𝔳𝔦. Special Ability

CHAPTER SIX
SPECIAL ABILITY

In the year: 1939

"SOME vampires have a special ability that manifests from their greatest trait as a human," Carlisle explains to Thea, who he now had standing in their backyard across from Rosalie Hale. "For example, Edward is a telepath."

"Which means?" Thea waits for his explanation.

"He can read the thoughts of others."

Thea nods, "I'm still a little confused. What am I doing?" She signals to her environment.

"We think you might have an ability as well, but I'm not too sure." Carlisle crosses his arms.

"But I never had any great traits as a human," Thea claims.

Edward shakes his head, "that's not exactly true. You think that you can be anyone you want to be because of your mother, you're used to being someone you're not."

Thea shifts uneasily on her feet.

Emmett slaps the back of Edward's head, "that's an invasion of privacy, dude."

"So what are you saying?"

"We think that you might be... shifting into other people." Carlisle answers. "So to test this theory, you're gonna fight Rose."

Thea looks over at the blonde, who sends her a wink.

"Why do I have to fight her."

"Your power may have manifested when you...killed...your mother," Carlisle spoke with uncertainty. "It was a tense situation. We think we can trigger it again by putting you into another tense situation."

"By fighting Rosalie?" Thea raised her brows.

"Yes."

"I don't know how to...fight," Thea informs him.

"That's okay." Carlisle smiles slightly, "Rosalie will come at you and you just simply try defending yourself."

Thea was uncomfortable and scared, "okay."

Rosalie digs her flats into the dirt. "Tell me when." She looks at Thea.

Thea was contemplating running in the opposite direction. "...Now."

Rosalie takes off towards Thea, Thea underestimated her vampire speed because she was quick to knock her off her feet and land on the ground with a gasp.

"Don't be afraid to defend yourself," Esme spoke worryingly by the look on Thea's face.

Rosalie's foot was coming down towards Thea's abdomen and it was coming fast, Thea twisted just in time. Rosalie left a splitting crack in the dirt.

Thea quickly gets to her feet, eyes wide, "hold on—time out—"

A clean-cut kick to Thea sends her flying into the tree behind her. It wasn't enough to cause her pain but she surely felt the impact.

"You feel defenseless? Not in control?" Rosalie raises a brow as she steps towards her.

Thea squints, not understanding what the blonde was getting at.

"Okay—I don't think I want to do this anymore." Thea steps back, trying to signal to Rosalie that she is finished.

Her mind traveled back to the cries of her child, and she closed her eyes, trying to get the traumatizing memory out of her head.

"C'mon." Rosalie scoffs, nudging Thea slightly, "You seem pretty bold with your choices lately."

Thea felt a familiar frustration boil, "I'm done." She spoke calmly for the last time.

Emmett frowns, "Let's just give her some time."

Rosalie takes another step towards Thea and that was all it took for Thea to push Rosalie with all her strength. This caused the blonde to slide across the dirt, coming to a stop by the Cullen home.

Thea glared, not even caring enough to apologize for her actions. She was quick to run further into the forest, leaving the Cullens to care for the blonde.

A lake. It was almost hidden away in the towering trees but if you went far enough, you could find the large body of water. Thea watched how the sun's rays glistened on the liquid, making it seem like a thousand diamonds.

Her thoughts were racing but her heart was frozen, forever stuck in a state of severe anxiety.

She naturally brought her knees up to her chest, her head falling. She was scared, how could she not be?

She didn't deserve this...well—that's what she wanted to believe. But was she any better than the people who'd hurt her?

She just wanted to cry, shed one singular tear. But she couldn't and that made it all worse. She grunts in irritation, her face falling into her hands.

"Thea?"

The voice made her snap her head up quickly, turning to see Carlisle Cullen.

Thea saw the expression on his face, he was concerned.

"I'm sorry...I'm crazy." Thea nods, her eyes returning to the lake, "I know that."

"Thea, you're not crazy—"

"Yes, I am." Thea cut him off, "And I can't stop it...I can't." She runs her fingers to her head.  "...I can't live with this."

Carlisle rests his hand on her shoulder.

Thea finally connects their eyes. Her former icy blues are now a cold crimson red. "You should've let me die."

And Thea meant it...she meant every word.

"I'd rather be dead than live without my baby." Thea confessed, "I just want my baby."

Carlisle tries to comfort her further by placing his arm around her shoulder but Thea suddenly shoved him aggressively, quickly standing.

