CHAPTER ONE ✧・゚

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

THE DULL CLOWDS ROLLED OVER THE SKIES OF PANEM, mirroring the state that the districts were in, and was the complete opposite to how the Capitol currently was. While the poorer people suffered, the Capitol continued their rain of terror, and turned a blind eye to the obvious suffering.

Cassian Snow never took things for granted, being born in a rich family to come out as one of the poorer ones in the end, he learnt the hard way. Whenever he could, he would try to give back by cooking to his very few family members remining, especially his twin, his brother in blood, Coriolanus.

But, it was very hard to do so when they couldn't even eat sometimes on days, and would have to find scraps just to get through to the next morning when the sun shines.

Cass stood in front of the broken mirror inside his shared room with his brother, glancing over his reflection staring back at him with a frown. He pushed back his curly blonde locks off his forehead, watching as his bare chest slowly moves up and down to calm himself.

He cringes a bit spotting a bug crawling along the floor, making him step back away from the mirror, lucky he was wearing boots and pants, but no shirt yet. He was waiting for their cousin, Tigris to get back from fixing their shirts,  as today was the day of the Reaping ceremony.

"Cass!" He hears his brother calling from inside the kitchen, alerting the male who almost bumped into the metal cupboard behind him, "Tigris is back!"

Bright blue eyes widened hearing Coriolanus' words, quickly fixing himself up one more time to move through the doors of the bathroom, down the hallway as his footsteps echo around the house. The faint sound of voices also mixed into the sound, coming from inside the kitchen.

Tigris was straight away rushing towards the cook the house, a beaming smile across her face, "Cass, look!" She shows off the twins fathers dress shirts, them done up fancier to match the Capitol aesthetic, "I did it, and just in time!"

Cass gently reaches up to grasp the edges of the shirt she handed to him, heart squeezing a bit inside his chest, "Thank you, Tig." His normal deep voice was softer, sending the girl a warmer smile, "It's beautiful."

"Best cousin ever." Coriolanus pops up beside his brother wearing his shirt already, wrapping a playfully arm around Cassian's bare shoulder blade grinning at them both.

Cassian pushed his slightly younger brother back by the face scoffing, taking off the dress shirt from the coathanger, "Anyway, tell us everything." He asked of Tigris, placing the hanger onto the table beside them.

"Where did I start?" She gushed lifting her hands up to her cheeks, walking in line with them as Cass slips on the tight fitting white shirt, "I told Fabrice at work that she needed to bleach her white curtains, and I slipped the shirt in when I did it."

The Snow brothers shared a look behind her, Coriolanus helping his brother do up his top button of the shirt since Cass always seemed to mix them up, even if he was amazingly skilled with his fingers.

"The tesserane buttons, I made her." She continued on explaining going into the back of the kitchen, where the fridge and sink was placed.

"The bathroom product?" Cassian snorted amused following after his brother to go towards where she was, still trying to fit himself into the dress shirt, that definitely showed off his defined muscles, "Really?"

Tigris only giggled her answer turning back to the two for a second, and grabbed onto the fridges handle, "Oh, did you two find the potatoes?" She questioned opening the object to show how empty it was inside, "You should really eat something today."

Coriolanus shakes his head sharing another look with his slightly taller brother leaning on the doorway, "Save them for grandmam." He advised in an assured, "Besides, Cass will cook something later if needed."

Tigris furrowed her brows a bit unsure before using her hip to close the fridge door, walking past the brothers to each pat one of their cheeks fondly, "You boys look so handsome." She praises, voice raising to speak to their grandmother, "Grandmam, come see, Cassian and Coriolanus."

Cass stayed a bit behind his brother tucking the shirt inside of his pants, making sure there was no bits sticking up like a pigs tail, and grabbed the black coat that sat on his shoulders, only covering some of it.

"Future presidents of Padem." Tigris boosted in a funny voice helping Coryo with his coat, and it Cass frowning not liking the title she gave them, "We salute you."

His attention was brought back when his grandmother gently took his larger hand in hers, as she held out a red rose for him to take, "Just a moment." She fondly speaks slipping the flower into his shirts pocket.

"Wait, what about-" He went to protest quickly knowing it was difficult to grow, and get the seeds, lifting his other hand that had a ring on his second finger to touch her wrinkly, warm one.

