Chapter 23 - Flight or Fight?

"Doctor Whitewood, help!" Katrina called out through the flat-screen TV in the Cipriani's living room.

Wolfbloods growled around her as they began to transform. I stared at the screen in shock and awe, slack-jawed as it I stood by Matei and the others. The video ended with the Wolfbloods howling and Katrina fainting like a coward.

"Congratulations. For the first time in my long and distinguished career, I'm literally speechless," Imara told us, giving Jana and the others a disapproving look.

"Where-where was it?" T.J. asked her.

"YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram. Everywhere," Imara informed us and my eyes widened in fear at what this could mean.

"Oh my gosh..." I whispered.

Glancing over at my boyfriend, I could see he was terrified of what this could mean...for all of us.

"We thought we'd dealt with it," Jana breathed out shakily.

"You knew about this and you didn't tell me?" Imara asked her in an incredulous tone.

"This isn't Jana's fault!" I defended her and she hot me a grateful smile.

"We dragged Katrain to the wild. If anyone's responsible, it's us," T.J. interjected.

Hm. All of this must have transpired before I arrived at Stoney Bridge. Imara shook her head at her son.

"Go home, T.J. I've booked us a flight," she told him, "A car will collect you and take you to the airport,"

"Airport?" he repeated.

"I'll meet you once I've covered our tracks here,"

"But mum, you're Segolia. Why do we need to run?" he asked her in distress.

I glanced up at Matei, panic seeping into my system at high speed. Would we have to run too? As Imara and T.J. began to say their goodbyes, I turned to my boyfriend. It was there in his eyes - I could see it. The fear. Fear of what they'd do to the Wolfbloods once the secret was out...now that it WAS out, I corrected myself.

"Imara, Jana, T.J..." Matei interrupted then, pulling me to stand in front of him, "There's something you need to know first,"

Glancing up at Matei, he nodded and I took a deep breath before looking at them.

"I'm pregnant," I confessed, biting my lip afterwards.

Their eyes widened in shock but before they could say anything, Matei put a hand over my still-flat stomach protectively.

"And it's my cub," he told them, a proudness ringing clear in his voice.

"Your-? Your cub, Matei?!" Imara exploded, her amber wolf eyes coming out.

I backed up into Matei until I was flush against him and he held me tighter, letting out a protective growl.

"Yes, it's mine," he bit back.

"Part Wolfblood, part human?!" Imara spat, "That's an abomination of nature!"

Matei growled again, this time baring his fangs at her.

"That's enough, Imara!" Jana hissed, stopping the older Wolfblood from saying anything further.

Jana turned to us and I could see the worry and uncertainy in her gray eyes.

"There's never been a...mixed breed on record at Segolia," Imara sniffed.

Jana, ignoring the slur, nodded, "I've never heard of it in the Wild Pack either. Besides, now it's too dangerous for you to have the baby at Segolia,"

I felt my chest deflate of all the previous happiness Matei and I had shared once I told him the news. What was going to happen to my baby?

"Then what are we going to do?" I asked in a small voice, suddenly fearful as I rested my hand over Matei's.

He intertwined our fingers then in act of comfort and reassurance.

"They'll be after Jemma, won't they?" Jana asked Imara and she nodded sadly.

Ah so the woman DID have a heart, what a shocker, I thought with a roll of my eyes.

Jana glanced up at Matei again then, "She'll have to come with us,"

I squeezed Matei's hand as he came to stand beside me.

"Go now," Imara told us before hugging her son.

"Go check the coast is clear," Jana told Matei and he nodded, releasing my hand, "Okay?"

"I'll be back." he told me, pecking my cheek and I nodded as he left.
