The sound of the rain floats in gentle waves, as if gravity is a soft music from Earth and was enough to awake Evelyn from her light slumber. Rolling to her side, and towards the window that displayed the lit up city in front of her, she gazed at those bright friends of the moon that seemed so fixed and yet ever changing. Reminding her there will always be a little light within the darkness.
Sighing, she unlocked her phone and the sudden guilt hit her as she scrolled through all the voicemails that were being sent to her. She contemplated whether to listen to one because she knew if she did, she would be tempted to call them back.
Pressing one, she braced herself for the countless of lectures she would receive.
"Didn't we agree that I am the reckless one and you would be the responsible one? Why'd you do that? Why couldn't you tell me before doing something stupid? You just can't stay away from trouble." Damon's voice spoke through the phone and Evelyn winced at the sharp tone.
"Eveβ" She heard him sigh. "You shouldn't have done this so tell me where you both are. Just call me back please. I love you."
Evelyn stared at her phone, wanting nothing more than to tell him where they were, but she couldn't risk putting them all in danger.
And so instead of falling back asleep, she listened to each voicemail, wishing she was with them right now as the tears threatened to pour out but she didn't. She forced herself not to.
Dragging herself out of bed, she came to a sudden halt in front of the floor length mirror in her room.
When she looked in the mirror, she saw an image only she recognised. Her attention was primarily drawn to one thing she hated. Her flaws. Many she could see. She recalled how much she despised mirrors because they never lied. There is no escaping the harsh reality reflected in a mirror.
So she did what she was best at, what she perfected. A mask worn for everyone and hiding the one she wore for herself.
Evelyn was a lost cause hidden behind a perfect soul everyone knew.
ββββββββββ
Evelyn grumbled under her breath, cursing herself for being short. "Stupid height."
Standing on her tip toes, she slightly jumped to grab the nutella jar from the top cupboard. She took a deep breath and jumped up again, wincing as she prepared for the jar to slip from her grasp.
She shrieked when she was close to falling backwards but a pair of warm hands were placed against her skin to steady her hips. "I've got you, love." His voice was deep and husky, one that made Evelyn's stomach twist into a knot.
Klaus had stepped behind Evelyn to reach for it with his hand, the other still wrapped around Evelyn's waist and she had no choice but to stand within his embrace. She could feel the warmth of his body against her back and gulped, her fingers digging into the edge of the counter as she remained still, but the stubble of his jaw brushed against her hair made her gasp quietly.
She frowned when he stepped away from her, scolding herself for feeling this.
Eve you're being a needy bitch. Stop that! She reminded herself.
In the few weeks they had settled, Evelyn hated to admit it but she found safety in Klaus' presence. It needed to stop. She couldn't understand why him of all people's presence she enjoyed the most.
She slowly turned around. "You could've hurt yourself," he spoke sternly.
"Sorry," Evelyn whispered, her eyes still looking at his chest. He tilted her chin up and she pressed her lips tightly, hoping he didn't notice her ogling him.
Her eyes were then fixated around his neck when she saw got a better of view of him under the light. Holy ice cream. Since when did he wear a necklace?!
Klaus spoke but Evelyn hadn't been listening to him, too busy staring at his neck.
Stop being hot! She wanted to scream the words to him, but it was better to not feed on his ego.
Why couldn't you be a pot bellied man?!
"Did you hear what I said?" Klaus called Evelyn out of her daze.
"Hot," she blurted out and he raised an eyebrow in confusion. She grimaced, wishing the ground to swallow her right now. Well done, Eve. You just called him hot in front of his face.
"What?"
"I mean it's so hot in here. Is the AC on?" She fanned herself and he nodded.
"Oh cool." She mentally slapped herself, quickly taking the nutella jar from him.
"You're supposed to say thank you," Klaus' tone was playful.
"You're welcome," Evelyn glanced over her shoulder, sending him a teasing smile.
"Nightmare again?" Klaus asked.
Evelyn shook her head, propping herself on top of the counter and sat crossed legs. "No," she lied. "You?"
"Couldn't sleep."
"I'm starting to think you don't sleep at all," Evelyn laughed.
She caught Klaus staring at her. "What?"
"I'm surprised you're not having ice cream." He pointed to the nutella jar in her hand.
"I've been craving for nutella," she shrugged.
"With apples too?" Klaus asked, surprised. Evelyn nodded. "You do know that's fruit," he stated, finding it odd that she was actually eating a fruit.
"I know." She continued to cut the apple into pieces.
She was taken aback when he pressed a hand against her forehead. "What are you doing?" She mumbled when he placed his thumb under her chin, tilting her head from side to side, his eyes filled with curiosity.
"Are you feeling well? The Eve I know always has ice cream in the middle of the night and never fruit." He furrowed his brows.
"Nik," she giggled, removing his hands away from her face. "I'm perfectly fine."
"So you wouldn't mind if I had an ice cream?" With a mischievous smile he made his way towards the fridge.
"Don't even think about it." Her eyes widened, jumping off the counter and running past him as she blocked him from opening the fridge. "Touch one and you'll face the consequences," she warned him.
He raised an eyebrow and scoffed, "What are you going to do?"
"We wouldn't want a triple repeat of what happened back in Mystic Falls do we?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Shall I refresh your memory?"
He took a step back, raising his hands up and chuckled, "I understand."
"Glad you do." She seated herself back on the counter.
"What is it with you guys and your obsession with drinking bourbon?" She asked when she caught him grabbing the bottle from the cabinet. "Don't get me wrong, I love ice cream but I have a variety of flavours to eat from but yours is just the same drink and taste every day and night. Don't you find it boring? Why can't you have juice or water instead?"
"My love."
"Hm." She looked up. "I'm talking too much again, aren't I? Sorry," she gave him a sheepish look.
"I don't mind but slow down," he smiled, shifting away from the cabinet and took a bottle of water out from the fridge. "Happy?" He asked, showing her the bottle.
"Very much," she smiled. "It isn't a crime to drink something else other than bourbon you know. You and Damβ" He cut her off immediately.
"Don't even mention his name," he warned lowly and Evelyn looked amused. "Don't."
