❝ WELCOME TO THE CAPITOL, DARLING. ❞
CHAPTER TWO ✧・゚

THE TRAIN CARRYING THE TRIBUTES ROLLED IN STEADY, arriving at the station where they would be dumped off, and move onto another transportation to actually get to where they would wait till the horror games started.
Cassian and Coriolanus were both waiting at that same station to meet their girl tributes, wearing the red outfit that all mentors had on. Their blue eyes stayed on the training coming to a stop, hands holding flowers in their hands fiddling with it.
Unlike his twin brother, Cass decided to bring his tribute a red rose, and a baked cookie that had made himself. Surprisingly enough, his grandmother had manged to get some ingredients for it, and now he had one inside a cloth for the girl to eat.
"I can't believe you also brought her food, Cass." Coryo mumbled to the said male, eyeing him off with a slight amused smile fiddling with the white rose in his hand.
Cass didn't reply to his brother, only giving him an eye roll as his attention was on the train, watching a few peacekeepers step out from the carriages, most likely in the ones the tributes were in.
The two share a look with one another, hands folding behind their backs to now start walking down the station's platform, all the way down to where the trains doors were opening, and letting out the tributes.
They tried to find the girls coming out from the train carriages, not having any lucky seeing everyone else but them. That was till familiar dresses came into view, Jessup helping (Y/N) down from the train as Lucy Gray was already down on the platform.
(Y/N) thanked Jessup with a gentle pat on the forearm, boots touching the platform as Lucy Gray steadied her, and she brushed off her jumpsuit dress from the dust she gained sitting in the dirty train.
Lucy Gray noticed the two Snow brothers eyes on them closely from where they stood, her arm coming up to pull (Y/N) back from fixing her dress, and nudge her forward seeing how the slightly taller one smiled directly at her.
She shot Lucy Gray a confused look as to why she was pushed first away, braid flying over her shoulder when she looked around, and felt her breath catch in her throat noticing who indeed was staring at her.
Cassian's hair was blonde and wavy sitting on his head perfectly despite it looking messy, his red formal outfit fitting around his figure well that showed his well defined muscles when he moved.
He straight away noticed the girl, leaving his brother side as he went to Lucy Gray. Cass approached the in awe girl near the train, her now realising how handsome he really was, his blonde hair making his even brighter blue eyes stand out.
"Welcome to the Capitol, darling." His accented voice flowed out of his smiling mouth, holding up the red rose for her first to take, "I thought you might like something to eat also." He added softly revealing the cloth that held the baked treat.
(Y/N) didn't even know how to react, having never been treated like this by a male before. Her wide eyes flickered from his face, and back to the things in his hands.
"Ah, thanks I guess?" She wavered out, reaching forward to take the flower and food into her hands, feeling how his warm fingers brushed against hers.
She placed the roses steam in between her lips for a few seconds, his eyes following the movement, as she unwrapped the cookie to taste it.
"You do this to everyone you meet?" She questioned amused, biting into the food once the rose was back in her hand, and hummed liking the tase of it.
Cassian chuckled shyly already liking her attitude, "No. Only the ones that really leave me impressed." He playfully replied, throwing a wink at her, as she hummed again finishing off the food he gave her, using the cloth to wipe her hands.
He took a minute to observe her as she stood in front. Her arm muscles were a bit defined underneath the long sleeve, showing him that maybe she trained with something like a bow and arrow to get it that way. Her boots didn't give her that much height, since he was still towering over her.
His gaze traced the contours of her outfit, a delicate dance of colors and fabrics that seemed to mirror the essence of her personality. The way the fabric clung to her figure suggested confidence, while the choice of colors hinted at a vibrant spirit.
His eyes moved upward, taking in the details of her face. The soft curve of her lips, the expressive arch of her eyebrows, and the depth of her eyes revealed a story that begged to be discovered. There was an air of quiet elegance about her.
He had a feeling that maybe she might survive, if he helped her that is, and maybe if she got her hands on a bow, then that would push up her chances also.
Cassian found himself once more entranced by the girl. He thought she was insanely gorgeous, even if her skin was covered in bruises, marks and dirt from where she came from.
