Wait! You Forgot the Plot Twist
Tegwen heard the commotion in the distance and was terrified about the scene that she was going to come upon. However, she pressed on and saw the light at the end of the tunnel, but suddenly heard Tina's voice calling out. Relief washed over the woman to know that Tina was alright, but her heart rate began to accelerate even more as she didn't know the whereabouts of the others. She pressed her back against the side of the tunnel and inched her way towards Tina's voice, keeping the Auror's wand ready.
"Credence! No!" Tina yelled as Tegwen reached the mouth of the tunnel. Her eyes focused on Tina but immediately went past the woman as she saw Newt and Mr. Graves on the tracks with the Obscurus looming over them. She couldn't believe her eyes as she saw what Credence had become. A swirl of black that symbolized all the repression the boy had faced, from all the years of hiding of what he truly was. She felt guilty for not realizing that the boy was one of them, and she was certain that Tina was feeling the same exact way in that moment.
All the moments of what could have been weighed heavily on the group as Tina stood a little ways away from the Credence, who's gaze fell upon her. Many would associate the black swirl with evil, but in that moment Tegwen could only see it as innocence. The innocence of a boy that had been let down. The society he had grown up in had raised fear in the hearts and minds of muggles and magic folk. He had been caught in the middle, unsure of what to do or how to find help.
Yet society on either part was not willing to budge on their views. They were willing to remain enemies rather than coming together to help one another. Enemies on both sides were being born and raised every single day.
Tegwen's mind immediately went back to Paul and how much he appreciated the magic. How it brought a smile to the boy's face when he spoke about the Erumpent. But under the MACUSA law, his mind would be obliviated and he would grow up hearing people like Mary Lou Barebone bash the idea of magic, claiming it was evil. His innocent views of magic would be tainted and he would probably grow up to be like one of the people that had hurt Credence.
She couldn't help but think that Credence certainly wasn't the first Obscurus and he certainly wouldn't be the last at the rate the world was going. More and more children would find themselves hiding who they truly were and what they felt in fear that they would be labeled as monsters by their family and peers. Eventually, all the pain would build and build until the point of no return.
"Don't do this, please!" Tina pleaded with Credence.
Newt looked over urging Tina to keep talking to the boy that was hiding behind the darkness.
"He'll listen to you! He's listening to you!"
Credence's form moved towards Tina like a frightened child, which was exactly what he was. Nothing more than a frightened child looking for someone to help him. Tina had been the person to rescue him once when she saved him from one of Mary Lou's beating. His desperation had heightened, hoping that Tina would save him and take him away from all the pain that he was experiencing.
"I know what that woman did to you...I know that you suffered..."
Tegwen could feel a lump develop in her throat again as Tina tried to talk Credence down. She couldn't believe it had come down to this, Tegwen didn't understand why people placed themselves in the position of having or caring for children when they weren't going to care for them. If a person's only wish was to bring harm to a child, or if their anger was brought about by a child, Tegwen didn't know why they would place themselves around them.
The creatures inside of Newt's case weren't monsters, humans had shown a much scarier side than beasts inside the case. None of them had caused as much damage as what the humans had done. They may have caused structural damage and may have a bit of a nuisance, but they didn't destroy a boy from the inside out.
Mr. Graves was on his feet and Tegwen wanted nothing more than to punch the man in the face but she was sure if she popped into the scene that it would shatter everything that Tina was working to do.
'This man, he is using you," Tina told Credence.
"You tell 'em, Tina," Tegwen muttered.
"Don't listen to her, Credence," Mr. Graves said. " I want you to be free. It's all right."
"That's it.." Tina cooed as Credence became smaller and smaller.
Suddenly, Tegwen's ears caught the sound of movement behind her and turned around Aurors coming onto the scene.
"No! " She placed her hands up. "Don't go in there! It's being handle-"
She was brushed back roughly, completely ignored as if she were invisible, all of them raising their wands in Credence's direction.
"A plant listens to me," Tegwen growled. " A plant listens to me, better than my own kind! That is saying plenty!"
"Shh, don't you frighten him!" Tina begged them to lower their wands. Credence felt threatened instantly and began to swell back up in size, letting out haunting noises that sent shivers up Tegwen's spine.
"Wands down!" Mr. Graves yelled. "Anyone who hurts him will answer to me!"
But the Aurors were under different orders as they ignored the pleading of the people as they unleashed a series of powerful spells in the direction of Credence.
"No!" Tegwen punched the side of the nearest Auror's face, knocking them down, but it was too late. All the other Aurors sent a series of spells that didn't seem to have any effect at first, except for irritating Credence even further.
However, it became too much for the boy to handle as he began to implode turning into a white ball of strong energy. Tegwen pushed her way through the Aurors as Tina, Mr. Graves and Newt backed away from Credence.
"No, this can't...this can't happen...he's just a child. He's just a boy..." Tegwen whispered under her breath as tears began to burn her eyes. Newt and Tina backed until they reached her side. They would have been surprised to see the woman if it weren't for Credence being destroyed in front of their very eyes.