"Fine. I won't say his name," she paused for a second. "Stefan's brother always drinks bourbon." A mischievous smile formed on her lips.
Klaus pinched the bridge of his nose. "I told you not to."
"What? You only said to not mention his name," she shrugged with a laugh and he sat down on the stool besides her.
"I still don't understand what made you hate him so much." She swung her legs back and forth, flickering her eyes to him.
"I'd rather not talk about him," he mumbled with a sour look.
"Okay."
"Allow me." He took the knife off her to cut the apples.
"You know how cut an apple?" Evelyn asked, shocked.
"I can cook."
"Oh my God!" She let out scream and covered a hand over her mouth. "You can cook? No way. I didn't expect you to be domestic."
A small smile curved on his lips as he kept his concentration on cutting the apple for Evelyn.
All she did was stare at his hands. They were so beautiful. The veins. The roughnessβ
Evelyn sucked in a breath and cleared her throat, shaking away her inappropriate thoughts about him.
Once Klaus was done, he handed the plate back to her. "Soβ" Evelyn began.
"So?" He rested his hand against his cheek as he gazed at her with a warm look.
"Can you turn into a wolf andβ" He knew where this was going and buried his face in his hands, groaning.
"We've spoken about this before, love. We are never playing fetch."
It became a repetitive demand for Evelyn to ask Klaus constantly to turn into a wolf so she could play 'fetch.'
"It'll be so fun," Evelyn pouted. "It can be our secret. I won't tell anyone that will bruise your ego and big bad hybrid reputation."
"Still not happening," he shook his head.
"Not even for 10 minutes?" Evelyn fluttered her eyelashes at him. "Please, Nik. We can pinky swear on it."
"No."
She groaned, "I'm never going to stop asking you then."
"I'll keep saying no," he smirked and she rolled her eyes.
"One day. Mark my words." She pointed at him and he smiled, shaking his head at her.
"We'll see about that."
His eyes moved down to Evelyn's hand when she offered him a piece of apple with nutella on it. "There must be something wrong with you if you're sharing your food with me," he teased.
"It's fruit so it doesn't count," she said.
"And it's a horrible combination," he murmured.
Evelyn dramatically gasped. "No it's not. This is one the best snacks i've ever tried. Now try it."
"I'm not eatβ" She didn't let him finish his sentence and shoved the piece of apple in his mouth, taking him by surprise as she fed him.
"It's so good, isn't it?" She stated with a smile as she fed him another piece.
"You're taking care of me," he teased her.
Evelyn scoffed, "Someone has to take care of that ego."
Klaus' eyes held hers for a moment and she gave him a look that dared him to respond back to her remark but he was defeated. "Rude."
She laughed, throwing her head back then glanced back at him. He gazed at her as she continued to burst out into laughter. It felt like a privilege to watch her smile, and a melodic laugh or a playful giggle were enough to lift his spirits.
Yet he knew behind those bright eyes that spoke of such kindness and joy was something more to what she shown and it bothered him a lot.
He wanted to take away what was saddening her.
"You know I'm really disappointed that you weren't a pot bellied man. I mean your name sounds like one." She fiddled with the hem of her shorts.
"Santa Klaus," she tested the name. "Santa Klaus!" She clapped her hands, laughing.
"You are not calling me that. You need to stop making names for me," he narrowed his eyes at her.
"I'll think about it. Santaβ I mean Nik," she pressed her lips tightly to suppress in the laughter and the urge to not repeat the name.
"Eve," he warned.
"I didn't say it," she giggled quietly.
They continued to talk with Evelyn sharing her snack with Klaus as he listened to her rambling most of the time. But he didn't mind. He enjoyed hearing her voice even if she spoke of the most random matters ever.
"Okay. I should probably sleep now." She jumped off the counter.
A small gasp escaped her lips when he suddenly towered his body over hers. Too close. She leaned her head back to look up at him. "Nik?" She nervously laughed.
"Wait."
"Oh? Okay?"
She kept a grip on the counter behind her and he heard her heartbeat quickening before he raised a thumb to wipe the nutella off the corner of her lip and lifted his thumb to his own lips, licking it off with his eyes glued to hers. "Sweet," he hummed with a smirk and walked away, leaving a jaw dropped and wide eyed Evelyn.
She took some time to collect her thoughts, sighing shakily as she ran back to her bedroom.Β
I have issues. She groaned into her pillow.
ββββββββββ
"Good morning, Stefano." Evelyn beamed with a bright smile on her face when Stefan allowed her to step inside his room.
"Morning, Eve." He mumbled but the smile was still evident on his face.
He was startled back when Evelyn pulled him in a hug. Chuckling, he wrapped his own arms around her. "What was that for?"
She tightened her arms around him. "No reason. You look like you needed a hug. Eve's special hugs," she mumbled against his chest.
He laid his chin on top of her head and rubbed her back, grateful that he had Evelyn with him.
"You missed breakfast." She pointed out when they pulled away.
"I'm not hungry."
"Stefan," Evelyn whispered with a sigh. "Do I need to give a kick on your ass?"
"No." He quickly shook his head.
"I'm very close to do it."
"I'm fine, Eve. And not hungry," he reassured her.
"You never had a choice anyway. I ordered breakfast for us. Nik has gone out to do something." She opened the door and dragged a trolley in filled with food.
"You didn't have to."
"Nonsense." She waved him off. "Besides you and I haven't had Stefano and Evie time yet." She sat down on his bed and patted the spot besides her.
Stefan sighed, reluctantly making his way over to her and taking a seat. "I sort of went crazy and ordered everything on the menu. I didn't know what you wanted," she giggled sheepishly as she handed him a plate.
"Thank you," Stefan spoke sincerely.
"Why? I only ordered breakfast." Evelyn looked up at him as she took a bite off her croissant.
He smiled, "For being here even though I wish you were at home."
"I'm making this trip more fun, aren't I?" She proudly stated with a smile.
"I wouldn't count you and Klaus arguing most of the time fun," he mumbled.
"We don't argue all the time now," she scoffed. "It's progress i'd say."
"You had a fight with him yesterday for buying you banana flavoured ice cream," he pointed out.
