Chapter Five: A Little Game of Cat, Bird, and Spider.

It was Friday and what a delightful day it was for Kit, simply because it was her favourite day of the week. Not due to the fact that it led into the weekend, but mostly because Friday meant Payday for the masses. She could compare it to the lottery with plenty of people walking around with cash in their pockets as they prepared for a fun weekend. And if she wasn't successful, Kit could get ahold of enough to last her a solid week or more.

Of course, she was still riding the high of her Rolex sale, but there was the strong compulsion to continue taking whatever she could. Part of her felt that little hint of guilt, taking money from those that had worked all week for it, but she always hoped she did her job of scanning the crowds, taking from those that wouldn't mind missing some money here and there from those that were actually in need of it.

Unfortunately, after an eventful week, Kit found herself feeling a little tired, giving into a cat nap during the day that was only meant to last thirty minutes but turned into a few hours. She didn't wake until the evening hours, long after the majority had gotten off of work and were probably either home or spending their money somewhere else.

Most people would have taken the loss for the evening or counted it as Karma delivering a well-deserved warning to knock it off, but Kit only found herself irritated at the idea of having to work a little extra harder for her prize. Some days she enjoyed her challenges, others, she wanted it to be as simple as taking candy from a baby. But beggars couldn't be choosers and stealers didn't have a say in shit.

Slipping into the darkness after leaving her apartment, Kit wasn't looking for a challenge that evening, but she certainly was going to get one.

Due to the cold weather settling in, there weren't many options when it came to people Kit could choose from. Immediately, it put a further damper on her mood as she swore under her breath and kicked at the pavement. Most people were inside, leaving the pickings even slimmer and all she wanted to do was scream.

"I guess I could go inside," she said, glancing in the direction of one of the bars she passed, " ugh, I don't feel like it though."

There was a long and internal debate that went on for a few minutes and eventually, Kit decided it was probably in her best interest to just call it a night and head back home. As much as she wanted to get her hands on something new, it was her own fault for blowing her chances.

"Tomorrow is a new day," Kit told herself, " I can get started in the morning."

With the promise to get an early start, Kit decided to burn off her restless behaviour by going for a run. However, she had only made her way down the sidewalk just a bit when she spotted two people making their way towards her. A man and a woman walking side by side, their heads turned slightly to each other as they spoke about something.

Just leave it, Kit, her mind urged her to keep moving, you already agreed to leave it until the morning.

However, as the fourth finger on her right hand twitched, it was already clear that she had changed her mind. It was such an easy scenario, a quick bump and snatch. All she had to do was bump into either one of them and take whatever she wanted during her little apology.

No matter how much her subconscious was warning her to keep on moving, Kit couldn't resist as she kept her direction to walk right in between them. She removed her hands from her pockets, keeping them down at her side as she lowered her head. It was best to pretend that she wasn't paying attention to where she was going. And just as she planned, Kit walked right down the middle, knocking into both of them before her head jerked up.

"I'm so sorry!" a small voice replaced her own. "I didn't mean it!"

Natasha had enough of listening to Tony whine about his watch and the bickering of Steve encouraging him to buy a new one. She decided to abandon the Stark Tower, taking Clint with her to go for a walk. For a Friday night in the city, it was rather quiet, but she knew she could blame that on the cold. Part of her was attempting to keep a relaxed air about it, after all, it wasn't like they were on a mission, she was supposed to be enjoying herself. But it was difficult to put her guard down and Clint found that to be obvious, especially as he started laughing.

"What's so funny?" she questioned, raising a brow in his direction.

Clint quickly ended his laughter, although a small snort escaped from him. "It's nothing, it's just that you look so uncomfortable trying to look relaxed. You don't have to work so hard...I'm pretty sure that everyone we keep passing feels like you're going to kick their ass."

"I can't help it, this is my face! Besides, I have to keep my acting for when it matters-"

Suddenly, their conversation was interrupted when someone came crashing down the middle of them. Natasha staggered off to the side, feeling her senses heighten as she went into defence mode. However, just as she went to snap in the direction of whoever decided to crash into them, they were met with an apology.

A woman took a step back from them, her hands shoved into her pockets and one of her earpieces from her earphones dangling at her chest. It was clear that she hadn't been paying attention as she had been stuck in her own little world. And all Natasha could remember at the time was Clint's words of not being so defensive.

"It's okay," Natasha responded first to the apology, " no harm was done. You're fine."

"Well, thank you. And if you don't mind me saying, so are you," the woman replied with a grin that caught Natasha off guard and Clint's laughter started up again. "And are you okay there, handsome?"

Clint gave a shrug of his shoulders to hide his own blush from forming. "I'm good, no worries."