The force sent them all stumbling back as wisps of black trailed off into the air, like smoke. Tina was on the ground sobbing as Tegwen tended to her side, holding onto her and allowing her to cry on her shoulder. It was taking everything in Tegwen not to cry, but she was sure she didn't even have the energy to cry anymore.
Newt rose to his feet, his face stricken with grief over the loss of the boy.
The Aurors moved in quickly on Graves, keeping their wands pointed at him.
"You fools! Do you realize what you've done?"
"The Obscurial was killed on my order, Mr. Graves," Madam Picquery stepped forward, as Tegwen held onto Tina in a protective manner.
Graves seemed extremely upset over Credence, but Tegwen was sure it was for all the wrong reasons.
"He was responsible for the death of a No-Maj,' Madam Picquery explained. "He risked the exposure of our community. He has broken one of our most sacred laws-"
"A law that has us scuttling about like rats!" He began to rant as he looked at all of them in disgust. "I ask all of you, who does the law protect? Us? Or them?"
Madam Picquery didn't want to put up with Mr. Graves any longer as she called for the Aurors to grab him but Graves wasn't going down without a fight.
"Tina, come on, we have to get up," Tegwen said, trying to stand up, but her legs were calling it quits. Her knees burned and her body refused to go on. Tina looked at her, taking her attention of Graves putting up a fight against the Aurors.
She saw how bad of condition that Tegwen was in as looked over at her friend. Tegwen was on her last leg, trying to keep a brave face. She was so thankful to see that Tegwen was okay, even if she wasn't really, especially since it was her fault for dragging Tegwen into the matters in the first place.
"I'm sorry, Tegwen, I'm so sorry for bringing you into all of this," she apologized.
"No, don't be sorry," Tegwen told him. "I'm actually glad that you did."
"Really? Why?"
"I'm not really sure right now, I can't form much of a coherent thought. Just be thankful that I'm still making sense as of right now because that's not going to last long."
An Auror fell back directing the woman's attention back to the scene where Graves was winning, but leave it to Newt to save the day. Tegwen watched as he unleashed the Swooping Evil to shield himself as he raised his wand.
The Swooping Evil wrapped itself around Graves, binding his arms to his side, causing him to drop his wand. Tina was fast and summoned it from his reach.
"Accio!" She grabbed onto it as she stood up and helped Tegwen up to her feet. Tegwen had to lean her body weight against Tina as she found it difficult to stand on her own.
If Newt wasn't full of enough surprises, he had one more up his sleeve as he pointed his wand at Mr. Graves one more time.
"Revelio."
Tegwen would have believed that with the lack of sleep over the last couple of days that she was beginning to hallucinate if it weren't for everyone reacting the same around her as Mr. Graves began to transform. The black hair was replaced with block locks and his eyes became a pale blue that made him look even more menacing.
All around everyone began to mumble Grindelwald as the dark wizard stood before them.
"Merlin," Tegwen held onto Tina's shoulder. "Did you see that coming, because I sure as hell didn't. I'm questioning everything right now...what is life?!"
Tina patted Tegwen's hand, still in a state of shock herself.
"Do you think you can hold me?" Grindelwald questioned the President.
"We'll do our best, Mr. Grindelwald."
"I'm not going to lie," Tegwen whispered to Tina, although, she wasn't whispering at all, but she couldn't differentiate at the time. "But that's not the most comforting. I mean...we escaped..so.. what is that saying?"
"Shh... Tegwen," Tina said placing her hand over the woman's mouth. "I don't think right now is a good time."
"When would be a good time?!" Tegwen said finally collapsing to the floor.
"Tegwen!" Tina knelt down by the woman's side as Newt made his way over in their direction.
"What's wrong?" He asked in alarm to see Tegwen on the ground, caressing the tracks.
"Um...I'm actually not sure," Tina admitted.
"Oh ground, we've been apart for far too long," Tegwen said. "And you are so comfortable! I'm sorry for ever bad-mouthing you in the past because right now..."
"I think she's losing it," Tina said with a worried look.
"I think she's sleep deprived," Newt pointed out before crouching down before Tegwen.
"Twiggy," he called to her in a soft tone. "The ground is no place for you to sleep."
"Just for five minutes," Tegwen yawned. "I think I've earned at least five minutes."
"Twiggy-"
"Four?"
"Twi-"
"Three?"
Newt smiled before helping the woman up to her feet. "I think you deserve more than five minutes, but not on the tracks. Come on, I promise you'll be able to sleep soon."
"You promise?" She yawned." Because you know I'll hold you to it."
"I promise," He chuckled as he wrapped one of her arms around his shoulders to help her up fully while Tina took the other one.
"We just have other matters to attend to first," Tina said. "Like finding Queenie and Jacob."
"Right," Tegwen nodded sleepily. "That's a good idea." She said as they led her to walk.
"But seriously, did either one of you see that coming? I mean, I'm in shock and I can't tell if I'm overreacting because I'm tired!"
She rested her head on Newt's shoulder bringing him to look at her.
"I think your reaction is very appropriate, Twiggy."
"Good," she smiled as her eyes threatened to close, " I didn't want to appear dramatic or anything."
"You dramatic? I don't think that's possible."
