- TWO WEEKS LATER -
PETER fiddled with his pen as he looked down at Dr. Connors' algorithm whilst blowing a raspberry. He would constantly glance at his phone in hopes of a reply from Lillian along to his thousands of text messages filled with apologies. He then glances over Dr. Connors' book as his eyes narrowed, a thought coming into mind. "That's it." He mumbled to himself as he got up from his chair. He grabbed his jacket on his way out of his room.
He peeked out of his room, taking notice that aunt May wasn't home. He let out a sigh of relief, leaving the apartment to go to Dr. Connors' house. Closing the door after himself, he glanced at Lillian's apartment door as a pang of guilt washed over him. He continued walking out of the apartment complex building and went into an empty alley as he put on his web shooters. He looked around him to make sure no one was looking and shot out a web to start swinging.
Once he made his way near Dr. Connors' house that he found after doing some research on him, he jumped down to the ground and decided to walk the rest of the way. Reaching toward the doctor's house, his closed fist met with the door as he nervously knocked on it. "Dr. Connors, uh... you don't remember me. I uh-" Peter stated once the door opened.
"You're one of the students from the tour the other day." Connors finished Peter's sentence.
Peter nodded, "Uh, yeah... that's right." He chuckled nervously.
"What brings you here... Parker, is it?" Connors questioned with a raised eyebrow.
"Y-Yeah, actually-"
Dr. Connors moved aside for Peter, "Why don't you come inside," He motioned Peter to come in, "it looks like it going to rain." He said.
Peter entered the house, "O-Okay." He mumbled softly as Connors closed the door after him.
Connors walked into his kitchen, Peter slowly following suit. Peter took a seat on one of the stools as Connors grabbed two coffee cups whilst placing it on the counter. "Would you like some coffee?" Connors offered.
Peter shook his head politely, "No thanks, I'm good." He stated softly.
"Tea, then?" Connors offered once more earning another shake of Peter's head.
"No, it's alright." Peter smiled politely.
Connors nodded to himself as he went to grab one of the cups to put away only to knock the other one while doing so. Peter quickly catches the cup before it could fall to the floor and break into small pieces. Connors turned around to see Peter handing him the cup with a small tight lipped smile. "Good reflexes." Connors complimented as Peter mumbled a small 'thank you'. "I'll put this back up then." Connors laughed lightly as he put the other cup away as well.
"I read your book." Peter blurted out.
"You did?" Connors asked in surprise.
Peter nodded, "Y-Yeah. It really is something, I gotta tell you that." He chuckled lightly. "Do you really think it's possible? Y'know... the cross-species genetics?" He asked curiously.
Connors nodded his head confidently, "Yes, of course. For years this amazing scientist, Dr. Parker- I'm sure you've heard of him, and I were mocked for our theories. Not just in the community at large, but at OsCorp as well. They called us mad scientists." He reminisced as he let out a small chuckle. "Then Dr. Parker bred the spider and everything changed."
Peter smiled lightly, "He did that?" He asked, his voice dripping in astonishment.
Connors was astounded as he went down memory lane with Richard Parker, who he didn't realize was in fact Peter's father. "Why of course! The results were beyond encouraging. They- They were spectacular." He smiled widely as Peter smiled in awe just listening about his father. "We were gonna change the lives of millions, including my own." He pointed out as he shrugged. "Then it was over. He left... and he was gone. He took his research with him and-and without him, my research went into shambles."
Peter contemplated his next words as he fiddled with his thumbs. "S-Say it worked. Let's say you got it to work." He theorized before continuing, "How much would the foreign species take over? W-What would the side effects be?" He asked inquisitively.
Connors shook his head, "That's confidential, Parker. I shouldn't even be talking about my research with you."
"Would you say that the problem was the Decay Rate algorithm?" Peter questioned.
Connors' eyes narrowed at Peter in shock, nodding hesitantly. "Uh, yeah... How did you know?"
