The Breeding Ground for Awkward Moments
Tina had the plan of bringing the group back to her home, although, it seemed she was hesitant about the idea because it involved bringing the men around her sister, Queenie. Tegwen actually looked up to Queenie, or perhaps she just looked up to the Goldstein sisters in general. Mainly because they were strong women who knew how to handle themselves with confidence and poise. Whereas Tegwen was the poster child for awkwardness as she made it obvious on several occasions in the presence of the opposite sex. Queenie was more of the soft-spoken one of the Goldstein sisters, with a sweet tone to her voice and always wearing a welcoming smile. The one that usually made men weak in the knees and open to her every wish.
The only person Tegwen could bring to their knees was herself and that was usually from tripping her over her two feet.
As they arrived at Brownstone Street, Tegwen's natural graces kicked in as the street curb finally took its revenge on the woman. She managed to lose her balance and let go of Tina's arm before she dragged her down with her. Falling into the empty road, Tegwen let out a painful groan as she scraped her hands against the pavement.
Her face turned warm and bright red from the embarrassment of falling in front of everyone. Footsteps approached and a hand was extended towards her to take. She half-expected it to be Tina, and wholeheartedly hoped it was Tina, but instead as she glanced up, she saw Newt looking down at her.
He kept the offer of his hand out, waiting for her to take it.
"Come on, take it," he insisted, an almost pleading tone to his voice.
"No, thank you," Tegwen grumbled pushing herself up. "I am fully capable of getting myself up on my own-"
Tegwen's body didn't seem to agree with her statement as her ankle rolled and brought her back down to the ground.
"Lovely," she sighed before blowing a lock of hair out of her face.
"Are you alright, Tegwen?" Tina called to her.
"Just fine," Tegwen said carefully pushing herself up as she widened her stance to give her better balance. She stood up straight with a triumphant look on her face before she straightened her jumper. "See? Fully capable."
"I never doubted you for a moment," Newt said retracting his hand slowly. Tegwen waited until the others crossed the street before her face contorted to show the pain she was in. She let out several curses under her breath as she pointed both hands in the direction of her ankle.
Newt realized they were one short as they approached the building helping Tina hold up Jacob, only to turn around and catching a bit of what Tegwen was saying and doing, only to have his eyes widen.
"Mugglerfuc-"
He cleared his throat loudly to stop her from cursing any further, bringing her to look up at him.
"Coming, Twiggy?" He called out to her.
Her eyes narrowed in his direction. "It's Tegwen!"
"Is it?" Newt said with a feigned expression of confusion. "I'm sorry, I don't know anyone by that name. Do we know each other?"
Tegwen bit the inside of her cheek and she forced herself to walk on her injured ankle to get away from him.
"No, we don't, Mr. Salamander."
"It's Scamander," he corrected her.
"Sorry, I can't hear you from all the way over here, Mr. Salamander!"
The man made a face as she was only a couple of feet from him as she claimed that she couldn't hear him.
"You might want to consider cleaning out your ears then."
Tegwen approached the spot where Tina was still standing, struggling with Jacob as the bite mark on his neck was looking even worse. She continued to ignore the pain in her ankle, even though she was internally screaming in that moment as Newt came to stand with them.
"Okay, before we go in,I'm not supposed to have men on the premises," Tina said giving a knowing look in Tegwen's direction.
"In that case, Mr. Kowalski and I can easily seek other accommodation-"
"That's a great idea!" Tegwen piped up. "A great, great, great...actually, a fantastic idea."
Newt and Tina looked at her while Jacob let out a painful groan.
"That's a terrible idea, Tegwen," Tina told her before they headed up the steps into the building. Newt looked back at Tegwen and shook his head.
"Terrible, Tegwen."
She glared in his direction. "Hush up. You just realize that you just called your own idea terrible as well," she informed him as she walked away.
Newt's brows furrowed for a moment as he looked after. "Wait...no, I didn't."
"Did too!"
Tina had them tiptoe up the stairs carefully towards her apartment when a voice called out.
"That you, Tina?" A woman's voice rang in their ears.
"Yes, Mrs. Esposito," Tina called back.
"Are you alone?"
"I'm always alone, Mrs. Esposito!" Tina said in an exasperated tone. Tegwen placed her hand on the woman's shoulder and gave it a small pat.
"That's not something you should yell out, Tina," Tegwen told her. "No judgment, though."
They made their way to the door that Tina opened and hurried them along inside. Instantly, Tegwen spotted Queenie in the next room, tending to a dress.
"Tegwen, you've come for a visit!" The woman said happily with a smile before she spotted her sister and the two men. "Teenie- you brought men home?"
Tina looked frustrated as Jacob looked as though he was in the presence of a goddess.
Unsure of how long they were going to be there, Tegwen couldn't stand anymore as she limped over to the nearest sofa and sat down to rest her ankle. She pushed aside the laundry that was settled on the back of the sofa and rested her head back while closing her eyes. She was exhausted and on top of that, the events of the day had definitely brought her to burn through the pastries from earlier, leaving her hungry again.
"You did quite a number to your ankle out there, didn't you?" Newt's voice was directed to her. She glanced over to see him standing by the windows and peeking through the curtains in an anxious manner.
"No, I'm fine," She insisted looking away.
"Yes, because most ankles look swollen and discolored."
"I didn't realize you were suddenly an expert on ankles."
"I didn't realize you were this stubborn," he countered.
