𝒙𝒙. witnesses and interrogation
❝ anything for you, angel. ❞
SPENCER AND OLIVIA were back at the police precinct. the team has already delivered the profile to the police officers, as well as the press to notify young women to stay safe. they've deducted that the unsub is a caucasian man, most likely in his early 20's to early 30's. the unsub is quite attractive, making him appealing to women, which is how he gains their trust. he's also most likely physically fit. "there's a woman who just reported that she had an interaction with the criminal." one of the police officers stated, walking into the conference room where the BAU was working.
"liv, jj?" hotch asked, wanting them to talk to the woman.
she was in one of the empty rooms in the precinct. she looked a lot like anna. the only difference being her heart shape face and she was relatively younger. olivia and jj watched as she paced back and forth in the room, picking at her nails, but refraining herself once her eyes laid on the two agents.
"oh, hi. um, i'm sydney." the woman stopped pacing.
"hi, i'm agent jareau and this is agent griffins." she introduced themselves, as they sat down. the woman's voice was shaky, "yeah, i saw you guys on the news."
"do you wanna sit down and tell us what you saw?" olivia calmly asked her.
sydney nodded her head, slowly sitting down in front of the two profilers. her face still displayed an expression of distraught. a sigh escaped from sydney's lips, "okay, so i saw you in the news and you guys said people who look like me should be cautious, which is what i did, by the way. but i was supposed to meet my friends at this coffee shop, and these two guys stopped me."
"there were two?" jennifer asked her.
the younger blonde nodded her head before continuing. she closed her eyes, attempting to remember details from the interaction. she wanted to help in any way she can.
sydney was walking down the sidewalk, on her phone, but constantly looking up to check her surroundings. the warm spring air hitting her skin as she got closer to her destination. she could practically already smell the aroma of coffee beans. from her peripheral vision, she could see the figures of two shadows projected on the sidewalk.
"hey." a man stopped her. she was quite startled by the action as her body jolted slightly.
sydney's eyes looked up at him, then to the guy beside him. she couldn't deny that the man who stopped her looked very attractive. however, she noticed his friend was very shy, as he tried to not make any eye contact with her.
"sorry to disturb you, but you are so pretty." he complimented, letting out a slight chuckle. "i thought you were a model for a second." she awkwardly smiled at him and his cheesy pick-up line, not knowing what to do and obviously uncomfortable, "thanks."
"yeah, of course. so um, i was wondering. do you wanna get lunch or something with my friend and i? my car is just down the block. or we can go around the corner for some food?" he pointed behind him.
she hesitated to answer him. his eyes were slightly squinted, as the sun hit his face, highlighting his green eyes and dark hair. "no, i really shouldn't. i'm supposed to be meeting my friends in the coffee shop."
"it won't hurt. it'll be a quick lunch, i'm sure they'd understand." he said, grabbing her wrist just as she was about to walk away.
"let go, you're hurting me." she immediately demanded as each second, the man's grip on her wrist only grew tighter. she attempted to squirm out of his grip until her action was interrupted by his friend.
his friend spoke up as the man continued to glare at her, "hayden, what are you doing? c'mon, let's just leave her alone." she couldn't tell if the tone of his voice suggested he was scolding him or if he was trying to ignore the interaction in general. the man listened to him and let go of sydney, the pair of friends walking away.
sydney opened her eyes, her vision a little distorted due to the water forming in her eyes. olivia grabbed her hand, her warm hand meeting sydney's cold one, "you did great, thank you."
"did any of them mention any names?" jj questioned.
sydney thought back again, remembering to when the two men walked away from her. "the shy one called the man hayden before they left."
"were you able to gather any identification of the friend?" jj asked her. sydney shook her head, "no, the glare from the sun kinda covered him and he tried looking away most of the time. but he was the one who helped me."
