Eagles Do Not Caw, They Claw
Queenie had managed to bring the group to safety and Tegwen couldn't be any more grateful to the woman for her quick thinking and brilliant actions. They were brought to a rooftop that looked over the entire city, with a pigeon coop set up in the back filling the air with cooing noises from the birds. Tegwen rubbed at her knees that ached from being thrown about by the MACUSA officials as if she were some sort of rag doll. In fact, her entire body ached something fierce and her mind was begging her to go to sleep. But she wouldn't allow herself to do so. After facing death once again and narrowly escaping, the woman merely let out a faint sigh as she sat on the edge of the building looking down. The street below was abandoned for the most part, with the exception of a man hurrying through trying to get out of the cold.
Something moved on her arm causing her to jolt, when she felt a tight grip on the back of her coat, holding her in place. In a panic, she turned her head and saw Newt standing behind her, with his hand still holding her coat. He didn't say anything before she peered down to her arm, wondering what had touched her when she saw Pickett poke his head out. The tension in her body relaxed as she smiled down at the bowtruckle that crawled out from the safety of her sleeve and made his way back to Newt's jacket.
"You were so quiet I forgot you were there," She said in a quiet voice, not bothering to look up at Newt. She really had no idea of what to say to the man or if he wanted to hear her talk. However, she did hear Pickett start off a clicking noise as if he were talking to Newt about something. She heard Queenie and Jacob discussing breeding pigeons and owls, while they stood in the pigeon coop.
Still feeling quite guilty for yelling at Tina while they were back in the cell, Tegwen didn't want to face the other woman just yet. There was truth to her words, but seeing as they were about to face their deaths shortly after that moment, it wasn't the smartest move to yell at Tina. It couldn't have very well been some of the last words she exchanged with one of the women she admired so much.
Rubbing at her eyes that were burning from struggling to stay open, Tegwen wished she had a cold bucket of water to pour over herself to keep awake. Instead, she began to hum a tune to herself, trying to remember all the parts to keep her brain focused on something else besides the idea of sleep.
"What song is that?" Newt interrupted her humming after a minute. She glanced over at him.
"What?"
"I said what song is that? I remember you used to hum that same song in class, in the corridors, in the Great Hall-" He stopped himself, realizing he had given plenty away of how much he had paid attention to her during their time in Hogwarts.
Tegwen's face was already bright red from the cold, but it decided to turn a shade darker before she looked at her hands that were settled in her lap.
"It's not a known song," she said, " it's just one I made up. Well, I can't say that is a hundred percent truthful. Dad had one of his drinking buddies over one night after a quidditch match and they started up with an old Irish drinking song. I can't remember the name of it at this point, but there was one part I always liked."
"And that part would be?"
"You're not going to actually make me sing it, are you?"
"Well it's a drinking song, Twiggy, I think it's the rules that you have to sing it."
She grimaced, knowing her singing sounded like a drowning cat. She didn't need to put anyone else through the torture of hearing her sing. She instead, decided to say the lyrics that she remembered to the chorus.
"And it's no, nay, never-"
"That doesn't sound like singing, Twiggy," Newt said in a teasing tone.
"I didn't realize that you would be judging," She muttered.
"Come on, you were once an eagle you should have a mighty voice behind you-"
"Yes, because eagles have been known for being quite the songbirds of their kind," Tegwen scoffed. "I thought you were an expert-"
Newt just had a grin on his face that made Tegwen realize she wasn't going to win the argument.
"Ugh, fine," she said throwing her hands up a bit in exasperation. "And it's no, nay, never,no, nay, never no more....will I play the Wild Rover....no, never no more... There are you happy now?"
"Is that last piece part of the song?"
Tegwen went out a snort before covering up her face with her hand to conceal her ever-growing smile.
Pickett clicked in Newt's ear bringing the man to smile as well as if Pickett was encouraging him on. Suddenly, Tina came to sit with them on the ledge, looking over at Tegwen.
"About what you said when we were back in the cell," Tina began but Tegwen cut her off with a hug.
"I'm really sorry, Tina, I honestly didn't mean to say anything harsh to you, I was just upset, that's all. But really, you weren't in the wrong-"
"But I was," Tina admitted. "I shouldn't have gotten involved and I shouldn't have gotten you involved, I know this isn't where you wanted to be right now."
"Actually," Tegwen smiled to herself," it's not as bad as I thought it would be. After all, I did get to trip Mr. Graves and spit in his eye. It actually felt really good to do that! And I kinda want to do it again!"
Tina let out a laugh before looking at Newt with the mentioning of Mr. Graves.
"Graves always insisted the disturbances were caused by a beast," she began, " we need to catch all of your creatures so he can't use them as a scapegoat."
"There's only one missing," Newt answered. "Dougal, my Demiguise."
"Dougal?" Tina repeated.
"Slight problem is...um..."
"Sweet Merlin, here it comes," Tegwen said placing her hands over her face.
"...he's invisible," Newt confessed.
"Invisible?" Tina seemed to be in disbelief. "How do you catch something like that?"
"With immense difficulty."
"With a biscuit," Tegwen added bringing the two to look at her. She laughed at her little joke until she realized they realized they were staring at her. "Uh...I mean...what he said."
"Gnarlak!" Tina suddenly shouted out startling Tegwen, who fell back off the ledge before Newt could grab her. Tina pressed her lips together with an apologetic look as she peered down at the woman. "Sorry, Tegwen."
"It's alright, my spinal column broke the fall this time."
Gnarlak was Tina's informer during the time when she was an Auror and she was sure that he could help them track down Newt's creatures before it was too late. It was to the Blind Pig that they went.