"You look like you shouldn't be here." (Y/N) broke the silence between them, handing him the cloth back to spin around the rose in her hand mindlessly.
He fiddled with the ring on his finger, eyes flickering to his brother most likely getting the same talk as him from Lucy Gray, "Well, I shouldn't," He chuckled looking back to her amused, "but I'm your mentor. That means I'm obliged to come and see you."
"Interesting. A rebel, perhaps?" She commented not missing the way his nose scrunched up at that term, and she found herself smiling a bit, "What does my mentor do beside bring me roses and a cookie?"
"I do my best to take care of you." He answered in a bit of a flirtatious tone, tilting his head down to look at her more, which had a few strains of his hair falling onto his forehead, "And that, I can assure you, I will do."
Her lips parted again in slight surprise, staring up at him as he stared right back at her. She was taken aback at how kind, and gentle he was being with her. She always thought majority of the Capitol males' were pigs, and that's it. But Cassian was different, that much she could tell already.
A girl was thrown out of one of the train cars hearing her yells of protest, causing the pair to break eye contact and look over at the commotion. Peacekeepers bent down to grab her by the arms, starting to drag her away against her own will.
"Good luck with that, honey." (Y/N) spoke in her accented voice brining back his attention, holding up the rose to her nose to smell it looking at him, before walking off with Jessup and Lucy Gray, holding her own white rose.
Cassian wanted to reach out and grab her, suddenly finding the urge to go along with her, and shared a look with Coriolanus, who nodded motioning to the carts of the train. They followed all the tributes, watching peacekeepers forcing them inside of a truck now.
One of the tributes tried to make a run for it off to the side when they were going into the truck, but the few peacekeepers ran after him to stop him. When they weren't looking the Snow brothers ran inside the truck, going to the back hiding their faces to the peacekeepers wouldn't recognize them.
The peacekeepers threw the tribute that tried to run off into the truck, before slamming the door shuts, the vehicle now driving away. And when that happened, the brothers turned around to face all the tributes, gulping seeing them all scowling at them, expect for the two girls who would be their tributes.
(Y/N) sat down in the bumping truck in the middle of Lucy Gray and Jessup, feeling her sisters arm around her waist a little bit for comfort. She placed the rose Cass gave her into her jumpsuit dress pocket to display it, and looked at the male surprised, never thinking he would follow her into this death trap.
Cassian made sure to keep his brother a bit behind his arm not liking the evil stares on them, but then again he didn't blame them for that. His blue eyes flicker over everyone, landing on (Y/N) with Lucy Gray last, "Hi." He breathed breaking the silence, "Nice to meet you all."
"What's the matter, pretty boy?" Reaper asked him standing up in the truck, being at the back of the group all staring the brothers down, "You two in the wrong cage?"
A few strains of blonde eye fell over Cassian's forehead, him having no time to fix it as he was worried the tributes would do something to Coryo standing beside him, "No we're not." He answered swiftly, "This cage is delightful."
His blue eyes go wide a bit in alarm when Reaper storms up to them, slamming his elbow into his chest making Cass groan as his back hits the truck's wall, "I will kill you right now."
"He'll do it." Dill spoke up after coughing a bit, gaining looks from everyone inside the truck, "Reaper killed a peacekeeper back in district 11."
Coriolanus' blood ran cold watching his twin being manhandled, not being able to do anything as Cass held out a hand for him to stop. However, their worried spiked up hearing the comments from some other tributes, all agreeing to kill them.
"Ya'll got family back home?" (Y/N) finally intervened not liking how her mentor was getting treated, and felt Lucy Gray shifted beside her most likely watching Coryo, "Kill them if you hurt those brothers. Then you." She shrugged, tilting her head to the side, braid following the movement, "Besides, their mine and my sisters mentors. We might need them."
Coral frowned turning her head to look at the two sisters next to Jessup on the floor, "How come you two get menders?" She asked bitterly, not saying the word right.
"Mentor." Coriolanus corrected her, making his brother want to say something but was pushed more against the truck by Reaper, "You all get one."
Coral scoffed standing up from her place on the floor, and slowly approached the two panicking twins, "Oh, and we're supposed to trust you on that, right?" She sneered, sharing looks with another tridube beside her.