Carlisle looks up at Thea, confused by her aggression.

"You did this to me." Thea squints her eyes, teeth clenching.

Carlisle frowns, shaking his head, "Thea, I—"

"You ruined my life." Thea took a step back, her bare legs grazing against the neglected grass.

Carlisle eyes filled with guilt, "I was only trying to help you."

"You call this helping!" Thea spat, "Making me go without my child is helping...having to live with the fact that I killed my family...you call that helping?"

Carlisle presses his lips together.

Thea suddenly laughs.

It wasn't one of those sarcastic laughs that people do, it was a serious laugh, a stomach-holding laugh. A genuine laugh. "Guess I can't blame that last one on you. Just me being mentally insane, right?" She taps her temple.

Carlisle doesn't respond.

Thea doesn't say another word, simply walking back to the house that she would now have to call home.

Thea sat on the window seal, now watching birds with her new enhanced vision. One bird was larger than the rest and it seemed to be tending to the smaller ones by feeding them worms.

Although Thea's heart wasn't beating, she felt something inside of her ache at the sight. So she turned her head away painfully.

There was a knock on the door.

Thea kept quiet, hoping whoever was on the other side wouldn't enter.

Sadly, her hopes were wrong, because walking in was a familiar muscular man with a newspaper in hand. He smiled softly, "There's more news regarding your family, I thought maybe you would want to know about it."

Thea walks over to him, accepting the newspaper.

"After undergoing psychiatric evaluation at a medical facility, Harper Quarts has been convicted of the homicide of her mother, Ethel Quarts, and her sister, Ava Quarts, resulting in a life sentence."

That's when it hit. A pang of guilt. A guilt she knows she shouldn't be feeling but here she was, feeling sorry for the person who'd been a part of making her life hell.

Thea fidgeted with the newspaper in her hands.

"Thea." Emmett called her name, "Are you okay?"

Thea shakes her head, running her fingers through her hair. She believed she was a monster, someone incapable of being redeemed after such evil actions.

Thea knew what she had to do. She had to let them go. She had to let her baby go and accept what she was.

She rested the newspapers to her side and looked up at Emmett, "Is Rosalie upset with me?"

Emmett smiled, "besides the fact she had to clean dirt out of her hair, not so much."

Thea lifted her brows for a quick second. "Tell her that we need to test Carlisle's theory one more time."

"You sure?"

"Positive."

"Same thing as last time, just try your best," Carlisle spoke but Thea seemed to ignore him.

Esme smiled worryingly, "Try not to damage my house this time, please."

Thea mouths an apology, getting a reassuring smile from Esme.

Thea had her hair pushed back into a bun, and her eyes soon connected with Rosalie, "Ready when you are."

Rosalie noticed her attitude had changed drastically from their last encounter. She didn't seem scared and more so, invested. Her feet no longer backed away, but instead, took a step forward.

Rosalie runs forward and Thea follows, Rosalie steps out of the path before they could butt heads and tries pushing her to the dirt. Thea grabs her wrist and uses her other to send a strong newborn punch to Rosalie's face, sending her back on her feet.

Thea steps forward, going in for another hit but a swift kick to her leg from Rosalie sends her falling to her knees.

Emmett looks closely at Thea's neck and his eyes widen while he taps on Carlisle's shoulder, "Look."

When Carlisle examined the newborn, it almost seemed as if crystals were forming on her skin, and it slowly spread across the rest of her neck.

"Fascinating," Esme mumbles in amazement.

Rosalie tackles Thea, and both go rolling and are stopped by a tree.

Thea felt something switch inside her. An anger, a fire that would never be put out. Thea grunts, jumping to her feet and wrapping her hand around Rosalie's neck, and pinning her against the tree.

Rosalie's eyes were wide. Not because of Thea's strength but because of something else.

Rosalie was looking back at a splitting image of herself.

"Thea?"

Emmett calling her name seemed to snap her out of her dazed state. Her grip on Rosalie loosens and she drops to the ground.

Emmett takes a step off their back porch, providing Thea with a hand mirror.

Thea almost screamed, almost jumped out of her skin.

Or...Rosalie's skin.

Thea looked identical to her, she no longer possessed dark brown hair, but a rich blonde. No more crimson red eyes but a glowing golden.

Thea locked eyes with Emmett, "What the hell?"

ragerwrites, Soooo, I have a few questions. Are we liking this ability? Do any of you think this plot is too confusing?
