Triggering Toxic Trials and Tribulations

Tegwen remembered the Jarvey that had attacked her first, mainly with insults. But it had not done the damage that led her to spending time in St Mungo's. No, it was what attacked her after that had scarred her, even into adulthood.

The Nundu was a creature that Tegwen was all too familiar with, for all the wrong reasons, although, she had never actually encountered one face to face. The creature resembled something similar to a leopard with the tinge of yellow fur and the black spots that were speckled about. But it was so much more menacing than the distant relative. The large mane of the creature burst open with its thorny appearance, letting out a loud roar that caused Tegwen to become paralyzed with fear. Her mind immediately brought her back to the moment where she had found herself experiencing the most painful injuries of her life.

The creature was known to be one of the most dangerous creatures in the world, similar to that of dragons, it was difficult to subdue, if not, near-impossible, even with the use of magic.  She remembered hearing that even a hundred wizards would probably have to be present to subdue one and walking away without injury would be a miracle. Besides the feline creature, being quite large and dangerous just in its appearance, it's breath was worse than it's bite. The breath of a Nundu was toxic and full of diseases that could kill a person no problem. If Tegwen had been attacked by a real Nundu, she surely would have been dead.

At least, that's what the Healers at St. Mungo's had told her fathers when everyone in her room thought she was asleep, trying to recover from her injuries. It had been a sheer panic when she awoke and found herself in a completely different environment than before. She could remember the yells and shouts of the professors, she could also hear Newt's voice. Not once did she hear Leta calling out in shock or apologizing for what she had done. She obviously didn't care and she obviously hadn't suffered the consequences of her actions, because Newt took the blame.

The mist.

Tegwen remembered the mist that had encased her body as if a large beast had just sneezed on her. It had also knocked her back as if she had just struck with knockback jinx only adding to her pain as she landed right on her back.  The feeling of the mist trickle all over her body, stinging as it settled into the pores of her skin.

She writhed in pain clenching her teeth tightly to keep herself from biting down at her tongue, but eventually she had to scream out. The pain was becoming too much, it was like her entire body had been set on fire with no means of escape. She called out for help as much as she could, until the time came where everything went black.

When she woke up in St. Mungo's, the first thing she witnessed were her fathers crying by her bedside, terrified that she wouldn't make it through the night. Her body was wrapped up as the draught she had been given, along with so many other remedies were slowly working to repair her body. She felt so weak and scared at the same time, completely unaware of what had taken place.

She hadn't seen anything attack, she had only felt it.

Later on in the middle of her recovery, Tegwen learned exactly what had happened to her. Apparently, Leta had been experimenting to recreate the breath of Nundu. Why she had been attempting such a thing, was beyond Tegwen. But the girl had been brewing it and attempting to hide it in the Charms Classroom that particular evening while she worked. She kept it under a sheet to contain it while working and Tegwen had been stupid enough to investigate it.

Newt obviously knew what his friend had been up to because he had tried to prevent Tegwen from approaching it, but he was the one who ended up tripping, dragging the sheet with him. The mist escaped and attacked Tegwen full on striking her with the toxins. Leta had come quite close to recreating the breath and perhaps if she had some more time without Tegwen's interruption, she would have succeeded.

Tegwen was in a state of shock upon waking up, disturbed by the fact that one of her classmates had no problem unleashing something on her that could have potentially killed her. But what really shocked the girl was knowing that Leta wasn't punished for what she had done.

Newt was placed on trial and expelled from Hogwarts before she had even woke up in St. Mungo's, leaving her unable to argue it. She tried to go to Headmaster Dippet and even to Professor Dumbledore, but there was no arguing any of it as Newt had taken the blame. He claimed all responsibilities to it while Leta denied any involvement.

The girl was simply punished for being out of the dorms after curfew and then claimed that Tegwen was just getting everything mixed up because of the accident messing with her memory. She claimed that Tegwen never liked her beforehand and was just looking for a reason to get the girl in trouble.

Tegwen tried to argue, but it went nowhere. Suddenly, her name was being mixed up with Leta, who wasn't exactly known for carrying a great reputation around the castle. Rumours started to spread and people believed that Tegwen had been a part of the experiment and when it went wrong, she tried to cover it up and claim she was attacked. Some even claimed that Tegwen deserved what happened to her without fully knowing what exactly had happened.

She couldn't argue her way out of it, no matter how hard she tried.

Newt looked around after settling the Occamy back in their nest and going to lead Jacob and Tegwen to move on to the next round, however, as he turned he sat that Tegwen was no longer among them.

"Where did she go?" He asked Jacob.

