Prologue

"Ne, Keigo, why are you friends with me?" a small girl sat beside a small boy on the edge of a bridge, their short legs dangling off the edge. The light reached the water, and exploded into  a million colors. Red, orange, yellow and purple mixed together into a beautiful glittering mass.

The fading sunlight outlined two children; and the wings that sprouted from their backs. One was a bright vermillion that was soft, another a dark black that scared people away from the young girl.

One boy, with a bright and cheery exterior, another, a girl, with a dark aura surrounding her.

Polar opposites, yet they stuck to each other.

"Huh? You're awesome, that's why!" the boy replied, and grinned at her. The girl's [e/c] orbs slid his way, and she let out a breath.

"Am I really?" she asked, propping her chin up with her hand, and then looked over at the boy once more as she heard him reply.

"Of course you are! You're the bestest person I've ever met!" he declared, raising a fist into the air and smiling at her hunched form once more. A small smile danced on the young girl's lips, before her face broke out into a smile.

"Even though I'm sure 'bestest' is not a word," she began. Leaning back, the young girl looked out at the horizon. "Thank you."

The boy's grin widened even further, and the young girl smile at his happiness.

You're eight, her parents and family always scolded. You shouldn't be this gloomy.

She didn't know why she was this way, she just was.

"[n/n], [n/n]!" looking over at her winged friend, the young girl took her sweet time replying.

"Yeah, Keigo?" he looked out at the river, draping an arm over the young girl's shoulders. She raised a brow in confusion, and he grinned at her.

"When we grow up, let's become heroes together!" she girl smiled for real this time, and looked out at the river with him. "We can fly into battles and save people, together!"

"Yeah."

"Speaking of flying!" the boy hollered, jumping to his feet. The girl stood up too, brushing off any remains of dust from her yellow dress.

"What is it, Keigo?" questioned the girl, and the boy flashed a grin a her once more.

The girl could've sworn there were sparkles that shone off it and stabbed her.

"Let's go flying together!" he cheered, and the girl broke out into laughter. This startled the boy, but he quickly adapted and laughed along with her, their merry laughter ringing out.

"Sure, I don't see why not," she spoke, and stretched her leathery wings out. "But is it safe?" the boy's grin widened, and she girl couldn't help but feel that his happiness was contagious.

"It'll be alright!" said the boy, before unfolding his crimson wings and flapping off. "We'll go together!"

"We'll get into trouble later, but that's fine," muttered the girl, before taking off. A smile found its way across her lips, and soon, she found herself swooping and soaring next the the boy.

"Hey, [n/n]!" the boy yelled at the girl, and she looked over at him. "Let's do this more often!" the girl nodded, before flying a little lower. The boy followed, and soon, they were flying side by side, the wind whipping their hair around their faces.

The pair kept pace next to each other, and they would do the same for many years to come.

"Let's fly together, [y/n]! No matter where we go, we'll always fly next to each other!"

"Always?"

"Always!"

"You promise?"

"Yeah!"

There, that night, with the setting sun, two children made an unbreakable promise to each other.

Or so they thought.