Natasha was still in shock with the act of flirting and Clint had nothing else to say as he was caught up in smiles, leaving the woman to give a nod of her head before she wished them a good rest of their night and headed off.

When Natasha finally snapped out of it, she glanced over at Clint to see him peering over his shoulder, watching as the woman walked away. She crossed her arms and gave him a look as they stood in place. She tapped her foot against the sidewalk until he looked back at her.

"What? Why are you looking at me like that?"

She said nothing, merely shaking her head at him as she started walking again.

"Oh come on! Like you weren't looking?" Clint attempted to defend himself, as he shoved his hands into his pockets. However, as he went to follow Natasha, he quickly came to a halt as he felt the emptiness of his pockets. "Whoa, that's not right."

"What? You checking out her ass or accusing me of checking out her ass?"

"No, no, none of that," Clint said with his own shake of his head, " my wallet, it's gone!"

"Did you leave it back at the tower? I told you to make sure you had it on you!"

Natasha had been missing the point that Clint was trying to make because up until the moment where they had been knocked into, he could feel his wallet in his pocket. But since then as he took a quick look at the ground, he was pretty sure that it wasn't just a coincidence. It finally seemed to click with her too as they both took to looking down the sidewalk where the woman was just about to round the corner.

At the same exact moment, she looked over her shoulder in the direction of the two, a smile on her face before she disappeared.

Kit couldn't help but sigh as she hadn't been in the mood for a chase. But it was her own impulsiveness that had gotten her into trouble and if they wanted to play, she simply couldn't refuse. Besides, she had been looking to go on a run anyways, might as well make it a bit interesting.

Standing around the corner, Kit waited until the others put two and two together. She heard one of them yell out that she had taken his wallet, and moments later they were rounding the corner. She couldn't help the smile that dawned on her lips as she witnessed them looking all too surprised to find her still standing there.

"Hey, you took my wallet," the man said, "what gives?"

Kit didn't want to come across as an ass, but what part of her stealing his wallet did he not understand?

"Wallet?" she repeated in feigned confusion. "What wallet? Oh, wait, you mean, this wallet?"

Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out the stolen item and tossed it back to him. Of course, seconds later he had it opened it up, looking to see that his money was indeed gone. She had to bite down on her tongue to keep her from laughing at his expression.

"Give me back my money!"

"Sorry," Kit said, " I don't know what you're talking about."

Suddenly, the red-haired woman stepped forward, looking as though she was trying to keep her temper. "Give him back his money and we can pretend that this never happened. If not, we'll have to take it from you by force."

There was a loud snort from Kit before she prepared herself. "You can try," she replied before she took off.

She had the element of surprise on her surprise as she got the lead on them, but it didn't last for long because as she took a look over her shoulder, she saw that they were right behind her. Her eyes widened as she didn't anticipate them keeping pace with her.

"Alright, change of plans."

Clint and Natasha finally came to a halt before an alleyway, where they had seen the woman turn into. However, as they looked down the darkened path, they could see that it was a dead end but there was no sign of her.

"Where did she-" Natasha began before she instinctively looked up and caught sight of the woman standing at the top of the building's fire escape. And just as she was spotted, the woman gave them a wave of her hand.

Clint didn't seem so bothered, only stuck in slight awe for a moment. "How did she get up there so fast?" he questioned. "We were right behind her."

"Doesn't matter," Natasha said with a low growl, " let's get her. She's starting to piss me off."

"Oh, does that mean that the honeymoon phase is over?" Clint asked. "And here I thought you two were such a cute coup-"

Before he could finish, Clint was knocked in the chest by Natasha, leaving him short of breath. There wasn't a chance to say anything else as she led the way to go after the woman, who seemed to be taunting them from the rooftop. Clint followed her up and when they reached the top, only to see the woman waiting for them on the other side.

"I thought you two were going to be faster than that," she called out to them, " you had me going there for a second. I thought this was going to be a challenge."

"Look," Natasha snapped, " this is going to end badly for you! Just give us back the money."

"Aw, giving up so easily? I have to admit, I'm disappointed."

Clint was about to intervene, however, as he took one step forward, the woman's reaction was to jump off the roof. Immediately, they were sent into a panic as they raced to the edge, expecting only to see the splattered remains of the woman. However, they were blessed to see the ending of her holding onto the end of a pipe and sliding the rest of the way down to the ground.

The way she landed on her feet was beyond graceful, almost cat-like.

When she reached the bottom, she peered up at the two. "Well, I imagined this to be a lot more fun, but I guess not! Thanks for the cash!"

Natasha was not one to give up so easily though. "Oh hell no! She is not getting away with this."

But it didn't matter how quickly they reached the ground because as soon as they made it, the stranger was long gone and so was Clint's money.

With his wallet in one hand, Clint used his other to scratch the back of his head, looking completely lost.

"What just happened?"
