Chapter Eleven: Adventures in Babysitting
Kit would be the first to admit that her new bedroom spoke of luxury, even if it was simple in terms of decorations. The mattress itself was comfortable enough that she could have sprawled out on it and never gotten up again. However, she wasn't sure just how permanent her stay was going to be, after all, the others didn't take to her right away.
She wasn't expecting a warm homecoming by any means, considering they were all practically strangers ( and she had stolen something from the majority of them) but she didn't expect to be so frowned upon. Of course, Fury left her with the parting words that she just had to give it time. Suddenly, she felt like she was in a movie that portrayed a stereotypical high school experience.
Somehow, she had landed the role of the new girl and she had to make her way into the popular group. She wondered if the Avengers had the policy to wear pink on Wednesdays, it felt like something Tony would implement to the group over time. The thought of them all dressed in pink spandex, including Bruce and Steve managed to bring a small smile to her face as she sat on the bed.
At the very least, she figured she could get a good night's rest and pretend that was staying in a hotel room. She even had her own personal coffee maker and a small television. However, just as she had plans to settle in, she heard the ominous sound of her stomach growling.
Suddenly, Kit was full regret of not eating more that morning.
Since Fury's departure, she hadn't been given any specifics about what she was supposed to do. He told her once she was settled that she would begin her training, whatever that entailed. He hadn't told her that she wasn't allowed to leave the building and she was sure that the Avengers were not going to be welcoming her to a sit-down dinner.
There wouldn't really be an issue if she just happened to leave to get something to eat, would there?
Slipping out of the room, Kit glanced up and down the hall to make sure the coast was clear. Suddenly, she was the high schooler, trying to sneak out of the household at night. It felt ridiculous compared to what she was used to. From a young age, she had been able to walk in and out of the home without so much as someone looking in her direction, let alone question her.
She was just about to travel the rest of the way when she was stopped by the sound of someone clearing their throat. Quickly, she straightened her posture and turned around to see Clint coming out of one of the back rooms, eyeing her in curiosity.
"Going somewhere?"
"Oh no, I'm just sleepwalking," she answered flatly, "if you would excuse me-"
"Nice try," he replied, "what are you really doing? Looking for stuff to steal during your stay?"
Kit folded her arms over her chest, rolling her eyes in the process. "Wow, couldn't go a full minute without throwing out an accusation. Nice."
"Well, you'll have to forgive me, I'm only going off our past history, you see?"
"And if I were to know of your history, what could I throw back in your face? Would I look so kindly upon you?" she countered defensively.
She couldn't help the little flicker of satisfaction that ignited in her chest as he remained quiet for a minute or so. Apparently, the team of heroes had quite the closet of skeletons that they were attempting to hide or at least forget about.
"Look, if you must know," she said after an awkward moment, " I'm hungry, so I just wanted to go out and get some food. Is that a crime around here?"
"No," Clint shook his head, " but you could have just said that instead of your 'sleepwalking' excuse."
"Let's be honest, would you have believed me even if I started off with the truth," Kit countered, " you guys made it clear that you don't like me. Last time I checked, if you don't like someone, you find it difficult to believe them. Or at least, you go out of your way not to believe them in my experience."
All Clint wanted to do that evening, was return to his apartment and go to sleep, but the rest of the group had come to the conclusion that they were better off staying together while Kit was among them. Fury had left them with the suggestion, more like a warning, that they had to at least put some effort into working Kit into the group. It didn't seem like a completely fair request among the adults, especially since the wounds were a little fresh among a couple of them.
However, they had all come together before under odd circumstances, it didn't seem like such a far-fetched idea to Clint.
It just sounded like a lot of work.
"I don't think it's fair to say we dislike you," he began, digging his knuckle in his ear for a second, " I think it's a matter that we don't know you. We didn't get off on the right foot, so some of us are feeling a little defensive about that-"
"You mean, like your girlfriend?"
With a loud snort, Clint shook his head. " Nat? Nat isn't my girlfriend, she's my partner. She looks after me, I look after her, but it's not romantic. And she has a very protective nature when it comes to those she cares about, so when I said you didn't get off on the right foot, let's say that you stepped on hers in the process."
"Well, damn, because out of all of you, I wanted to get along with her the most."
"She can warm up to you, you just have to give it time. Granted, if you're not being sarcastic right now."
Kit sighed. "I'm not, I think I just naturally sound that way and I can't really change that overnight. Not that I want to change myself, I like who I am."
"Really? That what was that speech you gave us earlier about Fury giving you the chance to redeem yourself?"