"That's because I specifically told him I don't like fruity flavours. It's horrible and should be illegal," she scrunched her nose with disgust.
Stefan sighed when he heard a buzz on his phone and Evelyn glanced down at it too. "I've been getting way too many calls and voicemails as well," she murmured.
"Did you listen to any of them?" Stefan poured Evelyn a glass of lemonade.
"I did last night. Damon and Caroline gave me an earful the most." She let out a soft laugh which turned into a sigh. "I miss them." She rested her head against Stefan's shoulder.
"Me too." Stefan rubbed her arm and rested his cheek against her head.
"What about you? Did you listen to any?" She asked.
"No," he shook his head. "Why did Klaus even take you anyways? Does he want to use your powers?"
Evelyn sat up straight, crossing her leg over the other and turned to face him. "He doesn't want to use me for my powers. He wants to help me."
"Help you?" Stefan raised a brow. That's odd and suspicious.
"Mhm," she nodded. "He knows people that might know what I am."
Stefan quietly scoffed at that. Of course the Hybrid would manipulate Evelyn into thinking he was helping her.
"What's wrong?" Evelyn asked with a frown.
"I don't believe him," Stefan voiced out his thoughts.
"Oh," she murmured. But Klaus did seem genuine to help her out.
"Remember what we spoke about the other day?"
"Yes."
"I know you don't like lying but he can't know aboutβ" Stefan mouthed Elena. "Just because he's a hybrid now, he still doesn't need to know," he whispered.
Evelyn bit on her bottom lip, thinking about what would happen if Klaus did find out and shook off the terrifying thoughts of him killing her in the worst ways possible.
One that scared her the most was him tearing into her neck with his fangs.
"You're right. It's for their protection." She nodded. Even if she had to lie to protect her family.
"And be careful around him. I don't want him to hurt you," he told her.
"I'm always careful," Evelyn smiled and Stefan raised a brow at her. "Most of the time I am."
"You're never careful."
"But I am!"
"No." He ruffled her hair and she swatted his hand away.
"What have I told you about touching my hair." She reached out to mess his hair up.
"Hey! Not my hero hair."Stefan fixed it and Evelyn laughed.
He wrapped his arm around her, pulling her closer and pressed a kiss on top of her head.
"Greedy. I wanted that last piece of waffle," she gasped when he ate it.
"Tough luck," he laughed.
"We should have a slumber party tonight," Evelyn murmured, her concentration fixed on the food and Stefan looked horrified at the mention of it.
"No way," he shook his head.
Evelyn pouted when she tilted her head. "Come on! It'll be so fun. We can gossip, do a movie marathon," she listed and Stefan cut her off.
"No."
Evelyn ignored him. "We should invite Nik to the slumber party too. I don't want him to feel alone."
"Let him be alone," Stefan mumbled.
"That's horrible, Stefan. He shouldn't be left out," she scolded softly. "Even if he annoys me."
"I don't care."
"So slumber party it is?" Stefan pinched the bridge of his nose, taking a side glance at the innocent smile on Evelyn's face and her hands clasped together that were resting on her lap, legs swinging back and forth as she waited for an answer.
"We can have a movie marathon but no slumber party," he said and she tutted, shoulders slumping down.
"I wish Care and Kenji were here. They would definitely say yes."
ββββββββββ
Klaus knocked on Evelyn's room door for the tenth time. "We need to leave now, love."
"Then leave without me!" Evelyn shouted.
"Don't make me drag you out of there," he warned her.
"Urgh. Give me five minutes." Klaus heard Evelyn groan.
With a sigh, Klaus poured himself a drink as he let five minutes pass by.
"Evelyn!" He shouted.
"Niklaus!" He heard Evelyn shout back.
"I've had enough."
Evelyn opened the door to her room, an irritated look on her face. "Can you ever let me get changed peacefully?"
Klaus turned to look at her, the air knocked out of him, and choking on the drink he took a sip of. Which ended up sending him in a coughing fit.
"Why do you need to always rush me every time we need to go out," Evelyn continued to complain.
Klaus was too busy staring at her with wide eyes whilst still coughing.
Control yourself. He reminded himself.
"Nik!" Evelyn called him.
Klaus blinked, looking back to meet her face and cleared his throat. "What?"
Evelyn narrowed her eyes at him. "Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"You look like you're in your pain."
"I'm not." He suddenly snapped at her and she looked shocked.
"Don't give me that attitude. You didn't give me enough time to get ready. Look at the state of my hair. It looks like a birds nest." Evelyn pointed to her hair.
"It looks beautiful as always."
"Liar. I need to fix my hair."
"You can do your hair in the car," Klaus said, watching as Evelyn gave up, dragging her bag across the floor with a heavy sigh.
"I can't!" She whirled around to face him. "Do you know how hard it is to do two dutch braids by yourself? I feel like my arm is about to fall off!"
"Stop being so dramatic, love."
"Takes one to know," she remarked.
"Iβ" Klaus tried to defend himself but he failed to do so.
"Don't even deny it." He rolled his eyes, ushering her out of the room. "Where's Stefan?"
"Waiting outside."
"Do I have to go again?" She asked with a frown. "It's boring."
"I'm not leaving you alone."
"Oh my God, Nik. As always I was joking. I wasn't going run away with the bell boy," she let out a frustrated huff.
He shook his head. "Come on." She rolled her eyes at him. "What are you doing now?" He sighed when Evelyn stopped in front of a mirror.
"Taking a picture." She pulled out her phone, smiling. "I actually like my outfit today." She proceeded to take a picture of herself.
Klaus let his eyes wander to her top and whispered in a daze, "I like it too. So much."
"Nik!" He quickly looked back at her, hoping he didn't get caught. "Let's take one together," she beamed up at him.
"No," he scoffed, turning away from her but she tugged on his hand and pulled her closer to him. "I told you I don't take pictures." He tried to move away but Evelyn kept a firm grip on him.
"Well now you do." Klaus brought his hand over the camera to cover it and Evelyn smacked it away. "Say Eve is amazing," she sang with a laugh.
"Haha. Look at your face." Evelyn showed him her phone. "So grumpy. Like this." She imitated his look.
