❝ okay, my criminal, deceased dad has a weird groupie. ❞
( tw: mentions of abuse, and really
other common themes expected in
a criminal minds episode )
FOUR MONTHS AFTER the team figured out spencer and olivia's relationship, everything seemed to be normal. the couple basically spends all their time together and they still manage to not let it affect the way they work. they don't think they've ever felt this happy for a long period of time in a very long time. currently, the team sat at the round table, ready for another case penelope was about to present to them. her colorful presence entered the room, standing beside the screen and grabbing its remote to show the team crime photos and information. "hello, mighty crime fighters." she greeted, "this one is a real doozy. jasmine michaels, sierra tom, marla kline, and camille reyes."
pictures of the four women showed up on the screen, the team's gaze shifting from their files and tablets to the screen. penelope continued, "their bodies were found behind a dumpster in the local washington d.c. area. jasmine and sierra were found together a couple days ago and marla and camille were found this morning."
"jasmine and sierra died only seconds apart. same thing with marla and camille." derek read the reports. garcia nodded her head, "marla and camille were actually teachers in a middle school together."
"chances are they were also abducted together." hotch commented. jj furrowed her eyebrows, reading the files, "wait, the unsub's MO. doesn't it sound familiar?"
everyone read the reports again. as olivia realized what she was talking about, she gradually started to tense as she tried to straighten her posture, grabbing spencer's attention. he didn't say anything about it though, and instead informed everyone what jj meant. "the case of arthur wyatt." spencer stated.
"he's the psychopathological sadist who tortured and murdered around 10 women back in '05, right?" derek questioned.
"so we're dealing with a copycat?" emily asked. "we have to be. arthur wyatt died in 2005 when being arrested." olivia deadpanned.
the team noticed her change of emotion from her tone of voice. they didn't question it though, thinking maybe it could've been a rough start to her morning — even though they're supposed to be an elite team of profilers. when looking at the pictures of the four victims, emily furrowed her eyebrows, noticing a very odd detail. "is it just me, or do these women look like liv and anna?"
they all looked back at the pictures. two of the women had dark, long hair, olive skin, and dark brown eyes, just like olivia. the other two women had long blonde hair and blue eyes, who happened to be around the same height as anna. it freaked them out a little, especially olivia.
the team arrived at the local pd, introducing themselves and setting up their workspace. olivia has been quiet and she's been zoning off a few times ever since that morning. of course, it didn't go unnoticed by spencer. so, when they were hanging up crime scene and the victim's photos on the dry erase board — that was basically just a glass pane with a border and wheels — he decided to confront her about it.
"are you okay? you've been acting a little off recently." he asked. "mhm." she mumbled, nodding her head, struggling to not make eye contact.
"you know, you shouldn't be keeping things bottled up. suppressing your emotions can lead to physical stress on your body, and avoiding them can actually lead to memory problems, aggression, anxiety, and depression. emotional stress can also cause a lot of physical problems. and refraining your feelings from yourself and others can endanger your health and well-being, both physically and psychologically." spencer informed her.
before olivia could reply, garcia called them, finding new information. previously on the jet, hotch told her to look for relatives of arthur or groupies that he had. hotch answered the answering machine, "what do you have garcia?"
"okay, so i looked for relatives arthur wyatt has and he only has one that's alive. his son, devin wyatt. he was in and out of foster homes for a few years until he was 16. he was adopted by mr. and mrs. blanchard." her reading of the information was followed by empathetic wincing noises, "poor guy, he was physically abused in his foster homes and CPS visited his adoptive home many times due to mr. and mrs. blanchard abusing him as well, while their biological kids watched."
olivia was appalled at the new information. she has thought that maybe, just maybe, there was some way she could've prevented it. when he was 13, she promised him she would visit him in his foster home every weekend, which she did live up to. she visited him every saturday. until he was 14. she didn't visit him because of a case that had to be extended. she felt terrible, and she tried reaching out to him to tell him she would be gone for a little while, but she couldn't get through to him. when she was back in town, they told her he's been moved to a different foster home, and refused to tell her due to safety and security reasons. she never saw him again after that and every day she would wonder how he's doing. she was desperately hoping he wouldn't be the unsub, but it just made a lot of sense.