She smiles softly patting his chest where she placed the rose, "Don't worry. I can grow some more." She reassured smoothing out his shirt a bit, and cupped the side of his face in a motherly way, "You're ready now."

He flashes a dimpled smile that he picked up from his mother, leaning into his grandmothers hold, before looking to his brother and Tigris, "Healthy grades. Never miss class." He started listing things the two always did, "Ten years. I'm sure even Dean Highbottom can't deny us this now."

"He doesn't hate either of you." Tigris tried to assure the stressed out brothers, helping the males button up their small back coat that stopped just before their chest.

"He hates everyone." Coriolanus mumbled with distaste, a frown over his forehead spotting a look to Cassian smelling his rose in his shirt, "He doesn't mind Cass since he has talent, but he despises me."

Cassian shot his head up causing his curls to fall over his blue eyes a bit, opening his mouth to protest hearing his brothers words, but was cut off by him, "What's the firs thing you spend the prize money on? A new dress?"

Tigris smiled a bit happily playing with her fingers, chuckling in agreement to Coryo's words, and he turned his head to their grandmother next.

"Chocolate?" He asked making her repeat the word longingly, and finally looked towards Cassian smiling, "And you, dear brother, an actual kitchen where you can cook all you like?"

Cassian couldn't hide his excitement very well, as his bright blue eyes said everything his brother needed to know. Coriolanus knew him like the back of his hand, it was both a good thing and also something that would come back to hit Cassian in the worst way possibly in the weeks to come.

"The sentence prize, Cass, Tigris." Coriolanus voices seriously adjusting his sleeve near his wrists, gaining head nods back in acknowledgement, "We'll be able to pay the rent. Snow lands on top."

CASSIAN NORMALLY ISN'T A NERVOUS PERSON WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS HE'S DONE BEFORE, but the walk towards the main building of the Capitol, where all the other mentors were, game makers, and just important people to do with the games, had the man's gut churning badly.

It really didn't help either when he had a lot of people from both genders fawn with him, and the way he acts so flirty and friendly with anyone he meets. It was both a blessing and curse, thanks to the Capitol for boosting about his skills.

The sun was up high in the sky now shining brightly down on everyone, which did make him feel a bit better knowing that it would melt away the snow scattered around the grounds, and structures laying inside the Capitol.

"Just breath, Cass." Coriolanus whispered to him over the loud noise of the crowd talking, as they entered the buildings labboy, his blue eyes glancing into his brothers matching ones, "They respect you a lot so use that to your advantage."

Cassian shot his brother an incredulously look brushing over his ring on his finger, something he does out of anxiety, "You're not helping, Coryo." He grumbled stepping down the stairs with him, and they walk into the forming crowd, praying to not get stopped.

"Is that the Snow twins?" A familiar female voice called out from behind them, causing Cass to tense up with a grimace expression over his face, earning himself a discreet elbow to his side from his brother.

In sync like they practised as always the males turn around to greet who it was, seeing their old classmate Clemensia standing there. Cassian acts like he normally does by gently grabbing her hand, to leave a friendly kiss on her knuckles, that has the girl's cheeks becoming a bit red.

"Clemmie." Coriolanus greets with a small smirk across his mouth, his hand coming to grab onto his brothers forearm to pull him back up from being ran into by the others around them.

She slyly smirks back coming up to slip in between them, lopping her arms with the twins ones as they continued to walk again. She frowns feeling how wet their shirts were a bit, "Are you sweating?" She asked the males surprised.

"It's reaping day." Cassian's answer is short, and tight facing forward, today being one of his least favorite events knowing what was going to happen, and lied through his perfect teeth,  "We gave the driver the morning off."

Clemensia groaned rolling her eyes, "Oh, that Ingrid. She'll be begging to show for you two around today." She complains tugging on Cass's arm, who faked a smile down to her, "Just don't forgot I was your class partner while you are gloating over the grand prize."

The brothers share a look over her head warily, and Coriolanus makes a displeased noise, "Prize? Please, we just want to serve Panem." He tells her, gaining a suspicious hum back.

Cassian gets a bit more nervous when they walk into the even more crowed place, where the event would be held, and focused on his twins voice instead of the ones around him. He hated having to be apart of the games, but he'd follow his brother anywhere, into death if may be. They had the same blood after all.