"Delete it," Klaus demanded.
"In your dreams." Evelyn kept her eyes fixed on the screen.
"Eve," he groaned.
"Stop crying like a baby."
"I'm not crying." He followed her inside the elevator.
He gently tugged on the ends of her hair trying to gain her attention. "Delete it."
"I'm not deleting it and don't even think about going through my phone. It has a password."
"It's ice cream," he stated.
Evelyn eyes widened and she covered up her shock. "It's not," she scoffed through her lie.
Dammit. I need to change my password.
"Sure it isn't." He let her out of the elevator first and placed a hand on her lower back, guiding her out of the hotel.
Evelyn tried to ignore the tingling feeling once again when she felt his hand slowly rub her back.
"Wait," she told Klaus.
"Why?"
She turned around to the front desk. "Bye guys. Enjoy working!" She waved a hand to the receptionists and they laughed, waving back at her.
She looked at Klaus, smiling widely. "They're my friends. They're so lovely."
"I know. Nearly everyone you've come across in this hotel is your friend," Klaus murmured with an eye roll.
"You need friends, Nik," Evelyn tutted.
"I do have friends," he rebuked.
"That's a good joke. You actually made me laugh for the first time," she laughed, patting his arm.
"But I do," he mumbled.
"Thank you," Evelyn greeted politely to the doorman who nodded in return. "Nik, don't be rude," she whispered to him and gestured with her head towards the man.
"I'm not saying it," he stubbornly shook his head.
Evelyn blocked him from moving any further and he moved to the other side to walk past her but she refused to let him walk away.
He took a deep breath. "The same words she said," he grumbled to the doorman.
"Nik." Evelyn placed a palm over her face.
"You didn't tell me to say the exact words," he pointed out with a smug smile.
He opened the door for her first and she sat down.
"Have you both stopped arguing? Next time give me a heads up when it will happen again," Stefan remarked sarcastically from the back of his seat.
"Youβ" Klaus was ready to attack him but Evelyn pulled him back to sit down, her eyes still glued to the screen on her phone.
"Alright boys, let's get this show on the road. You know the drill." She patiently waited for them and they both sighed, reluctantly putting on their seatbelts.
"Every bloody time," Klaus mumbled.
"What are we in the mood for to sing today? Feeling sad or happy?" She asked.
"Can we for once notβ" Stefan began.
Evelyn spoke over Stefan. "I was thinking One Direction."
"Not them again!" Klaus exclaimed and Stefan groaned.
"Taylor Swift? I know you love listening to her music Nik," Evelyn teased him.
"No I don't."
ββββββββββ
"Okay." Evelyn clapped her hands together. "Here's the plan. Move closer." She motioned for Klaus and Stefan to stand in a circle in a form of a huddle.
"Since when was she in charge?" Klaus murmured.
"She's her own boss," Stefan stated.
"Boys, I can't tell you the plan if you're going to have your own little chit chat away from me. I'm feeling left out now." She placed her hands on her hips, tapping her feet.
"What's the plan?" Klaus decided to entertain this.
"Oh." Evelyn's eyes lit up. "So I was thinking I should do the talking and gain information about Rufusβ"
"Ray," Klaus corrected her.
"Same thing." Evelyn waved it off.
"No it's not," Stefan said.
"It doesn't matter. Anyways where was Iβ" She tapped on her chin. "Ah yes. If we can't compel them to know about Ralph."
"Ray," Klaus corrected her again.
Evelyn pulled a face at him. "As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted by Niklaus." Klaus rolled his eyes this time.
"We should use my sprays on them. All of them just in case we don't know what supernatural creature they are or if they're human."
"That's the plan?" Stefan asked with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Yeah." A proud smile curved on her lips. "It's amazing, right?"
"It's perfect," Klaus smiled sarcastically through his lie.
"Oh and I have a mini crossbow in my bag," Evelyn informed them.
Klaus eyes directly went down to her bag. "Since when did you have a crossbow?!"
"I borrowed it from Ric," Evelyn said, bringing the crossbow out and showing it to them.
"You stole it, didn't you?" Stefan asked.
"Not really. I'll give it back to him one day," she shrugged.
"Which will never happen," Stefan said.
"What are you doing?" Klaus asked when Evelyn played around with the crossbow. Not again.
"Showing you how it works. I won't shoot your small dick this time don't be afraid," Evelyn reassured him.
"How many times do I need to tell youβ" Klaus gritted his teeth.
"You did what?!" Stefan asked with shock and confusion.
"When he kidnapped me, I threatened to shoot him with the crossbow which I was never going to do. I only wanted to scare him then I accidentally shot his dick but he's still here so his murder is not on my conscious," Evelyn laughed.
Stefan held a proud smile on his face looking at Klaus, and bursted into fits of laughter but Klaus refused to look at him.
"Put it away," Klaus told Evelyn.
"Butβ"
"It works. You don't need to show us," Klaus told her.
"Fine then." She rolled her eyes, shoving it back in her bag. "So you ready to take this plan into action?"
Klaus and Stefan glanced at each other then back at Evelyn who had been looking at them with hopeful eyes. "It's a good planβ" Stefan trailed off.
"Aw thank you, Stef," Evelyn smiled. "I knew it would be."
"How about you stay in the car and we'll take care of it," Klaus said.
"Are you sure? Because if this plan doesn't work. I have a taser as well," she suggested.
"You have a taser too?!" Klaus' eyes widened.
"I do," Evelyn nodded enthusiastically. "It's a pretty one too. Lookβ" She searched through her bag. "I decorated it a little."
"We really don't want to see it," Stefan murmured.
"Are you sure?" She asked and they both nodded their heads rapidly, not wanting her to taser them accidentally. "Okay."
"Just wait for us in the car," Klaus said.
"So you're not going to use my plan?" She asked.
"I will," Klaus lied again. He was going to kill them.
"Cool."
"If we need backup we'll call you," he said.
"Okay." She nodded happily.
ββββββββββ
An hour later
Evelyn hummed to the music playing on the radio as she flipped a page on the book she was reading. Frowning, she checked the time wondering what was taking Klaus and Stefan so long to gain information on the wolf's whereabouts.
