The Weiss girl and I walked through the hall with guards on either side of us. She said very little while her eyes remained trained on her feet. There was this false sense of calmness exuding off of her, yet I have to admit that I was curious about her thoughts. Beyza Weiss certainly came off as quite the talkative tease from what I could pick up in our interrogation if you could call it that. Although, right now, that false calmness was evidently wavering before my eyes.
"Never thought I could see a Weiss shaking in her boots," the phrase escaped my lips purposefully. I knew that I would attract her attention with a statement.
"Funny. I'm surrounded by big, burly, color--" she cut herself off as my eyes immediately shot towards her for what she was about to say.
"Pardon, Weiss?" Any joking tone that I had with her before to make her feel somewhat less nervous, I suppose, left instantly. The fact that she could let the word slip off of her tongue so effortlessly did more than bother me.
The guard that she'd let down in the interrogation room was put right back up in a slew of well-formulated words.
"Forgive me. That was quite out of line. I have not adapted to where I am, and I realize that word is not one that should escape my lips here," and all over again, the same regret that conflicted me when I first accepted this mission flashed before my eyes. The only thing that kept me walking was a thought that rested at the back of my mind. "Andri. Even if he broke protocol... You owe him this much."
IT WAS A NORMAL NIGHT ATOP THE NEARLY FALLEN REGION CENTER. The wind sent a chill down my spine as the buzzing of the dismal streets went on. There was little to no light throughout the entire town as we found ourselves attempting to resist their so-called "aid." The line between Ivory and Melanite Falls could not have been more defined as the closely contrasting colors stood adjacent to each other. They loomed over one another, in an eerily beautiful manner. The two were side by side but were hundreds of feet apart at the same time. There were thousands and thousands of guards on opposite sides, watching for the slightest movement. The closest point allowed men to stand only seven feet away from one another, fighting for something that had apparently ended hundreds of years ago.
My thoughts carried on as I hovered atop the charcoal building but were soon interrupted by a pair of arms snaking around my waist. Instead of jumping in "fear," I glanced down at the figure's arms in search of any symbol of who they may be. Surely enough, a dark, permanent mark showed upon their chocolate skin. It was our symbol. The black cross surrounded by a fist upheld towards the sky. However, this person in particular had 'Andri' practically carved into the symbol.
"Blakely. What are you doing up here so late? You know doc said that it could start lightning any second. We wouldn't want those pretty little eyes of yours to get messed up." He had his head nestled into the crook of my neck as I felt the familiar scratching of his facial hair rubbing against me. I knew he hadn't meant to come across in such a way, but I couldn't help but think that the only reason I was there was because of my eyes. One seeing the truth... One seeing naturally. Their colors were fitting, too; One was brown for natural and the other was green for truth.
"Arold. You really shouldn't sneak up on people like that. You could get killed doing that." As I explained so, I could feel his smile growing. "Love, are you implying that you would be the one to kill me? If so... I'd die happy." He teased, not loosening his grip from my waist. His breathing was steady as I would feel his small breaths up against my neck. It was moments like these that I wished times could always be this simple, but then... What would be the point? There would be nothing to fight for.
"I always wonder what goes on in that pretty little head of yours. You always look so gorgeous in thought. Like no one can break you from it." He stated as I found him gazing at me, his nearly black eyes interlocking with my contrasting orbs. I hadn't realized that he released his grip from my waist until I found him standing in front of me. The absence of his grasp left me wanting his arms back where they were. Protecting me, if only for a few moments. "It scares me, though. You didn't even realize that I had moved. That can get you killed, love." He mumbled, averting his eyes away from my gaze when he approached the last sentence. Before I could reassure him, rain droplets began to fall upon us, shielding us in its cool capsules. Instead of running, I stayed put. "Arold. What did you want me for?" As I kept my gaze upon his features, I noticed his jaw clench. He should have realized I knew him all too well for him to be such a tease without wanting something.
"We need you for a meeting. It's urgent." He mumbled as the rain droplets started coming down heavily. His charcoal-colored eyes refused to make any sort of contact with me. "If it was urgent, why aren't the black lights flashing?" I questioned, obviously skeptical of the matter at hand. If a meeting was urgent, then we always had the black lights on. It was a code.
"Oh, Blakely." He sighed, drawing out my name as a pinch of his outlandish accent echoed in the dead of the night. "Always the inquisitive one aren't you?" His fingers danced upon the side of his leg, which were covered by black jeans. He smiled crazily as I saw a small twinkle in cynical eyes. "I would tell you, love. But... I've received orders not to. It's not my place. Just come with me, yeah?" His cynical expression hadn't fallen from his features as he motioned to the door that led inside the building.
His motion was painfully slow. It was captivating. Every single one of his movements was captivating; they just enthralled me. Perhaps it was just the Andri charm... One of many. Every single Andri had the ability to practically control a person's actions if they wished, but Arold had never tried such things upon me. I suppose it was because we had trusted each other enough not to use our abilities on one another.
"Fine, Andri," I smirked, as I knew his gaze was following my figure while walking towards the door. Before my hand could reach the door handle, there stood Arold holding the door open for me. "Always the gentlemen." I teased as he playfully rolled his eyes.
Arold was the one that got me to go to the meeting to accept Beyza Weiss as my assignment. Without him, I wouldn't have this opportunity to prove my worth.
"These are your quarters where you will be monitored at all times when you are present here. You have the freedom to roam the land to a certain extent. Guards will remain in your presence at all times, and if any harm comes to them, then there will be consequences. Go beyond your limits, and there will be consequences. Mention that word around our people, and there will be consequences. Understand?" I asked Beyza with my hands behind my back, looking down at her. I never realized how much taller I was than her. After all, she was slouching in that room nearly the entire time.
It took the Weiss girl a moment to respond. She seemed to be analyzing the space in which her quarters were. Perhaps she was surprised to have so much freedom that I was sure she wasn't receiving at home. They even treat their own people like slaves over there.
"Thank you," I nodded and began my stride towards the main hall. The pitter-patter of my feet echoing through the hallway.
"Blakely!" She shouted. I winced, hearing my name get called at such volume. I turned on my heel to face her with a stoic appearance... Khalil, Arold Andri's brother who committed to becoming apart of our military, stepped in front of her with a terrifying expression looming over his face. He towered over the Weiss girl who couldn't have been taller than 5'2".
"You do not use Miss Redd's first name without authorization." His voice boomed, causing that of even the other guards' exteriors to nearly falter.
"Andri. Please. That was the only name that she knew me by. What else was she to call me?" I gave him a reassuring smile before deadening my expression to face her. His face softened before returning to one of stone.
"Yes, Miss Weiss?"
"I... I'm sorry for nearly using that word to describe you all. It was wrong of me. I really do not think of you all like that. I rarely use the term." Her excuses made me laugh, not so much as a scoff, but it was rather a whole-hearted chorus that erupted from my chest.
"I'm sure... I'm sure that you believe that."
And with that, I turned on my heel yet again- leaving the Weiss girl in her own thoughts.