"Good luck." Clemensia breaks away from them once they arrived in the center of the hall, giving the brothers both a playful wink that had Cass sighing annoyed, "Not that you two will need it."

When she finally left them alone to go talk to some other people, Cassian tugged on Coriolanus's sleeve to gain his attention, "Don't brag about out fake life so much." He warns in a scolding way, "Otherwise you'll say something that won't be believable."

Coriolanus rolled his eyes understanding what he meant, and pulled back his arm from Cassian, "Whatever you say, Winter." He mocked his nickname from their childhood, causing the other male's eye to twitch, "You better not go far off either. The ceremony will start soon, and I need you here with me."

"Yeah, I know that." Cassian's somewhat of a accent dropped into a whispering one, blue eyes flickering over to the familiar figure of Sejanus talking with his family, "I'll be here, no worries. It's not like I have a choice anyways."

The last part was more to himself in a grumble, spinning around in his spot to turn away from Coryo, and walked over to where Sejanus was meeting him in the middle, a bright smile on him seeing his brother figure.

"There he is!" Sejanus calls happily wrapping an arm the best he could around Cassian's tall figure, "My favorite Snow brother." He adds playfully jabbing his fingers into the blonde sides, "I'm surprised you aren't eating any of the food yet."

Cassian bashfully shrugs the males arm off to wrap a loose one around his forearm, "Yeah, no. I'm not really in the mood to be eating right now." He points out sparing a glance at the food behind them, "Y'know, especially with what today is."

"I can agree with you there." Sejanus mumbles with a sigh through his nose, leading them towards where Coryo was talking with a group of mentors, "I also need to tell you something, Cass. And I don't think you'll like it."

The said male felt his worry spike up at how serious his friends tone was now, peeking down at him with his blue eyes, "What's wrong?" He asked concerned, glancing up to stare at Coriolanus's back in front of them, "You can tell me anything, you know that right?"

And Sejanus knew that was true. He told Cassian everything, and always has, he just didn't know if this specific information he had was the best for the Cass to hear.

But as Sejanus goes to open his mouth to talk, arm slipping away from Cassian's, the sound of the familiar tune playing over the speakers caused him to stop. It was the signal that the Reaping was about to start.

"C'mon. May as well tell your twin also." He sighed heavily over the blaring sound, leading the confused Cassian over to where Coriolanus was seated and waiting for them in their selected spots.

Cass sat in between the two on the blue chairs, placing his bag he had around his shoulders onto his lap, and turned to face Sejanus hearing his low voice talking again.

"Hey, listen." He started off in a nervous tone, glancing between the snow twins beside him, "I know you have high hopes for this," He paused for a second, and then continued, "but there's no prize today. Not anymore. I'm so sorry."

Coriolanus' face said it all from how it dropped into a frowning one, while Cass only tight lipped smile, not knowing how to feel about it. Yes, he was upset that there was no money to provide for his family, but also glad since getting prizes for something so horrible didn't sit well with him either.

A eerier chuckle echos through the room that came from a microphone, standing on the podium in front of everyone was Volumnia Gaul, known as Dr. Gaul. She is a stooped, old woman with frizzy gray hair.

"How tantalizing to see al your shinning young faces on this auspicious day." She talks into the microphone in greeting, "I am Dr. Volumnia Gaul, your humble head game maker in charge of the wat department and all its affiliated concerns."

Cassian shuffled in his spot already knowing who this woman was, as she was other person who had high hopes for him and always talked so proudly about him. His blue eyes glanced to Sejanus beside him, seeing how he was frowning.

The crowd all turns back looking a familiar male, Casca Highbottom, who had his back turned, "Oh." He gulps down the last of his drink now feeling their eyes on him, "Select students, faculty, and of course Dr. Gal, I have-"

He spins around to actually face them, hands in his pockets walking along the pathway in between the crowd, "-summoned you all here today for the 10th annual reaping ceremony. In which we choose either two siblings and a child, or two children from each district to throw into the Capitol Arena to fight to the death in the Hunger Games."

He eventually came up to the front now in front of everyone in the room, "Our own 24 top prospects, all waiting to hear the results of hard stuck in this prestigious institution, eager to learn who's won that Plinth Prize, no doubt. In a gold future, however, I am here to tell you that there has been a change this year."

Cassian shares a look with Coriolanus, both having a feeling their friend wasn't lying about what he told them, and looked back to the creator, stomachs churning waiting to hear the confirmation.

