    at her core, akino is a very, very kindhearted individual. every action she does always has a positive intention behind it, whether it helps or harms others. being compassionate to a fault, she tends to put the needs of others first before her own, although she'd usually brush it off as simply being "nice". growing up with a protective family taught her to be protective of others as well, no matter if they're older or stronger than her, which is also why studying medicine is the right path for her, where her instinct to tend and care for others can shine.

   due to her pushover nature, akino does not have the backbone to stand up for herself. while being inherently selfless is a good thing, it's easy for her to fall victim for others to exploit. this is due to the fact that she hates confrontation and would rather submit and endure rather than face the problem at hand. akino has a delicate heart, while which is the source for her kindness, also makes them sensitive to criticism and disapproval. and being the quiet person she is, she internalizes those comments which leads her to have a low self-esteem. however, she is quite ashamed of asking for help and would rather keep their emotions locked away, shutting down others instead of addressing her true feelings.

  another thing about akino is that she's painfully aware of her flaws and weaknesses, except that she does hardly anything to fix them or acknowledge them out loud. she knows that everyone has their own shortcomings and you can either choose to embrace or ignore them, and akino chooses the latter. akino is also a keen learner and can comprehend information easily.

childhood. ━━
akino never remembered who her mother was. she was raised by her father with the help of her three older brothers, the oldest two being a pair of twins, and the youngest just a year older than her. growing up, the role of the mother was taken over by her grandma, who seemed to be always mourning, usually telling akino how much she resembled her mother. her family rarely speaks of her mother, and even when akino tries to ask about her, the only information they give was her name - kaori koike. 

  she was rather meek and shy as a child, with few friends in kindergarten and the preference of being alone. even at home, where her brothers give her most of their attention, she's still quiet. her grandma would often urge her to be more sociable, and while she did make attempts to be friendly, she doesn't attract much people. maybe the lack of proper parental figures in the house are a factor for her withdrawn nature, as although her brothers take good care of her, they still have their own work and school to worry about, her father was often away at work as a professor in martial arts, which left only her grandma to support her, even though her memory is slowly ailing and her vision declining.

  despite that, akino was a studious child, and spent most of her free time reading or studying. she was responsible of her studies, not wanting to be a burden to her father, and usually was at the top of her class.

  her grandma's health continued to decline. akino's father took a short break from his job to care for her, but being the family's sole breadwinner, he cannot stay for long, so with her consent, her father placed her in a facility that specializes in caring for the ailing elderly. akino was heartbroken by the revelation, but kept quiet about her feelings, not wanting to trouble her father further.

  the absence of her grandma also sparked a concern in her father's mind, as her two older brother's were preparing to start university and leave home at that time, which left akino mostly alone with her other brother. he began to take her to the martial arts center where he taught her how to defend herself, like how he used to do with her older brothers. initially she was hesitant about it, as she was disinclined with violence, but under her father's patient teaching, she eventually got better and better at it. 
adulthood. ━━
after graduating, she was granted a scholarship at a renowned university that specializes in medicine and decided to major in nursing. however, she noticed that one of her eye is misaligned, when is wasn't before. she ignored it at first, but after many months the misaligned eye becomes more prominent and she had actual trouble with reading. after seeing an ophthalmologist, they concluded that she had amblyopia and had two choices - by vision therapy, which takes a much longer time to see the outcomes, or enhance the eye by using advance technology. her father immediately insisted that she choose the latter, even though it is more costly, he still wanted the best for his daughter, knowing that she would have difficulty studying otherwise. eventually, akino caved and went through the eye enhancement surgery.

  when the student JIAN program opened up, akino was encouraged by her family to join, especially her oldest brother, who did not pass the testing program. either way, she was deciding to join the program, hoping that it'd give her family a name and improve their lives, and even if she had failed, it would still be an honor, she wasn't that optimistic that she'd be chosen but it seemed like the spotlight decided to shine on her, as she was selected to be apart of team pistill.
