Making the MACUSA Naughty List
Tegwen seemed to be on a high since the encounter with the Erumpent in Central Park. She had a bright smile on her face as she ignored how cold she still was until she felt her coat heating up. Turning around, she saw Newt with his wand up, using the Hot-Air charm to warm her arm, along with Jacob. She gave him a little smile before turning to Jacob, who seemed to be in shock.
"That was one of the craziest if not the craziest thing I've ever experienced in my life!" Jacob said as Newt moved on to get the Erumpent situated in her habitat. "Did you see me dodge it? I don't think I've run that fast since I was a boy. But I...I was moving!
"You were great out there, Jacob, really, you have plenty to pride yourself in," Tegwen said. "Most wizards and witches would have panicked in that situation, but you're a muggle and handled your own. Good for you!"
She gave him a hug in congratulations to his athletic abilities not to be pinned down by a sexually aroused beast.
"A muggle?" Jacob said pulling away for a moment." I thought I was a No-Maj?"
"It's the same thing," She informed him. "Although, I much prefer calling you a muggle, No-Maj sounds so negative."
Jacob smiled. "I agree, I've been told No all my life, I'll take muggle."
"That's gre-" Before she could finish, the walls began to shake and one of the vials crashed to the floor, spilling pills everywhere to the floor.
Newt came running back with an accusing look as he looked in the direction of the two. Jacob pointed at Tegwen who glanced over at the man.
"Hey! It wasn't me!" She said smacking Jacob's hand away. "I don't-"
The walls shook again, almost as if they were experiencing a small earthquake.
"What's going on?" Tegwen questioned. Newt didn't answer and quickly made his way to the stairs to find that they were locked into the case.
"Someone locked us in here," Newt said grabbing his wand to open it, but the shaking came to an end abruptly. Then the sound of the lock opening sounded in their ears.
Tegwen looked incredibly worried and Jacob looked highly confused, leaving Newt to be the first one to exit when the case opened. Newt disappeared as he climbed out before Tegwen motioned Jacob to follow. When she stepped out of the suitcase, she found herself in front of the MACUSA and dignitaries from all over. She let out a whimper, wishing to jump back into the suitcase. She looked over to see Tina standing there, looking slightly guilty, obviously the one who had brought them there. Although, she seemed to question why Tegwen was with him.
"Scamander?" They looked over to the Minister of Magic sitting close to them. Tegwen immediately turned red in the face.
"Oh, er...hello, Minister," Newt greeted the man as he closed his case over. Suddenly, the topic of Newt's older brother, Theseus, was brought up. The decorated war hero that Tegwen remembered seeing in the papers plenty. Newt claimed that he was really in New York to purchase an Appaloosa Puffskein, before the Minister looked over in Tegwen's direction.
"Ms. Gittins?"
"Oh no," she whimpered as she faced the Minister with an uneasy smile.
"I was just talking to your father the other day at a quidditch match, he said you were out in Giant Country," he said.
"Um well...you see, I was, but I finished my trip there and came-"
"Came back to cause trouble?"
The woman looked down at her feet like a scolded child.
"Goldstein,"Madam Picquery called out in an agitated voice. "Who is this?"
"This is Jacob Kowalski, Madame President," Tina informed the woman. "He's a No-Maj who got bitten by one of Mr. Scamander's creatures."
Tegwen turned to her friend, begging her not to go any further at the risk of getting them all in trouble. But it was too late as all the officials in the room became alarmed at the fact that a No-Maj was in their presence.
"Yeah, I really prefer being called a muggle now," Jacob whispered to Tegwen nervously. The woman placed her hand on the man's shoulder to comfort him, although she was shaking from the sight of Senator Shaw's body floating about in the room.
She looked away, trying to ignore all the commotion around her. Jacob placed his hand over hers and gave it a few gentle pats, unsure of who needed the comfort more in that moment.
"No creature did this!" Newt suddenly called out, looking irritated at the accusation of his creatures being responsible for what happened to Shaw. "Don't pretend! You must know what that was, look at those marks. That was an Obscurus."
That seemed to do the trick of royally pissing off Madam Picquery as she called for Newt's case to be confiscated by Mr. Graves. She took a step forward as she saw the panicked look on Newt's face but Jacob held her hand, squeezing it as a warning.
"No! Give that b-" Newt began to cry out, but he was drowned out by Madam Picquery calling out for their arrest.
The force of the restraining spell sent Tegwen to her knees, causing her legs to cry out in pain as Newt called for them not to hurt his creatures. The amount of pain in his tone was enough to nearly bring the woman to tears. He sounded like a frantic parent that was having his children taken from him.
"No! No! Don't you hurt those creatures! There is nothing dangerous in there!"
Madam Picquery was not in the mood to listen to his pleading cries as she demanding they be taken to the cells.
"You can't do that!" Tegwen snapped at the woman and suddenly became surprised by her sudden outburst. Newt continued to call out for his creatures not to be harmed when the woman approached to where Tegwen was being dragged away.
"You're in enough trouble without this incident on your shoulders, Ms. Gittins," Madam Picquery told her.