"They still didn't even call me for backup," she pouted.
She opened up her bag, taking a bag of sweets out and ate them whilst continuing to hum to the music and reading her book unaware of the bloodbath Klaus and Stefan were creating.
Meanwhile, Klaus dropped the heart to the floor and wiped the blood off his hand with a napkin before Evelyn could notice.
Glancing down at his shirt, he checked to see if there were any trace of blood and was satisfied to see none as he walked down the street where the car was parked.
"Took you long enough," Evelyn said.
"Sorry, love, I had to be more persuasive with them." Klaus sat down.
"So did you find him?" She asked.
"No."
"You'll find him. Don't stress too much," Evelyn reassured him.
"This is the first time someone actually used my plan," she excitedly spoke. Klaus pressed his lips in a thin line. Now he felt bad for not using her plan.
Stefan stepped inside and sent Evelyn a smile. "You okay, Evie?"
"Great." Evelyn gave him a thumbs up. "Are you?"
Stefan hesitated for a moment and nodded. He was terribly failing at keeping his promise to her.
Evelyn scrunched her face when she smelt something off. "Is something burning?" She asked.
"There's a barbecue going on," Klaus made up an excuse and immediately drove away.
ββββββββββ
"Could you guys walk a little slow please? I'm not as fast as you are," Evelyn called out when she kept losing sight of them in the crowd.
Klaus stopped to face her, feeling the urge to hold his hand out for her to take, but instead shoved them in his pockets when Stefan held his hand out for Evelyn.
He kept his attention on Evelyn occasionally, a side glance as he hid the smile threatening to form on his lips when she stood in front of Stefan and twirled herself under his arms, laughing. She radiated so much adventure and sunshine.
"I'm starving," Evelyn spoke up. "You said we were going to eat an hour ago."
"We just need to do this first then you can eat," Klaus told her.
"Urgh."
Evelyn tuned out their talk as she let her eyes wonder around her busy surroundings, a smile plastered on her face.
That was soon faded away when she felt a cold shiver, one she didn't like at all. She glanced behind her, suddenly feeling wary at the thought of being watched but there was no one.
She winced, a hand darting towards her temple as she rubbed it to ease the pain. A sound, almost as though it was a whisper speaking, made her frown in confusion.Β
Grace? She wondered and looked behind her yet again it wasn't.
I'm so paranoid for nothing. She shrugged the thought away considering she was surrounded by people walking in every direction.
Feeling a nudge against her arm, she looked up and Klaus slightly nodded, silently asking what was wrong. She shook her head and he furrowed his brows but let it go.
As they walked down the busy street, Klaus quickly took a glance behind him where he caught Evelyn staring just seconds ago, wondering what had caught her attention.
ββββββββββ
Stefan listened to Klaus ramble on about his plans for his hybrids and answering only with disinterested hums and nods before Klaus had realised his lack of enthusiasm and rolled his eyes at him.
He frowned when he noticed it was rather oddly quiet, the one person who spoke the most wasn't speaking. "Where's Eve?"
"She'sβ right here." Stefan began to panic when Evelyn wasn't standing besides him.
"Well she's not!" Klaus snapped, hiding the panic that was also rising in him.
The two then ran off in opposite directions to search for Evelyn.
30 minutes passed by and Klaus let out a frustrated sigh, running a hand through his hair as his eyes scanned the busy crowd. The anger and worry was increasing as the thought of Evelyn missing frightened him.
He walked past a cafe, pausing and took a few cautious steps back when he looked through the window to find Evelyn, eating and laughing with who he assumed was a waiter standing behind the counter. "You have got to be kidding me!"
Taking his phone out, he sent a text to Stefan letting him know that he found Evelyn and would bring her back to the car.
He stormed into the cafe, slamming the door wide open and startled a few people inside. Evelyn turned her head to the side and smiled. "Nik!" She waved at him. "Sit down." She patted the seat next to her.
"Really? Hi? You had me worried and I find you talking to this childβ" Klaus pointed at the boy with a harsh glare. "Laughing and enjoying your time with," he hastily spoke and Evelyn's eyes widened.
"He's actually an adult," she pointed out quietly.
Klaus then looked at waiter, sneering. "Why are you staring? Do your job!" He flinched and ran away.
"Calm down, Nik," Evelyn softly spoke. "You said we were going to eat but you were taking so long and I was starving. I'm sorry," she whispered.
Klaus sighed, now feeling guilty for ignoring her needs and took a seat besides her. "Stop apologising. It's my fault. I'm sorry."
"It's okay. You should try this burger. It's so delicious but i'm not sharing so order one for yourself," she said.
Klaus eyes averted away from her when the waiter once again returned back and smiled at Evelyn. He clenched his fists and moved his seat closer to Evelyn's, his arm wrapped around the back of her chair and a glare still fixated as he silently observed the boy.
"It's on the house," he shyly whispered to Evelyn as he placed a bowl of ice cream in front of her and she returned a warm smile back.
She was suddenly cut off by Klaus' sudden outburst, "She hates fruity flavours!" He slid the bowl of ice cream away from them.
"Nik!" Evelyn hissed, embarrassed as they earned a few looks from the people around them. "It's okay. He was being nice."
"What about when I got you one by accident. You shouted at me," he let out a huff.
"He doesn't know me and I wasn't going to eat it anyways," Evelyn said.
She watched as the waiter ran away from her, and dared to not even look at her especially with Klaus' intimidating look still following his every move.
"I can't believe you scared him off like that," she scolded him. "He looks so terrified now."
"Good." A smug smile curved upwards on his lips.
"I'm going to apologise to him." Evelyn stood up from her seat.
Klaus abruptly stood up from his seat too. "We need to leave now. Stefan is waiting for us."
ββββββββββ
"You had one job, Nik. A simple one!" Klaus rubbed his temple as Evelyn paced back and forth in front of him.
"What was it?" She asked.
"To charge the sat nav," he drawled out.
"And?"
"Make sure we had enough fuel," he replied.
"And what did you do?"
"That's two jobs actually," he corrected her and Evelyn glared at him. "One job it is. You're right," he cleared his throat.