"Me and my brother, we're just here to help you." Cassian nervously chuckled out, feeling Reapers hold get stronger on him as he throws (Y/N) a small smirk, his face covered a bit by the trucks shadow.
Coral kneeled down in front of the two sisters, making Lucy Gray's arm around (Y/N)'s waist get tighter, a warning look over her face looking at Coral, "Why does the mocking jay girl and the rainbow girl here get special treatment?"
Before anyone could say anything in answer, the truck came to a sudden stop. It suddenly felt like the back of the truck was being tipped over, causing everyone inside to jolt at the movement.
(Y/N) quickly pulled Lucy Gray up to push her towards Coriolanus knowing she wouldn't be able to hold them both, and fell into Cassian's arms, latching onto his stronger body. He wrapped a tight arm around her waist, and kept the other holding onto the truck, making sure she was pressed against his side.
Her fingers dig into his side that she was clinging onto, looking over her shoulder to see the back doors opening up. She yelled a bit when Lucy Gray and Coriolanus went down, taking them two also out, the four sliding out and landed harshly on the rocks below.
"Oh! Ouch! Well, let's give them a chance to stand up and catch their breath." Lucretius Lucky Flickerman spoke into the microphone he had, staring at the camera filming him, "I'm jealous of that entrance."
Cassian took the heat of the fall on the rough floor, making sure (Y/N) was on his chest to not cause her harm. He groaned lifting his head up a bit, reaching a hand to cup the side of her face a bit, "Are you alright?" He croaked out, feeling the stares of the people outside the cage now.
"Y-yeah, thank you." She nodded a bit relaxing into the unfamiliar but comforting touch from him, as she pressed her palms onto his chest to push herself up, and stood up straight. She brushed over her outfit, worries easy seeing Lucy Gray alright and safe with their other mentor across from them.
Cass stood up from the floor ignoring how he knew he'd have bruising later, his anxiety spiking up at the interviewer trying to speak to him, and all the unwanted eyes watching them from behind the cages bars.
"Hello, sir! You in the red!" Flickerman called out to the heavily breathing Cassian, speaking more into the microphone to be heard through the area, "Who are you and why are you in there with them? We're live!"
(Y/N) glanced over to the male in question seeing how he was panicking, and not answering Flickerman. She stepped forward to hesitantly, but gently slip her fingers in between his warm ones, grabbing his attention instantly.
"It's okay. Breath, Cass." She whispered reassuringly, using the nickname she heard a few call him before, staring up into his wide eyes, and squeezed his hand, "Own it."
He squeezed back briefly calming himself down, looking over the environment inside the cage, "(Y/N) Archeron," He started in a deeper octave, hand slipping from hers to stare into her eyes now, "may I introduce you to my neighbors?"
She didn't say anything expect for a faint head nod, causing him to take the rose from her, breaking the steam off. Without breaking intense eye contact, he gently placed the rose behind her ear, touch lingering for a few more seconds.
Her stomach filled with butterflies as he did this, and looked down to the hand he held out for her. She heisted knowing they'd be in front of a camera together, but pushed away her doubt and grabbed his larger hand tightly, walking over to the fence now.
"Hey. How do you do? My name is Cassian Snow, twin brother of Coriolanus Snow." He began to introduce to the two kids standing on the other side of the fence, gesturing to his brother talking to another interviewer with Lucy Gray, "And this is my tribute. (Y/N) Archeron from district 12."
She felt his thumb rub over her knuckles as he talked, and she let go of his hand to touch the fence, getting closer to the two children, "Hi there." She greeted with a warm look, "What's your name?"
"My name is Francis." The little boy introduced himself wearing a black suit, pulling the little girl closer to his side who smiled shyly, "This is my sister, Venus. She's only four."
(Y/N) returned the look placing her hands on her knees for a second, and tilted her head sweetly, "Personally, I think four is a very smart age to be." She praised, making the little girl beam up at her.
"Where did you find that bird from?" Venus asked curiously, the microphone coming down near her mouth so she could be heard better.
The older girl chuckled fondly thinking about her friend back in district 12, missing the bird dearly, "He found me." She tells the little girl, flashing her teeth in a wide grin, "He was wounded and I nursed him back to health. And I think he loves my music, which is why he sticks around."
