** warning : suggestive comments, talks of bad childhood & long ish chapter **
The soft cartoon voices from the turned on TV travels through the household, the dark clouds outside mirroring the atmosphere inside the room also. Sitting on the carpet leaning against the table placed in the living room, was Abby, and the Diaz twins.
(Y/N) had a blanket around herself and Abby cuddled up against her side drawing in her book, and would sometimes show the older girl, or Issac, and soon went back to finishing up the piece of work.
Issac wrapped his arm loosely around them both wearing a jumper over himself, and grey sweatpants that were also too big for him. A permanent frown was itched onto his face, ever since finding out what had happened to his sister back at Freddy's pizzeria.
It's not like he blamed Mike for her blood nose, and it wasn't that big of a deal, but its the fact she had gotten that in the place was what bothered him the most. And also the fact that his best friend, whom he knew was in love with (Y/N) let her go from his side, which had him confused at that very thought.
"That's a pretty drawing Abbs." Her soft voice snaps him out of his thoughts, glancing down to see her smiling at Abby and tapping the piece of paper that was being coloured in.
Abby beams up at (Y/N) happily flashing a quick grin, hair falling out of the small piggy tail Issac did for her, making the Diaz girl brush it back fondly, and chuckled as Abby scrunches her nose up in response.
The sound of footsteps were heard behind them coming from within the kitchen, making the twins turn their heads to see Mike sitting on the couch holding onto a badge from the pizzeria. She smiled in greeting at the male, while Issac rolled his eyes looking back to the cartoon playing on the TV.
"Hey, Abbs, what are you working on?" Mike asked his sister gently which gained no response, causing (Y/N) to nudge her side a little bit, and gave Mike a sorrowful look. He sighed heavily, "All right. I guess you don't want this, then." He holds out the badge for Abby, who now perked up taking the metal from his hand.
Abby inspected the piece in her hand closely flicking it around back and forth, as the twins share a hopeful look that she would finally open up to Mike more, "It's cool, huh?" Mike smiles a bit widely with his chin in his palm, and it had (Y/N) fawning over how cute he looked.
All hope was shot down when Abby went back to blanked face, placing the badge onto the table behind her without looking, and went back to drawing quietly on her paper with the pens.
A sigh escaped Mike's lips as he stood up from the couch, his shoulders slumping with dejection. The weight of his efforts, his attempts to balance work and family, hung heavily on his shoulders. He heaved open the draws near the dinning table, and chucked the metal inside it.
He swallowed the lump in his throat, hands gripping the sides of the wood as he turned to look at Abby, "I'm trying my best, Abby, okay?" His stuffy voice speaks, only gaining a small glance from her, and a sigh from Issac.
(Y/N), her heart aching for him, watched the scene unfold from her place beside Issac and Abby on the floor. Seeing the disappointment in Mike's eyes, she couldn't bear to stay seated.
"Izzy, stay with Abby for a bit." She ordered gently, her voice carrying a soothing reassurance. With purpose, she got up from the floor and followed Mike into the kitchen away from them, her steps quick but gentle.
He was leant against the counter top with a distant look in his eyes, arms folded up over his chest as he runs his fingers through his hair. He only briefly glance up to see her figure coming around the corner, and glanced back down to the tiled floor when she came closer to him.
As she walked up to him in the kitchen, she placed two figures under his chin, her touch light but firm, and nudged it up slightly to indicate she wanted to see his dark eyes. And when he slowly did, she took this chance to talk.
"Mike," She started off soft and understanding, trailing her other hand up to his forearm soothingly, "You're doing your best, and that's all that matters. Abbs sees how hard you're trying. Your efforts don't go unnoticed."
He just pursed his lips in thought flickering his gaze all over her face close to his, and exhaled shakily, "Yeah, but she doesn't think that." He murmured, clearing his throat to speak louder, "And now Izzy doesn't seem to trust me with you after what happened."
She narrowed her eyes down on his slightly taller figure in front of her, moving a step forward to press her chest just onto his, "You know what Issac is like when it comes to me," She reminded, trailing her fingers up to brush back Mike's hair off his forehead smiling, "And I told you, it's fine. I was just clumsy and head butted the stupid table."
A quiet amused snort escaped him hearing her words, followed by a fond smirk perking up, but than it faded away as quick as it happened, "That's not the point, though-" He stopped himself mid away from exposing himself, eyes brimming with unshed tears, his vulnerability exposed.
(Y/N) frowned sadly not understanding, but pulled him into a tight embrace, wrapping her arms around him in a gesture of comfort and support. One arm around his middle back tightly, while the other slipped up into his locks at the back of his head.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, releasing a heavy exhale onto her skin, his grip on her just short of desperate. Her presence was a balm to his wounded spirit, and he clung to her, seeking solace in her warmth.
