Look Both Ways Before You Cross Twiggy

Newt left the shed, leaving Queenie, Tina, and Jacob behind, he had a pep in his step, thinking that Tegwen had already left the case, but as he came upon the steps, he found the woman at the bottom of them crying. Her arms were propped up on the last step and she was crying into them. Her body heaved with each sob as she was curled up into a tight ball, with her legs tucked beneath her. Newt's body slouched as the guilt weighed heavy on him, he didn't expect her to walk right in after he and Queenie had just gone through nearly the same thing, but he was able to figure out more information that he wasn't aware of beforehand.

He thought Tegwen's anger came from him pulling the sheet off and releasing the mist that nearly killed her. He didn't think to factor anything else in because he already felt terrible enough for what he had accidently done. But he had learned that she had been angry with him for completely different reasons. She was angry with him for allowing himself to take the fall for Leta's actions.  Because he had taken the blame, Leta was allowed to remain at Hogwarts as he had planned, but what he didn't plan on was Leta making Tegwen's life a nightmare.

The way Tegwen had broken down before him certainly showed that the woman carried such large amounts of pain with her, even though plenty of time had passed since the incident.  The anger she exhibited just saying Leta's name would be incredibly hard to fake, and he couldn't figure out a reason as to why Tegwen would make something up. He remembered the night and he remembered what Leta had done. She had led Tegwen willingly towards the cauldron, knowing the dangers that were being contained.

If he hadn't intervened, Tegwen might have actually met her death before anyone showed up. Yet, in Newt's young mind, he could only focus on his friend getting in trouble. He and Leta had been friends since his first year as she was the first person to talk to him. Leta didn't get along with other students and Newt mainly kept to himself because he was so wrapped up in his own interests. When Leta showed an interest in the beast as well, he was overly thrilled to share his knowledge with someone.

However, it led to him just finding friendship in Leta. During his later years, he attempted to branch out to other students that he thought were like him, one of them being Tegwen Gittins, but Leta claimed that she didn't want their friendship to expand, she was sure that people wouldn't like her. Newt was finally putting the pieces together, it wasn't that people didn't like Leta, it was Leta who didn't like other people, specifically Tegwen.

If he had known that him taking the blame would have caused so many more problems for Tegwen, he would have never done it. He had no idea as he fell out of contact with her once he was expelled. It was a couple of years after his expulsion that Dumbledore had invited him back to the school to complete his schooling. By that time, Tegwen had graduated and no one knew where the woman went. He definitely thought against approaching the woman's parents, knowing he was probably at the top of their hit list.

He had no clue as to what happened to Tegwen, thinking she simply moved on with her life and was doing great things somewhere. Which was why he was so surprised to see the woman in New York that afternoon. It was easy to recognize her because she hadn't changed drastically over the years. Sure, she was taller and of course, blossomed into a woman, she still kept the same mannerisms from their school years. Avoiding eye contact, talking to herself under her breath thinking that no one could hear her, her moments of pure clumsiness and she still hummed the same songs.

No, Tegwen Gittins was still the same person just hiding under a great deal of pain. Pain that he had caused with his stupid actions as he thought of the wrong person in the situation. He didn't think of himself and he hadn't thought of Tegwen.

Reaching her side finally, Newt lowered himself to her side and went to reach out his hand to touch her shoulder.

"Tw-...Tegwen, look I-"

"Go away," Tegwen said not bothering to lift her head. "Just go away and leave me alone."

"No, I want to talk to you," He told her. "You don't have to say anything, just listen for a moment."

"I don't have to do anything," Tegwen hissed, lifting her head up and glaring in his direction. Her eyes were red and puffy along with her face from crying. She pushed herself up to stand and leave. She went to climb the steps to get away from him, but Newt grabbed her by the arm pulling her back.

However, Tegwen's temper flared as she whipped around cracking him across the face.  The smack was loud, causing the entire area to fall silent as Queenie, Jacob, and Tina watched from a distance, peeking around the corner.

As Newt lifted his hand to the side of his face, all of Tegwen's rage faded in less than a second as her eyes widened in horror. She raised her hands to cover her mouth as she let out a small cry.

"I'm..I'm so sorry!" She said once she dropped her hands from her mouth. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"No, no," Newt said rubbing the side of his face. "I deserved that, I'll admit."

"No," She pulled her jumper over her face. "You didn't deserve to be hit...yelled at, yes but not hit."

"But don't you feel better?"

"No, not at all," Tegwen said. "I don't hit people."

"You kicked that Auror," Newt pointed out, trying to make her feel better by adding a little humor to his tone. She peeked out from her jumper.

"That's because my life was in danger," she said in a small voice.

"And I technically put your life in danger back when we were in school, so I think it was called for."

Tegwen obviously didn't agree with him, but she didn't want to argue anymore with him. She was already ashamed of what she had done, she didn't want to become upset again and do anything else she would regret.

"You have a rather strong arm by the way," Newt said in the attempts of flattering her.

"What?" She questioned.

"Nothing," he said quickly, realizing complimenting her on her swing probably wasn't the best way to go. "I just wanted to say I was sorry."

He shuffled awkwardly in place, it was his turn to avoid eye contact as he looked down to his shoes.