"so, hayden was the one who tried to abduct you, but his friend stopped him, and you don't think the friend is working with him?" olivia asked. she was mostly just thinking aloud, but sydney nodded her head in response. "do you think you could be able to describe hayden to a sketch artist?"
"yeah, definitely."
≻───── ⋆✩⋆ ─────≺
"hey, babygirl. what you got for me?" derek answered his phone, talking to penelope on the other end. "hello, my love." penelope greeted. "i ran that sketch through the facial recognition software, and i have a match! i present to you, hayden cameron."
a picture and some files about hayden was sent to their tablets, the agents swiping through the photos. penelope continued explaining the information she's found, "hayden cameron, 24 years old. he's lived in a predominantly nice household; both his parents were present, he has two siblings, straight a's in school. but a few years ago, he dated lisa montgomery, who does look a lot like anna. she apparently broke up with him and started dating his best friend."
hotch chimed in, "which is why he targets people who like her. garcia?"
"address already sent, sir!" penelope said before hanging up.
hotch and the rest of the team put their FBI bullet proof vest on, ready to arrive at hayden's house. the team split up in two groups as they took two separate SUVs to their destination. once they showed up, they found that hayden wasn't there. a few of them muttered a few curses in dismay.
"garcia?" olivia called her.
"what can i do for you, my sweet little angel?" even though no one could physically see her, olivia could tell penelope was smiling from the other end. unfortunately, olivia was stressed, and as much as she would love to smile back at the marvelous voice of penelope garcia, she just couldn't. "hayden isn't here. is there any other property he owns, or maybe his parents?" olivia asked.
the distant sounds of keys on the keyboard being pressed on was the only thing heard in the background for a few seconds. "his parents' house is now a small coffee shop in the neighborhood, and he doesn't own any other properties."
olivia sighed as penelope continued to search, "but don't worry my love, i am trying my very hardest to track his phone right now. it is currently pinging off of. . . okay, i got the address and it is sent!"
"thank you penelope, you are a saint." olivia told her. "anything for you, angel." penelope grinned before the two hung up.
the team split up once again, driving to the new address. the passing streets seemed familiar. the trees, establishments, people. "oh my god." olivia muttered.
"what's wrong?" derek asked, as he was driving him, liv, emily and jj.
"this is devin wyatt's house, arthur's son. reid and i ruled him out because of his behavior and our profile." olivia shut her eyes in disbelief as they were nearing his house.
they met up with the other half of the team in the front yard of devin's home. derek broke down the door as the rest of the team followed while a few police officers waited outside. devin and hayden were seated in the living room, eyes widened at the sudden events. "what are you doing?" devin asked, the question mostly targeted towards olivia and spencer who stood behind hotch and morgan.
"hayden cameron and devin wyatt, you're under arrest for the kidnapping and murder of jasmine michaels, sierra tom, marla kline, and camille reyes." derek stated. in immediate motions, hayden started running, derek and emily going after him.
devin stood in front of the other agents as they had their guns pointed at him. he slowly put his hands up while hotch cuffed his wrists in handcuffs. derek and emily came back with hayden between the both of them, his hands behind his back, handcuffed.
they brought the two men back to the station for questioning. they wanted to know why they did what they did. derek questioned hayden while olivia was questioning devin. spencer and jj watched from the one way glass as olivia walked into the interrogation room.
she placed a file down on the metal table as she sat down across from devin. "why did you tell us you weren't involved when you were?"
"that's because i wasn't. hayden is my friend, and we were just hanging out. i had no idea he was the one who committed those murders." devin explained.
"do you remember sydney? the blonde woman from this afternoon that hayden confronted?" she asked, waiting for a response.
"i mean, yeah, sure?"
"were you aware that hayden was trying to abduct her?"
his eyes widened, "no. oh my god, i thought he was just acting weird. that's why i told him to stop and we should go."
"devin," olivia started but was quickly interrupted by him.
"i'm telling you, i had nothing to do with this. it's just a coincidence that we're friends." his voice slightly raised.
