CH03 : A CHANGE
OF PACE

I followed miles down to the train with a worried look. were we really doing this? I mean, whenever he got bit that spider probably had to be totally normal right?

I followed him down the stairs and he held my hand tightly, I then glanced down at the spider on the ground.

Okay, that definitely didn't look normal at all. Hm. I did get bit by something yesterday, I was feeling a little itchy today too.

Oh god. this spider has a number on it, the same one had a number on mines too.

Then I just shrugged and muttered and 'eh' before miles touched the spider and it glitched. my eyes widened and I stepped back surprised by this.

That's when I heard voices start to echo in my ears and I looked around for the sound, then stopped in my tracks.

'Why is this happening to me?'

'No, no, wake up...
please don't die.
I love you.'

'I'm not
who you
think I am.'

I felt my pupils suddenly start to get smaller and smaller, there was a purple hue surrounding it then it disappeared.

I then turned to miles and he turned to as well and pointed at my eyes, I touched them before shaking my head.

Move.

The voice was like silk when I heard it speak. I covered my ears and winced from the ringing sound in my ears. where was that voice coming from.

Quick.

I didn't even feel my own self when I had grabbed miles and pushed him out of the way so he wouldn't get hurt, I dodged as well.

That went by like a blur. since when was I that fast? yesterday I was moving like a slug when I was helping my mom finally open up her diner.

"Norman, listen to me."

I slowly got up from my spot and stood next to miles, I squinted my eyes and saw some type of..goblin? I need help mentally, cause what was happening?

"Spider-man?" Miles whispered but I quieted him by placing my hand over his mouth, he glanced at me and gave me a nervous smile.

"I cannot let you open a portal to another dimension. Brooklyn is not zoned for that."

"It's not up to me."

Miles eyes widened again, "is that green goblin?!" he whisper shouted to himself.

I popped him on his mouth and shushed him, "Shh!" I whisper shouted myself.

"Why won't you quit?!"

"I guess I like Brooklyn not being sucked into a black hole."

I grabbed miles arm, "I think we should go." I said and he nodded in agreement.

"Staten island, maybe. not Brooklyn."

Well, that plan of us getting out of here wasn't gonna go as planned. some type of ladder-thingy came towards us and I felt my sleeve latch onto something sharp dragging me up into the air.

Miles latched onto my leg and I let out a small scream. man, why was I even here again? I feel sleepy and my mom is probably trying to call me.

My god, why were these two fighting so aggressively? I fell off the ladder screaming, "Miles!" I shouted and his eyes widened when he saw me falling.

He grabbed me and wrapped his arms around me, I fell onto his chest and he let out a soft groan.

That's when we started running again only to come to a stop because of miles, "Whoa!" he says and I looked down.

What was that? wha-what am I even looking at right now? I'm confused honestly.

"What now?" I whispered as I tuned to miles, he turned to me with an 'I don't know' look. I kinda figured cause I didn't know what to do myself, "what is this place?" I whispered to myself.

I suddenly felt myself get thrown off the surface we were previously on, I screamed and reached out for miles but his fingers slipped through mines.

My eyes widened in fear since I couldn't grasp onto anything around me, I then hit the hard surface of where the collider was.

I grasped onto a metal railing while miles looked over at me to make sure I was okay, then my fingers suddenly started slipping.

"Miles I- I can't hold on!" I yelled and he made his way over to me, grabbing my hand, "Grab onto my ha—" before he could finish we both started falling down.

I felt his arms wrap around me, I shut my eyes closed and waited for the hard impact.

Suddenly arms wrapped around both me and miles, then we were placed softly on some type of surface.

Oh, spider-man had saved us. thank god for him. I squinted my eyes and looked at him with a tilted head.

"Did you know your shoes are untied?" He asked miles and I looked down at his shoes, "all the time..." I grumbled while shaking my head.

"Uh-huh." Miles replied with a nod. I looked down at my hands and saw them shaking, probably because I just saw some big monster who had green skin and looked like it could kill.

"This is a onesie, so I don't really have to worry about it." Spider-man said as he looked at us.

That's when he stared at us and squinted his eyes, "I thought I was the only one. you two are just like me." Spider-man says.

"I, for one, don't wanna be." I said while shaking my head, "I don't think you have a choice, kiddo. you both got a lot going through your heads, I'm sure." Spider-man replied.

"Yeah." Miles agreed and I just ran my fingers through my hair, a frustrated sigh escaping me.

"You're both gonna be fine. I can help you." Spider-man said, glancing at him I just nodded, "if you two stick around, I can show you guys the ropes."

I nodded, "yeah."

"I just need to destroy this big machine real quick before the space-time continuum collapses." Spider-man says, "Don't move. see you guys in a bit." then he webbed away.

I stood up, "that seems so easy for him." I said with my eyes wide in surprise. miles stood up also.