"Now, Stefan has to walk to who knows how many miles to get us gas and I have to read a map and to top it off we're in the middle of nowhere!" She waved her arms then rested them on her hips.
Klaus began to laugh, crossing his arms over his chest and leaned against the car. "This is not funny," she warned.
"It's funny that you're trying to look angry."
"I am angry," she huffed and he continued to laugh. "Stop laughing."
"Okay. Okay." He pressed his lips in a thin line to hold it back.
"Pass me the map," she demanded.
"Do you know how to read a map?" Klaus teased.
"Do you know how to charge a sat nav?" Evelyn remarked and the smirk disappeared from Klaus' face.
"Don't have anything to say back to me?" She sarcastically smiled.
"Actually I do," he said.
"And that is?" Evelyn raised a brow at him.
"Uhβ"
She scoffed, "Now if you'll excuse me. I have important things to do rather than plan for world hybrid domination." She took the map off him.
But Klaus refused to give it to her. "Give it." She pulled on his hand.
"No."
"Niklaus."
"Evelyn."
"You jerk!" She snapped when he lifted his hands up in the air and she jumped up to pry the map off him. Klaus only laughed. He just loved annoying her.
"Get it," he said.
"You know what? I don't have time to play games with you. Keep it."
Klaus raised an eyebrow. "You don't want it anymore?"
"No."
He suddenly let out a yelp when Evelyn pinched him, catching him off guard and swiftly took the map from him. "Did you just pinch my nipples?!" He exclaimed.
"They look like pepperoni anyways," she retorted with a cheeky smile.
"Why are you so horrible to me today?" Klaus asked.
She giggled and turned back towards the car but Klaus snatched the pen off her hands. "Hey!" She yelled at him. "That's my pen."
"Not anymore."
He then tried to take the map back off her but Evelyn had other ideas. She shoved the paper inside her bra. "Could you stop shoving things inside yourβ" He gestured with his hand towards her chest.
"Bra. You brainless fossil. Now give me back my pen."
"No."
She reached out, trying to release his grip on the pen. "I can't believe we're fighting over a pen!"
"You started it first."
"You snatched it off me," she retorted.
"You snatched the map off me," he remarked.
"I will bite you if you don't give the pen back to me," she threatened.
"Kinky," he smirked. "I'm down for it."
"You're such a dirty old man." He staggered a few steps back as she flicked him on the nose.
"Ha! I have them both now." She laid the map on the hood of the car. "So where are we going?" She questioned Klaus.
Klaus remained silent, refusing to tell her. "Nik, where are we going?"
He still didn't utter a word.
"Have it your way then. You chose to be grumpy and refuse to tell me the location, now you won't be able to find Ray." She leaned against the car.
Klaus refused to even look at her.
"How are you going to make your hybrids now? It won't be my problem," she shrugged. "I can stay here all day."
Klaus sighed, giving up and walked over to her. "Some silent treatment that was," Evelyn muttered.
"Is the map upside down?" He asked.
"It's the right way," she scoffed.
"No, you're looking at it the wrong way."
"It's not now turn the other way," she said.
"Why?"
"Because i'm going to spank your ass that's why," Evelyn said.
Klaus' eyes widened with a look that said 'don't you dare' as he covered his hands over his ass.
"The biting and now the spanking. Not so innocent are you?" He teased. "Don't worry. I'll keep your dirty secret."
"I don't want to touch your hairy ass. Don't get too happy," she remarked.
Giving up, she went back to turning the map the correct way round, feeling embarrassed that it was indeed the wrong way round.
"I knew it was and you say I can't read a map," he scoffed.
"Here." She shoved the pen against his chest. "Do it yourself. I give up with you."
He chuckled and began to find a route for them to follow whilst Evelyn crossed her arms over her chest, glaring at him.
"I know i'm too handsome to look at, love, but tone it down will you," he spoke up when he could feel her intense stare.
"Get over yourself."
Klaus smirked once he was finished and Evelyn grabbed her backpack, walking away from him. "Where the hell are you going?!" He shouted after her.
"Away from you."
"Get back here." Klaus followed after her.
"No. I'm going to find Stefan. He could be lost."
"He's a grown man. He won't get lost." Klaus caught up to her. "Now get your arse back in the car," he ordered.
"What did you say? I can't hear you." She sang, blocking her ears.
She nearly tripped over her own foot again and Klaus pinched the bridge of his nose as he gripped on to her waist. "Can you walk straight for once? It's either bumping into people or tripping over your own foot everyday."
Evelyn whirled around to face him. "Well i'm not straight!"
"Oh," Klaus' eyes widened.
Evelyn let out a tired sigh, turning to walk away from him.
"So do you have a girlβ" he began.
She cut him off. "None of your business. My love life has got nothing to do with you."
"I'm just curious," he mumbled.
Evelyn pulled out her phone and raised it up in the air, searching for service but groaned in annoyance when she received none. She placed it back inside her pocket and quickly side eyed Klaus who was quietly walking besides her.
He was still processing the information and curious to know if she had a girlfriend.
"I can find Stefan by myself," she spoke up.
"You'll get lost," he said. "And let me hold this. You're struggling with it. Don't fight me on this." Evelyn reluctantly let him take her backpack off her.
ββββββββββ
"Now can we go back to the car?" Klaus asked when they stood in the middle of nowhere for the third time.
"I guess," she said but her eyes drifted over Klaus' shoulder, beaming with excitement.
He immediately shook his head, blocking her view. "Don't even look there."
"It's a farm!" She pointed. "I'm checking it out." She happily skipped past him.
"I'm giving you 5 secondsβ"
"To go there. Thanks, Nik. How kind of you," Evelyn cheekily smiled.
"Why don't you ever listen to me?" He groaned.
She giggled at him and tried to climb over the gate. She sighed, trying again and he shook his head, moving from his spot.
Evelyn gasped when Klaus' hands were placed against her waist, gently touching her skin and lifted her up, helping her climb over the gate. Evelyn shyly whispered a 'thank you' to him.
"Look at all the beautiful animals. There's horses too! Wow. I want to own a farm now." Evelyn wandered around the land.
"Hi," she cooed at the animal in front of her and crouched down. "You are so cute."