Peter shrugged, "Like I said, I read your book and I-I sort of figured out where you went wrong with your algorithm." He stated as he looked around him for a piece of paper and pen. Walking over to the blank piece of paper, "Um... May I?" He asked before picking up a pen.
Connors nodded, "Of course." He let out a breath of content as Peter began to write down the correct algorithm whilst passing it down once he was done. Connors looked over it, taken aback by Peter's knowledge. "Extraordinary Parker. How did- How would you like to see me at the tower one day after school.
Peter nodded happily, "Y-Yeah." He smiled.
...
SWINGING contentedly around New York to go back home, Peter noticed Lillian walking towards the central park. He subconsciously found himself making a b-line toward her. "Lills!" He called out as he swung toward her faster. "Lills, hey!" He called out once more. He panted as he tried to stop himself from crashing into her only to stumble into a tree, "Lills-oof!"
Lillian turned around, gasping as she finally noticed it was Peter who called out her name. "Oh my gosh, Peter! Are you okay?" She asked with her hand covering her mouth as she tried to muffle out her laughs.
Peter shook the pain away as he dusted himself off. "Y-Yeah." He chuckled softly as his eyes widened in realization. "Lills, you're not gonna believe this. Okay, so like the craziest thing just happened." He spoke rather quickly in excitement.
Lillian smiled at this as she thought how she missed little moments like these with Peter. "Peter, breathe." She laughed lightly.
Peter breathed out softly, "Right." He smiled at her. "I just helped Dr. Connors with his algorithm for his research a-and he invited me to OsCorp tower to help him finish his research." He finished with a huge smile.
Lillian's smile faltered as her arms crossed against her chest, "What?" She asked in complete utter shock as she shook her head at his words. "Peter, are you serious?" She asked coldly.
Peter looked at her in bewilderment, taken aback by her sudden response. "What's your problem?" He retorted defensively.
Lillian pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration as she figured this somewhat sweet moment was too good to be true. She scoffed as she let go of the bridge of her nose, looking at Peter with vexed eyes. "Do you not understand that he's just using you because your dad used to work with him, Peter?" She pointed out in aggravation.
"What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with my dad. Dr. Connors' new research does not even remotely relate with my dad." He said out of frustration.
"Seriously Peter? How oblivious and naive are you?" She retaliated as she shook her head in disappointment. "Do your research before you go and help a scientist who's only selfish to not only use your dad's research but recreate it and call it his own for only his own selfish needs. He's a bad guy, Peter. I keep telling you this, but you don't listen to me." She said honestly.
Peter scoffed softly as he shook his head, his glossy pained eyes meeting Lillian's fixed expressionless ones. "I-I thought you would be happy for me o-or support me on this."
"I guess all that changed once you blamed me for being delusional and being the initial reason why my dad left." She retaliated coldly.
Peter's face softened as a sharp pang of guilt hit his chest, "I-I didn't mean that." His voice broke slightly.
"Sure seemed like you meant it." She shrugged, choking on her words as she felt her tears slowly burn her eyes as they wanted to freely fall down her cheeks. "I honestly don't know what the hell I did wrong."
"You didn't do anything." Peter spoke softly as he gently placed his hand against her cheek whilst the pad of his thumb caressed it. "If anyone's to blame, it's me." He sighed as he tried to fight against his next words. Peter rested his forehead against hers as his breathing hitched nervously in his throat. "I... I think it's best if..." He pushed a strand of Lillian's hair behind her ear as his eyes shut tightly.
Lillian let out a small sigh, already knowing where this was going as she slightly pulled away from Peter. "If you're gonna break up with me Peter, please let me down slowly." She whispered as she pulled his hand away from her face. "I don't think I can take it anymore." She spoke softly referring to their last conversation they had before she left.
Peter let out a shaky sigh, holding her hands once more. "I'm sorry..." he squeezed her hands before letting go. "I-I don't deserve you." He spoke quietly as he slowly walked away from her. Lillian watched him leave as he gave her one last glance before turning around and leaving.
