"LET THE 75TH HUNGER GAMES BEGIN," A VOICE ANNOUNCED. Leia was escorted back to her room, but she watched intently as they passed screen after screen, keeping an eye on everything that was happening. Every television in the country was playing it, so she didn't have a problem finding one. "May the odds be ever in your favor."
The layout of the arena seemed to be a beach surrounded by a jungle. In front of each Tribute was a triangle of water leading to the Cornucopia with a strip of land on either side. The voice began counting down while everyone looked around frantically, trying to find their District Partners and allies. Leia's eyes lingered on Finnick, and as soon as the gunshot rang throughout the arena, he was in the water.
Katniss was first to reach the Cornucopia with Finnick right behind her. He immediately reached for the spear, but she whipped around, pointing her bow and arrow directly at his neck. The Calore woman's breath hitched in her throat, stopping in the hallway to watch. The Odair man just lifted up his wrist, showing her a golden bangle that hung on it right next to the bracelet Leia made him all those years ago. "Good thing we're allies, right?"
"Where did you get that?" the Everdeen girl questioned suspiciously. Haymitch.
"Where do you think? Duck," he ordered, and she complied, hitting the ground as he threw his trident, plunging it into the heart of a Tribute creeping up behind her. A cannon sounded, and Leia was biting the inside of her cheek. "Don't trust 1 and 2. I'll take this side you hold them off. I'll go find Peeta," he told her, and a moment later, he returned. "Katniss! Mags found him. He's over here."
The two ran down one of the strips of land to see Peeta and another Tribute fighting in the water. Finnick wasted no time in diving in, but the two went underwater before he could reach them. There was a cannon, and a body floated to the surface. Leia's hands were on her mouth, praying that it wasn't Peeta. She didn't know the boy very well, but he seemed really sweet. And if he died, the whole plan kind of fell apart.
Suddenly, Peeta resurfaced, earning a sigh of relief from Katniss, Mags, Finnick, Leia, and half the country. Finnick quickly helped him out of the water, and the three of them sprinted into the forest, Mags on Finnick's shoulders. They had to have run at least a quarter of a mile before they stopped.
"We gotta find fresh water," Peeta pointed out.
Finnick placed Mags on the ground, and they all crouched, hiding and taking a break. They were all sweating like crazy, although that might just be from the water. The jungle was definitely humid, and they were going to need some source of water. Three canons went off, and Finnick chuckled. "I guess we're not all holding hands anymore."
"You think that's funny?" Katniss scoffed, and she looked offended at his words.
"Every time that cannon goes off it's music to my ears. I don't care about any of them," the Odair man responded, nodding to the rest of the arena. However, Katniss simply pulled a machete from her back and held it out threateningly. Leia furrowed her eyebrows, but Finnick didn't seem worried. "Wanna face the Career pack alone? What would Haymitch say?"
"Haymitch isn't here," she told him, but the blonde girl standing in the hallway of the Tribute building knew that she wouldn't kill him. Katniss was smart. She knew that having Finnick would be helpful, even if she did not trust him.
Peeta glanced between the two, clearly not too pleased with the argument happening in front of him. "Let's keep moving."
So, they kept walking. In the meantime, Leia made her way back to her room to watch. Peeta led, and Finnick helped Mags along, carrying her most of the way. Katniss trailed behind them, keeping watch and looking very suspicious of everything happening around them. All of a sudden, she looked up, her eyes trained on something in front of Peeta.
"Peeta, no!" she screamed, but it was too late. He had swung at a branch and hit some sort of invisible barrier that caused a spew of sparks and sent him flying backward. The others were knocked to the ground as well, but it took them seconds to stand up when they saw the unconscious boy on the ground. Katniss kneeled over him, grabbing his face. "Peeta? He's not breathing. He's not breathing. Peeta! Peeta."
Finnick ran, shoving her off of the boy and beginning CPR on the Mellark. Katniss whipped out her bow, ready to attack until she realized that the Odair man was trying to help him. She then just sobbed and begged for him to wake up as Finnick continued. "Come on. Come on!"
"Oh, my God," Katniss sobbed out as his eyes finally snapped open. Finnick breathed out a sigh of relief, tumbling to the ground and panting. As he caught his breath, he brought his fingers up to touch his lips, and Leia's worried expression was replaced with a grin at the signal.
Peeta breathed out, "Be careful there's a force field up there."
After they had their reunion, Katniss decided to climb up a tree to scope out the rest of the arena. Once she climbed back down, she informed them, "The force field, it's a dome. We're at the edge of the arena. I couldn't find any signs of freshwater."
"It's gonna get dark soon. We'll be safe with our backs protected," Finnick pointed out. It was important that they sleep and have the most energy they possibly could for the days to come. "We should set up camp, take turns sleeping. I can take first watch."
"Not a chance," Katniss scoffed, and Leia honestly admired how careful she was. Even after the Odair man saved Peeta's life, she still didn't trust him.
Finnick rolled his eyes, finally having enough. He had done plenty for that girl that he didn't even know, and she had done nothing in return. "Honey, that thing I did back there for Peeta, that's called 'saving his life.' If I wanna kill either of you, I would've done it by now."
That night, the Panem anthem played as the dead Tributes were displayed on the night sky. Leia didn't see anyone that knew, which was good, but she knew who had died already. Johanna was with Wiress, Beetee, and Blight, and Seeder and Chaff were together. All of a sudden, there was a clinking, and a metal container floated down to the group. Leia furrowed her eyebrows because it wasn't something that she had helped send.
Katniss caught it, reading the note first. "Drink up."
"What is it?" Finnick questioned as the opened the container to reveal some metal instrument that Leia had never seen before.
"It's from Haymitch," the Everdeen girl answered, examining if a bit further. All of a sudden, a lightbulb seemed to go off in her head. "I think it's a spile."
She brought it over to a tree a couple of yards away, hammering it into the trunk with the back of her machete. She waited for a moment, and all of a sudden, water began pouring out of it. Finnick laughed in disbelief, quickly rushing to get some water. Leia laughed as well, clapping her hands together excitedly.
Suddenly, there was a loud clanging, and it sounded like some sort of drum. It wasn't a cannon, but it echoed a number of time before stopping. Katniss furrowed her eyebrows. "I counted twelve."
"Midnight?" Finnick guessed, and they looked up when a giant tree was struck by lightning.
Katniss suggested. "Or the number of districts." That sat there for a moment before Finnick finally sighed. He wasn't showing it, but Leia knew that he was exhausted.
"Well, if you wont go to sleep, I will," he told the Everdeen woman before heading off to lay down next to Mags. Before he drifted off, he touched his lips again, just to let Leia know that he was thinking about her.Β
