𝑩𝑨𝑵𝑺𝑯𝑬𝑬: A Banshee is said to be a supernatural being in Irish legend and her scream is believed to be an omen of death. The scream is also called 'caoine' which means 'keening' and is a warning that there will be an imminent death. Banshees are special human women who have the supernatural power to sense and predict when someone is about to die. As a result, they are considered harbingers of death and are often referred to as the 'Wailing Woman.'
By that night, Evee had read the wiki page about a million times over, unable to fall sleep until well past twelve. It still didn't make any sense, no matter how many times she read that damn page none of it made sense. Every single article on that subject said something different, a million different folk tails from many different cultures. Evee didn't know which to believe, or even how to believe any of it in the first place.
She hadn't slept well at all, fell asleep late and woke up early—a truly awful combination.
"Harbingers of death." She whispered to herself, letting out a sarcastic laugh at the words. "Well doesn't that sound fun."
Evee glanced to the clock, it was eight in the morning, Seth would be here to pick her up in a few hours, but she wished it was sooner. She wanted desperately to get out of that house, she needed time to process everything and she couldn't do it here.
Evee hesitated, wondering if it'd be rude or not to call him. She let out a shaky breath, pressing Seth's name in her contacts and letting the phone ring. It only rang once before he picked up, answering instantly with a chipper "hello!"
His voice immediately made Evee feel more at ease, a soft smile pressed against her lips. "Hey, so uh—whatchya doing right now?"
"Just some studying, why whatsup?" Seth questioned from the other side of the phone, excitement dancing along his tone.
"Oh I'm just really bored and don't have anything to do. ." She hoped he'd pick up the not so subtle hint.
"Want me to pick you up early?" He asked without hesitation, "I can be over in like an hour."
"Yeah, actually! That'd be great." Evee mused, turning toward her mirror and making a face at herself when she realized how much of a mess her hair was. "Okay see you then, bye!" She hurried, grabbing her shower stuff and B-lining it to the bathroom to get ready.
Evee showered in ten minutes, she rushed to get done so she would have time to pick out a nice outfit and put on some makeup. She wanted to make sure she looked put together, despite barely sleeping last night. Since it was rather warm that day she decided to wear a blue tank top and shorts. Evee was applying her final step to her routine—lipgloss—when she heard a knock on the door.
Evee smiled at the sound of his knock, ecstatic at his presence. She tightened the cap of her lipgloss back on, shoved it in her pocket, and excitedly ran out of her room and down the stairs and pushed open the front door. "Hey!" She greeted, closing the door behind her.
"Hi!" Seth beamed, wanting to reach out and give her a hug but not knowing if they were to that level yet. So instead of trying and it possibly failing he opted on the decision to just start talking, "so~whatchya wanna do today?" He questioned, "other than asking me more questions." He added with a soft smile.
Evee pursed her lips, following him as he began walking toward the same grey sedan Leah had been driving. She made the assumption that the two siblings must've shared a vehicle. "I don't know, up to you!" She hated giving him that answer but it was the truth, "I mean I know that's a sucky answer, it's just I don't really know about anything to do in Forks so~"
"Yeah uh—well there's not actually much, or well anything really—to do." Seth joked, but it was honestly not really a joke considering he was fairly accurate with that statement. "We can go over to Jake's, some of my buddies are hanging out there today."
"Sounds good to me!" Evee determined.
"Wait! Don't touch that door." Seth demanded, running in front of her so he could beat her to the car door and open it for her.
Evee let out a soft breath of laughter at his actions, gushing and squealing on the inside and definitely on the outside through the giant smile plastered across her face. He was so kind and polite, she absolutely adored it, and him. She sat down, watching as he jogged around and hopped into the drivers side.
"You're such a gentleman." Evee complimented, buckling up her seatbelt.
"It's all thanks to my mom, she made sure that I grew up with manors and stuff, it's super important to her." Seth smiled warmly in response to her words. He buckled up, and then jammed the keys into the ignition. "One time I forgot to say yes ma'am and just about lost my life."
Evee laughed at his words, "So, who all is going to be here?" She questioned, twirling a strand of her hair around her finger and glancing out the window.