For a moment, they stood there, locked in an embrace that transcended words, finding strength in each other. But their moment of comfort was shattered by a loud crash from the living room. They broke apart, their eyes meeting in shared alarm, before rushing back into the living room to investigate the source of the disturbance.
As they entered the room, they found Abby staring wide-eyed at the the piece of yellow paper in her hand on the floor, the cabinet she pulled out fallen around her, as Issac crouched beside her, hands lingering just inches from her sad figure.
The air was heavy with tension that had no one speaking, and the three adults share a small look with one another. That was until Abby's small voice break the silence, "I made a mess." She whispered squeezing the FAMILY COURT MATTER paper in her hands, "I'm sorry."
(Y/N)'s face shifted into a guilty one hearing how upset the little girl sounded, lifting up her elbow to nudge Mike forward to talk to her, "They're just..." He trailed off taking the paper from her, "they're just papers, all right? They don't mean anything."
Issac nodded his head, running his hand up and down Abby's back reassuringly, "Exactly, Abbs. It doesn't mean anything." He comforted her gently, sending a harsh look to Mike making him flinch back guilty also, "You're staying here, with us. No matter what."
"Then why does he have them?" She retorted back weakly, pointing a finger in her stiff brothers position beside (Y/N) standing up in the hallway, looking between the adults for answers as to why.
The Diaz girl decided to stay quiet for once knowing her beloved needed to deal with this, but pressed her side against his to remind him that she was right here. Mike melted into her comfort, "Well, that's complicated." He answered scratching the back of his head, "Aunt Jane-"
Abby made a disgusted noise rolling her eyes, "I hate her. She's mean and she smells like cigarettes." She whined in a complain, throwing her hand up into the air which gained soft chuckles from the trio watching her, "It's not funny!"
"You're right, it's not. It's just, uh..." Mike trailed off leaning against the wall on his other side, as his arm had slipped around (Y/N)'s waist tightly, "I don't know, it's nice that we can finally agree about something."
The Diaz girl looks at the two siblings with a fond glint in her eyes, really happy they were at least talking even if it wasn't the best of conversations. Her (E/C) eyes find Issac's similar ones, who sent a bright grin over Abby's head, making her snort amused watching him.
The room fell into an uneasy silence as a knock echoed through the house, interrupting the conversation between the group, as the sound rippled through the air, leaving an apprehensive stillness in its wake.
The three adults exchanged puzzled glances before rising in unison to investigate the unexpected visitor. With cautious steps, Mike reached the front door and pulled it open, revealing Vanessa, the police officer they had met during their time working at Freddy's Pizzeria.
"Hey. Vanessa." Mike greeted a bit uneasy seeing her standing there, pressing a hand onto the wall of the door, as (Y/N)'s head pops up over his shoulder, and feels Issac come up on her other side next to Mike.
Vanessa said their names back in a greeting, her presence at the doorstep seemed to catch Isaac off guard. His usually confident demeanor faltered, and he flushed noticeably, clearly surprised by Vanessa's striking appearance.
"H-hey, I'm Issac-" He internally scolded himself hearing the stutter in his voice, a nervous smile over his face holding out a hand for Vanessa to shake, "This idiots twin brother." He adds using his spare hand to point at his siblings amused beside him.
(Y/N) and Mike exchanged a knowing look, seizing the opportunity to tease him back, a playful revenge for the times he had teased them about their relationship. But knew better than to open their mouths, and kept quiet watching the interaction.
Vanessa raised her eyebrows up at Issac surprised, nodding her head as a warm smile crossed her mouth, "Vanessa Shelly." She informs shaking his hand in the middle, "Nice to meet you, Issac."
He just flashed another awkward grin that had half of his face scrunching up, pulling back down his hand to stand beside (Y/N) again, who smirked mocking at his flushed cheeks, gaining a scowling stare back.
Abby appears in the gap between Mike who had his arm around the Diaz's girl waist again, to keep her pressed against his side as he leant onto the door hinge, thumb rubbing onto her exposed skin slowly.
"Vanessa, this is Abby." He introduced motioning with his spare hand to his sister now holding onto Issac's hand, who was still red in the face, "Abby, Vanessa."
"Hi, Abby." She smiled gently at the younger girl, arms crossed over her chest which held something familiar in them. Her eyes flickered back to (Y/N), and Mike a bit knowingly, "I didn't know you guys had a daughter."
Everyone had different reactions hearing that. First, (Y/N)'s cheeks flushed with embarrassment, the misunderstanding igniting her face with warmth.
