"SHE WALKED IN ON YOU MAKING OUT?" ELEANOR EXCLAIMED. She had to just keep going on with her life after the incident at the tomb, so she went to school and talked to Caroline like she usually did, listening to all of the latest drama that she had for her after school. Apparently, Matt's mom had decided to come home at the exact wrong moment after being away for months, and she was not happy with what she found.
Caroline groaned with a nod, leaning down and banging her head on the table. She seemed absolutely mortified because it seemed that Kelly Donovan had not reacted well. "Yes, it was so awful. She hates me."
"I'm sure that's not true," Eleanor told her, sure that it could not have been that bad. What did she expect her teenage son to be doing? She must have known that he had girlfriends.
"You weren't there. She actually hates me," the Forbes girl assured her, putting her head in her hands and peering up at Eleanor through her fingers. "It's not even the making out thing. She would've been ecstatic if she walked in on him kissing Elena. It's me she has the problem with."
Eleanor shrugged. She doubted that it helped, but she informed her, "Well, I like you a lot more than Elena."
"Have you ever even interacted with Elena?" Caroline questioned with raised eyebrows. Eleanor definitely had, but not in any environment that she was able to tell the girl about. It had been purely supernatural business when she spoke to her. The blonde girl did not even wait for her to answer, assuming that she already knew. "It's nothing new. Everyone always likes Elena more, and why shouldn't they? She's perfect."
"She's far from perfect, and everyone else doesn't know what they're missing out on," the Chetwood girl assured her. Elena definitely seemed like a nice person and all but from what she had seen, Elleanor would much rather spend her time with Caroline than her.
Caroline grinned, "Thanks, Ellie."
After their talk, the girls walked over to the Grill for the some raffle fundraiser where they were raffling off the men of Mystic Falls. It was kind of really creepy, but the proceeds went to a Founder's Day celebration. Eleanor was sitting at the front check-in with Caroline and Matt, selling people their tickets.
"He's already been hit on, like, 35 times. He's total cougar bait," the Forbes girl told the brunette, gesturing to her boyfriend with a chuckle after yet another woman asked if he would be one of the prizes in the raffle. Considering he was seventeen, Eleanor was not sure if she should be excited by that.
The Chetwood girl nodded with raised eyebrows. "Impressive."
"More like embarrassing," Matt corrected her, shaking his head before turning to help the next person in line, who was once again eyeing him weirdly while he sat there uncomfortably. Eleanor sighed. If he were a girl, that would not have been taken lightly.
The next person to step up to the stand was a bitter-looking woman who had cougar written all over her. However, Caroline shot up, moving over to her with a smile. She greeted, "Hi, Mrs. Donovan."
"Elena, honey. Long time, no see," the woman said, completely ignoring the blonde girl and turning to the Gilbert, who had just approached them. Eleanor's jaw dropped, for that was one of the rudest things she'd ever witnessed. And she had been around for a long time. She hugged Elena and sighed, "Matty tells me you broke his heart."
"Mom," Matt warned, knowing what his mother was doing, and Eleanor moved over to rub the blonde girl's shoulder as she watched in dismay.
"Just kidding. Calm down. He found his rebound girl," she responded out loud while looking at Caroline. Eleanor watched the interaction in complete and utter shock. Kelly turned back and handed Caroline some money, and the blonde accepted it with a fake smile plastered on her face. "Oh. Here you go, sweetheart. However many that'll buy. I just hope I don't get Bachelor 3. I dated him in high school. Not impressive. In any way." Caroline handed her the tickets and waved goodbye as the woman walked away.
Her shoulders slumped almost immediately, and she sat down in a chair behind them, putting her head in her hands. Eleanor spun around to look at Matt with raised eyebrows. Once he noticed her staring, he looked around confused. "What?"
"What do you mean, 'what'?" she asked, wondering if he was being serious. He just witnessed everything that she had. "You're seriously going to let her treat Caroline like that?"
"She's my mom!" he countered, and she just stood there, staring at him in disbelief. She then turned around and walked toward the bar because it was the only thing she could do to not rip his head off right there.