"I think Quil, Embry, and then their girlfriends Maija and Johanna. River might show up too, I texted him but he's got a bad habit of looking at the text and then forgetting to respond, so I don't really know."
"Ah okay," Evee nodded, feeling a bit nervous. She had already met Quil, Embry, and River, but not Mejia or Johanna. Meeting new people made her nervous, always had and always would.
They drove for about fifteen minutes, talking about school, life, random little stories here and there, etc. Seth gave her a detailed explanation of how he phased, a long story that took up the majority of the fifteen minute drive.
The car halted a little too quickly to a stop, Seth's driving wasn't the most suburb some would argue—he thought it was just fine him personally—he hadn't wrecked or harmed anyone else, so it was fine right?
"Jeez Seth" Evee laughed at his abrupt stop.
"Oh it wasn't that bad." He argued, grinning over to her and jogging around to her side so he could open her car door for her.
"Thank you." Evee followed Seth toward the house, it was a small wooden cabin with narrow windows, the dull red paint making it resemble a tiny barn.
"This way, he's probably out back at his garage." Seth explained. Jacob's garage was located around the side of the house, hidden from view by a thick band of trees and shrubbery.
"Are we early? I don't see any other cars." Evee pointed out, a bit on edge. She was social when it came to people she knew, but meeting new people and getting to know them scared her.
"There's no really set time so it doesn't matter, but yeah we're the first ones here." Seth pushed open the door to Jacob's garage, the door let out a loud crackedy squeal at the hinges as it was pushed open, causing Jacob to look up and wave as they walked through the door.
"Yo whatsup!" Jacob smiled, standing up and setting the wrench in his hand down. He walked over to Seth and pulled him into a warm bro hug, he then turned him around, locking him into a head lock and ruffling Seth's hair with his knuckles.
Seth let out a grunt as he was pulled into the headlock, using his legs to lurch Jacob forward and onto the ground.
Evee backed up as the two rough housed for about a few minutes, the both let out rambunctious laughter and
"Don't worry you get used to it." A female's voice rang out from behind Evee. She jumped at the voice, startled at the sudden presence behind her.
Two girls that looked to be around her age stood behind her, one was tall and thin with tan skin, sharp features, and beautiful bouncy curls. The other girl had warm olive toned skin, a soft round face, and a wide mischievous grin.
"Well aren't you jumpy?" The girl with the mischievous grin noticed, a soft chuckle falling from her lips. "I'm Maija." She introduced, holding out her hand for Evee to shake.
Evee sheepishly shook her hand, an awkward expression spread across her face—she tried not to make it obvious but it was damn near impossible not to. "I'm Evee." She introduced.
Johanna noticed Evee's face, feeling sympathetic toward the girl. She was never awkward, but her friend Cassius was so she understood how the girl felt just from watching how Cassius's demeanor would change around new people. The bubbly boy would go from talkative to silent in a matter of minutes. "I'm Johanna, but you can call me Jo." She offered her a kind smile, and Evee immediately felt more at ease.
Seth noticed their presence and stopped messing around with Jake, walking over to the group of girls. "Where's Quil and Embry?"
"Bothering Billy." Maija breathed out in a sing song voice, waltzing over to the old couch and flopping down onto it. "Oh, and pizza's on the way, Quil's treat." She grinned, holding up his wallet and shaking it in the air.
"Niceeee." Jacob enthused, walking back over to the bike he had been working on before they got there.
"Come sit with us." Johanna gently grabbed Evee's arm and dragged her over to the couch to let her sit down between her and Maija.
"So, tell me about yourself." Maija sat up in her seat, wiggling her body toward Evee to show she was interested in whatever the girl had to say.
"Well I uh-" Evee didn't want to talk about herself, she used to argue it was because she found herself uninteresting—but now the reason was because she found herself to be too interesting. And she hadn't exactly had enough time to fully comprehend all of the insanity.
Saved by the bell—well more like Quil and Embry busting in. Embry carried two boxes of pizza, and Quil carried another two. "Four boxes?" Evee spoke up.
Seth grinned at her words, plopping down on the couch next to her. "We eat, a lot."