Tina led the way through a back alley to a doorway that was covered up with brick and a poster, with a woman gazing at herself in a mirror.
Queenie and Tina turned to each other and realized they were not appropriately dressed for their occasion, pulling out their wands and transforming their work clothes into beautiful flapper dresses. Queenie suddenly turned to Tegwen.
"Aren't you going to change, honey?"
Tegwen's brows raised as she pointed to herself. "Oh...no...I'm good, really I-"
Queenie let out a charming little laugh. "Don't worry, I know just the thing for you."
"No, that's not necessary-"
Of course, Queenie didn't listen and Tegwen found herself in a flapper dress, that was quite revealing. She immediately wrapped her arms around herself, feeling cold and exposed to her surrounding environment.
"You look great!" Queenie said clapping her hands together with a smile.
"I'm freezing!"
"Well, you won't be once we're inside."
Newt examined the woman before him before looking at Jacob, who seemed to be in a trance as he smiled in Queenie's direction. Pulling out his own wand, he gave himself a bowtie to fit in.
Tegwen knew of the Blind Pig because it was a place she knew not to venture to. Every criminal that was on the MACUSA watch list was present, with their wanted posters hanging proudly on the walls as if they were family portraits. As soon as some of the sketch people looked in her direction, Tegwen let out a small pitiful squeak under her breath, scooting to the side and crashing into Newt's side.
She felt something wrap around her hand, thinking it was Pickett once again, however, as she peered down she saw Newt's hand holding hers. She looked back up to him, but Newt didn't look over at her as he kept his gaze forward.
She was brought to sit down at a table with Newt and Tina, but she seriously wished she had stayed with Queenie and Jacob, as she began to feel nauseous.
"Someone please say something," Tegwen asked. "I'm feeling sick right now from all the silence and staring."
Tina leaned forward on the table.
"I've arrested half the people in here," Tina confessed.
"Okay, no more talking from Tina," Tegwen said dropping her head to the table. She felt Newt give her hand a gentle squeeze before he looked over at Tina.
"You can tell me to mind my own business, but I saw something back in that death potion back there. I saw you hugging that Second Salem boy," Newt said in a questioning tone, wanting more information about the child.
"His name is Credence," Tina said," his mother beats him. She beats all the kids she adopts, but she seems to hate him the most."
"And she was the No-Maj you attacked?"
"That's how I lost my job," Tina said in a sad tone. "I went for her in front of a meeting of her crazy followers. They all had to be Obliviated, it was a big scandal."
"But you got a nice right hook in," Tegwen's voice echoed from where her forehead was still resting on the table. "Must look at the positives right now."
However, they would have to focus on the positives later on as Gnarlak finally made his appearance.
Tina quickly slid her hand to Tegwen's forehead and brought the woman to look up. Immediately she spotted the suave dressed goblin that made his way over in their direction.
"So you're the guy with the case full of monsters, huh?"
They all appeared uncomfortable in the presence of the goblin as Gnarlak made it clear that he wasn't going to help them unless they offered something that he wanted. Newt offered money, but Gnarlak had no interest in that or any of the items that Newt placed on the table. It was only when Newt placed a frozen Ashwinder egg on the table did the goblin finally show some interest.
However, Pickett made the mistake of poking his little head out and Gnarlak finally caught sight of his payment.
"You're not having him," Newt said in a stern voice, raising his hand protectively placing it over Pickett.
"Well, good luck gettin' back alive, Mr. Scamander. What, with the whole MACUSA on your back," Gnarlak said standing up from his seat and going to walk away.
"What a di-" Tegwen growled but was stopped by Newt calling out to the goblin.
"Alright," he said as he began to pull Pickett away from him.
"What? No!" Tegwen told him. "You can't do that! You can't do that to him. We can all figure this out without-"
Her eyes fell on the small bowtruckle trying to cling onto Newt's hand, making small noises that resembled crying. Tina held onto Tegwen as Newt couldn't bringing himself to look in Pickett's direction.
"Somethin' invisible's been wreakin' havoc around Fifth Avenue. You may wanna try out the Macy's Department store. Might help what you're looking for," Gnarlak said as his greedy hands held onto Pickett.
Tegwen couldn't believe that Newt had just surrendered Pickett like that, she put up more of a fight to protect her plants. Her eyes were just focused on the little creature that fought like hell to get away from the goblin's grip, ignoring the conversation around her.
It was stupid to neglect everything that was going on when a house-elf came running in.
"MACUSA are coming!"
"You tipped them off!" Tina snapped at Gnarlak, standing up and pulling Tegwen up with her. Suddenly, Aurors burst into the area to restrain them. Chaos broke out as everyone scrambled to escape.
Tegwen was shoved roughly, breaking from Tina's side and falling to the floor.
"I swear, by the time this is all over," she said to the floor, "we're going to be the best of friends with as much time I spend with you."
An Auror spotted her and pointed his wand, but she whipped her out and knocked him back with a knockback jinx.
She rolled on her back, only to face another one, who looked dow at her with a triumphant look until he saw a grin appear on her face. There was no need for wands as she jerked her leg up and struck the man hard in his prized possessions.
The wizard let out a yelp, grabbing himself and falling over before she was lifted up to her feet.
"There you are!" She turned her head to see Jacob and sighed in relief to see him, Queenie and Tina. She straightened herself up, smoothing out her dress as Newt ran towards them, clutching Pickett tightly.
Jacob threw back a shot of Giggle Water, letting out an adorable, high-pitch chuckle as Newt reached them and they disapparated from the Blind Pig.
Jacob's giggling still echoing through the place, announcing their victory.