"It's a piglet!" Klaus exclaimed with disgust. "How is that cute?!"
"How could you say that?" Evelyn scolded him.
"It's ugly," he pointed to the piglet.
"Here hold him." Evelyn handed Klaus the piglet but instead he took a step back.
"I am not touching that. Get that away from me."
"That? Show the piglet some respect."
"I'm not showing that respect," Klaus scoffed.
"Don't listen to him. He's just jealous," she spoke to the piglet.
"I'm not jealous. I'm the Hybrid," he spoke with arrogance.
"And? What do you want me to do about it?" Evelyn looked unbothered about it and Klaus frowned.
Klaus watched Evelyn gently coo at the animal in her arms. "I want him."
"We are not keeping him." He quickly denied her request.
"We can take care of him," Evelyn pleaded. "It'll be so fun to have a piglet with us. I'll let you name him," she reasoned.
Klaus thought for a moment. Please say yes. Evelyn prayed.
The piglet was staring at Klaus and he made a face at it.
"Nope. I'm not taking care of it, and put it back down."
"Fine then. I'll take care of him myself," Evelyn walked away with the piglet in her arms.
"Are you crazy? We are not kidnapping the piglet." Klaus followed her.
Evelyn laughed, running with the piglet as she reached the gate, ready to leave and kidnap the animal.
"No." Klaus sped in front of her and Evelyn frowned.
She set the piglet down. "Where are you going now?" He asked him.
"To ask the farm owner if I can keep the piglet then," she answered.
"Don't even think about it." Klaus ran after her.
"I already did." Evelyn ducked under his arm when he stood in front of her. "I'm keeping him whether you like it or not."
"Eveβ"
"I have service on my phone now. Let me call Stefan first and let him know first."
"Hi, Stef."
"Hey, Eve. I won't be too long." Stefan answered her call.
"Okay. Guess where we are? Actually i'll just tell you. We're at a farm and i'm getting a piglet for us," she squealed.
"No we are not!" Klaus shouted from a distance.
"You're not, but Stefan and I are."
"You didn't ask me if I wanted to take care of it or not," Stefan said.
"You don't want to take care of it with me?"
"It's a piglet, Eve." Stefan sighed.
"That's what I told her." Klaus input himself in the conversation. "He's taking my side."
"No he's not. Go away." Evelyn shooed Klaus away.
"You know what, do what you want. I don't want to listen to you two arguing again." Stefan ended the call.
"Why are you still here?" She asked Klaus. "Go back to the car."
"I will not allow this to happen," he shook his head.
"Hi!" She waved at the farmer who looked at her with curious eyes. "I'm Evelyn," she smiled brightly.
"Hi." The farmer awkwardly smiled back.
"Can I keep your piglet? If it's not free I can buy it off you but I don't have cash on me right now. Wait do you take online bank transfer?" She went straight to the point and the woman looked taken aback.
Klaus stood behind Evelyn, placing his hand over her mouth. "She's not herself today. Ignore her. We don't want the pig."
Evelyn discreetly pinched Klaus' arm and he let go, keeping the forced smile on his face.
"He's the one that's not himself. So how much are you willing to let me buy your pig?" Evelyn asked.
"Uhβ" The farm owner kept looking between Evelyn's hopeful eyes and Klaus mouthing her to say 'no'
"Let's leave her alone, love." He pulled Evelyn along with him.
"You brought this on yourself the moment you said no to keeping him," Evelyn whispered to Klaus and turned back to face the farmer.
"What are you going to do?" Klaus was now worried.
"We used to have a pig beforeβ" Evelyn began as she spoke the farmer.
"No," Klaus said to himself with alarming eyes.
"And yours just reminded me of him." Evelyn faked a sniffle. "I'm feeling a little emotional right now just thinking about him."
The woman placed a hand over her heart, now feeling sympathetic for Evelyn. "I'm so sorry for your loss."
"What she just saidβ" Klaus tried to speak.
"His name was Nik jr." Evelyn wiped a fake tear away and Klaus' eyes widened, his head immediately turning to Evelyn.
She did not.
"Named after his father." She wrapped her arm around Klaus' and rested her head against it.
"Isn't that right?" Evelyn sweetly smiled up at Klaus as he clenched his jaw, wrapping his own around Evelyn to cover his annoyance.
"Yes," Klaus stiffened.
Eve: 1
Nik: 0
"It's a sensitive subject for him." Evelyn looked back at the woman. "He was the one that found him dead. Couldn't stop crying for weeks."
"Not for weeks." Klaus faked a laugh.
"You're right. It was for months." Evelyn nodded.
"You must've been really close to Nik jr." The woman softly spoke to Klaus who looked ready to commit murder any moment now.
Evelyn discreetly nudged Klaus. "I was." He gave her a bitter smile.
"He would even spend most of his days sitting outside in our backyard where we built Nik jr's little playhouse."
Klaus turned to Evelyn, giving her a glare and she kept smiling at him, rubbing and patting him on the chest.
Eve: 2
Nik: 0
"I meanβ" The woman trailed off. "You can keep mine seeing as how special Nik jr was to you."
"We can?" Evelyn eyes lit up. "Are you sure?"
Klaus chuckled bitterly. "What we need is to mourn for it."
"Nik jr," Evelyn corrected Klaus.
"Mhm." he nodded and she waited for him to say it. "Nik jr." He forced it out with gritted teeth.
"Right now replacing him with another pig is not the best idea," Klaus stated and Evelyn lips curved down into a frown.
"Shh. It's okay." Klaus buried Evelyn's face against his chest and she struggled to move out of his hold. "There, there love. Let it all out. She's just having a rough day."
Eve: 2
Nik: 1
"We need to leave," Klaus murmured to Evelyn.
Klaus averted Evelyn away, his smile turning into a scowl as he whispered lowly to her. "How dare you name our non existent pig, Nik jr?!"
Evelyn removed herself away from his arms and rested her hands on her hips. "If you agreed to keeping the piglet then I wouldn't have named our non existent pig after you. I even offered to let you name him."
"It's a pig! How can you keep that as a pet?!" He shouted.
"You can!"