Quil walked over to the couch, opening the box for each of them to take a slice. "M'ladies? Oh and Seth, but you fall under that category too don't ya." He mischievously jeered.
Seth kicked his leg out at Quil, hitting him right in the gut.
"I can see that!" Evee laughed, reaching out and taking a slice. "Do you not have to worry about getting fat? Is that like a werewolf thing?" She asked innocently.
The entire garage erupted into laughter everyone looking to Evee with giant smiles on their faces. Her face flushed, she immediately felt embarrassed by her query.
Seth noticed her reddened face, so he took her hand in his own, squeezing it comfortingly. He leaned down toward her ear, his lips gently brisked against the top of her skin making Evee's entire body tingle with butterflies. "They're laughing with you not at you." He whispered comfortingly.
"Man this girl is great!" Embry enthused, leaning against the wall next to where Jake was working on the bike.
"Yeah Seth, you better keep her. Dont screw it up ya little shit." Jacob added, cranking a bolt into the bike.
"She's kind of got a point though, I mean ever since I phased this flab has slowly turned to abs." Quil smacked his belly, a grin was plastered across his face—it reminded Evee of a Cheshire Cat grin, Maija had that exact same grin—they were like the same person different font, that's what made Maija and Quil work so perfectly.
"Nah, it's still flabs." Maija teased wittily, hitting him gently with her foot. The two then started a game of footsies, Evee smiled softly at the interaction between the two.
"So. . What other supernatural beings are there?" Evee asked the group curiously.
Seth sneakily placed an arm over the head of the couch above Evee, earning a snicker from Embry and Jake across the garage.
"Well there's us and then there's the blood suckers." Jacob called out, a certain bitterness lacing his tone.
"Blood suckers?" Evee questioned, taking a bite of her pizza. She noticed Seth's not so smooth move, she liked the fact he was awkward and new at this whole—well whatever it was.
"Mhm," Embry mumbled through a mouthful of pizza, covering his mouth to be polite. He swallowed the bite, "More popularly known as vampires."
"Like Dracula?" Evee questioned, after the finished her pizza she gently leaned into Seth's side.
"Yeah but without the cape and giant castle." Johanna piped in.
"No, the Cullens definitely own capes." Quil joked, walking over to Jacob's mini fridge and pulling out a canned beer.
"Oh for sure!" Jacob laughed, holding up his hand, he didn't say a word yet Quil understood the action alone, tossing him the beer and then grabbing another for himself.
"And their house may as well be a castle." A unfamiliar voice to Evee made her turn toward the doorway, revealing a new girl who she had never met.
The girl had long, slightly wavy black hair, with lightened ends that turned into a soft honey brown that cascaded to the middle of her back, she had tanned skin, and a sharp jawline.
The girl confidently waltzed over to Jacob, leaning down and placing a kiss on his cheek before making her way toward the couch to introduce herself to Evee. "You must be the new girl, I'm Dakota, Maija's older cooler sister, oh and Jacob's girlfriend. It's nice to meet you!" After shaking Evee's hand she walked back over to Jacob, sitting down on the garage floor next to where he was working.
"Anyone know if River is coming?" Jacob asked the group.
"Nah, Sam caught him high the other night and now he's grounded for the next few weeks." Quil explained with a snicker.
The group of teens hung out for the majority of the day, talk about anything and everything. Evee found the most interesting subject to be the whole drama spiel Jacob shared about his love triangle between a human, himself, and a vampire. Evee was intrigued to meet this infamous Bella Swan he couldn't stop talking about.
Most of all Evee enjoyed the time with Seth. She couldn't call it a relationship, she had only known him for a short while, yet somehow she felt like they have known each other forever. It was more than a friendship, unknown to either of them if it was more—but she longed for it to be more. She knew that now, she had been sure from the beginning that she found him attractive, but now she knew—she wanted him, she longed for a relationship. Simply for more, more of him. Simply being around Seth made everything seem so much easier, so much simpler. Being with Seth was as easy as breathing for Evee, she had never been so sure about anything else in her life. And being here in this moment with him, made her confident in that feeling, because for once her mind was quiet.