She shifted awkwardly on her feet, trying to find the right words to clarify the situation. Mike, feeling the tension, tightened his arms around her waist, a silent gesture for her to stay still and stop squirming against him.
"U-uh, no-" He stumbled out caught off guard, lips parting in shock to move his gaze down to the Diaz girl in his hold, and swallowed dryly adjusting himself on the door's wall.
His embarrassment was mingled with a flicker of something deeper— a desire for a future that involved children, a future he had only just started to entertain seriously. His thoughts, for a moment, took a not-so-innocent turn, imagining the process of bringing children into the world with (Y/N).
Meanwhile, Isaac couldn't resist the opportunity to tease, a smirk playing on his lips as he watched the unfolding scene, "Now that's hilarious." He muttered to himself, amusement at the situation being clear, though he wisely refrained from voicing his thoughts aloud.
Abby, ever the quick thinker, decided to play along, "Oh, no," She grimaced with a faux-disgusted expression, waving her hands in dismissal, "I'm not their kid, which I wish they had one. I'm just Mike's sister though."
Her words, meant to clarify the misunderstanding, only served to deepen the awkwardness in the room. Vanessa, realizing her mistake swiftly changed the topic of conversation, "I need to talk to you about something important." Her serious words were aimed at the three adults in front of her.
(Y/N) nodded her head pushing herself from Mike's strong hold around her waist, moving Issac back a bit for a second ignoring his offended gasp, "Can you go into your room for a little bit, so we can talk?" She asked of Abby gently, taking the girl by her shoulders.
She was instantly following the orders from the older one, turning her head to grin sweetly at Vanessa, "It's nice to meet you." She chirped gaining a small wave back, before Abby disappeared down the hallway to her room leaving the four by themselves.
"What, um..." Mike spoke up suspiciously after Abby left them, rising his hand above (Y/N)'s head to pull the door more close behind them, "what are you doing here?"
Vanessa crossed her arms over her chest again pursing her lips, "Somebody broke into Freddy's." She revealed to them, causing the trio's eyes to expand in shock, and for her to pull out Mike's sleep pills, "Recognise these?"
Oh shit that's not good, the Diaz girl thought to herself in a curse, shoulders slumping a bit knowing this didn't look good on Mike's behalf, "Look, it's not what you think, okay?" She tried to defend her best friend, who shifted uncomfortable beside her next to Issac.
"I know what they are, it's written on the bottle." The officer grumbled back rustling the object around, as a flash of anger passes through her eyes staring at the two, "News flash: If you're too whacked out to remember to lock a friggin' door, accident or not, you're liable. It's called criminal negligence."
Issac frowned a bit not enjoying the way she was treating his twin, and best friend, even if he did find the officer attractive in a way. On the other hand, (Y/N)'s shoulder squared up protectively, and went to open her mouth to spit something back, but Mike's large hand on top of her head made the girl stop before she could talk.
"You wouldn't understand." Mike murmured in a low voice lifting up his hand from the girls head, and lowered his to look at the ground, seeing no point in explaining to someone whom didn't matter that much to him.
"Well, then help me." Vanessa stated strongly tilting her head to the side, and sighed heavily through her nose looking between them, "'Cause the moment I file that report, it's out of my hands."
Mike kicked the hinge of he green door thinking for a second, his eyes meeting Issac's who nodded his head at him, and then glance down to feel (Y/N)'s fingers brushing against his reassuringly, "You want to take a walk?"
🎈💨
The four of them moved to a more quieter and peaceful area to talk about the recent events, as a small river filters through in front of them, splitting two different sections of small hills on their side. One had old houses full of greener, while the other had them sitting on a log on the soft grass below beneath their shoes.
Vanessa sat down on the other side of Issac on the log, who tensed up straight away feeling her so close to his side. (Y/N) was in between her brother, and Mike on the left side of her, as she bit back an amused grin watching her twin freak out again over the officer.
"So I used to have a brother. His name was Garrett." Mike's gravelly voice starts to talk now, catching the three's attention as he exhales heavily not enjoying remembering what happened, "And when I was about 12, he was taken. And I was there when it happened."
(Y/N)'s heart clenches for Mike also remembering him telling her about that when they were children, and holding his sobbing figure in her arms as he did so. She shuffled a bit closer to his side so their shoulders touched, and waited to see if he wanted more physical contact as he talked.
"They never found the guy who did it, and they never found my brother." He continues explaining slipping his fingers through hers tightly now on her thigh, as Vanessa frowns sadly at Mike's information, "So there's this theory that, we can't forget things. Basically, it says that every single thing you see in your entire life, down to the tiniest of details, gets stored inside of you. You just have to know how to look."