Tegwen's eyes narrowed in confusion. "But..but I...I didn't-"
"You didn't allow a No-Maj boy to walk away with memory of running into a beast on the streets of New York!?"
Tegwen thought back to the boy from the "gas explosion" and looked down to the floor. "He was just a boy, he wouldn't-"
"You put our world at risk for exposure willingly!"
"No, I didn't! At least, I didn't mean to, I just-"
Madam Picquery spun around and walked away from her as they were dragged off.
"Please! Please don't hurt my creatures!" Newt cried. "They are not dangerous! Please, they are not dangerous!"
The cell was cold and Tegwen couldn't believe how horrible things had become in a matter of minutes. She sat in the corner staring into the distance, not knowing what the outcome was going to be for all of them. She knew Jacob would be obliviated, but their lives were up in the air. She rubbed her face, trying to think of how her fathers were going to react to the news. She had promised the two that she would keep out of trouble, with the exception of what troubles came with her job, but getting in trouble with MACUSA was definitely not part of her job.
Drawing her legs into her chest, Tegwen rested her head on her knees as Tina broke the silence, her voice quivering as she was on the verge of tears.
"I am so sorry about your creatures, Mr. Scamander. I truly am."
Jacob brought up the question of the Obscurus and Tegwen decided she had heard enough as she clapped her hands over her ears to sit in silence. Once again, she had screwed herself over by not minding her business. Her mind returned back to her fathers, dreading the idea of them finding out what she had done. They had already been through enough with Tegwen nearly giving them several heart attacks in her lifetime.
Seeing them cry was enough to break her heart, but knowing she wouldn't be there to comfort them when they got the news. She held her breath as she felt the lump develop in her throat. Unlike Tina, she wasn't able to hold back her tears as she began to cry into her sleeves.
She felt a soft hand touch her shoulder, bringing her to look up. "Tegwen, I'm so sorry-"
"Don't stand there," Tegwen told Tina, "I can't see you."
"Oh sorry," Tina moved to kneel in front of her, she placed her hands on Tegwen's knees, but Tegwen didn't look at her right away.
"I don't want to talk about this any further, Tina, really...I don't. I don't even understand why you did this. You couldn't just leave this be!" Tegwen said angrily. Tina backed away from her with an apologetic look.
"I didn't-"
"You did this so you could get your position back and look where it left us! We're stuck in a cell...you're no better off than you were before, in fact, you matters worse for yourself and everyone else around you! I didn't want to be part of this! I was going to go get lunch if you don't remember? But instead you dragged me along, I tried to leave on several occasions but you kept guilting me back in calling me a witness. Then I somehow got invested in all of this...I actually ended up caring about what was going on...and where has that gotten me? On the MACUSA naughty list! That's where!"
"Naughty list?" Jacob repeated but Newt shook his head, urging him not to say anything.
"I don't even care about myself in this situation but my fathers don't even have the faintest clue as to what's going on and the creatures are in danger...you're all in trouble, we have no idea what they're going to do....and Freudrick is probably going to be thirsty soon."
"She's becoming hysterical, I think," Jacob whispered to Newt.
"You think?" Newt said before walking over. He sat down beside her, causing her to sigh.
"That's her bad side," Tina whispered to him.
"Bad side?" Newt raised a brow.
"She's partially blind in that eye."
Newt froze, suddenly figuring out what the dark part in Tegwen's eye was. It blocked part of her view bringing him to frown.
"Wh-wh..." He thought back to the incident at Hogwarts before moving to be in Tegwen's view.
"Was...was it from...the..."
"No!" Tegwen said sharply. "It didn't happen back at Hogwarts if that's what you're thinking."
"Is she a mind reader too?" Jacob asked.
Everyone looked over at him. "I don't know these things!"
"No, I'm not," Tegwen answered him in a kinder tone. "It was from my own stupid doing, just like everything else in my life...I do something stupid and the consequences are..."
She snapped her fingers. "Immediate."
She sighed and rested her head back against the wall. "I'm sorry, Tina, I really didn't mean to yell at you and I didn't mean what I sa-"
"No, don't apologize for what you said, Tegwen. You were right...I thought...I thought I could work my way back. I thought this would get me back on MACUSA's good side. But I wasn't thinking about anyone but myself. I'm so sorry, I know you didn't want to get involved."
"I was already involved...as soon as I saw..." She turned her head and looked at Newt. "You."
The cell fell quiet for awhile and somehow, Tegwen managed to fall asleep, but she was sure it was due to just pure exhaustion. She used her coat as a blanket and rested her head against the cold wall.
"Do you know what the incident was that caused the..." Newt asked Tina pointing to his own eye.
Tina shook her head. "No, she doesn't talk about it. When I met her she already had it, I didn't even know she couldn't partially see out of that eye for the longest time. She keeps it hidden for the most part. Queenie has tried to figure it out in the past, but as she mentioned, she has a problem with the Brits. But I don't think it has to do with the accents, I think it has to do with you all being much more guarded."
"Not all," Newt said. "Just those with a reason to build up the walls."