"One final assignment to prove you are worth because the esteemed citizens of the Capitol," He gestured to the group inside the building, shrugging his shoulders, "have grown bore of the games and simply aren't watching anymore. And if the games are to continue at all, there must be an audience. So head game maker Dr. Gaul has stepped in to incentivize patriotic values wit her own unique flare, staring with you."

Highbottom crossed his arms behind his back, stopping in the middle of the room on the carpet, "The Plinth Prize will no longer be determined by who has the best grades, but by who is the best mentor in the Hunger Games."

Everyone broke out into shocked protest hearing this, while the Snow brothers tried to hide their emotions realising there would be no prize money in the end. Their plan was going downhill, they could see that now.

"This is a brand new role." Highbottom came over to where the brothers were sat with their friends, giving them a look before pointing at the screens in front on the walls, "As the reaping progresses live, I will allocate each district tribute a Capitol mentor behind the scenes, one who must persuade them to perform for the camera."

The mentors held in their comments of dislike about the idea, allowing him to continue on talking about what will happen, "Your role is to turn these children into spectacles. Not survivors. Victory in the games is only one of our considerations. Your entire future rests on this last project."

Cassian bit his tongue to also keep his words to himself, crossing his arms over his muscular chest not liking what was being said. He hated this, and didn't want a part of this, but something in the back of his mind was telling him to stay, and wait.

"Oh, and I must tell you that anyone caught cheating to give their tributes an unfair advantage..." Highbottom trails off with a snorting chuckle, a coldness to his stone that the mentors knew he wasn't joking, "Will just have no future at all."

Another tune started playing behind him signaling the start of the reaping ceremony, "Oh, here we go." He sits down in front of Sejanus and the other girl mentor on the steps, "Let the reaping ceremony begin."

He began to list each district that popped up onto the screen, assigning them to the selected mentors as he read of the paper in his hands, using his one eyeglass to help him do so, people cheering each time he said a tribute.

Cassian's leg wouldn't stop bouncing out of nervousness watching the screen closely, waiting to see who he would be mentoring with his brother in this sick game. He was hoping it someone whom would make their chances of wining go up, but either way, he wouldn't complain nor wish them to be apart of the games.

"District 12, surprisingly we have two siblings and a male this time." Highbotton informed everyone squinting his eyes to read the names off the paper, and chuckled to himself once he did.

He stood up from his spot to trail off away back near the front, and turned briefly to look at the Snow brothers, "The fireheart, and the rock girl. Sisters. District 12." He reads off, "They belong to Cassian and Coriolanus Snow."

Cassians' heart dropped to his stomach glancing up at the screen, hoping to find whom this title belonged to and whom he would be trying to make win the games. His leg bouncing just got worse, making Coriolanus gently nudge his side to calm him.

"(Y/N) Archeron, and Lucy Gray Baird." The mayor of that district said into the mic, the voice echoing around the area as the crowd began to murmurer, camera zooming in on the two girls.

A few of the people around them drew back to reveal the unlucky two, showing off what they looked like. One of them had long hair flowing down her back, while the other had (H/C) hair tied into side swept french braid, a messy fringe cover her forehead.

She stood upright in a jumpsuit dress made of  dull blue and red ruffles, now raggedy but once was fancy. The print on her the top that was a long sleeve, was a rose and a familiar bird morphed in between the other patters on it. Lucy Gray had a similair outfit on to her adopted sister, but instead it was a full dress and rainbow.

However, what really had the crowd gaping in surprise was the very noticeable small mocking jay that was perched on (Y/N)'s shoulder, almost seemingly like it was her pet in some way, by how it was nestled up into her hair a bit.

Together hand in hand, they make their way down the path where the peacekeepers were keeping everyone back behind them, walking with a stride, even as their faces wavered.

They passed Lucy Gray's ex-boyfriend, Billy Taupe, who for some reason was trying to get (Y/N)'s attention on him from the side line, rapidly saying sorry's, but they just ignored him, keeping their heads faced forward.

The girls did not make straight for the stage, but began to weave through the girls off to their right, heading for a specific someone who was smirking over them getting picked for the games.

Over the screen that was showing the entire thing, Cassian's eyes hadn't left it even for a second, not even to glance at his worrying brother beside him. For the first time in a long time, Cassian Snow was mesmerised by a girl, and not just putting on show to make people like the Snow family.

