SAN
"What is so important that you had to call me in two hours before work? If you want to fire me, just text me. At least I could've stayed at home then!"
San is too busy complaining his ass off from the second he walks through the door that he doesn't even look at Hongjoong who's been waiting for him. As always he carelessly throws his coat on a random chair and goes directly to look at himself in the mirror.
His eyes are red and tired as always, but thank God it's so dark at work that no one really notices. He lets his hands run through his dark hair and down his defined cheekbones, while wondering how someone with a face like this hasn't been able to accomplish more with his life yet.
"San." The tone coming from Hongjoong is far from impressed by San's arrival, but there's nothing new to that.
What was supposed to be a quick side-eyeing glare turns into a long stare instead, as San finally notices a stranger standing next to his boss.
"San, I'd like you to meet your new co-worker," Hongjoong introduces the new guy.
"Hello, I'm Kang Yeosang. Nice to meet you," a rather deep, but gentle voice slips through the lips of the younger man.
Yeosang just stands there, so casually but still looking like a freaking super model. The brown hair is falling over his face in soft curls, his jawline is sharp but he still has a certain cute look to him. But the most noticeable thing about him is his eyes. The most beautiful brown eyes, sending the most intense, soul piercing stare San's way.
"San," San replies with a quick shrug with his shoulders, pretending not to be bothered by the unexplainable shivers that are running down his spine when their eyes meet.
"So, San. You are going to be responsible for Yeosang during the first couple of weeks here," Hongjoong says, and it is not physically possible for San to roll his eyes any harder.
"What? Why me?" San whines, throwing his arms upwards.
"Because you need to learn how to take some responsibility around here." Hongjoong crosses his arms, his most used posture when talking to San.
"But... But I already have the Instagram thing!"
"And we all know how well that is going, right? Anyway. You can complain all you want. It's decided and I've already matches his schedule to yours, so stop acting like such an asshole and be nice to your new colleague."
✧
Ten minutes later San is standing behind one of the bars with this new Yeosang guy next to him. In his mind San is cursing Hongjoong to hell and back for setting him up to this. He absolutely hates having to deal with newbies.
Why can't he just be left alone and do his thing in peace?
"So, for an Old Fashioned you need to use sugar, rum and-" San is speaking fast and unenthusiastically, not even looking at Yeosang for one second, just wanting this to be over with already.
"I know how to make an Old Fashioned," Yeosang suddenly cuts in, "actually, I know how to make pretty much any cocktail. So you don't have to waste your, apparently, precious time on showing me that. San."
No newbie has ever talked back to him like that before, and San does his very best to hide how startled he got from the cold tone in Yeosang's voice. He still can't seem to hold eye-contact with the younger though, the wide-eyed gaze is making him feel all kinds of nervous.
"Well... If you know so much, why the fuck am I forced to be here?"
Yeosang just raises his shoulders briefly at the harsh tone in San's question, before pulling his navy blazer off and rolling the sleeves of his white shirt up. He then snatches the glass straight out of San's hand, with a stare that causes San to actually take a step backwards in surprise.
"I used to bartend when I lived in London," Yeosang explains, avoiding the question, while he starts mixing the cocktail.
"London? And for how long did you live there?" While side-eyeing what Yeosang is doing, San leans his back against the counter with his arms crossed in front of him.
"Eleven years. Moved there from Seoul when I was twelve and just moved back here last week." Yeosang mumbles, eyes fixed on glass as he stirs around, carefully adding the rum to the mixture.
"Oh. So that's why your pronunciation is so weird?"
"Weird? That's a rude thing to say," Yeosang frowns, with a quick glare in San's direction.
"Is it rude if it is true though?"
San has already lost interest in what is going on. He's made a thousand Old Fashioned himself anyway, so why should he care? Impatiently he just taps his fingertips against the wooden counter.
"Well, you're being an asshole right now. And since it's true, it's not a rude thing to say, right?" Yeosang tilts his head to the side, when sliding the finished cocktail towards San with an elegant move.
"It doesn't taste right!" San is quick to judge the finished result that Yeosang has given him.
"Yes, it does. I've made a million of those, and that's how it's supposed to be."
"I guess people in London have no taste buds. Or maybe they just lost them after tasting this abomination that you try to play off as one of the most classic cocktails in the world."
"You're an idiot!" Yeosang rolls annoyed his eyes, clearly knowing that San is just talking shit right now.
"Whatever. Okay, let me show you around then. Since you apparently are such a Mr. Know-it-all when it comes to the cocktails."