Mike knew what he was saying was true, since its happened to him once about (Y/N), the love of his life. He had a bad memory growing up which gotten better as he grew, but one day when they were younger, he couldn't seem to recall what her favourite flower was since he wanted to surprise her on her birthday.
And so he used that technique to think back to the exact moment when he helped her plant red flowers in the garden bed at a park, and how she was ranting about how special they were. The same day he made that promise to be by her side always.
He remembered the way her face lit up like the sun holding up the red flower, and bought those exact ones for her, all thanks to that one moment he locked away inside his memory forever.
"Your brother-" Vanessa's voice snapped the male out of his inner thoughts, her face set in a curious expression looking past Issac to Mike, "you think you saw who took him?"
"I know I did." Mike confirmed strongly using his free hand to tap his temple, "And I know that he's in there, but he's just- he's-" He stumbled his words out making (Y/N) rub her thumb over his knuckles, "It's buried. So every night, I dream, and I go back to that same memory, and I search for details. For any little thing that got overlooked."
Vanessa reminded quiet glancing down at the bottle of pills in her hand, while Issac squeezed Mike's shoulder over his twins back despite still being pissed at him, but knew his best friend needed some reassurance right now.
"Yeah. And that's usually the part where people tell me I'm crazy." Mike mumbled shifting in his spot not hearing anything from the officer, his dark eyes glancing away from them with a tight lipped smile. Not like he expected anything different though.
(Y/N) furrowed her brows upset looking up at Mike, heart squeezing once again getting reminder how he felt and viewed himself, "You're not crazy, Mike." She assured softly squeezing his trembling hand in hers, and pressed her lips onto his clothed shoulder, "You're far from it."
"Exactly what (N/N) said, bro. None of us think that about you." Issac was next to reassure and agree with his twin, turning his head to look at Mike with a small smile gracing his mouth, leaning back on his palms more to block Vanessa's view from the duo's display.
Mike whispered his thanks to the Diaz girl, by brushing his lips against her ear being leant on his shoulder, followed by a faint warm kiss onto her skin, that had her shivering and sitting up straighter as Vanessa talked again.
"I've seen my fare share of crazy. This isn't it." She stated also comforting the conflicted male, her eyes being on the river the entire time as she heaves in a sigh, "Not even close. And these?" She holds up the bottle of pills, asking Mike what they were for.
He tensed a bit in his spot on the log, and coughed into his spare fist, "I mean, going back to the same dream, the same place night after night, it's not easy, so the pills help." He explains quietly, "Some other things, like familiar sights, familiar sounds."
Or if (Y/N)'s by my side where I can hold her.... he wanted to add onto the list boldly, but knew it wasn't the time or place right now to be voicing his affection for the girl, who was still pressed up against him on the wood.
"'Pining for fun?'" Vanessa quoted the words on the poster she saw in the cameras room back at Freddy's, gaining soft chuckles from the trio, and Mike went to finish the sentence back, "'Vist Nebraska'."
Once Mike had finished, Vanessa, her curiosity piqued, turned her attention to the Diaz siblings, "I'm curious about your childhood too." She said gently, her voice carrying genuine interest, "Are your parents in the picture or other siblings?"
(Y/N) and Issac exchanged a brief, hesitant look, their shared history flashing silently between them, as she felt Mike's calloused thumb now rub over the back of her hand comforting, his time to offer her support.
Issac's reassuring gaze met hers, a silent promise to handle the conversation clearly communicated. With a deep breath, he began to speak, his voice steady but tinged with the weight of their past, and wrapped his built arms around his knees.
"Our parents... well, they weren't the best," He started, his dark eyes fixed on the river in front as if searching for solace in its depths, "The very few memories we have of them involves yelling, arguments, or worse."
(Y/N) swallowed hard fiddling with Mike's fingers to distract herself, and picked up where her brother left off, "They disappeared without a word, leaving us with nothing but an inheritance and each other." Her voice carried a mix of sadness and acceptance sighing, "I'm grateful for the money, but not when it's from two even more shittier people."
Listening to their story, Vanessa's figure tensed imperceptibly, which gained (Y/N)'s attention. She noticed the change, a subtle shift in the officers posture that didn't align with the empathetic demeanor she had displayed earlier.
Suspicion flickered in the Diaz girls mind, but she chose not to voice it as of now, feeling Mike's grip on her hand tighten in response to her unspoken concern, and his other arm to wrap around her shoulders loosely.