Venus giggled happily looking at the girls beautifully done braid laying over her shoulder, "Can I touch your hair?" She questioned cutely, gaining a soft laugh from (Y/N) nodding her head.
"Of course you may." She leant forward to let Venus's fingers gently graze along her long braid, feeling the small flowers intertwine in the hair, and the many plates inside the hair tie.
Once the little girl had finished touching her hair that many people seemed to love, her (E/C) eyes shift to the interviewer beside the children, "Oh, hello. Who might you be?"
He frowned not expecting that, leaning up from his bent position stumbling words out, "You don't know who I am?" Someone laughed behind, making him scold them, "Don't laugh. Not everyone has televisions out in the districts." He turned back around to the girl smiling charmingly, "I'm Lucretius Lucky Flickerman. But more enticingly, who are you? (Y/N) from district 12?"
She smiled a bit wonky leaning forward to make sure she reached the microphone, "Well, I'm not actually from 12. I never really had a place, up until the covey found me. And now, we're like a family." She began to tell him kindly, "We're musicians, and we travel from place to place, as the fancy takes us. At least we used to, before the peacekeeper rounded us up."
As she engaged in conversation, she was unaware of how Cassian was watching her closely. His attention was wholly captivated by her, his gaze softening as he watched her animated expressions and the rhythmic cadence of her word.
His blue, and more intense eyes trailed over her figure up and down, a small smirk gracing his lips standing beside her to the side, watching the tribute talk. His tribute. And his alone.
"But now you're district 12, with your sister right?" Flickerman asked, pointing the microphone to his mouth briefly to talk, before passing it back to in front of hers smiling.
She bowed her head bit, touching the rose behind her ear gently and chuckled softly, "If you say so." She mused, feeling Cassian's side grazing hers now.
"Your hair and dress are far from grey, and they seem to be a big hit with the children." He motioned using his hand to gesture to the said things.
She patted down her jumpsuit dress where the ruffles were, and looked back up at Flickerman grinning sweetly, "Oh, I'm sure they are." She answered chuckling, "The covey like's colour, and I happen to be one of them. But this dress was made by Lucy Gray, which was once her mothers so its extra special to me."
"And she's in district 12?"
"Well, only her bones darlin. Her pearly white bones." She replied causally, making him snort amused, "Do you know my mentor? Says his name is Cassian Snow." She wrapped her arm around Cass's forearm, pulling him into the spotlight, "Clearly me and my sister got the cake with the cream 'cause nobody else bothered to show up."
Cassian let himself be pulled along with her, his hand that wasn't behind his back touching her waist, and felt her side touch his, the side of her head resting on his shoulder for a few seconds.
Flickerman furrowed his eyebrows confused, glancing back at the camera and the person behind it, before back around to Cassian, "The game makers did tell you to jump in the cage with them?"
"They didn't tell me not to." Cassian began to talk into the microphone, nodding his head with a tight lip smile, "They just said that it was a mentors job to introduce our tribute to the citizens of Panem."
He looked over the small crowd of people, before back down softly at the girl clinging onto his arm, "And I thought, 'Well if (Y/N) is brave enough to be here, then why shouldn't I be too?'"
"For the record, I didn't have a choice either." She was quick to add, moving her head forward away from Cassian's shoulder, their hold one another coming to an end.
"For the record, I think you're about to be whisked away, young man." Flickerman fired back, spotting the incoming soldiers marching up behind the two in the cage.
Two peacekeepers approached Cassian, across the yard a few more were pulling away his twin brother from Lucy Gray, and now went to grab Cassian, who scowled but didn't fight against them.
However (Y/N) was quick to reach out taking ahold of his right wrist, "Wait-" She made him stop, his head turning around to face her to look down, while she stared back up at him pleadingly, "Get us some food, please. Doesn't matter if there's not enough for me, but please enough for my sister and Jessup."
He pursed his lips looking at her through his messy strains of hair over his forehead, only nodding softly before he was ripped away from her. She sighed heavily watching him disappear from view, and went over to where Lucy Gray was sitting on a rock with Jessup.