The raffle was one of the least entertaining things that Eleanor had watched in her entire life, but what made it kind of fun to watch was all of the middle-aged women in the crowd thinking that it was the best thing ever. Carol Lockwood was on the stage, making her way across and asking the men questions. "And what do you do, Bachelor Number 3?"
"Yeah, I'm a plumber," he answered, and Eleanor prayed that Kelly got him and had the worst date of her entire life.
"Well, isn't that wonderful? We could always use more plumbers," the woman replied, clearly not sure how to respond. She just shrugged and turned to the next man, the vampire-hunting history teacher that had gotten the Gilbert journal stolen from him. "Moving on. Number 4, 'Alaric Saltzman.' Wow. That's quite a mouthful. What do you do, Alaric?"
He leaned into the microphone and answered, "I'm a teacher at Mystic Falls High."
"Oh, beauty and brains, ladies. This one's a keeper. What do you teach?" Carol asked him, and Eleanor's gaze landed on Damon, who was beside him and smirking mischievously. The brunette internally groaned, knowing that something was about to go down, and Damon was going to be like he always was β annoying.
Alaric responded, "History." He seemed like he really did not want to be there, and he kept glancing over at the Salvatore man beside him anxiously.
"History. Oh, well, give us a fun fact about Mystic Falls, something crazy," the Lockwood woman requested, and he just looked over at Damon once again, who place his hand up to his ear, sarcastically anticipating a response. Carol waited for an answer awkwardly before waving it off. "He's probably saving the best stories for his date. And last, but not least, Damon Salvatore. We don't have much on you."
"Well, I'm tough to fit on a card," the man responded with a smirk as he looked out on all of the ladies in the room. His eyes lingered on Elena for a moment before moving to Eleanor, and he winked at her. She just grabbed her drink and subtly flipped him off with the hand holding it.
Carol blushed at that for some reason. "Do you have any hobbies, like to travel?"
"Oh, yeah. L.A., New York. Couple of years ago, I was in North Carolina. Near the Duke campus, actually. I think β I think Alaric went to school there. Didn't you, Ric? Yeah, 'cause I β I know your wife did," Damon answered, and Eleanor placed down her drink slowly, shaking her head at the man. She did not even know what he was talking about, but she knew it was going to cause problems. "Damon: I had a drink with her once. She was β she was a great girl. I ever tell you that? Cause she was β Delicious. Mmm!"
Elena stood up right them and began walking out of the room, and Damon furrowed his eyebrows. As soon as he was dismissed from the stage, he ran after her, and Eleanor knew that whatever the reason was, he was about to regret what he said. The Chetwood girl just hoped he felt like crap and headed back to where Caroline was rewarding the winners of the raffle.
"Congratulations, Mrs. Donovan," she said sweetly, and Eleanor wanted to tell her that if Kelly wasn't going to treat her like a person, she did not need to treat her like one either. Someone had heard the brunette girl praying because the Donovan woman was going home with lovely Bachelor Number Three.
"Okay, just stop. Stop trying so hard. This thing you're doing, this nice thing, it's fake. Like you. Like your mom. And for some reason, Matt fell for it, but that doesn't mean that I will," Kelly ranted, and Eleanor felt the rage rise in her when she saw Caroline's beautiful smile drop. "I don't like you, okay?"
The Forbes girl looked like she was on the verge of tears, and Eleanor pushed past her and mustered up the most obviously fake smile that she could. Her voice was overly sweet and passive aggressive as she said, "Hi, Kelly, right? There's kind of a line here, so if you don't have anything of substance to say, could you move it along?"
"Tell plumber boy I'll be at the bar," Kelly muttered reluctantly, rolling her eyes, grabbing her purse, and walking away. Eleanor turned back around, and Caroline was trying to give her a thankful smile. However, as soon as she did, the tears began to fall. The Chetwood girl immediately just pulled her into a hug, rubbing her hair as she cried into her shoulder. She hoped that Kelly Donovan fell off a cliff and lived. She had never been more angry with a person ever, and it was kind of scary.