Kit's stomach growled once more as if it was telling her to ditch Clint as fast as she could so she could feed herself. She wished she had just been faster on her feet before to avoid the interrogation that was going on in the hallway. If they kept it up, she was sure that others were going to join or come see what was taking place.
"I joined this group because I had nothing else better to do, that's what I told Fury, you can ask him for yourself," she said. "Now, if you would excuse me, I'm going to go get some food."
"And where do you plan on getting food because technically, you're not allowed to leave the tower without an escort."
Sucking her teeth, Kit was refraining from cursing out Clint, considering he had turned out to be the nicest to her so far. However, she didn't like the idea of needing a chaperone to walk around a city she knew better than the back of her hand.
"I don't need a damn babysitter, thank you very much. I know my way around New York, doesn't matter which borough."
Clint seemed amused by her irritation. "That's not the point. The point is, Fury doesn't want you out of anyone's sight because we're still not completely sure about you. We just learned your real name and if you're going to be part of us, we have to be sure of who exactly you are. So until then, you're going to be followed."
She thought about telling him off, she thought about pretending that she wasn't hungry anymore, just to make a point. But at the last second, Kit turned to Clint completely and gave a shrug of her shoulders.
"Fine, does that make you my escort for the evening?"
Apparently, that wasn't the answer Clint anticipated as he more or less figured she was just going to give up. But if he remembered anything from their earlier encounters, she wasn't exactly one to give up unless she could get something out of surrendering herself.
"Yeah, I guess, what were you in the mood for?"
"Chinese."
Once Clint announced to the others that he was leaving with Kit, he could already see them tense up. They asked if he really wanted to go alone and Clint didn't want to take offence to it, but they made it sound like he couldn't handle the simple task of just following a woman to get Chinese food. He reassured all of them that he would be fine before stepping out with Kit and then the two were surrounded by silence as they stepped into the elevator.
Eventually, when they reached ground level and stepped outside, they were greeted by the cooler night air and the loudness of the city. Clint flinched at the sound of the ambulance sirens in the distance before reaching his hand up to one of his hearing aids.
Tony had updated his hearing equipment with some software that was supposed to adjust to noise levels so he wasn't overwhelmed but it didn't seem to be working. If anything, it was quite the opposite, it seemed louder sounds were amplified.
"Why do you keep rubbing your ear like that?" He heard Kit ask him.
"I think one of my hearing aids is on the fritz right now," he grumbled, "it's either too loud or too quiet. And it's driving me insane."
He took it out and looked it over in his hand before looking over in Kit's direction, only to see that she was no longer beside him. Clint quickly looked the other way and al around, just to see that she had vanished.
"Shit."
Kit had waited until she noticed that Clint was distracted and took advantage of the opportunity to haul ass. She ran as fast as she could once he was focused on whatever was in his hand and the first corner that came up, she ran around it. It wasn't really her intention to run away completely, but she honestly didn't need Big Brother watching over.
Finally, when she figured she had created enough distance between her and Clint, Kit came to a stop and looked around to see where she had ended up. Of course, she wasn't far from any take out place, making it easy to find the small Chinese cuisine store on the corner. She headed inside, placing a quick order with the woman behind the counter and sat down at one of the booths to wait.
She made sure to choose a booth away from the window, learning her lesson from earlier to remain out of view.
"Some babysitter," she said to herself once she settled. "That was almost too easy. I feel like I should feel bad. Oh well, it'll pass."
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of someone yelling inside the small place. Kit peered up to see a man yelling at the woman behind the counter, his face turning red as he practically spat his words in the woman's face.
"That wasn't my order! How hard is it to figure out?!" He snapped. "This is why people need to learn how to speak English before they come here! What are you?! Stupid!"
"Dude, what the fuck," Kit said under her breath before pushing herself up and making her way over. "Hey, man, what's your problem?"
The man felt Kit's hand come to rest on his shoulder, neglecting the one that was entering the pocket of his jacket. He whipped around, standing a mere few inches from Kit's face.
"Mind your God damn business!"
Immediately, Kit pulled her hands away. "Alright, alright. Easy."
Without another audible word, the man stormed out of the place, attempting to slam the door behind him. The woman at the counter turned to tell the others in the back that the man walked out without paying. However, Kit lifted up the wallet she had snagged off the man and opened it up.
It revealed his license first. "Walter Monty," she read over. "Prick of the Day."
She pulled out the wad of cash that was tucked in the back of the wallet and handed it to the woman behind the counter, motioning for her to take it. And once her order was finished, Kit walked out and threw the wallet into a trash can.
"It doesn't pay to be nasty, Mr. Monty."
