Thunder Buddies for Life
Helping Tegwen through the subway tunnel, the group made their way past the Aurors, while Tegwen continued to fight staying away. However, she seemed to become a bit more alert when they came upon Queenie and Jacob.
"You two are alive!" She said happily leaving Tina and Newt to wrap her arms around Jacob and Queenie. The way she was acting, it seemed she hadn't seen the two in years, but they were just as happy to see her as they hugged her in return. "You two wouldn't believe what just happened. It was insane, I am just beside myself right now."
"Are you okay, honey?" Queenie asked her with a slightly worried look.
"Twiggy needs a nap," Newt pointed out and everyone seemed to understand from that point on and just allowed the woman to ramble on. Queenie wrapped her arms around her sister while Jacob walked over to Newt, holding out the man's suitcase.
"I figured somebody oughta keep on eye on this thing," Jacob told him as Newt took it back happily.
"Thank you," Newt said in a humble, yet grateful tone as he held the suitcase close to him.
Madam Picquery approached the group with a stern look on her face, causing all of them to become uneasy, except for Tegwen, who was lost in a moment in her head from the lack of sleep. However, Newt placed her behind him in a protective manner and moved his suitcase to his side, preparing himself for the woman's orders or whatever she had to say.
"We owe you an apology, Mr. Scamander," Madam Picquery began, looking physically pained that she had to apologize and admit that she was wrong, but Newt wasn't about to let her get off that easily.
He cleared his throat, cutting the woman off and made a motion with his eyes and nodded his head in Tegwen's direction, along with the rest of the group that had been through hell and back. Madam Picquery didn't pick up on the hint that she owed the entire group an apology for MACUSA's actions against them.
"But the magical community is exposed," She looked directly at Tegwen that gave her a look in return.
"I'm sorry," Tegwen said looking to Jacob, "but is she complaining right now?"
Jacob hid his smile behind his hand before they turned back to the woman.
"We cannot obliviate an entire city!"
"Well not with that kind of attitude!" Tegwen called out before Queenie and Tina placed their hands over her mouth to keep her from getting into further trouble.
After a moment of passing silence, Newt seemed to think of something before he looked at the president.
"Actually, I think we can," He said in a confident tone.
"That's the spirit!" Tegwen clapped her hands together.
Moving forward, Newt stood beneath the large hole that had been blown through the tunnel by the Obscurus explosion and placed his case down. As soon as he opened it, Frank the Thunderbird flew out, spreading his wings and hovering above them. Everyone seemed to be in awe of Frank as they looked on to see Newt approach the creature.
"Could you imagine the bird feeder fit for him?" Tegwen asked Jacob. The man snorted loudly before petting the top of the woman's head.
"I was intending to wait until we got to Arizona," Newt said looking at the Thunderbird with a longing look. "But it seems now that you're our only hope, Frank."
Newt embraced the creature like a parent would sending their child off on their first day of school.
"I'll miss you," he told Frank before they embraced. Everyone watched in silence as Newt dug into his pocket and pulled out a vial before throwing it up into the air for Frank to snatch up in his beak.
Frank let out a sharp cry that pierced the ears of anyone within a mile radius before it shot out of the hole and soared into the sky.
Tegwen placed her head all the way back so she could watch the magnificent creature ascend.
"This is...amazing," she said to herself before Newt returned to her side. She felt him grab her hand and give it a squeeze but she was too preoccupied with the clouds darkening overhead with thunder clapping and lightning flashing.
Frank disappeared and as there was a bright burst of light, and then the rain began to fall.
The Aurors began to move about to perform their duties of repairing the city when Tegwen felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around to see the Auror from the earlier, who looked beaten, tired, and slightly pissed.
"Oh...hi there," Tegwen gave him a small wave. The man didn't say anything but held his hand out to her. "Right.."
She handed him back his wand with a sheepish grin. "Thanks again for letting me borrow it," she said.
The man grunted before snatching the wand out of her hand and walking away. Everyone looked at her, leaving her cheeks to turn a bright pink.
"It's a rather long and weird story," She said. "I'll explain later."
The group made their way back to the Subway platform, all of them at ease, knowing that the chaos was over finally.
"They won't remember anything," Newt said to Madam Picquery to reassure the woman. "That venom has incredibly powerful Obliviate properties."
Tegwen's thoughts drifted back to the little boy named Paul that brought her to smile, because even though he wouldn't remember fully, he would still be able to dream about it. That gave her a tiny glimmer of hope that things would start to get better for both halves of society.
"We owe you a great debt, Mr. Scamander," Madam Picquery said. " Now get that case out of New York."
"Yes, Madam President."
"And you," the woman looked to Tegwen. "That plant of yours..."
"You mean Freud?"
"I don't care what its name is, I just want it out of here," she said.
Tegwen nodded her head. " I don't think he's much of a city plant anyways," she shrugged. 'Although, he certainly would have solved the rat problem around here."
Newt smiled with a small laugh as the President walked away, however, she came to a stop and Queenie protectively placed herself in front of Jacob.
"Is that No-Maj still here?" She asked looking right at Jacob. "Obliviate him, there can be no exceptions!"
"But that's not fair!" Tegwen protested. "He helped us, he did-"
"I'm sorry, but even one witness...you know the law."
