Chapter Thirteen: Training Day
Clint managed to convince Kit to return to the tower, reassuring her that she would be welcomed into the group sooner rather than later. She didn't believe him though, knowing there was no reason for the others to welcome her with open arms. Kit would never admit it out loud, especially in front of the others, but she was feeling extremely insecure in her new settings. On the street, no one knew her, not even Rob and he had been around her the longest. And she liked to keep it that way because it was easier on her.
On the street, she had the ball in her court. She was anonymous, meaning no one could use information against her. Being among the Avengers, Kit felt like she was completely out of her league. They had super abilities, enhanced skills, and from what she had noticed, they were incredibly smart. Any look into her past, Kit knew that they would see that she didn't have much of an education outside her training with O'Malley.
The only way she could stay ahead of the game was to constantly deflect and distract. If someone turned the attention on her, she turned it right back on them. Maybe it was enough to deem her annoying, but she didn't care, it left her feeling secure and that was what mattered.
But as she returned to the tower with Clint, Kit felt incredibly small upon entering. She felt like a child being escorted home after being caught outside after curfew. However, to her good fortune, upon her entrance, she only had to face Bruce. To her surprise, Bruce seemed more relieved than upset that she had been found. He greeted her and invited Kit to sit down and enjoy some breakfast.
With a small smile, Kit sat down and helped herself to some eggs and toast. It remained just the two men in her company, allowing her to relax. But the moment of peace quickly came to an end when she heard the door open down the way and seconds later, Natasha appeared.
Immediately, Kit swallowed the food in her mouth and placed on a smile, one that Natasha did not return.
Kit knew damn well she was playing with fire when it came to irritating Natasha, but at the same time, she couldn't help herself.
"Good morning, beautiful," she greeted Natasha, although the air remained icy. " You know, I don't how you manage to stay angry for so long. Why not start the day fresh? I don't even know why you're upset with me, I technically didn't take anything from you...except maybe some pride."
Natasha was not in the humorous mood that morning, simply because they had been up most of the evening trying to track down Kit's whereabouts. Fury didn't like loose ends and there was a bit of an alarmed raised as Kit disappeared into the night. However, she raised a brow in Kit's direction willing to humour the train of thought.
"Pride? Is that what you think you took from me?"
"Well, you seemed pretty pissed off when I was able to escape you, " Kit shrugged.
"You're mistaking luck for skill," Natasha told her, " you managed to get away, but if you don't recall, I ended up catching you."
"Catching me? You mean with your handcuffs because that worked out so well. I remember volunteering to go with you two."
As the two went back and forth, Bruce and Clint exchanged looks with one another. Bruce seemed to hint at the idea of interjecting so that the two would stop arguing but Clint shook his head as a warning. It was best to just let them get it all out, besides, he was really enjoying his bowl of cereal along with his coffee.
"You just have a comment for everything, " Natasha said, keeping her own smirk prominent in order to make it seem like Kit wasn't bothering her, " don't you?"
"If it calls for it," Kit answered, " I mean, I was just trying to mend ways here, Red, but you need to give me a chance."
"I won't even consider it if you keep calling Red, don't call me that."
"So would you prefer Weasley-"
Kit stopped as soon as she received a deadly glare from Natasha. She sighed and turned back to her food, mumbling something about how it was honourable to be called a Weasley and that Natasha needed to read up on the Harry Potter series to find her appreciation for the fictional family.
"I didn't come here for small talk-"
"Well, that's a relief," Kit grumbled, " because if this is your idea of small talk, you're terrible at it."
"I'm actually here because you're to report to a training session."
Finally, Natasha's delivery was enough to silence the comeback queen for a few moments. She looked as though she was about to argue or try to talk her way out of it, but Natasha didn't give her the chance.
"Fury's orders."
She watched as Kit looked in the direction of Clint or Bruce for some assistance, but they quickly averted their attention elsewhere, offering no help. Her obvious frustration got the best of her and it seemed she was the one swallowing her pride at the time when she looked over in Natasha's direction again.
"Can I, at least, finish my breakfast here? It's the most important meal of the day."
"You have five minutes."
Part of Kit definitely wished that she hadn't agreed to return to the tower because as she stood beside Natasha, she was starting to feel her nerves get the best of her. She was out of her element again, there weren't any alleyways for her to escape and she knew she was going to be at a disadvantage. And the more confidence that Natasha exuberated, Kit found herself wanting to run. She was chewing at her fingernails intensely, waiting for someone to explain what the training would consist of.
