➀ Fashion - 1

With the new year well on its way, new fashion trends have made its appearance known (just like your single-ness).

2023 is all about reviving some old trends. More specifically Y2K fashion.

It has been prominent since November. Low waist jeans and baby tees have been spotted on many celebrities. For those who follow Western media, Bella Hadid has been the face of it and for the k-popers, Newjeans has been at the forefront of reviving this trend with their debut.

(This basically says it all.)

Y2K fashion calls back to the biggest trends of the late 90s and early 2000s. It blends the pop culture of the millennium with bright colors and kitschy aesthetics to create an unapologetically maximalist look.

Given the boldness of the style, it’s easy to view it as a fashion disaster. But if done right and heeding the past, we gen-zs can definitely rock it by giving it our own twist (unless you are a disaster on your own).

Y2K essentials

Baggy jeans:

Ditching the skinny jeans of the 2010's, baggy jeans or wide leg jeans are the essentials these days. They are more practical and preferable over the miniskirts. A mistake of the millennials.

They are seriously so comfortable you could do a split in them.

Baby tees:

Midriff baring baby tees in bold colours were a must during the 00's. Though those have been replaced by crop tops which in my opinion blend with the retro and the chic minimal look of the past decade perfectly, you can always experiment. They are perfect to grab attention of a sugar daddy or mommy to get you out of debt.

Ribbed cardigans:

The button-up of every girl next door, the ribbed cardigan is form-fitting enough to be both mature and elegant.
Unlike denim or puffer jackets, ribbed cardigans will blend into your wardrobe. They’re the perfect addition to round off your simpler looks while staying reasonably tasteful and to make you look like you actually touch some grass.

Denim on denim:

I don't think denim on denim ever goes out of style. But Y2K fashion is a tad more conservative.

If you’ve got a hankering for double denim, then be sure to keep the color scheme consistent. Select a cropped jacket with wide-leg or high-waisted jeans. Round off the look with skinny sunglasses, dark boots, and a baguette bag.

Translucent clothing:

Translucent clothes are surprisingly versatile and don't require much accessories if you don't favour them. Styling them is pretty straight forward, baring as much as you want without actually baring anything. Pair bold colours with translucent material to catch all the attention. But let's not forget, not everyone is Bella Hadid.

Accessories:

Butterfly clips (which I remember with great pain and embarrassment), zigzag headbands, charm bracelets and necklaces, even friendship bracelets were all the rage in the early 2000's. You can give it your own jazz by including what we've learnt in the past decade. Bandanas and baguette bags are quite the essentials too. Overall though, Y2K is all about going over the board and bringing out your inner diva like Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

Colour of the month:

The colour most seen this month on the runway has been Cobalt Blue.
It's a great colour, suits everyone and really versatile to style, be it ethnic or trendy outfits. It's a colour that grabs attention but at the same time not as obnoxiously as any other colours like red and orange would. So, make a statement with blue this month.

Remember, fashion doesn't define you. You define the fashion. Wear what you are comfortable with and rock it with confidence unless you want to go out in heels just to spite your non existent ex. Be smart not petty.
