[ LUCY'S POV ]
ย ย ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐, and for those thirteen years, I've never met anyone like her. I've never considered befriending another because she is quite literally the perfect best friend a girl could ask for.
For thirteen years, it's always just been the two of us. Sure, Nathan joined our duo before he and Addy broke up, and now he spends most of his time with his hockey buddies. We've never had another girl in our duo, but today our duo has become a trio.
ย ย Today was the last day of school before the Christmas break, and we did our PPโโ poetry projectโโ presentations. Me and Dean aced it, not that I'm bragging, but we did get a round of applause and the teacher gave us a metaphorical gold star. We don't find out our grades until after the holidays, but I'm confident that we did well.
ย ย Addy and Lindsay also did extraordinary, and that brings me to right now.
ย ย After school, Addy and Lindsay were talking, and I was invited to Lindsay's house for a little girl's nightโโ something I've only ever done with Addyโโ and I agreed.
ย ย Now we're sat in Lindsay's bedroom, sharing two pizzas, wearing face masks in our pjs while Notting Hill plays on the TV.
ย ย "Hugh Grant is so dreamy," Addy says, mouthful of pizza, and Lindsay and I hum in agreement. "Elizabeth Hurley is a lucky woman."
ย ย "Was a lucky woman, Ad."
ย ย She shoots upwards, shock plastered on her face. "What?"
ย ย "They broke up," Lindsay confirms.
ย ย Addy flops back down, her head hitting the beanbag she's laying onโโ that she stole from me when I was in the bathroom. "I can't believe I didn't know that."
ย ย "It was truly heartbreaking news," I say, picking up another slice of pepperoni pizza.
ย ย It's strange how natural this all feels. Until today, Lindsay and I haven't exchanged many words. Sure, growing up, we knew of one another and we were kind to each other, but we've never done this. She's been spending a lot of time with Addy due to the project, and when they invited me, I nearly declined because I assumed they invited me out of pity but I also really didn't want to say no.
ย ย I'd never admit this out loud but I've always wanted a girl groupโโ an iconic trio, you know?
ย ย Addy, Lucy and Lindsayโโ iconic, right?
ย ย I like Lindsay a lot. She's a lovely girl. A little quiet, but I think spending time with Addy for the past month has cracked her out of her shell. Seriously, spend one minute with Addy and you'll be a whole new person. I think Addy brought me out of my bubble a little bit more over the years, and that's one of the main reasons I value her so much as a friend.
ย ย "Do you think I should dye my hair?" Addy asks, now staring in Lindsay's mirror.
ย ย Lindsay snorts out a laugh, and we both say, "No."
ย ย "Why?" She turns to us, visibly offended.
ย ย "You want to be ginger like Julia Roberts," I say, and Addy nods, still giving me that, so what look. "If you dye your hair, you won't look like Julia Roberts, Addy."
ย ย She pouts, turning back to the mirror and smiling widely. "Addy, you're beautiful just the way you are," Lindsay compliments.
ย ย "Damn straight." I lean forward to clap my hand against Lindsay's. "Dare I say you look prettier than Julia Roberts."
ย ย Addy pins me with stern eyes. "Yeah, right."
ย ย "You're like a Reese Witherspoon kind of pretty," Lindsay says, and I nod in agreement.
ย ย Addy claps her hands together. "Oh! Linds, have you seen Legally Blonde?"
ย ย She shakes her head. "No."
ย ย Addy gasps, moving forward towards the TV. "We need to watch it." She pauses the film, and she moves back to the mirror. "Elle Woods is who our girl, Lucy, is aspiring to be." I roll my eyes, watching as Addy peels off her face mask. "Now, I'm going to go to the video store to see if they have it. If they don't, I'm grabbing Cruel Intentions."
ย ย Lindsay clicks her fingers. "That's the one with Sarah Michelle Gellar, right?"
ย ย "Yup." Addy nods, moving to pick up her bag. "Now, behave. I'll be back in a jiffy."
ย ย The second Addy leaves, I find myself laughing because I don't know how Addy and I ever worked out as friends but I'm damn happy we did. In more ways than one, we're completely different, but we're also very similar.