"he moved out when he was 18 and moved back in town." garcia finished.
"address?" hotch asked.
"already sent, sir!" garcia said before hanging up.
"reid, griffins, go to the address garcia sent and see if he knows anything. as of now, we don't have much evidence against him. if you're sure devin is the unsub, please call for backup immediately." hotch told them.
the two nodded their heads, grabbing a few of their belongings and walking out of the precinct as they finished putting on their FBI vests for safety. olivia trailed behind spencer, hesitant with every step, until she just completely stopped once they got to the car.
"liv, you're definitely not okay." spencer said, "come here, i'll drive this time." he switched places with her, getting in the driver's seat as olivia sat in the passenger's.
"anna and i worked the arthur wyatt case." olivia blurted, looking out the car window, catching glimpses of the passing streets. trees, greenery, restaurants, shops, clothing stores, and other establishments passed by along with civilians and other individuals who probably don't have a clue in the world about olivia's current state. truthfully, she envied them. they didn't have the image of them firing two bullets into a criminal's shoulder, killing them and leaving behind a prepubescent teenage boy who barely knew how to live life behind, engraved in their memory.
his eyes started to shift between her and the road, "so that's why you've been acting weird. you're experiencing a deja vu-like state."
"yeah. and i'm technically the reason why he died." she told spencer, fidgeting with one of the rings on her fingers. during the ride to devin's house, she explained to him how she would visit devin, and how horrible she felt being the one who technically killed his father. he assured her many times that none of this is her fault, even if devin does end up to be the unsub.
"via, what happened to devin and what happened to arthur is not your fault. if you hadn't done what you did then arthur could've killed many more women. he would've killed anna. in the end, you did the right thing." he ensured her, gripping her hand which successfully gave her comfort.
once they've arrived at their destination, spencer was the one to knock on the front door. "devin wyatt, FBI."
the sounds of the door's locks unlocking was heard from the other end, revealing a more matured looking devin wyatt since the last time olivia saw him. both spencer and olivia pulled out their badges for him to see.
as he read the griffins woman's badge, his recollection of her gradually started flooding back. "olivia?" he questioned. "hi, devin. can we come in? we need to ask you a few questions." she responded.
he opened the door wider as he stepped aside, allowing more room for the two of them to enter his home. he led them to the living room, where the three sat down. "what is this about? the only real adult figure in my life practically. . . abandons me at that foster home and then six years later you show up unannounced at my house all of a sudden." devin scoffed.
olivia didn't address his statement. she was there for one reason, and it was to get answers from him for the case. she couldn't let something personal get in the way of this case. olivia pulled out her phone, swiping through pictures of the four victims, "do you know any of these women?"
devin pushed his head a little forward to get a better look, "i saw them on the news this morning. where is this going?" spencer and olivia shared a look before their gaze returning back to devin. he saw the interaction between the two, causing him to speak up once again, "oh my god, you guys think i did that, don't you?"
"devin, these murders parallel the ones your father committed years ago. and these victims are physically similar to agent griffins and anna edwards, the agents who worked his case." spencer voiced.
"okay, my criminal, deceased dad has a weird groupie." he remarked. "i guarantee you i didn't do that. yeah, it's weird that those women look like olivia and anna, but i didn't do them."
his behavior seemed normal. well, as normal as it could be when you're being accused for the abduction and murder of four women. devin's eyes were steady and the tone of his voice seemed genuine. spencer examined his posture and there hasn't been any slight change. normally when someone is accused of a crime they did commit, their posture changes. whether they cross or uncross their legs, or they sit up straighter. devin didn't do any of that. there was no tell that gave him away for this crime. maybe there was actually a chance he was innocent, and he just happened to be the closest relative to arthur.
"well, do you know anyone who's had a strange fascination with your dad? they might've asked about him, or what your experiences were with him, or basically anything about the murders?" olivia asked.
devin shook his head, "no."
olivia and spencer didn't have the evidence against devin to arrest him. as much as it makes sense that it was him killing all these people, his facial expressions, tone of voice, and mannerisms threw them off. it was as if devin had nothing to hide. when leaving devin's home, the two agents informed him that they will be staying in touch in case of new information.
"devin, i'm sorry for what happened to you." olivia muttered before leaving.