"We believe they're still alive somewhere," Issac continued, his words laced with bitterness, as his jaw clenches tightly looking to Vanessa, "But they left us without any explanation, no warning or anything and without any care for what would happen to us."
"So yeah. No other siblings, it's just us two." She offered a weak smile at the silent Vanessa next to her twin, "Not that it bothers us though, since we practically raised one another. Couldn't care less about where our so called parents are." She added shrugging her shoulders, and leant into Mike's side a bit feeling him coaxing her there.
As she spoke, Vanessa's expression remained neutral, but an undercurrent of discomfort rippled beneath the surface, "You four, you still have each other." She finally spoke up, word holding an extra meaning behind them that none of them picked up, "From where I sit, I'd say you're lucky."
Mike could agree with that statement, since without (Y/N), the one whom he loved most in the world just like Abby and Issac, he would of longed left by now, but no he stayed. Because he had a three purposes in life. One, to find his missing brothers kidnapper, two, make sure Abby and Issac get the life they deserver, and three, marry the girl cradled in his arms.
Before any conversation went on between them, the sound of Vanessa's radio going off broke the silence and ended the peaceful aura between the four, "I should go."
She stood up with a sigh, chucking the pills into the river in front before scolding Mike slightly, "No more sleeping on the job." She glanced between the trio seriously, before walking away to her car, "When you're at Freddy's, you stay alert."
🎈💨
The fading sunlight cast a warm glow over the room as (Y/N) and Mike prepared for their third night at Freddy's Pizzeria. The dimming evening sky outside painted the atmosphere with a soft orange hue, a stark contrast to the upcoming night that would be spent in the eerie confines of the pizzeria.
Mike's fingers tapped impatiently on the wall-mounted phone as he tried to reach Max, the second babysitter they had hired for Abby when Issac needed to focus on his studies inside the room that was made for him.
(Y/N), standing next to him adorned in one of his oversized jumpers, watched the futile attempts with growing worry. Max's lack of response only deepened her concern, and only heard her prerecord voice over the scratchy line.
When Max didn't answer once again, Mike let out a sigh of frustration, placing the phone back into its holder. He turned to to his best friend with a grimace, clearly perturbed by the situation, "This is just great."
She chuckled knowingly, understanding the predicament, "Looks like Izzy gets his way. They are coming with us tonight." She mused crossing her arms over her chest, voice carrying amusement.
He grumbled rolling his eyes, well aware of the truth in her words. He grabbed her by the waist with his larger hands suddenly, bending down to her height and nuzzled his face into the crook of her neck.
She yelps not expecting to feel him so close again from just coming out of the shower, her back meeting the wall in the kitchen gently, arms placing onto his broad shoulders to level herself. She dearly hoped the other two didn't come around the corner to see them like this.
Mike's playful nips onto her skin sent shivers down her spine, "I wanted to be alone with you, love." He murmured suggestively, his tone low and seductive against her, as he noses along her jawline slowly.
(Y/N) felt her face warm up furiously, feeling a mixture of embarrassment and excitement at his words. She squirmed in his strong hold, trying to maintain her composure, "W-we'll have alone time in your bedroom-" she stammered, her voice betraying her nervousness.
But her words only seemed to fuel Mike's mischievous grin. He let out a low chuckle as she pushed him away, fleeing to find Issac and Abby, her cheeks aflame with embarrassment. Mike followed her, his laughter trailing behind him, his eyes never leaving her as he moved toward where she stood with the other two.
The moment they entered the dining room, Issac's keen eyes immediately caught the flustered expression on his twin sister's face. Suspicion clouded his gaze as he questioned them, unable to ignore the unusual tension between the two.
"What's going on?" He asked narrowing his eyes down on Mike, and then back to his sister standing up from his spot beside a grinning Abby, "Why do you look so flustered, (N/N)?"
Mike, clearly enjoying the situation, wore a smug smirk. He didn't respond immediately, reveling in Issac's curiosity. Instead, he casually slipped a teasing hand into the back pocket of (Y/N)'s pants, his touch sending a wave of embarrassment through her, as she felt him just shy of touching he butt.
She stumbled slightly, her cheeks feeling even warmer, "It's nothing, Izzy," She stammered, attempting to cover her embarrassment with a weak smile, "Just a total silly joke between us."
Issac hummed suspiciously walking around them slowly eyeing Mike off who was chuckling amused, "Alright than," He sighed grabbing onto Abby's hand, who was beaming excited to go to the pizzeria, "Let's get going than before I end up punching Mike."
The said male instantly paled in the face with a nervous expression, while (Y/N) and Abby broke out into a small fit of laugher finding how Mike reacted hilarious, and the way Issac was scowling at him annoyed.