Of course, they had to wait until Fury made his appearance and when he finally arrived, Kit hoped that she could talk her way out of the situation.
"Dean," Fury began right away, not giving her a chance to speak, " I scheduled this session in order to see what you're capable of. We need to see what your strengths are. You cannot solely rely on escaping a situation."
"Why not?"
"Because there might not be a way out in the future."
Kit scoffed and folded her arms across her chest. " There is always a way out, if there isn't, then you're just not trying hard enough."
"Well, we're going to have to agree to disagree," Fury said, " but I want to see how you would handle an attack."
"Um, do you mean like fighting? Wh-who am I going to fight?"
Immediately, her eyes travelled over to where Natasha was standing, the small smile on her face becoming more evident as Kit realised what was about to take place. But to add onto everything else, other people entered the small arena, lining up and none of them were smiling as they looked in Kit's direction.
"The agents gathered here are going to attack you on my command."
"This seems highly unfair."
"Don't worry, Kit," Natasha called out to her, " we'll take it easy on you. It won't hurt...much."
At the last second, before Fury gave the command for his attack dogs to jump her ass, Kit requested a moment to stretch. It seemed like a bizarre request, judging by the looks she was getting as she reached down to touch her toes. The other agents, including Natasha, were waiting, watching her like she was fresh prey. She blocked them out for a moment, scanning the rest of the arena, hoping to find some sort of escape route.
Fury wanted her to handle an attack but Kit was not a fighter.
Finally, it was time as Fury gave the cue and just as his hand dropped, Kit suddenly screamed, catching the others off guard. She pointed in the direction of the ceiling and backed away.
"Oh shit! I think a pipe just burst in here!"
Of course, it was one of the oldest tricks in the book and the other agents shouldn't have fallen for it. But that was the whole point, the agents and Natasha were so used to dealing with extremely calculated individuals. They went in attempting to expect the unexpected move, rather than the obvious move and that was one strength for Kit.
And with her newest distraction, Kit took off in the opposite direction, putting as much distance between herself and the others. But Natasha was the first to pick up on the trick and turned around to catch Kit running away. However, luck was in Kit's favour at the time, as she had enough time to scale the railings and make her way up.
Natasha was completely stunned for a moment as she came to stand under where Kit was hanging from the ceiling.
"Wh...What are you doing? You're not supposed to run, you're supposed to fight!"
"No, thank you!" Kit called back down to her as she squeezed her arms around the pipe. "I'm a lover, not a fighter!"
"Get down from there!"
"No!"
Natasha couldn't believe she was having such a conversation. "If you don't get down from there right now, I'm going to drag you down, do you understand?"
"Good luck with that, Weasley!"
Not one to deliver empty threats, Natasha started to climb, truly willing to drag Kit back down.
Meanwhile, as Natasha did all the work, Bruce and Clint had tagged along to watch the session for entertainment purposes. And shortly after, Steve arrived after being called to observe. As he walked in and saw Kit holding onto some piping with Natasha demanding her to come down, Steve was left speechless for a moment. He still didn't understand Fury's idea of bringing Kit into the mix.
So far, it seemed they were just dealing with a street thief with an attitude. Fury normally always had a calculated reason behind his decisions, so he had to wonder what the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. was seeing.
"She moves incredibly fast," Fury said as he entered the viewing area with the rest of them. "Almost too fast. It could be a fluke..."
All the men turned to him as his voice carried off for a moment. It could have been a fluke but there was a "but" waiting in the shadows.
"We're going to run a blood test on her," he said, " Dr Banner, you can oversee it."
"That's not exactly my expert-"
"See if you can find anything."
As Fury went to leave, Steve followed him out, stopping him in the small corridor for a second. "Is it safe to assume that you think she has something? The blood tests...you think she has some abilities?"
"I can't be sure," Fury said, " but I saw the way she climbed at that speed, that wasn't normal. She didn't even need that distraction to get away from the group down there, she would have had a clear lead as soon as she turned."
"That doesn't necessarily mean it's an ability though, she could just be very fast and agile. Some good training could go a long way."
"It could be training or it could be something else that's helping her out, " Fury said, " I guess we'll see."
