CHAPTER ONE

AENORA WALKED THROUGH THE LARGE halls of the Red Keep. She kept her head down and her eyes on her feet as she walked. She knew her way around the castle well enough to do this. Her father had called for her to meet him in the small council chamber. As she made her way through the halls, she wondered what he wanted to speak to her about. This was unusual to her because the only time they really spoke was during meals and after small council meetings, other than that they didn't really spend time together.
When Aenora approached the chamber two guards opened the large doors. She stood there for a moment, debating on whether she should be worried or not. As she entered, she decided she was worried.
Aenora would worry herself to death if that was possible. It was a normal thing for her to be worried about anything and everything. No matter how much she tried not to worry, she'd somehow find something to stress over, even if everything was fine.
"Father. You wished to speak to me?" Aenora stood with her hands held together behind her back.
Viserys turned from the window to face his daughter. He smiled lightly as a greeting.
"I did," he said.
"May I sit?"
"Yes, of course."
Both Aenora and Viserys took a seat across from each other. Aenora sat where Corlys Valeryon would usually be seated and Viserys sat in his own seat.
Aenora tapped her fingers on the wooden table. "What is it you want to talk about?" she asked.
Viserys cleared his throat as he looked away from his daughter. He questioned his decisions at that moment. He did not want to tell his first born child, his first born daughter, that she was old enough to be wed. Viserys dreaded this day, but he knew it had to come. He did not want to see Aenora leave home.
"It is time for you to marry, Aenora. I already have a few proposals."
This didn't come to as a shock to Aenora, but it also wasn't exciting. She knew this day would eventually come, honestly she thought it'd be sooner. Aenora looked at her father with worry evident in her eyes, she wondered who the proposals were from. Aenora knew her father would never force her into a marriage with someone she wouldn't want to be with. Though, she never thought of who she would like to wed.
Aenora was well aware of the fact that who she did marry would have to be political. Viserys would never tell her this directly, but everyone understood this.
"Who do you suggest?" Aenora asked.
Aenora could've asked who were her options and chose herself, but she wanted to see if Viserys had her best interest in mind or the thrones. She also wanted to see if this truly was political or if it was simply just time for her to wed.
"Your uncle. Daemon," Viserys said.
All Aenora could think was 'why?'. Viserys had no political gain marrying her to his brother. Matter of fact, Daemons claim to the Iron Throne could possibly become stronger with her at his side, considering she was the first born and Viserys had no son.
Unless, Aemma was with child. Aenora pondered on that thought. It made sense, if her mother bore a son inside of her, Viserys would have his heir and Daemon would not have a claim. Viserys' intention became clear to Aenora; she was a peace offering to his brother.
"Mother is with child, correct?"
"How did you know?"
"I'm not implying that you think I'm an idiot, but I'm not."
"You've always been too smart for your own good."
Viserys had always known of his daughters intelligence. He had never been able to lie to her simply because she'd always figure it out.
"I also know that I am practically appeasement for Daemon," Aenora played with the ends of her hair as she spoke.
"I wouldn't think of it like that," Viserys chuckled.
"Tell me the truth and I will marry him."
Aenora wasn't necessarily opposed to the idea of marrying Daemon. She knew becoming a wife was inevitable.
Aenora and Daemon had an odd relationship. It wasn't like uncle and niece although that's what they are. It was more tension-filled with unspoken thoughts and feelings. At the age of five and ten Aenora didn't understand her attraction to him but as she grew older the more she understood. Daemon was ambitious and tempered while she was gentle and patient. Daemon was not only attracted to her beauty but as well as her voice, intelligence, compassion, and soft demeanor. And Aenora was attracted to his looks, fearlessness, cleverness, how he was free-spoken, and how he was kind to her.
Viserys thought carefully of how to tell her the truth. He was unaware of the affections Daemon and Aenora had for one another.
"I have not been the best of brothers to Daemon, and he and I agreed that if you were to wed him it would bring us all closer." Viserys told her.
Aenora smiled out of amusement, "Pleasant way of rewording what I had previously stated. However, you did tell me the truth, so I will marry Daemon."
Viserys was pleased.
This way he new what kind of person his daughter was marrying. He thought that his daughter could calm his ambitions and he would settle down. Aenora was smart enough to know that might not be the truth. She knew Daemon did as he pleased, when he pleased.
After their conversation, Aenora made her way to her mothers chambers. She didn't know if Viserys had made her aware of the current situation. Not only did she want to let her know she was now betrothed to Daemon, but she also wanted her mothers opinion on the matter.
Aenora was very close with her mother. She told Aemma everything and thought very highly of her. Aenora respected everything her mother said. She loved her mother to no end, and so did Aemma. In Aenoras mind Aemma could do no wrong.
Aenora smiled as she walked towards her mother, who was sitting in a chair on the balcony, fanning herself.
"Aenora, sweet child." Aemma motioned her hand to the seat next to her.
"Mother, how are you?"
"I am fine, and you?"
Aenora didn't know how to respond. She didn't really think about how she felt knowing that she was now engaged.
Aenora felt both sad, worried, yet relieved and content. She felt sad since she knew she'd soon be leaving her home. Worried because she didn't think she would know how to 'wife' properly, and that she would not make Daemon happy. But she felt relieved and content, she knew what kind of person she was going to marry and she also knew she'd make the best of any situation she was put in. She was an optimistic person who had normal worries.
Aemma noticed how her daughters attention shifted.
"Your father finally talked to you, yes?" Aemma grabbed her daughters hand and held it as if to comfort her.
All Aenora could do was nod.
Aemma knew her daughter well enough to know that she was letting her stresses get the best of her. She knew this because she herself was once in the same position.
"Daemon will make a good husband and you will make an even better wife, darling. If he's not good to you all you have to do is march back here and tell us. Your father will have Daemons hands if he makes you unhappy in the slightest." Aemma smiled at her.
"I suppose I won't be married for long then," Aenora joked. "But honestly mother, I will miss you once I am married and live on Dragonstone. Who will I go to when I need to talk or simply just need a hug?"
Aemma frowned slightly, "You will have Daemon. Viserys does not see what I see between you and Daemon. He does care for you, Nora. And missing your mother is a normal thing, when I married your father, I missed my mother terribly. But, I will miss you too, sweet girl."
Aenora hugged Aemma and smiled.
"Enough about me. I hear you are with child?"
"Did Viserys tell you, or did you figure it out on your own?"
"I figured it out."
Aemma grinned, "You know when I was pregnant with Rhaenyra, you were the one who knew before anyone else. You figured it out just by looking at me."
"I have no recollection of that, but I believe it."
"Your father thinks it's a boy," Aemma told her.
"I hope he finally gets his son," Aenora said.
Aenora wished this because she knew Viserys wouldn't stop if it was another girl. She did not wish for her mother to go through the pain of losing another child. Every time she lost a child a price of Aemma would go with.
"As do I."
This was another fear that factored into Aenoras worries about her marriage. She wouldn't know how to react if she ever lost a child the way her mother has. She prayed that when the time came that she'd be able to carry and produce a child without any difficulties.
"When are you planning on telling Nyra?"
"Soon," Aemma replied. "How do you think she'll feel about it?"
Aenora thought for a second before answering.
"I think she'll be happy for you, but understandably worried, as we all are."
Aenora and Aemma continued to talk about her pregnancy for awhile longer before Aenora decided to go for a walk in the gardens to clear her head.
Aenora thought about all of the things that could be great and of course, all of the things that could go wrong. But like she thought before, she'd do everything in her power to make the best out the situation.