"I shouldn't have taken the blame for Leta, and I truly didn't know that she would go and try to hurt you further. I should have, though, I should have known and I'm sorry...so sorry that I couldn't protect you."

Tegwen stared at him, surprised by his words. All she wanted was an apology from her about him taking the blame, but she didn't expect him to be sorry for not protecting her. She didn't understand, they weren't friends back in school, they hardly exchanged any form of conversation until the night the incident happened.

"I don't understand, what do you-"

The loud claps of thunder and the flashes of lightning interrupted the conversation from progressing any further as they made their way over to the Thunderbird along with the rest of the group.

"Danger. He senses danger," Newt announced as Frank let out a loud screeching call.

Climbing out of the case, it didn't take the group long to find the danger as they only had to follow the sounds of the sirens wailing through the city.

"That can't be good," Queenie said in a light voice. "Oh dear."

Apparating, they found themselves on a rooftop that overlooked the scene of the chaos below as the Obscurus destroyed everything in its path.

"Is that the Obscuriathing?" Jacob asked, but his answer was confirmed by the silence of the group for a moment.

"That's more powerful than any other Obscurial I have ever heard of..." Newt said.

"This is terrible..." Tegwen said but she was cut off by Newt's case striking her in the stomach, knocking the wind out of her. "Ooomph!"

He pulled out his journal and handed it to Tina.

"If I don't come back, look after my creatures. Everything you need to know is in there," he explained.

Everyone seemed to be questioning his mental state in that moment.

"They're not killing it," Newt told them but before he could do anything, Tegwen set the case down as one hand gripped her stomach and the other grabbed onto his jacket.

"This is what got you in trouble the last time, you can't face everything alone, Newt," she told him. He turned back to look at her, the two sharing a moment in silence before he raised a brow.

"Fine, then you're coming with me, but I'm not letting you get hurt."

Suddenly, the two disapparated from the other three, leaving the case and journal in their care.

However, Newt really had no intentions of bringing Tegwen with him and placing her in harm's way. He arrived to place her safely outside of the chaos and then disapparated before she could say anything.

"Mugglerfuc-...Newt!"

She became distracted by watching buildings crumble as muggles gathered around to watch the destruction unfold.

"Leave it to muggles to show up and just stand in the line of danger, so brilliant of them!"

She reached into her pocket and realized Newt had taken her wand so she wouldn't follow.

"Really?! That's it, I don't feel bad about punching you in the face anymore!" She yelled into the air before running off in the direction.

Much to her luck, Tina and the others were just as stubborn as the two ran into each other in the street.

"I thought you were with Newt," Tina asked her, surprised to see her.

"I was until the git left me back there! Trying to be heroic or something, he took my bloody wand!"

"Stay close to me!" Tina told her, grabbing her hand as the women tried dodged the debris falling around them. Suddenly, the Obscurus attempted to get Graves, sending a shock wave. Tegwen grabbed onto Tina as the woman apparated into the square behind a car.

"Ow," Tina grumbled as Tegwen land on top of her as she lost balance.

"This is kinda payback for you landing on my kidneys earlier. Consider us even now."

Tegwen rolled off the woman and the two looked across the way to see Newt hiding behind another car.

"Newt!" Tina called to him.

"Wand snatcher!" Tegwen yelled out. They moved closer to each other leaving Tegwen enough room to smack Newt's arm. "Give me back my wand!"

Newt's expression looked as though he was asking a million different questions in his mind, but it wasn't the time for it as he pulled Tegwen's wand out of his sleeve and handed it over to her. She snatched it out of his hand.

"It's the Second Salem Boy," Newt told them. "He's the obscurial."

"He's not a child," Tina pointed out that he was well into the adolescent years.

"I know, but I saw him. His power must be strong. He's somehow managed to survive. It's incredible."

"It's sad is what it is," Tegwen interrupted him. "He's in pain!"

"Newt! Save him!" Tina said before running off to deal with Graves.

"Do you know what to do?" Tegwen asked Newt.

"Trial and error always seemed to work best," he confessed before grabbing her hands and leaving the scene.

They landed on a rooftop where they could see the Obscurus heading away from them. Newt grabbed her hand to chase after, but Tegwen pulled back as she saw a muggle family on the street, trying to escape from the rubble that was once their home.

"Go on, I'll catch up!" Tegwen told him. "Just...be careful."

He nodded his head before holding onto her hand a little longer before letting go and disappearing.

Tegwen landed before the family to see the children trying to get their mother who's legs were trapped. The youngest were crying as the oldest were struggling. With a wave of her wand, the debris was removed from the woman who let out a cry of horror, however, the children seemed more than happy.

"Momma, she's gonna save us!" A little girl said.

"Get away from her!" The mother cried out. "She's a witch!"

"Um...I prefer to go by the name of Tegwen," Tegwen informed the woman. "And a thank you wouldn't be going out of the way."

The woman  scooted away as Tegwen approached to heal her.

"Don't touch me with your witchcraft!"

"Do you want to be capable of getting your children to safety or not?!"

The woman fell silent as the children looked on.

"She's helping us, Momma, I thought you said witches were bad?" One of the other children questioned.

Tegwen turned to the children as the mother's legs healed.

"That's why you shouldn't spread nasty rumors. Lesson of the day for you all brought to you by Tegwen Gittins."

"Tegwen Gittins?"

"At your service."