Lindsay moves towards the mirror, pulling off her own face mask before she dumps it in the trash. "How long have you and Addy been friends?" she asks, moving towards me and placing a glass of coke in my hand.
I thank her, taking a quick sip before I answer, "Oh, thirteen years. We met just before I turned five."
"Wow," Lindsay chuckles. "She talks about you a lot."
"Yeah, well, I'm a great topic."
I move to take my face mask off, and my face immediately feels more refreshed than it did before. God, I need to do face masks more often if they make your face feel this freaking good.
I sit back down on the bed, my legs crossed. "What about you? I've seen you with a few friends over the years, but I don't see you much at lunch."
Lindsay shrugs. "I don't really have..." She sighs, looking away from me. "I don't really have close friends, just acquaintances, I guess."
I frown. "I'm sorry."
She shakes her head. "No, i-it's fine. I'm justโโ This is going to sound stupid, but I've always wanted, like, a group, you know?"
"I know what you mean," I reply. "It's always just been me and Addy, so it's nice to introduce another." She looks over at me, a soft smile on her face, and I smile back. "I mean, I'd definitely like to hang out with you more, if you're okay with that?"
She nods. "Really?"
"Hell yes. I need somebody else to listen to Addy's daily rants while I take a breather," I laugh. "I love her, but I've always wondered what it would be like to have somebody elseโโ another friend that I can bond with, I guess."
"Yeah, I get that."
"I don't know how you haven't got a whole group of friends," I say, and Lindsay looks surprised by my words. "I mean, I know we haven't spoken much, but from the two interactions we've had, you're, like, the nicest person I've ever met."
Lindsay looks away, obviously embarrassed and I apologise quietly. "I've just not met many people who want to be friends with me, I guess. Sure, people have been nice to me, but nobody has ever taken much interest in me until, well, Addy."
"Addy hasn't shut up about you," I tell her, and Lindsay laughs, her smile never faltering. "Seriously, I thought she was going to replace me."
"No, she'd never do that."
"No, but she definitely has room for another bestie." I shrug, taking another sip of my drink. "Thanks for inviting me tonight, it means a lot."
"Yeah, of course. You're important to Addy, and she's been a great friend to me recently, so..." Lindsay looks at me for a long moment before speaking again. "I want us to be friends too."
"Oh, don't worry, we are."
"Really?" She sounds so unsure, so doubtful, and I hate whoever made her feel like she couldn't trust the words coming out my mouth.
I lean forward, clinking my glass with hers. "Yes, you're officially part of our very small, very lovable group."
Before either of us can say another word, Addy bursts through the door with two giant bags. We stare at her, eyes wide and mouths gaped. "Okay, I've rented Legally Blonde and the first season of Buffy because I really wanted to watch it."
"What's with the other DVDs?" I ask, pointing to the extra bag.
"Oh, just some favourites." She begins to pull out several DVDs from the bag. "Ten Things I Hate About You."
"Love," I say, rushing forward to snatch the DVD from her. "What else?"
"Romeo and Juliet for..." She throws the DVD to Lindsay. "...Linds."
I peer over at her, grinning. "You have a crush on Leo, don't you?"
She nods. "Just a small one."
Addy pulls out one final DVD from the bag, and I scoff, shaking my head in protest. "My Girl? Do you want us to cry?"
"Yes." She places the DVD back in the bag. "It's a great bonding experience." She flops down onto the beanbag again, grabbing Legally Blonde. "What did I miss?"
I look over at Lindsay who smiles back at me. "Just letting Lindsay know that she's stuck with us until, well, forever."
"Oh, yeah." Addy slots the DVD in. "You lucky, lucky girl."
Lindsay reaches over, picking up the DVD for season one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "Why'd you get this?"
"Because David Boreanaz is hot," she replies.
I clap my hand against hers. "Agreed."

I explained to Lindsay that I plan on becoming a lawyer after I graduate from Yale hopefully, and to say that she barely knows me, she looked proud. She enjoyed the film, and now we're watching a film for herโโ Romeo and Juliet for Leonardo Dicaprio.
