chapter eighteen: sleepover

"God, I loved it! I'll send you a copy. And bam bitch went down!" Tatum spoke as she sat up with her stuffed bunny, one she had gotten for Christmas from Adora when they were younger. "I'll send you a copy. Bam. Sid Super Bitch! You are so cool!" Tatum continued as she copied Sidney's exact moves from a few hours ago.

The three of them were sitting in Adora's bedroom, in which an extra bed was placed right next to her double, on which she and Tatum were sitting, while Sidney had taken place on the twin bed, as her father walked in with something in his hands.

"I thought you might want some ice for that right hook." Dewey smiled at Sidney as he threw the ice bag over to her with a proud smile on his face.

"Thanks." Sidney thanked him as she put the ice down on her hand.

"I'll be right next door. Try to get some sleep." Dewey spoke to his daughter and Sidney, who both tried to give him reassuring smiles that everything was fine, but that was a big fat lie. Nothing about these last days was fine.

"Do you really think Billy did it?" Tatum asked the two carefully and Sidney turned around, her back facing Adora and Tatum.

"He was there, Tatum." Sidney replied, sadly, still feeling betrayed at how her boyfriend was turning out to be the person who had attacked her and Adora.

"He was destined to have a flaw, I knew he was too perfect." Tatum spoke with a shake of his head, feeling pissed off at the Loomis for hurting her cousin and best friend like that.

A knock was heard from the door, making all three girls look up as Louisa Riley came walking in. "Telephone, honey." She spoke, looking from her daughter and grandaughter to Sidney."

"Who is it?" Tatum asked, curiously.

"It's for Sidney." The older woman replied, making Sidney turn around and sit up straight on the bed.

"My dad?" The Prescott girl asked, her voice filled with hope. After all that had happened tonight, she really felt the need to talk to her dad.

"I don't think so, honey." Mrs. Riley sadly smiled down on the girl, who's hopeful expression disappeared as soon as it had appeared. Nonetheless, Sidney stood up and walked passed Louisa to get to the phone.

"How are you doing, sweetheart?" The woman sat down on the bed next to her granddaughter.

"I'm fine." Adora smiled at her. Even after everything she went through, it still wasn't convincing the people who she needed to get convinced.

Mrs. Riley brushed Adora's hair behind her shoulder, but the girl fastly sat up when she heard Sidney's scream. It was almost like a reflex, but she and Tatum jumped up from the bed as quickly as they could and ran over to the phone.

"Poor Billy boyfriend. An innocent guy doesn't stand a chance with you." The voice who had called them hours before made its way through the phone, making the fear return back to her body.

"Leave me alone!" The Prescott yelled through the phone as Louisa went to get Dewey.

"Looks like you fingered the wrong guy again!" The voice continued.

"Who are you?" Sidney asked desperately, her eyes started to fill with tears.

"Hang up, Sid." Tatum and Adora whispered at the same time to their best friend, but Sidney wasn't listening to them.

"Don't worry. You'll find out soon enough. I promise. Say hello to your pretty best friend Adora for me." And with that the man hung up the phone.

Sidney speedily walked back into Adora's room, the two other teenage girls following after her.

"What did he say?" Adora asked, her voice shaking as she nervously awaited Sidney's answer.

"I think he's going to attack us again." Sidney spoke, the fear in her voice creeping over as she looked at Adora, who let out a sigh as she sat down on her bed, letting herself fall on her back.

There was a long, uncomfortable pause as each girl tried to find the right words. The fear in Sidney's voice was palpable, and Adora felt it deep in her bones. She couldn't just sit here and do nothing. Not when her friends were in danger. She took a slow breath, her mind racing for something, anything, that might bring them a small sense of normalcy.

"Hey, guys," Adora said, her voice quiet but steady. "We can't let this thing control us, right? We're gonna figure this out. We just need to take our minds off of it for a bit." She glanced around the room, her eyes landing on Sidney, who was still tense and on edge. "How about we watch something? Something light. Something... not about murder or horror. A comedy, maybe?"

Tatum immediately perked up, her face lighting up with an idea. "Wait, I know! Clueless is on TV tonight! It's not a crime-thriller, I promise," she added with a teasing grin. "We could just... relax for a while. Forget about all of this."

Sidney hesitated, looking back and forth between her two friends. It was hard to imagine feeling anything close to normal again, but the thought of sitting in the dark, constantly waiting for something bad to happen... it was exhausting. She let out a slow sigh and nodded. "Yeah, maybe you're right. We could all use a little distraction right now."

Adora gave her a reassuring smile and stood up, going over to the TV and turning it on.

As the opening credits of Clueless began to roll, the soft glow of the TV lit up the room. The tension in the air didn't fully dissipate, but for the first time that night, it felt like they could breathe a little easier. The familiar, lighthearted humor of the movie was a welcome change from the dark thoughts swirling in their minds.