I then saw a purple blur appear and oh crap...that guy was fast. I'm gonna have to gouge my eyes out, I wanna SLEEP.

Me and miles watched as they fought and I hid behind one of those bins, peeking my head out.

Miles brought his phone out to record, I crossed my arms and just watched the whole thing.

"I should go up there and help him." Miles whispered to me, "and what are you gonna do? you don't know how to use your webs." I said.

"I can try—"

Then he took a look at the green monster thing.

"Actually Y'know what you were right." he says and ducks down again.

That's when some lights had shut on and I furrowed my eyebrows a little bit, confused as to what was happening.

"No! No, don't do this! stop!"

I felt my vision go purple and I saw all the electricity in the collider.

"You don't know what it can do! you'll kill us all!"

I covered my eyes when a bright light started blinding me, miles wrapped his arms around me just to make sure I wouldn't get hurt.

I fell the surface beneath me and miles collapse, I fell a few meters down from him and hit my back a bit hard on one of the poles.

I saw goblin grab spider-man and push him towards the collider, was I about to witness someone dying?

I closed my eyes when a blast occurred, then I removed my arms from my eyes and saw debris and rubble on the ground.

I felt miles grab my hand and I landed softly on the ground and saw spider-man in the distance, "Hey! are you okay?" Me and Miles ran towards him.

I kneeled down and pushed some rubble off of him, "I'm fine, I'm fine. just resting." Spider-man says.

"Can't you get up?" I asked and he turned to me, "Yeah. Yeah, I always get up. the coughing's probably not a good sign." Spider-man said.

"Find him. now." I heard someone say in the distance.

"Listen, we gotta team up here. we don't have that much time. this override key is the only way to stop the collider. swing up there, use this key, push the button and blow it up. you both need to hide your faces. neither of you don't tell anyone who you are. no one can know. he's got everyone in his pocket. if he turns the machine on again, everything you know will disappear. your family, everyone. everyone. promise me you'll both do this." Spider-man explained.

"We promise." Miles spoke and I nodded.

"Go. destroy the collider. I'll come and find you both." Spider-man said and shooed us away.

Me and miles ran and I glanced one last time at spider-man the fear evident in my eyes, "it's gonna be okay." he reassured me.

I then followed right after miles and we both hid behind some rubble, I watched as a rather large man appears.

The guy with the purple on appears and I watched with squinted eyes while miles held my hand tightly.

"Don't you wanna know what I saw in there?"

"Wait."

"I know what you're trying to do, and it won't work. they're gone."

I heard Kingpin— yes I finally knew his 'name'. but I heard him yell as he slammed his fist onto spider-man's chest.

My eyes widened and my lips trembled when I quickly turned away and buried my head in miles shoulder.

Miles accidentally touched a piece of glass which caused a loud sound to be made, "what was that?" Kingpin says then he turns to us.

I quickly stood up, "kill those guys." kingpin said and turned away.

I started running with miles and we ran down the tunnel, Miles was the first to climb over the fence and I did the same.

I could see that same guy from before chasing us, I was quick to dodge one of his attacks and miles held onto my hand tightly as we both continued to run.

A train came our way but I was quick to latch onto miles and both of us stuck onto the ceiling.

Once the train was gone I noticed my hands didn't unstick and started to let the panic settle in, "crap, crap..." I mumbled to myself.

"Please stop sticking..." I begged to myself hoping the lord would at least have mercy on me.

I fell but miles caught me in his arms and I sighed in relief before getting out of his grasp and we both started running again.

I don't know how long it was until we made it outside, I hid behind a car with miles and made sure the coast was clear.

I then let out a breath of relief and shut my eyes closed, I walked down the side walk and had my hands in my pocket.

Miles hurried and followed after me to make sure I was okay, then he touched my shoulder and turned me around to look at him, I quickly looked away.

"I think it's best if we'd both go home." I said, "Y-Yeah." Miles replied and wrapped his arms around me.

I buried my head in his shoulder and squeezed him tightly before pulling away, miles leaned his head against mines.

"Get some sleep." Miles told me and placed a kiss on my forehead, "you too." I said and moved away.

I glanced at him one last time before tuning away, walking home.

I made my way inside my window and shut it behind me, my mom was currently sweeping up the living room and I walked inside.

Her head perked up when she heard my footsteps and she glanced at me, "[name]? it's a school night. what are you doing here?" she asks.

Our cat Frankie must've noticed something was wrong and he made his made way over to me, letting out a soft meow.

his tail thrashed back and forth when he noticed my sad look, I grabbed frankie and carefully picked him up, holding him in my arms.

Without even questioning my mom noticed my sad look and wrapped her arms around me, rubbing my hair soothingly. I buried my head in her shoulders and held my tears back.

Maybe I wasn't fit to do this at all honestly.
