vii. plane rides
As Abhishek sat in his seat, engrossed in the movie playing on the small screen in front of him, he felt a gentle weight settle against his shoulder. Glancing sideways, he was surprised to find Ishika leaning against him, her head nestled comfortably against his shoulder.
His heart skipped a beat as he stole a quick glance at her, marveling at how close she was to him. Despite the dimmed lights of the plane cabin, he could see the faint blush that colored her cheeks, the rise and fall of her chest as she breathed softly.
For a moment, Abhishek was frozen, unsure of what to do. But then, he remembered their earlier conversation and the tentative bond of friendship they had forged. With a hesitant smile, he shifted slightly to make her more comfortable, silently grateful for the unexpected closeness between them.
"Are you comfortable?" he whispered softly, his voice barely above a murmur, careful not to disturb her.
Ishika stirred slightly, her eyes fluttering open as she lifted her head from his shoulder. She offered him a sleepy smile, her gaze warm and affectionate.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the hum of the plane's engines. "Thanks for asking."
Abhishek's heart swelled with warmth at her words, a surge of affection washing over him. In that moment, he realized just how much he cherished their newfound friendship, and he vowed to do everything in his power to protect and nurture it, no matter what the future held.
As the movie played on in the background, Abhishek and Ishika settled into a comfortable silence, content in each other's company. And as the plane soared through the night sky, carrying them towards their destination, they both knew that this journey was just the beginning of an adventure neither of them would ever forget.
As the flight attendants made their way down the aisle, Abhishek eagerly accepted the vegetarian dish offered to him. However, when they reached Ishika's seat, her heart sank as the flight attendant apologized, informing her that they had run out of vegetarian options.
"I'm really sorry, ma'am," the flight attendant said apologetically, "but it seems we've run out of the vegetarian meal. Would you like something else instead?"
Ishika's stomach churned with disappointment, but she forced a polite smile. "Um, it's okay," she replied, her voice tinged with resignation, "I'll just have some fruit, please."
Abhishek's brow furrowed with concern as he overheard the exchange. Turning to Ishika, he offered her a sympathetic smile. "Hey, I'm sorry about that," he said softly, "I can share my meal with you if you'd like."
Ishika's heart swelled with gratitude at his offer, touched by his kindness. "Oh, no, that's okay," she replied, shaking her head, "I wouldn't want to impose on you."
But Abhishek waved off her concerns with a reassuring smile. "Nonsense," he said firmly, "We're friends, right? Friends share everything. Here, take some."
With a grateful nod, Ishika accepted a portion of Abhishek's meal, touched by his generosity. As they shared the food between them, their friendship deepened, strengthened by the simple act of kindness in the midst of a crowded airplane cabin. And as they chatted and laughed together, they both knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would always be there for each other, supporting and caring for one another every step of the way.
Abhishek leaned in slightly, his voice soft as he initiated the conversation. "So, Ishika, what made you decide to come to America for the T20 World Cup?"
Ishika smiled, her eyes brightening with excitement. "Well, you know how much I love cricket, even if I'm not out there playing on the field," she replied, her enthusiasm evident, "And when Virat got selected for the tournament, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to come support him and the team."
Abhishek nodded in understanding, a hint of admiration in his gaze. "That's really cool. It must be amazing to have a brother like Virat Kohli."
Ishika chuckled, a fond expression crossing her features. "Yeah, he's something else, that's for sure. But he's also incredibly overprotective, especially when it comes to me."
Abhishek raised an eyebrow in curiosity. "Overprotective? How so?"
Ishika laughed, shaking her head as she recalled some of Virat's more overbearing tendencies. "Oh, you know, the usual stuff. He's always keeping an eye on me, making sure I'm safe, warning me to stay away from boys..."
Abhishek's lips twitched with amusement. "Ah, the classic big brother move. I can relate, my sister's pretty protective of me too."
The conversation flowed easily between them, effortlessly bridging the gap between strangers and newfound friends. And as they shared stories and exchanged laughs, Abhishek couldn't help but feel grateful for the unexpected connection he had forged with Ishika—a connection that had blossomed amidst the chaos of a crowded airplane cabin, and one that he hoped would continue to grow and flourish in the days to come.
"So, Ishika," he began, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled between them, "besides cricket and being the sister of the legendary Virat Kohli, what else do you enjoy doing?"
Ishika set her tray aside, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. "Oh, where do I even begin?" she exclaimed, a smile playing on her lips, "I'm really passionate about fashion design. It's been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I love creating new designs, experimenting with fabrics and colors, and bringing my visions to life."
Abhishek listened intently, genuinely interested in learning more about Ishika's passions and interests. "That's amazing," he remarked, admiration evident in his voice, "It takes real talent and creativity to excel in a field like fashion design."
Ishika nodded, a proud glint in her eyes. "Thank you," she said warmly, "It's definitely a challenging industry, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I also love traveling, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures. And of course, spending time with my family and friends is really important to me."
Abhishek smiled, feeling a sense of kinship with Ishika as she shared her love for creativity, adventure, and connection. "It sounds like we have a lot in common," he remarked, "I've always enjoyed traveling too, especially when we're on tour for cricket. It's a great way to unwind and explore new places."
Their conversation flowed effortlessly, weaving through topics ranging from their favorite travel destinations to their shared love of cricket. And as they chatted and laughed together, Abhishek couldn't shake the feeling that he had found a kindred spirit in Ishika—a connection that transcended their differences and promised the potential for a meaningful friendship.
As they continued their conversation, Ishika suddenly remembered something. "Hey, Abhishek," she said, her eyes lighting up with recognition, "I just realized something. Vikram Sharma, your brother, right?"
Abhishek nodded, curious. "Yeah, that's him. How do you know Vikram?"
Ishika smiled warmly. "Vikram and I are really good friends. We've known each other for a while now. He's mentioned you a few times, actually. He always talks about how proud he is of his younger brother."
Abhishek's face lit up with a mixture of pride and surprise. "Really? Vikram's always been my biggest supporter, but it's great to hear that he talks about me to his friends too. Small world, huh?"
Ishika chuckled. "Yeah, it really is. I remember him mentioning your cricket career and how talented you are. It's funny, I never made the connection until now. He always had good things to say about you."
Abhishek felt a surge of warmth at Ishika's words. "Vikram's always been like that, always encouraging and supportive. He's the best brother anyone could ask for."
Ishika's smile grew softer. "You two must be really close. It's nice to see siblings who support each other like that."
Abhishek nodded. "We are. He's always had my back, and I try to do the same for him. It's great to know he has such good friends like you."
Ishika's eyes twinkled with affection for her friend. "Well, Vikram is a great guy. We always have a good time when we hang out. He's actually the one who inspired me to be more confident and chase my dreams."
Abhishek smiled, feeling a deeper connection with Ishika through their shared bond with Vikram. "I'm glad to hear that. Vikram has a way of inspiring people. I'm really lucky to have him as my brother."
Ishika nodded in agreement. "You really are. And now, I guess I'm lucky to have met you too, Abhishek. It's nice to finally put a face to the name."
Abhishek felt a warm sense of camaraderie as they continued to chat, realizing that this chance meeting was more than just a coincidence. It was the beginning of a meaningful connection, forged through shared experiences and mutual admiration.
