frantically searched for her sister wondering where she was, heavy breaths leaving her mouth as she spotted Lucy Gray over near the other tributes. Her eyes went wide in horror as one of the male tributes went to aim a hit at her sister.
"Lucy Gray, duck!" She shouted in warning running over to where the said girl was, who listened watching as (Y/N) pulled back the bowstring and shot the male straight in the chest, knocking him back over and most likely dead.
Lucy Gray stumbled back up into her the girls side, quickly wrapping one arm around her shoulders in thanks, before she felt (Y/N) pulling her back, and took her wrist to tug her along, "There he is!" She exclaimed pointing at Jessup over the rock, "C'mon!"
"Jessup!" The girls screamed frantically when they saw him on the ground looking lost, and sprinted to where he was. Lucy Gray grabbed one of his arms, and yanked him out to his feet, "We gotta go! We gotta go!"
(Y/N) slanged over the bow around her shoulders knowing Lucy Gray needed help carrying Jessup, giving one last look at the camera that seemed to pointing directly at her, before taking Jessup's other arm, and placed it over her, helping him run.
The trio all ran the best they could hearing the other tributes charging at them from behind, not taking time to glance back as they needed to survive right mow. They jumped into the hole, sliding down the broken rubble on the floor, before running through the tunnel with flickering lights.
A door on the brick wall made them all come to a sudden spot, as (Y/N) left Jessup with Lucy Gray for a moment, and tried to use her hands to open the metal, digging her boots into the edge of it. But it wouldn't budge nor open, causing her to yell annoyed and start to forcefully kick it, only managing to get open a small enough hole for them to crawl through.
Her nose flared when she heard some of the tributes yelling voices now in the tunnels, and quickly faced the other two behind her, "You two go in first! Quick!" She urged helping Jessup to the door, making sure Lucy Gray crawled in first, then the barely standing male next.
The eighteen year old when it last making sure her weapon wasn't damage, knowing she just fits into the small hole and began to crawl through. Her sister pulled her up to her foot once she made it to the other side, and tugged her back when another a girl tried to slide in with them.
However her foot was caught by one of the other tributes, causing (Y/N) to straight away reach for her bow wanting to help, but feeling Lucy Gray's shaking hand on top of hers, made the girl pause and see her nervously shaking her head no.
The girl was pulled out of the hole despite her flailing about, and a second later a scream was heard, causing the trio to quickly turn around from the entry, running more down into the hole they crawled into.
"Hey, Lumberjack" Coral's taunting voice was heard from outside the hole, standing in the barely lit tunnel with a few more tributes holding a weapon, "Get in there and her out! We need to kill the Mockingjay rnjbhgirl if we stand a chance!"
He scoffed shooting her a pointed look, "I'm not sticking my head in there!" He sneered back crossing his arms over his chest, and knocked on the broken metal door, "She could be waiting with that bow of hers!"
(Y/N) listened to what they were saying through the walls, and heard them eventually walk away to probably wait them out upstairs. She sighed heavily finally feeling a moment of peace in the orange lit room, her eyes glancing over to Lucy Gray and Jessup sitting on the ground together against a pole.
Her brows furrowed worriedly hearing Jessup's pained noises, and saw how sweaty he looked. He didn't look well, and it cornered her deeply. She bent down to his height, and touched the back of her hand to his forehead, wincing a bit feeling how warm he was.
"Get some rest, Jessup." She whispered comfortingly watching his eyes trying to flutter open feeling her touch, and ran a comforting hand down his shoulder, sharing a look with Lucy Gray, "We'll be here to keep watch for now. It's okay."
He mumbled something inauable to the sisters ears, as he rested his head on Lucy Gray's shoulder, and slowly fell back asleep, not knowing how dangerous he would become soon for the girls.
She sat down on the other side of Lucy Gray who wanted to sleep also, causing her hand to gently press the girls head onto her shoulder. Lucy Gray perked up at small smile, and nuzzled up to her sister, instantly feeling safe and protected from the current situation they were in.
While the two slept soundlessly beside her, (Y/N) was rubbing her thumb over the top of the bow, it being crafted from sleek, polished wood. Her own lips split into a fond grin spotting the initials of a certain Snow brother, and run her fingers along the C.S, wishing this dreadful game to be over already.
