CHAPTER FOURTEEN
MATE BOND

In the year: 1950

"HOW do you feel about mates?"

Thea frowns at the questions asked by her therapist and now a friend as well. "They're ok, I guess." Thea shrugs, "I've never given it much thought."

"You've never wondered when you were going to find your mate?"

Thea blinks faster now. "I'm sorry," she chuckles awkwardly, "why are we discussing mates right now?"

"Why not?"

Thea shrugs, "I don't know, it just—why?" She stumbles over her words. Thea was genuinely confused. She hadn't thought about romance. "I've never thought about any type of love since the father of my child."

Carmilla hums, "You don't talk about him much and whenever you do, it's short and filled with plenty of passive-aggressive comments."

Thea pulls her lips in, sounds about right, "because he was a shitty guy that I thought was the love of my life but he just left me when I needed him the most. There's not much more to say."

"Chances are, you will find your mate one day, and whenever I mention that you seem to have the complete opposite reaction from the usual vampire."

"Well, I'm not the usual vampire," Thea emphasized.

Carmilla laughs and crosses her legs, "true. But still...why don't you want a mate?"

"Because things tend to be destroyed whenever it's placed into my life," Thea confesses.

She'd grown close to Carmilla and was no longer afraid to speak whatever was on her mind.

"I know that's easy for you to believe but I think a mate bond is just the thing you need right now." Carmilla rights in her notepad.

Thea crosses her arms, "why do you believe that?"

"You need someone who will balance you, Thea. Someone who is calmer and the sunshine to your storm."

Thea went silent but soon retorted, "Cute, but no thanks." She walks towards the door.

"You know we're not done talking about this." Carmilla simply shook her head as she jotted down on her notepad.

Thea tightly smiles, "Yeah, I guessed that."

"I think she's right, Thea." Rosalie huffs as she blocks another one of Thea's punches while training.

They'd grown a habit of fighting. Not seriously, of course, but it was a way for both of the women to express any negative emotion they were feeling at the time.

And Thea needed this at the moment. She didn't know why, but her conversation with Carmilla made her...almost upset.

"What?" Thea's nose scrunches up. She swiftly moves out of the way of Rosalie's kick and while she's in the midst of the move, she kicks Rosalie's other leg from up under her, making her back hit the dirt. "I don't need another man in my life."

Rosalie playfully rolls her eyes and lets Thea help her up off the ground,  "Thea, whoever your mate is, I think they'll make you happy."

Thea squints, setting her feet in the dirt, "I'm already happy...Your defense." She harshly plows her fist through the air to Rosalie's gut.

Rosalie grabs her fist. Smirking, "you sure? You seem to be Miss Moody all the time?"

Thea's mouth fell open, "says you!" She snatched her hand away and sent easy punches. Rosalie dodges all and grips Thea's arm, attempting to pull her to the ground.

Thea landed back on her feet with one simple flip and took the opportunity to try and elbow Rosalie. She stops her elbow seconds before it touches her nose. She grins proudly. "I win."

Rosalie rolls her eyes, "I let you win, Thea McCarty."

Thea yawns tauntingly, "Whatever helps you sleep at night—oh wait." She grins.

Esme walks out wearing brown shorts and a white shirt tucked into it. Her hair was tied back in a high ponytail. "I'm going hunting, you girls coming?"

Rosalie nods, lightly shoving past Thea, who still wore her smile. "Yeah, we're coming."

Thea and Emmett were sat on the roof. The siblings had claimed it as their hangout spot ever since they'd met.

"You're right, you don't need a mate, no man is good enough for you." Emmett wore a glare at the thought of his little sister with some guy.

"That's what I said!" Thea exclaims. Finally, someone was on her side. "I can't even see myself ever being in another relationship since—"

"Thea."

"Since that dick that I thought was the love of my life." Thea hisses.

"Thea."

Thea raises her hands, "I was so naive to think he could ever—"

"Thea!" Emmett hushed her, pointing at two figures walking towards the doorstep of their home.

Thea tilts her head, seeing a blonde-haired boy and a pixie-haired girl. "Who the hell is that?"

"Don't know but they're vampires."

Esme opens the door when she hears the knock and her eyes fill with confusion at the sight of the two vampires.

"Hi!" The pixie was the one to speak. "I'm Alice. This is Jasper."

Thea squints, her voice was so angelic and soft.

Thea didn't know why but something told her that her life was about to change even further.

Thea watches Carlisle and Esme speak to Alice and Jasper in his office. There was a small crack from where the door wasn't completely shut and Thea let her curiosity get the better of her and watched with her golden eyes.

Thea listened to how Alice claims she has a vision of the future, how she's able to see things before they happen. She claimed Jasper could manipulate emotions.

Thea's eyes were cold. She didn't trust it. She's lying, she's just manipulating them. A small voice exclaimed in Thea's head and she believed it.

"Let me introduce you to the others." Carlisle leads them out of his office.

Thea's eyes widen and she uses her vampire speed to go out the back door and into the forest. She didn't understand how Carlisle and Esme could easily welcome them into their home but then again, they welcomed her, a killer.

Thea walked further into the forest, following a path that led her to a small river that was hidden.

She'd found this beautiful scenery after a session with Carmilla. She'd told Thea that whenever she felt overwhelmed, find your peace. That peace could be in a person, place, or even an object.

Her peace was this river and her locket, which she was currently fiddling with. Her feet were submerged in the cool water.

But still, she knew she couldn't stay at this river forever even though she so badly wanted to. She would have to go back eventually but for now, she enjoyed her peace at the river.

Thea stayed at the river all day, it was night when she finally returned to her home. Due to her vampire hearing, she could hear the laughs and chuckles of her family inside the home.

And Thea heard her.

Why was everything about her so damn angelic? Thea thought and rolled her eyes.

She walks through the front door. Immodestly catching eyes with Esme. "Thea, there you are! We were starting to worry but Rosalie told us you were fine."

Thea looked over to Rosalie and she was cuddled up next to Emmett. "Thanks, Rose." Thea quietly thanks her.

Alice physically tensed on the couch. Jasper had to send waves her way to calm her down. Alice's thoughts were spiraling, There she was. Thea McCarty, My M—

"We have some people we'd like to introduce you to, they'll be here for some time." Carlisle smiled softly Thea's way.

Thea's fist tightened. She didn't want to know them.

"This is Jasper Whitlock. He's an empath who can manipulate emotions. And this is Mary Alice Brandon, but she just goes by Alice. She has subjective precognition. She sees the future."

Both their eyes dilated at the sight of each other. Thea feels an indescribable shift within her. The intensity leaves her both intrigued and unsettled.

Carmilla sat in her chair and looks over to Thea suspiciously but when she looked between Thea and Alice, she didn't seem as confused.

Thea didn't even speak, just tightly smiled and got upstairs as quickly as she could, leaving them calling for her.
