Disastrous House Plants and When to Water Them

Newt left Jacob to feed the Mooncalves, and the man seemed to be enjoying himself in the presence of the little hopeful creatures trying to get some food. He walked around, trying to tend to all the hungry cries that were coming from all around while keeping an eye out on Tegwen, who continued to sit in place. Her eyes were observing everything around her, with her head slightly tilted.  He thought about saying something to her, but he figured she needed a few moments to himself. Seeing her looking around with a look of wonder on her face as she looked at the gentle beasts around her, brought Newt back to a specific memory that had stayed with him after many years.

He thought back to the time where he was in his fourth year coming back from an excursion in the Forbidden Forest. He kept his head low as returned towards the castle grounds, knowing he had to be mindful of his surroundings, due to the creatures or at the risk of being caught by any of the professors. He had reached the outskirts of the forest when he heard humming. At that point, the humming was familiar. He heard it in the corridors, in the classroom and some morning and afternoons he would hear it in the Great Hall.

Tegwen Gittins definitely enjoyed humming her little tunes of songs he had never heard before. He wondered if she made them up but he never thought to ask. They shared plenty of classes together over the years, but Tegwen always appeared to be a shy individual but openly friendly at the same time if that made any sense. She hid behind books in the class, not really talking unless the professors called upon her to do so. But she always wore a smile, greeted people kindly if they greeted her and overall was just a nice girl.

Leta Lestrange was the complete opposite of Tegwen,  heavily guarded and did whatever she had to in order to survive in a world that seemed to be against her. It was what attracted Newt to the girl back in their first year because the Slytherin girl was not afraid of breaking the rules. She was a fiery spirit, but Newt would learn that it wasn't always a good thing.

Following the humming, Newt found Tegwen sitting near the forest with her Herbology book in hand, and looking in the direction of the forest. She  was scribbling several things down, as they had the same Herbology class coming up that afternoon. She was humming to herself, a slow and soft tune that reminded Newt of a lullaby. He sat down leaning his back against the tree, listening to the song until he heard it come to the end.

Confused as to why the humming had come to an end, Newt turned around to see that Tegwen was no longer sitting, but on her way to the Greenhouses. A clear sign that he had to head to class himself.  He pushed himself up and made his way to the greenhouse, arriving as the second student behind Tegwen.

He walked in and saw Tegwen sitting in her usual spot near the back, her book still open and covering her face. However, he could see her hair poking out from outside of the book, which brought a smile to the boy's face. Stuck in the girl's hair were twigs and a couple of small leaves, causing him to ask the question to himself of what she was up to earlier.

He chuckled to himself, really enjoying the twig sticking straight up and poking over the book. His laughter though made her look over her book, her brown eyes widened completely unaware that there was someone else inside the greenhouse. She gave him a small smile, revealing the bright twinkle in her gaze before returning to her book.

Tegwen blinked several times before giving her head a shake to snap herself out of the daze she had fallen into. She looked up to see Newt moving in a direction fast and Jacob no longer in sight. She stood up and touched her hand to her forehead before following in the direction of where New disappeared. She passed through a wispy curtain to see the two men standing before an Obscurus.

The black mass moved about like smoke mixed inside of a cloud, suspended in mid-air.

"What the hell is this thing?" Jacob asked curiously as Tegwen kept her distance.

"It's an Obscurus," Newt said, however, his voice was cold and there was no joyful expression on his face. He turned away to leave, ignoring Tegwen as he walked to leave the suitcase.

"I need to get going, find everyone who's escaped before they get hurt."

Jacob followed Newt first while Tegwen looked at the Obscurus for a moment longer before letting out a cold shiver and heading out.

When she caught up with the men, they were discussing leaving the Goldstein household, which Jacob didn't seem to agree with since Queenie had made them cocoa and gave them a place to stay. But Newt reminded him that as soon as they were done with the recovery of the creatures  and everything was solved with MACUSA, Jacob would be obliviated.

"What does "bliviate" mean?" Jacob asked.

"It'll be like you wake up and all memory of magic is gone," Newt told him. Jacob's face fell as he looked around.

"I won't remember any of this?"

"No."

"Alright, yeah, I'll help you," Jacob said.

"Come on then."

"That was rather harsh, don't you think?" Tegwen whispered to Newt as they walked along.

"It's the truth, isn't it?"

"So, now you want to tell the truth?" She questioned seeing the hurt on Jacob's face at the thought of forgetting all the beautiful things he had come to witness in such a short time.

Newt turned to her, looking very upset in that moment. "That's not fair, it's not fair to throw that in my face. It's...it is the truth for him. I'm trying to help him. You know they will obliviate him, that woman hasn't stopped talking about it since we all met up. Am I wrong?"

As their eyes met, she shook her head before turning her attention back to Jacob for a second.

"You could be nicer with your wording, though," She said quietly. "Muggle or not, the man does have feelings."