We agreed to watching My Girl, but I'm hoping Addy falls asleep before we have to put that heartbreaking film on.
"You know, Tristan looks a lot like Leo."
I roll my eyes, but I don't disagree. "Well, he was Romeo in the play."
"I know, but he really is just as dreamy as Leo."
I smack my hand against the back of Addy's neck. "He's taken, babe."
She looks over her shoulder at me. "I can appreciate a beautiful guy, Luce." She looks over at Lindsay. "You've seen Tristan, right?"
"Blue eyes, blonde, can't stop looking at you?" Lindsay replies, her eyes on me, and I chuckle, my face heating up. "Yes, we've all seen him around town. He's pretty."
ย ย I blush. "Yeah, he is."
ย ย "Where is he?" Addy asks, snatching a few M&Ms from my packet, but I've gotten used to her stealing my food so I don't say a damn thing.
ย ย "Uh..." I pause, chewing down on my bottom lip. "He's in, uh, Oxford with Logan."
ย ย "Logan?" Lindsay questions.
ย ย "His dick of a cousin," Addy replies, and I smack my hand against the back of her head gently. "What? I'm just speaking the truth."
ย ย "Why is he in Oxford?" Lindsay asks.
ย ย That was a good question, and one that I've not wanted to answer.
ย ย I saw Tristan on my eighteenth birthday, and he told me that he and Logan were going to Oxford over Christmas. They'd spend an entire month in England, doing whatever it is that American boys do, and then Tristan would get to check out Oxford University before returning to Connecticut when school starts back up.
ย ย I had been supportive because I am happy for him. If he loves it and he gets in, he'll go, and like he said, we'll figure it out. Right?
ย ย Do I have some fears and insecurities? Yes, but we agreed we wouldn't discuss anything until we receives our acceptances or rejections. However, a large part of me really thinks we should talk about the possibility of him leaving for another country that's, well, over three-thousand miles away.
ย ย "He applied for Oxford University," I explain, and Lindsay's eyes widen. "He wants to study English, and Oxford is one of the best schools in the world for it, so..." I shrug. "...he's there with his cousin, checking out the area and stuff."
ย ย "Wow, Oxford, that'sโโ"
ย ย "Far?" Addy fills in, her voice laced in frustration, and I crack a smile.
ย ย When Addy and I discussed Tristan leaving a few weeks ago, she was... not happy. She thinks we should talk about it more, but I don't want to push him. I want him to go wherever he wants, and if that's in England, that's fine too. We shouldn't discuss it until later because right now, none of us know where we're going to end up.
ย ย "I'm guessing you're not happy about it."
ย ย I look over at Lindsay. "I'm just..." I groan, letting my head hit the wall. "I don't know how I feel about it."
ย ย "How long have you two been together?"
ย ย "Two years," I reply.
ย ย "Wow, and you're eighteen? That'sโโ"
ย ย "That's crazy?" Addy answers, laughing. "I'm telling you, they're going to get married. Lucy and Tristan are for life if he doesn't screw it up and move to Oxford."
ย ย "Addyโโ"
ย ย "Look, I love you, and I respect Tristan, but he can go to a great school hereโโ in America. Hell, he could go to Yale with you. Why does he need to go all the way to Oxford to become a writer?" I open my mouth to respond, but she talks again, "He doesn't, that's what."
ย ย "He just wants to get away."
ย ย "From the one good thing he's got?" I fall silent, and Addy peers over at me, guilt on her face. "Luce, I'mโโ"
ย ย I shake my head. "Can we just talk about something else?"
ย ย Lindsay smiles, nodding her head. "I don't think I'm going to go to college," she says, and we turn our heads towards her. "Don't get me wrong, I think it's great if you two want to go, but I don't really know what I want yet, so..."
ย ย "Good for you, Lindsay," I say, offering her my best smile. "College isn't for everybody, and if you do figure out what you want, you can always go later on in life."
ย ย "Yeah. Some part of me just wants to ditch college, move to New York and open my own dance studio." Just like Miss. Patty, Addy would be an excellent teacher, I just know it. "But I also want to be Sara in Save the Last Dance."