Suddenly, their conversation was cut short as Jacob flopped back onto the sofa beside Tegwen.
"You need to sit down, honey," Queenie said to the man. "Hey...he hasn't eaten all day...and...aw that's rough. He didn't get the money he wanted for his bakery. You bake, honey? I love to cook."
Tegwen remembered what she had said to the man earlier about him opening his own bakery and inwardly facepalmed at her past comment.
"You're a Legilimens?" Newt asked Queenie.
"No, she's just really good at guessing games," Tegwen scoffed quietly.
"Uh-huh, yeah. But I always have trouble with your kind," Queenie said with a smile as she looked at him and then to Tegwen." Brits, it's the accents."
Placing her face into the palm of her hand, Tegwen closed her eyes once more and decided to drown out the voices around her as her mind and body ached something fierce. Her mind drifted off to the idea of crawling into her bed and hiding under her covers for the rest of eternity. That was until there was a mentioning of food.
With Tina and Queenie preparing dinner, Tegwen excused herself to head to the washroom to tend to her ankle in private, not wanting to give Newt the satisfaction of watching her heal. She sat on the edge of the tub after closing the door behind her and pulled out her wand. She pressed it against the injury and muttered out the incantation, feeling a slight twinge before relief.
"Sweet Merlin," she sighed rubbing at her forehead. She debated whether to just hang out in the room for the remainder of the evening, but she knew that wouldn't go over well. Picking herself up, she walked over to the mirror to see that she looked like absolute hell in that moment. Her hair was a mess, her face was oily, she looked as though she was developing bags under her eyes. She caught glimpse of her eyes in her reflection and quickly averted her gaze from the discoloration that was staring back at her.
"Glad to see I'm holding up well," she said before looking at the palms of her hands that were red from where she had fallen earlier on the pavement.
She quickly healed her hands before heading out of the washroom and back into the living room only to see that dinner was set and ready. Queenie invited her over to sit, of course, placing her beside Newt. The smells were intoxicating and pulling Tegwen to go sit down, but she remained in place.
"I really should be heading home-"
"Nonsense, Tegwen," Queenie said walking over and gently guiding her to her seat. Tegwen dragged her feet but despite Queenie's angelic like appearance, the woman had a death grip. Rather than fight it, Tegwen settled down at the table that was lit up with candles.
Even though she was hungry, she really didn't want to eat in that moment as she could sense Newt looking over at her.
In the beginning, they mostly ate in silence, with the exception of Queenie and Jacob talking back and forth, or rather obviously flirting. Tegwen poked around at her food when she caught sight of movement from the corner of her left eye. She turned her head slightly to see something moving on Newt's coat. Tilting her head, she squinted her eyes trying to get a better look at whatever it was as she neglected the conversation around her.
Newt suddenly jumped up from the table, pushing his chair back causing Tegwen to jump. He walked around to stand behind his chair.
"Miss Goldstein, I think Mr. Kowalski could do with an early night. And besides you and I need to be up early tomorrow morning to find my niffler," he said.
Queenie looked around in confusion. " What's a niffler?"
"Don't ask," Tina told her before looking to the men. "Okay, you guys can bunk here."
Tegwen saw it as the moment she would be allowed to leave but as she gathered herself to thank them for the meal and go, but she was stopped as Newt called to her.
"Do you mind if I talk to you?"
"Yes," she answered. "I would. I would mind."
She turned back to Tina. "I'm going to head home-"
"What? No, you need to stay the night. First thing in the morning-"
"I can come back in the morning, I should really head home..I..I have a plant that needs watering," Her excuse sounded even dumber out loud.
"Don't be silly, Tegwen," Queenie said. "You can stay here, we can share my bed. After all, you and I have plenty of catching up to do. I want to hear all about your travels in Giant Country."
"Yes but-"
Queenie walked over and grabbed Tegwen's hand gently pulling her along to the back bedroom.
"You seemed awfully tense during dinner, honey, are you feeling alright?" Queenie asked Tegwen as she sat on the woman's bed.
"Yes, I'm fine," Tegwen lied. "It's just been a rather long day is all."
"It has nothing to do with Mr. Scamander out there? Seems as though he really wanted to talk to you earlier."
"Well, I didn't want to talk to him, simple as that."
"I don't think it's as simple as you say," Queenie said sitting beside her. Tegwen scooted as the woman's revealing nightgown was practically flashing her in the face. She turned her head and looked at the door.
"You're right," she sighed," it's not as simple. It's actually really complicated and I rather not discuss it anymore."
"Maybe you should talk to him, though, Ma always said it was best to get things off your chest. Makes for a better night of sleep," Queenie patted the top of Tegwen's head. "And you look like you could use a good night of sleep, Tegwen."
"Thaanks, Queenie. Your honesty is always appreciated."
Taking Queenie's advice, Tegwen slipped out of the room and made her way down the hall to where the men were staying. She had no plans of letting Newt talk to her, but she knew she had plenty to say to him. If she were able to get all of it, perhaps she would allow herself to feel better.
She stood outside the door, readying to knock when she heard an odd sound coming from the other side.
Opening the door, the woman's eyes widened as she saw Jacob, trying to stuff himself into Newt's suitcase, with Newt nowhere in sight.
The two adults stared at each other for a brief moment in silence. Jacob cleared his throat.
"Be honest with me,"Jacob began, " does this suitcase make me look fat?"