Jacob glanced up at him from where he was staring at the Ocammy babies. "Where did who go?"

"Twiggy!" Newt said before walking off.

Jacob remained with a puzzled look. "I thought her name was Tegwen. Have I been calling her by the wrong name in my head this entire time?"

The man didn't have to travel far to find Tegwen frozen in place, standing parallel to the Nundu. All color was drained from the young woman's face as she seemed frozen in her spot, staring at the creature. From where he stood, Newt could see how badly she was shaking in fear. His chest felt suddenly a million times heavier as guilt weighed down on his heart to see so much fear in one person.

Tegwen had been a shy being, back in Hogwarts, he often remembered the girl sitting in the back of the classroom, mainly reading to herself. He was quite surprised when he learned that she had become a prefect during their fifth year, mainly because she wasn't as loud as the other prefects who certainly didn't have any problem with scolding other students or getting them into trouble. Tegwen didn't seem like the type and she certainly made that clear when she allowed him to head back to the dorms that evening when he was caught out after curfew.

He would have listened if it weren't for Leta being out as well. She had informed him to meet her at the Charms classroom, but he wasn't expecting Tegwen to be there when he arrived.

The sounds of her cries of pain filled his mind until he shut his eyes to block them out. When he opened them again, he moved forward rapidly and pulled Tegwen back by her shoulders, away from the Nundu.

Tegwen didn't blink nor did she speak even to tell him to stop touching her as he expected she would. There was a distant look in her eyes, notifying him that she wasn't fully aware of what was going on around her. She seemed to stuck in a trance triggered by seeing the Nundu so close. He knew why she was terrified, after all, the Nundu , not the one he had specifically but the creature itself was responsible somewhat for what occurred.

"Twiggy," he called to her, waving one of his hands back and forth in front of her face. Jacob arrived at their side and looked at the woman in concern.

"She doesn't look so good. Did something bite her too?" He asked rubbing the side of his neck. The poultice still had yet to dry, as he got some on his fingers. He quickly wiped it on the front of his trousers with a small look of disgust.

"No, something didn't bite her," Newt said before grabbing the sides of Tegwen's face. "Tegwen, Tegwen..."

He tapped one side gently but she didn't budge, it was almost as if she had become petrified.

"Twiggy! Look at me!" He raised his voice.

Tegwen's body flinched at the sound of his voice and her eyes blinked once before she met his gaze. She seemed rather confused in the moment as she no longer found herself in front of the Nundu anymore but rather before Newt. She turned her head slightly that still rested in his hands and saw Jacob staring at her. Moving her head back while taking a step, Tegwen lifted up a hand to her head, feeling the headache from hell return to unleash its wrath. Rather than looking around for somewhere to sit, the woman just sat down on the floor as she was beginning to feel dizzy and nauseous.

"She really isn't looking to good right now," Jacob pointed out. "I'm not a medical expert or anything, but maybe you should splash some water on her face or something."

Newt knelt down before Tegwen before looking over his shoulder at the man. "I don't think splashing water on her face is going to help much in this situation."

"Like I said, I'm not a medical expert."

"I don't need water," Tegwen finally spoke bringing both men to look back at her. "I need...I need....water...water...I need to water my plant." She said softly.

Newt stared at her for a moment before nodding his head slowly. "Alright, actually, I think you might need to just sit here for a little while longer, Twiggy. I'm sure your plant will be just fine in your absence."

"But what if it gets thirsty?" She asked.

The woman was in a state of shock brought on by seeing the creature behind them, but he was okay with her just talking about her plant for the time being if it meant she was talking.

"I think it'll be fine in the meantime, plants have been known to be quite sturdy," he said with a small smile.

"I should have watered it before I left, that poor, poor plant and it smelled so good," Tegwen sighed.

"Look, we can go and water your plant!" Newt told her as he became exasperated.

Suddenly, he moved back a little bit as her eyes lit up and her expression brightened. "We can? You promise?"

Newt turned to Jacob, who shrugged his shoulders. "You're the one who said it, not me."

Newt let out a little sigh before he nodded his head once again and looked back to Tegwen.

"Yes, Twiggy, I promise, once we are finished here, we can go water your plant. Now, why don't you just sit here and relax and Jacob and I will take care of what we have to around here."

"Okay," she said without protest.

He stood back up and instructed Jacob to follow him to get some work done.

"Hey, that was a nice thing you did back there," Jacob told him, giving Newt a small clap on the shoulder. "I think you made her feel a lot better about...about her plant."

Newt gave a small grin to himself as he continued to face forward.

"It was the least I could do for her after all she's been through."
