Chapter 13 - So You're Not a Werewolf?
I could hear the faint sounds of a Melanie Martinez song playing as I entered the Kafe, the tiny silver bells jingling on the door. Glancing around the shop, I saw several people milling about - talking, laughing, eating. I sucked in a breath just then as cocoa-brown eyes met my own dark gaze. Slowly, I made my way over to the table in the back where he sat, waiting on me. He'd convinced me to come see him - to let him explain about last night. Honestly, he still scared me a bit. He was a wolf, after all.
He could kill me if he wanted to. Not that he seemed like he wanted to and who I was kidding, I was over-reacting and I knew it. But still, that twinge of fear nagged at me inside, making me be wary of him. Even if I did still get butterflies by just being around him. I mumbled a slight greeting as I slid into the chair across from him, cool air from the A/C blowing against the nape of my neck. Brown orbs bored into mine and I squirmed uncomfortably.
"So..." I started awkwardly, trailing off slightly before resuming, "You're a werewolf then?"
"Wolfblood," he corrected me, that deep voice of his giving me chills like it always did.
"Right...that..." I said, trailing off again.
Just then Animal by Neon Trees came on and I rolled my eyes at the irony of it all. My honey-brown orbs met his then and I bit my lip.
"I never got to explain last night. There wasn't time to... but I want to now," he told me, his expression hopeful that I'd listen to him.
I nodded in understanding, pushing a strand of hair behind my ear. He took a deep breath before continuing.
"What do you want to know first?" he asked me.
"How many of there are you?" I pressed him.
He shifted uncomfortably in his seat before his eyes connected to mine, "Me, my sister...and...Jana, T.J., and Selina. They're my pack,"
My dark brown eyes widened and I swallowed a lump that had begun to form in my throat.
"Them too?" I breathed, taking it all in and he nodded.
For a moment, I said nothing but then resumed my questions.
"Did you get bit? Is that how you..." I asked, trailing off and hoping he'd get the hint.
"Turn into a wolf?" he asked, arching an eyebrow and I nodded.
He shook his head, "No. You're not bitten. You're either born a Wolfblood or you're not,"
"Wolfsbane?" I questioned him.
He was silent a moment but finally answered.
"It weakens me if it gets in my system," he replied.
"What else weakens you?"
He fidgeted nervously with the sleeve of the dark coat he always wore.
"Fire. Even going near it, I...I can't stand it..."
I frowned, trying to think of everything I knew about wolves. But then again...were they the same thing as Wolfbloods? Or were there differences?
"So you're essentially a wolf then?" I asked hesitantly and this time, he laughed and shook his head.
"Not exactly. The human side is as much a part of me as the wolf... I'm both," he said, shrugging.
I smiled slightly, "Like how I'm biracial? Both races are a part of me... Is that what you mean?"
He smiled and nodded, "Yeah, something like that,"
"Well, what about smell? Wolves are good at sniffing things out," I asked him, tilting slightly forward on my elbows.
"That's the same as wolves, actually. I can smell different scents that most humans can't. Even ones that have dissipated days before. I can still get a scent on it," he answered, his eyes brightening at my interest.
A thought occurred to me suddenly and I felt my mouth go dry.
"You don't...um...you know...kill...people, do you?" I asked, eyeing him warily.
A low growl emitted from his throat then and I instinctively, leaned away from him. But before I could bolt entirely, his hand came to rest over mine on the table and I relaxed a bit.
"I...I'm sorry for that. I just...," he started but trailed off before gazing into my eyes intently, "I would never ever kill anyone. Not ever..."
I nodded, loving the feel of his hand, so warm, on my own. His fingers caressed the back of my hand tenderly and I bit my lip.
"I'm sorry for asking," I said softly and a smile tugged at his lips.
"Don't apologize. You're involved now - it's your right to know these things about me," he told me gently.
I smiled back at him and the fears I'd had the night before melted away. Maybe...maybe dating a Wolfblood wouldn't be so bad after all. But all of those warm fuzzy feelings left me once the next words left his lips.
"But it's time for you to officially meet Jana, Katrina, T.J., and Selina now."