ย ย "Oh, I love that movie," Lindsay gushes.
ย ย I hold up one of my favourite movies of all time. "Julia Stiles is a legend." Ten Things I Hate About You is in my top five favourite movies of all time, and I think it always will be.
ย ย "That she is." Addy smacks her hand against mine, and I laugh, forgetting all about the previous topic.
ย ย We fall silent after that, choosing to carry on with the film. It isn't until the movie is coming to an end when Addy turns to Lindsay and finally asks, "Linds, can I please set you up with Dean?"
ย ย Lindsay scoffs, looking to me for help, but I shrug apologetically. "H-He's still getting over Rory, isn't he?"
ย ย "It's been a month since they broke up."
ย ย "Yeah, but he's still... salty," I tell them. "It probably wouldn't be smart to date him just yet." I look over at Addy. "Give Dean some more time."
ย ย "Why is he still salty?"
ย ย "There's the whole Jess stole Rory issue," I explain, tilting my head. "You know?"
ย ย Addy waves her hand, shrugging. "Whatever."
ย ย "You know, it takes longer than a month for somebody to get over someone," Lindsay says, and I peer over at her, questioning the tone she used towards Addy.
ย ย "What?"
ย ย "Well, I don't think a certain someone is over you, Adelaide," she replies, taking a sip of her drink, and I grin.
ย ย "What the heck are you talking about?"
ย ย "Nathan, you fool," I respond, rolling my eyes. Addy scoffs, shaking her head, but I catch the blush on her face.
ย ย "He's always watching you, Ad."
ย ย "No, he is not."
ย ย "Yes, he is."
ย ย "I treated him horribly," Addy replies, looking away from us. "The last thing he wants is to get back together with me."
ย ย "But do you want that?" I ask.
ย ย She hasn't spoken about it, but I never did ask if she was interested in dating Nathan again. I know she loved him, and even know she had a silly, pathetic crush on my cousin, I know she still holds feelings towards Nathan. Those feelings don't just disappear, and Nathan was so understanding so it wouldn't surprise me if he wants to be with her again. He's a really, really good guy.
ย ย Addy remains silent, and that answers every question. "Oh, my God. You do!"
ย ย "I-I don'tโโ" She sighs loudly, accepting defeat. "Fine, whatever. I've just... I've missed him, I guess, and I feel horrible about how I treated him but he doesn't..." She pauses, looking uncertain. "He wouldn't want to get back together with me."
ย ย "How do you know unless you ask?" Lindsay asks, and I hum in agreement.
ย ย "I-I don't know."
ย ย "How about this?" Lindsay shuffles forward, planting both hands on Addy's shoulder. "If you approach Nathan about this, Lucy will talk to Tristan about the possibility of him leaving andโโ"
ย ย "Whoa, do notโโ"
ย ย "I'm part of the group now, right?" I nod. "Then I get to make harsh decisions too."
ย ย I'm stunned to silence, and Addy grins. "She's right. You and Tristan need to have a real conversation about him potentially leaving, Luce. You can't avoid it forever."
ย ย I slide back against the wall. "Whatever."
ย ย "Good." Lindsay grins, and I like how comfortable she seems to be with usโโ it's refreshing. "Anyway, once you talk to Nathan, and Lucy talks to Addy, then I'll let you set me up with Dean, okay?"
ย ย Addy looks at Lindsay, a wide smile on her face. "Really?"
ย ย She sighs. "Yes."
ย ย "Oh, I love playing matchmaker. I basically set up Tristan and Luce, you know?"
ย ย "Yes, you only remind me everyday," I grumble.
ย ย "Talk to your man, Lucy." Addy grasps my cheeks, squeezing my face tightly, and I squirm in her hold.
ย ย "Only if you talk to yours, bitch."
ย ย Addy gasps. "Wow, such strong language. What would Yale think?"
ย ย I roll my eyes, and Lindsay looks from Addy to me, a soft smile on her face. We turn to her, staring at her strangely. "This is nice."
ย ย We both crack a smile. "This is only the beginning."
ย ย And that's how me, Addy and Lindsay became a trio.