No one seemed to agree with what the woman said, but they really were left with no choice as the president left them to say goodbye.
Jacob faced the group, braving a small smile for all of them, despite the fact that he was fighting back his own tears. It was obvious that none of them wanted to say goodbye. In such a short amount of time, they had become somewhat of a small family. Tegwen didn't have many friends to begin with and often struggled to make them, but she had found a good friend in Jacob, that was something she didn't want to lose.
Queenie looked the most devastated out of them all as she looked at him, fighting back her tears with every part of her.
"I was never supposed to know any of this," Jacob told them in attempts to comfort them, but no one was feeling it in that moment. "Everybody knows Newt only kept me around to...hey Newt, why did you keep me around?"
"Because I like you," Newt answered honestly. " Because you're my friend and I'll never forget how you helped me, Jacob."
"Oh," Jacob looked beyond touch in the moment before Queenie made her way towards him. Tegwen looked away, burying her face into Newt's arm. She didn't want to watch the two say goodbye, she didn't want to say goodbye at all.
Newt lifted his hand and rubbed her shoulder back and forth gently as Queenie offered to go with Jacob, because she knew she wouldn't find anyone like him. But Jacob argued saying she would find someone better, before claiming he had to go.
Tegwen turned her head back to see Jacob wiping his own tears, which finally caused her to cry as well. It seemed everyone was tearing up as Jacob took a step towards the rain.
"Jacob!" Newt called after him.
"It's okay," Jacob told them in a soft voice. "It's okay...it's just like waking up, right?"
Jacob was being strong for them, so the four knew it was only right that they had to be strong for him as well. They placed smiles on and nodded their heads as he walked out into the rain. However, Queenie had one final goodbye as she stepped out with her magical umbrella and walked over to him, pulling him into a kiss.
When she pulled away and stepped back, it was their cue that they had to leave from that area as they apparated away, leaving Jacob alone in the rain.
After the crazed adventures in New York, Tegwen realized that while she needed to get Freud out of the city, she needed to get out of the city herself. She no longer wanted to hide away in her little flat and just busy herself with work to avoid people. But she did want to go home and see her fathers, she was sure that they had received all sorts of confusing information in such a short amount of time.
They probably had a million questions that she wouldn't be able to answer in her letters, it was better to do so in person.
However, in order to leave New York, she had to find Freud first.
"You said he beat the Auror?" Newt asked her in alarm as she walked through the streets. Tina decided to bring Queenie home in order to rest for a bit, while Newt offered to help her. Without her wand, Tegwen was feeling slightly useless in her search until Newt helped her.
"He didn't beat him...he just...you know..."
"Beat him?" Newt said bringing her to chuckle.
"Well, it was a good thing he did," She said, " I probably would have been brought back to the Death Cell."
"And what exactly happened to your wand?"
"A refrigerator fell on it," Tegwen answered casually.
"At what point was it raining refrigerators?" Newt asked.
"Like I said, it's a long story."
"Well, I guess we'll just save it for the boat ride, won't we?" Newt said with a smile.
"We?" She questioned looking over her shoulder at him. "What do you mean we? Why are you taking the boat? I don't have a wand and-"
"You said it was a long story, Twiggy, you can't expect me to not want to hear it now."
"But..." The woman jumped as a trash can on the curb moved and a rat ran straight across her path.
"Relax, it's just a rat," Newt told her but Tegwen didn't respond as she raised a brow and walked over to the trash can.
Newt watched with an alarmed look on his face as she lifted the lid and smiled.
"Ah, there you are," she said before reaching into the trash. Newt grimaced until he saw her lift the small plant that was Freud into her hands.
"What...what was he doing in all that rubbish?" He asked.
"Hunting probably," Tegwen said with a small shrug. "I think he's taking a liking to the rats. We'll have to find you something else to eat when I take you home, Freud, perhaps you enjoy some field mice or gnomes. You'll help Dad out quite a bit since he absolutely despising degnoming the garden."
She let out a tired yawn before Newt linked arms with her.
"Come on, Twiggy, I think you are deserving of a long nap," he told her. "Let me take you back to your place."
Newt couldn't even convince Tegwen to get in her bed as she settled right onto the sofa in her living room upon their arrival. In a matter of minutes, she drifted off into a deep sleep as Newt took Freud and placed the plant back in its pot before giving it plenty of water. Pickett peeked out from Newt's coat and peered down at Freud before crawling down and resting by the creature before settling in the pot.
"Eh, I would be careful about this friendship, Pickett," Newt warned, however, Freud seemed to enjoy the company as it made a little noise and rested with Pickett. "Or...not."
Unsure of what else to do in the moment, Newt wanted to keep an eye on Pickett and Freud to make sure nothing happened, but he needed to sit down too. His body hated him for not resting sooner as he sat down on the sofa near Tegwen's head.
She stirred slightly and peered up at him.
"You should go back to sleep," he told her leaning his head back.
'But I have a question..." Tegwen asked before she yawned again.
"And it can't wait until after your nap?"
"No."
"Fine," he smirked. "What's the question?"
"Why do you call me Twiggy?"
Newt smiled as he closed his eyes.
"It's a long story, Twiggy."