"So, did you just admit that I made the cocktail right?"
"Shut up."
✧
"And this is where we keep all of the cleaning supplies..." San carelessly gestures his hand towards the inside of the cabinet in front of them. He has shown Yeosang everything there is to see in the nightclub and backrooms as well, and now he is just trying to make time pass by as fast as possible before he ends up shooting himself.
"How many years have you worked here?" Yeosang suddenly asks.
"Are you even listening to what I am trying to teach you here?" San closes the cabinet and turns to face Yeosang, with a long sigh.
He is well aware that none of the things he has been showing for the last hour matter, but he has no intention of letting the newbie walk all over him. Yeosang needs to learn who is in charge around here, at least of the two of them.
"And what exactly are you teaching me?"
"Don't... What... Is that... how you talk to your elders?"
"Elders?" Yeosang raises a brow and just snorts. "And just how old are you, San?"
"Twenty-five."
"So, you're only two years older than me then?" Yeosang leans his shoulder casually against the wall, with no sign of intimidation showing on his face.
"I... That still makes me older!"
"You are old, alright. I show respect to those who show respect towards me. So maybe you should fix your own attitude before complaining about others'."
Feeling all flabbergasted by this newbie's attitude San finds himself in loss for words, which is a rare thing. And although he doesn't want to budge under Yeosang's soul burning stare he isn't sure how longer he can hold it. Yeosang on the other hand doesn't move at all, not one inch. He just stands there, with a look that causes an uneasy, unexplainable feeling to spread inside of San.
Even though it's hard for San to admit, he has definitely judged Yeosang too fast. The hope of being able to scare Yeosang away faster than he, himself, leaves after a one-night stand crumbles before his eyes.
No matter what San says, Yeosang seems to be ready with an unexpected comeback. He is most likely the most annoying person San has ever met, and that says a lot considering he already knows Park Seonghwa.
"Yo, Choi? You're early today? Are you alright?" the familiar voice of Hwang Hyunjin suddenly calls out from the door.
San sighs relieved by the sound of his friend's voice, and also finally getting an excuse to break free from Yeosang's penetrating stare.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Hongjoong just called in me early to tell me I'm stuck with this newbie for the next few weeks."
"Oh! Hi, nice to meet you! I'm Hwang Hyunjin!" Hyunjin introduces himself excitedly, smiling brightly at Yeosang.
As soon as Yeosang has introduced himself to Hyunjin as well, the two of them just start blabbering away. San rolls his eyes at them while slowly walking away. Not too far though, as he doesn't want to get in trouble with Hongjoong. He decides to just sit down on one of the tables in the club, a couple of steps away from the others.
While tapping around on his phone, he keeps glaring at Hyunjin and Yeosang. It's so typical of Hyunjin to always have to talk so much with strangers. Something that a lot of people love about him, so easy going and nice to everyone. But that thing exactly is what San hates most about his friend.
"I hope San has been nice to you," Hyunjin laughs, a little forced, before looking at San with a quick frown.
"He's been... Alright..." The smile on Yeosang's face is clearly strained but it's not like San cares anyway.
"Don't worry. It'll get better. He is actually a really good guy. He is just not... That good with new people," Hyunjin tires to assure Yeosang who is still looking rather skeptical.
"I'm not good with people in general, Hyunjin," San quickly adds, not looking up from his phone this time.
✧
"What the fuck? You are early tonight?" Seonghwa looks at San with great disbelief as they meet behind the bar.
San just shakes his head at his co-worker's amazing observation, but to his big surprise he doesn't find Seonghwa as annoying as he usually does. Maybe it's because there's someone new who's even more annoying. Only thing that's still a bit bothersome, is Seonghwa's heavy cologne that San might end up choking on, as usual.
"Ah, and who is the new guy?" Seonghwa asks and makes a move with his head in Yeosang's direction.
"Our new co-worker that I'm so freaking lucky to be stuck with..."
"Ha! Good luck to him then!" Seonghwa laughs before his facial expression changes into a more serious one. "He looks really handsome though. You're up for some competition!"
"Same goes for you then," San simply mumbles back.
"Please..." Seonghwa scoffs with a raised hand.
When Seonghwa turns around and walks to the other side of the bar to greet Yeosang, San rolls his eyes but can't help but steal a quick look at the newbie. Seonghwa might be right, for once... Yeosang is indeed good-looking, all the girls at the club are going to love him!
Too bad he is so annoying whenever he opens his mouth.
