              ALTHEA SPARKS was told from a very young age that she had a good chance at survival. Best in training, good people skills, and a valuable skill set many tributes lacked.

She used to yearn for it. The approval from her family, her name up on that big screen. Everyone knowing that you survived. This was what she was made for.

Being a Victor—meaning you managed to not only beat your peers, but you also survived the forces of nature—came with a price to pay. Everywhere you looked, there was a camera in your face. And more importantly? There was a whole presidency on your case.

In the games it might've been fatal to make a mistake as harmless as lighting a fire. But once you managed to fight your way through that arena, then the game really began.

It was some unspoken secret amongst the remaining Victors. Nobody really knew what happened behind the scenes. All they knew was how the Capitol's actions affected you. And that they only knew to some extent.

And it took Althea Sparks a while to realize she was nothing but a pawn with a pretty face in the Capitol's horrible chess game.

There was a price to pay when being crowned the best. And Althea Sparks will witness the effects a moment too late.