(Y/N) dipped her head a bit to whisper something to the bird perched on her shoulder, before feeling Lucy Gray's hand pass over the green garden snake into her palm, hearing its low hissing as it squeezed her thumb.

It happened quickly. She parted from Lucy Gray for a second to pull back Mayfair Lipp's dress collar, slipping the garden snake inside, while the mocking jay chirped loudly flying up to swoop down to attack the now screaming girls hair and face.

Focus stayed on the victim, her once smirk changing to an expression of horror, and shrieks as she fell to the ground, pawing at her clothes, while trying to stop the bird from clawing her eyes out from above.

Cassian stood up quickly out of his chair seeing that happening, causing his brother and few friends around to stare at him, as his widened eyes stare at (Y/N)'s figure on the screen. She seemed like an angel, but he knew that was the opposite now.

He wouldn't lie, but he found himself oddly attracted to what she just did.

The mayor yelled for the peacekeepers to help his struggling daughter, who ended up getting rid of what was inside her dress, that landed on the ground. It was a snake, one that was hissing angrily. At the same time, the mocking jay flew away also after hearing the sharp whistle from (Y/N).

Lucy Gray smirked amused to the girl once she fell back in step with her, their hands finding each others again getting strength one other, and made their way to the stage again. However when they did, (Y/N) was met with a harsh slap to the face by Mayor Lipp, knocking her to the stage ground.

Gasps filled the air on behalf of their drum skilled, bird tamer, bow master girl, as Mayor Lipp tries to grab the girl but Lucy Gray exclaimed protest, shoving him back away from (Y/N), and dropped down beside her, making sure she was alright.

A peacekeeper grabbed his arms, dragging him away from the stage and spotlight of the cameras. (Y/N) remained where she was feeling Lucy Gray's hands on her side, and held up her hand when Jessup stepped forward to help them.

"You can't take my past
You can't take my history."

The familiar voices of the covey started to sing on the sisters behalf from their spots at the back, causing the two on stage to perk up a bit.

"You can take my voice
You can take my pa,
But his name's a mystery."

Lucy Gray moved her hands to grip (Y/N)'s forearms in hers, getting ready to lift the girl up from the stage, both of them knowing that tune very well, as they soon joined in on the singing quietly.

"Nothing you can take from me was ever
worth keeping. Nothing you can take.
Was ever worth keeping."

Cassian's stomach flipped a bit with a new feeling when her (E/C) eyes made eye contact with his blue ones across the screen, the only sound he was hearing behind her singing voice mixed in with the others, and ignored the commotion from behind him.

She slowly looked up once more with her braid falling behind her now, messy hair framing her face staring directly at the camera, hoping to portray how pissed off she was. With Lucy Gray's help, she stood back up to move behind the microphone, holding onto her adopted sisters hand.

"You can't take my charm
You can't take my humor
You can't take my wealth
'Cause it's just a rumor
Nothing you can take was ever worth keeping
You can't take my sass
You cant take my talking."

When Lucy Gray had finished singing into the microphone, (Y/N) swiped it next to hold it up to her mouth, the anger in her rising up as she seethed looking t the camera, tears in her eyes yelling, "You can kiss my ass! You and your stupid games!"

Laughs erupted around Cassian inside the room hearing what the girl just shouted, his own lips perking up into an amused smile followed by a shocked airy chuckle, eyes finding his brothers who smirked shaking his head.

Gasp filled the air of district 12 surprised at how the normal sweet girl to everyone was now showing her not so nice side, but who could blame her though? If it was them up there, they would be the same way also.

She stepped back in line with a grinning Lucy Gray away from the camera, a smirk across (Y/N)'s face as she bowed with her arms out holding onto Lucy Gray's hand, who followed her movement.

"Thank you, for your consideration and time." She fake a muse, her southern accent coming out thicker as she bowed lower for dramatic effect, braid falling back over her shoulder before she stood back up with Lucy Gray to be dragged away by the peacekeepers.

In the room watching this all, it was filled of voices talking about what just happened, loud and excited. "Oh, she's mentally ill." One of the mentors commented behind Cassian, still staring at the screen.

"No." He mumbles shaking his head, a fond smile playing at his lips touching the rose in his shirts pocket, watching (Y/N)'s figure on the Tv disappear, "She's amazing."