As they reached the bedroom again, it was announced that they were going to Central Park to search for one of Newt's "friends." However, a thought came to Tegwen's mind causing her to turn to Newt with a questioning look.

"I thought we were going to go water my plant?" She asked him.

Newt looked confused for a moment before he rubbed at his forehead. "Well, yes, but not right now-"

"But you promised."

He was left dumbfounded for a moment before he looked over at Jacob in disbelief. He knew he had made a promise, but he didn't think he had to fulfill it right then and there.

"You did promise," Jacob informed him.

The man made a face before throwing his hands up. "Fine, fine, fine, we'll go water your plant first!" He couldn't believe that he was agreeing to it but seeing how happy it made Tegwen in that moment made it worth it.

Tegwen felt guilty about leaving the Goldstein apartment without saying anything to Tina and Queenie but she certainly hoped that they would return before the women woke up. They arrived outside of her home, where Tegwen was able to land comfortably as she had been the one to apparate, rather than accompany them through Side-Along. However, when she looked up, she caught sight of something in her window and let out a squeal of horror.

Newt and Jacob seemed puzzled as she ran off and followed the woman up the stairs to her place. When they came in, Jacob gasped loudly while Newt's eyes widened. Throughout the apartment, vines were all over the place covering everything inside.

Tegwen stood in the middle, surrounded by the vines and leaves, with a look of shock on her face.

"This is...this is a big plant," Newt said in an impressed tone.

"How do you water this thing?" Jacob asked the real question on everyone's mind.

Tegwen turned around, her hands holding the sides of her face.

"Oh my Merlin....oh...oh..." She began feeling lightheaded as she looked around. "What...my...furniture...my home...my plant!"

"What's wrong? It looks alive and healthy!" Newt told her.

"The problem is when I left this plant, it was only this big!" She held her hands apart a short distance in height. "And now...now it's...it's moved in and made itself very comfortable!"

She reached the blooming part of the flower to find her knitted quilt that had originally been thrown over her sofa, currently being munched on by the flower.

"Hey! My father made me that!" She said walking over and snatching it out of the flower's mouth.

"What kind of plant is that?" Newt asked taking a few steps closer to her and the plant.

"I...I don't know," Tegwen admitted. "I found it while I was out with the giants and I thought it was so beautiful and...stop judging me!"

"I'm not judging you!" Newt said with a grin. "I am just questioning as to why you took a plant that you knew nothing about to your home."

"Because I wasn't expecting it to destroy my home and you so are judging me, I can see it right on your face!"

Newt couldn't help but laugh at her flustered state as she held the half-eaten quilt in her hand.

Jacob looked around as it seemed something out of a fairytale, like the one his parents had told him when he was quite young. Jack and the Beanstalk came to mind as he observed the thick vines that were all over. He attempted to walk around the place a bit when his foot kicked against something.

He bent over to pick up what appeared to be a cat collar and grimaced instantly as it jingled. With a frown on his face, he walked over to where Tegwen and Newt were standing.

"Er...I'm really sorry about your cat," Jacob told her as he went to hand over the collar to her.

Tegwen glanced over her shoulder. "What cat?"

The man quickly threw the collar aside and placed his hands behind his back. "What cat?" he repeated. She looked puzzled but didn't question it any further before leaving into her kitchen to grab water for the plant.

With her distracted, Jacob quickly kicked the collar away while Newt gave him a look. They seemed to exchange a silent conversation before Newt took out his wand and completely destroyed the evidence before clearing his throat to cover up the noise.

As Tegwen watered the plant, the vines slowly began to retract, leaving her furniture and her walls. The woman rested her forehead against her counter and remained still for a moment, while Newt kept his wand out to repair the damage sustained to the place.

Slowly, the plant returned back to its original size, looking like a small dainty house plant.

Tegwen lifted her head her and eyed the plant, a small smile on her face as she reached a hand out and touched it. The plant coiled one of the small vines around her finger and seemed to hold onto her, apparently happy that she was home and thankful for the water.

"Is she smiling after the plant did all that?" Jacob whispered to Newt.

"It wasn't the plant's fault and she knows that," Newt answered. "She was well aware the plant was probably thirsty or in this case, rather hungry. The plant did what it needed to, to survive. Animals do it too."

"You caused quite a mess here, Freudrick," Tegwen whispered to the plant.

"Freudrick?" Newt said as he heard the name. Tegwen looked up at him, her cheeks turning a slight pink.

'Yes, I think he looks like a Freudrick," she said. "Freud for short. Freud the Hungry."

"You uh...magic folk hold a lot of forgiveness, don't you?" Jacob said. 'I mean, if I came home to this..well I'm not going to lie, I would be furious. I'd probably light that plant on fire. But then again, I don't have a voodoo stick to repair everything."

"It's a wand, Mr. Kowalski," Tegwen corrected him. "And magic cannot repair everything."

"Hey, if it can fix a roof, that's good enough for me!"