"have you ever told him about your father?" she finished asking her question.
"yeah, i only told him who he was and he seemed familiar with the name." he answered.
"why did hayden target people who look like me and anna?"
"i don't know. again, he was familiar with the name so he probably looked up what happened with him and saw the two of you. i've never even mentioned you to him. but he did have a blonde girlfriend who dumped him and got with one of his other friends." he told.
without another word, olivia left the room, entering the other side of the one way mirror with spencer and jj. "i cannot believe i'm saying this, but i don't think devin was involved in the way we think he was. he doesn't even fit the profile, but hayden does." jj sighed, "as much as it makes sense for devin to be involved, he just doesn't seem like he was. i mean if he really did kill those girls, then why did he stop hayden from getting their newest victim?"
ultimately, they ended up letting devin go, and they still had hayden in custody. the team was now packing up all their belongings and files from their workspace in the precinct. "i'm sorry you had to relive a traumatic part of your past." spencer spoke to olivia as they were the only two still cleaning up. "when you were talking about the arthur wyatt case yesterday, it was clear that it's an upsetting memory for you. and especially your feeling of guilt when arthur. . . and when devin wasn't. . ." spencer trailed off, not knowing the correct choice of words.
"spence, it's okay, really." she smiled at him. "thank you for caring."
olivia wanted to say it. she wanted to say the three words she never thought she'd say to someone romantically. in that moment, the words i love you almost slipped out. they've been dating for over four months now and they've been almost inseparable, to the point where she'd make fun of herself if it wasn't her. it's insanely cliché, but olivia couldn't imagine what her life would be like if she's never met spencer. but four months was too soon, right?

once the team had drove back to the BAU from D.C., they settled down and began their reports. one by one, everyone started to pack their things up again, but to go home this time. jj, derek, penelope, and emily had already left. hotch and rossi were still in their offices as olivia and spencer were the only ones left in the bullpen, olivia gathering her possessions. spencer was going to stay behind for a little while to finish on his paperwork. "liv, if you want i can walk you down to your car." spencer stood up. she thought about it for a few seconds, "um, no, it's okay, thank you though."
"are you sure?"
"yes, i'm sure. i'll see you tomorrow, spence." she grinned.
spencer had a soft smile on his face as he planted a quick kiss on her lips goodbye, "call me when you get home, okay?" she nodded her head, leaving the bullpen, "mhm."
as spencer sat back down in his chair, he realized something about the case. his realization didn't go unnoticed since rossi asked what he was thinking about when he left his office. "hey kid, you all right?"
"yeah. . ." he started. "i just realized that it doesn't make sense. hayden just wanted to kill people who looked like his ex-girlfriend out of revenge. but there's still the victims who look nothing like her, and instead look more like liv. devin said hayden knew who his father was and might've looked up his case and saw olivia. but why would he want revenge on her?"
rossi thought about his words for a few seconds, "i mean, hayden did copy arthur's MO and other details of the case. he was probably obsessed with him and wanted to take out the agent who killed his role model."
"maybe. . ." spencer thought aloud. he trailed off as his eyebrows quirked and he thought about the case some more.
meanwhile, olivia walked to her car down at the parking garage. it was empty and quiet, the only sounds coming from the treads of her low doc martens hitting the concrete pavement with every step she took. she reached for her car keys and pressed the button, two beeps interrupting the silence present in the garage. her hand reached for the door handle to the driver's seat of her car, but was abruptly interrupted by a piece of cloth harshly pressing down on the bottom half of her face. her vision gradually started to get blurry and she could feel her limbs get weak before she could even process what was happening. however, what she was able to do was to let one of her rings slide off her finger. the small, golden object making a quiet clanging sound on the pavement that was drowned out by olivia's muffled cries for help. before she knew it, she was being dragged into a different vehicle. it was the last thing she could remember before her eyes involuntarily closed shut.
