❝ Jess is a very real thing in a not-so-real world, and that's why I think people have such a problem accepting him. ❞

"CHARLOTTE GILMORE ALWAYS wears three rings."

Jess stood in front of the class, focusing on his paper and not the girl attentively watching him fold over the corner of his notes.

"One is an antique from her grandmother, it's silver and I don't think it's been anywhere but her right index finger since we met. One is from her mother, it's a flower band and it was a present for her sixteenth birthday. The last one is from Luke Danes, it's a compass and she twists it when she's nervous. Or when she's sad."

"Charlie always gets the same thing from Luke's," He glanced up briefly, making eye contact with his girl, "For breakfast, French toast and bacon, and the biggest cup of coffee she can find. I swear she was going to drink straight from the pot once." A few students chuckled at that, "For dinner, a burger with everything on it, side of fries and cherry coke."

"Her nose scrunches up when she lies," Jess scratched his ear before continuing, "She thinks other people's clothing are somehow more comfortable than her own and refuses to sit normally in her seat," The girl instantly brought her leg from its propped up position to the floor, ignoring Jess' small smirk, "Charlotte loves everyone in Stars Hollow," He watched as Liam and Emma's gazed drifted to the girl, "She'll never admit it, I still haven't figured that out."

"But, Charlie cares about everyone," He sighed, his posture slumping, "She remembered Emma's birthday and sent her the only original Led Zeppelin album she was missing. Dragged me two hours away to find it."

Emma's jaw went slack, the gift had been anonymous, and despite their slow reconciliation, the last person she expected it to be was Charlie.

"She makes a fresh batch of chili cheese fries every Friday because Liam comes in for them without fail," The boy looked down at his desk, fiddling with his fingers, "She plays her songs on the steps of Luke's diner because he wants to hear them but can't leave work. She reads books she doesn't like so she can talk to her sister about them, Charlie does everything for everyone and doesn't expect a thing in return, she doesn't even realize she does it."

Jess paused, licking his lips, "Charlotte Gilmore has a piece of all of us in her, she's funny like her mom, smart like her sister, she's charismatic like Emma, and she's a rebel," He couldn't help but smirk as he finished speaking, "Charlie is so carelessly herself, and that's only something she can be."

Their teacher lightly clapped for the boy, accepting his paper and stacking it in the pile. Jess shrugged, wandering back to his seat right behind Charlie.

  "You're up, Angel."

Charlie exhaled nervously, grabbing her paper and shuffling until she was stood in front of everyone.

"Jess is completely oblivious to the world around him." Stifled laughter rang out at her blunt statement, "By choice, obviously, he's smart enough to figure important things out, but he couldn't care less about what other people think of him or what the special is in the cafeteria."

"Jess Mariano never tried gyros, but now they're his favorite food." Jess smiled faintly, "His favorite color is blue and he won't watch any sport besides baseball. He doesn't like coffee, somehow, and prefers glazed donuts over any other kind. His favorite time of day is right as the sun is going down, before the real sunset, and he likes to sit at the last stool in Luke's. Exclusively."

"But that's stuff anyone could figure out," Charlie sighed, "The complicated situation I've been put in, is Jess likes the mystery he's built up and would hate it if I came up here and exposed all of his little quirks."

"So, he really likes classic rock and he sucks at poker even though he thinks he's amazing. Jess will always choose Coke over Pepsi and he refuses to watch a movie if someone's talking. He doesn't like sitting still and he's more selfless than anyone wants to admit."

"Jess is a very real thing in a not-so-real world, and that's why I think people have such a problem accepting him."

  "It was terrible."

"I liked it and that's all that matters," Jess smirked.

His hip bumped hers as they hurried down the steps of Stars Hollow High, his arm loosely resting around her shoulders.

  "I'm gonna get an F."

"Hey, no you won't," Jess tightened his arm around her only slightly, "It was amazing."

"I did exactly what she told us not to, all the basic stuff, no in-detail picture of you as a person."

"Never been too good with the rules, have you, Gilmore?"

Charlie rolled her eyes as they crossed the street to the diner, Jess held the door open for the girl and she happily waltzed in.

"What are you doing on Friday?"

"Friday Night Dinner and Rory wants to pick a movie for us to watch," Charlie grumbled, sighing at Jess's smirk, "It has absolutely nothing to do with you, okay? We got in an argument the other day and she hasn't apologized."

  "Have you?"

  "She started it!"

"Less talking more working," Luke flashed a sarcastic smile as he hurried past the duo, only then did Charlie realize how unreasonably busy Luke's was today.

"Sure you can't skip it?" Jess questioned as Charlie hurried behind the counter.

"If I could, I would," The girl sighed, "But these dinners are—"

"No, I know you can't skip the dinner, every Thursday I hear about it," Jess grinned at the girl's glare, "The sister thing."

"Probably could, probably should," Charlie mumbled, "But Rory thinks we're good because of her debate, and I can't deal with her incessant pestering if she thinks we aren't."

  "What was the fight about?"

Charlie shrunk down, pulling her arms around herself, and shrugging.

"It wasn't really an argument, she sort of just said something and I just. . . I dunno she's just annoying."

"Does she know she 'sort of said something'?"

  "Nope."

  Jess only nodded.

"If she cared to pay attention to my life instead of hers, she'd know what she said and why it made me upset."

  Jess nodded.

"Because it's really obvious, I guess, Emma noticed it and—"

Jess stared as the girl cut herself off, her posture straightening out.

  "Charls?"

"I have to go," She blurted, "Um, I told Emma I'd help her. . . with something. So I have to go. See you tomorrow!"

Jess watched the girl leave in a flurry, waving in a daze.

He thought right then perhaps he'd never understand the Gilmore girl.