"No, you can't!"
"Is everything okay?!" They heard the farmer shout from a distance, a look of concern written all over her face.
They turned to her, and Klaus pulled Evelyn back into his arms as he nodded, pretending to console Evelyn and placed her head against his chest.
"She's just missing him a lot!" Klaus shouted out.
Once the woman left their sight, Evelyn moved away from him.
"I wish you choke on your dog tail," Evelyn blurted. Her eyes widening when she realised what she just said.
"Well it's a good thing I can shift whenever I want," Klaus said with a smug smile.
"Then i wish you choke whenever you drink blood."
"Is that all you can think of?" He laughed. "Then I wish that you trip over your own foot," he snapped back.
"I wish that you never find the wolf to make your hybrids," she scowled back.
"I wish your favourite ice creams flavours run out and you have no choice but to eat the fruity flavours," he sneered.
Evelyn gasped and recovered herself back to the glare. "I wish people find out that the Niklaus Mikaelson watches disney movies. I wishβ"
"You already had your turn. It's my turn now." Klaus stopped her.
"Go ahead."
"I wish someone steals all your sprays." Klaus proudly smiled.
"Arrogant puppy."
"Crazy woman."
"I'm not apologising for what I said." Although she was tempted to. No Eve. Don't feel guilty.
"Neither am I." Klaus felt the same but refused to. Apologise to her. No don't.
"Fine," Evelyn shrugged.
"Fine." Klaus shrugged back.
She spun around and walked away from him. "That's the wrong way!" He called out.
"I know that!" She swiftly moved to the opposite direction.
"You didn't."
"I did. I was just testing you."
Evelyn's cheeks heat up, pacing her walk with Klaus trailing behind her as a smug smile appeared on his face, knowing he was right and got under her skin.
ββββββββββ
"So you're not going to sit at the front?" Klaus asked when Evelyn sat at the back of the car instead.
She never answered back.
"Good. I don't even want you sitting next to me," Klaus muttered.
Stefan arrived noticing the silence between them. "What happened now?" He sighed.
"He never let me keep the pig." Evelyn started. "She named a pig after me." Klaus also spoke at the same time.
They both began to speak on top of one another and Stefan pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm going to snap my own neck at this point."
"I'll be more than happy to do it for you," Klaus seethed with frustration.
"Don't you dare," Evelyn warned him.
"Oh so now you're talking to me?" Klaus humoured sarcastically.
Evelyn ignored him. "Don't worry Stefan. I'll protect you." Klaus let out an irritated grunt.
Stefan smiled. "I know you will but put on your seatbelt," he reminded her.
"Oh yeah," she laughed and sat back.
Klaus could feel a pair of eyes staring at the back of his head and turned slightly to see Evelyn was glaring at him. He scoffed under his breath and continued to drive.
"Stefan turn on the radio," Evelyn said.
"Don't," Klaus warned him.
"Please, Stef," she ignored Klaus.
"You're not sitting at the front so you're not in charge of the radio," he smirked.
"I don't give a crap," she said.
"Can you both stop fighting for once. Please." Stefan interrupted them.
"Shut up!" Evelyn and Klaus shouted.
Evelyn leaned forward in her seat, peeking her head in between them. "I'm sorry, Stefan. I didn't mean that."
"So you'll apologise to him but not to me?!" Klaus complained.
"Apologise to me first and for my safety's sake keep your eyes on the road."
"Kill me now." Stefan mumbled.
"Don't even think about it, Nik!"
ββββββββββ
"How dare you snap Stefan's neck!" Evelyn stormed towards Klaus.
Klaus did indeed volunteer to snap Stefan's neck when he was done with their arguments, shouting at them both as soon as they retuned back to their hotel suite for fighting throughout the whole car ride back.
Now, Stefan was still laying unconscious in his room where Evelyn had been waiting for him to wake up.
"You hurt him."
Klaus rolled his eyes, taking a sip of his drink when he felt Evelyn hold on to his arm and turned him to face her.
"He was getting on my nerves," he shrugged.
"We were getting on his nerves," she remarked back. "And you also ruined our movie marathon night too."
"I don't care," he said.
Evelyn let out a groan, "You annoy me so much."
"You drive me insane," Klaus retorted.
"Fuck you," she cursed back.
"It would be a pleasure, love."
"You wouldn't be able to meet my standards," Evelyn scoffed. Wow. Where did all this confidence come from?
"Want to test that out?" Klaus' eyes bored into hers.
Evelyn gulped when she watched him move closer to her and looked away.
"No need to. An old man like you could never keep up."
A gasp escaped from Evelyn's lips when Klaus' hand gently but firmly gripped her jaw, pulling her closer to his face, his eyes trapping her with the intensity of his lustful gaze, and their lips just inches away from each other.
With a smirk curving on his lips and his eyes growing darker, he felt Evelyn's chest press against his and her hand gripping on to the front of his shirt.
"I can assure you, love. Calling me an old man will be the last thing you'll ever say to me when I'll have you screaming and begging me for more."Β
Evelyn's breathed hitched, feeling his thumb trace the outline of her jaw and slowly letting it trail down to side of her neck, his thoughts tempting him to clasp around it.
Instead, Klaus took a step back and left a flustered Evelyn alone as she tried to control her rapid heartbeat.
That night they both took cold showers.
ββββββββββ
Waking up from yet another nightmare, and wiping away the heavy tear's, recalling the events that took place in her mind.
The deaths she seen.
Evelyn reminded herself that it was nothing. It had to be.
She picked out one of the books she brought along with her and made her way towards the balcony, sitting on the porch swing and reading whilst enjoying the sound of the silent night.
A figure caught her attention when she looked through the glass window where the living room area was.
She wasn't surprised to see Klaus there.
He was always awake whenever she was. Giving her company when she was alone.
They both were.
Sat on the couch, his brows were furrowed, eyes were focused solely on the drawing he had been working on.
Evelyn wondered what or who he was drawing that brought a genuine smile on his face. It made him so happy.
Using his diverted attention as an opportunity, Evelyn finally took a moment to look at him, really look at him.
Gazing at him now felt different.
He was a temptation. Enough to bring anyone to their knees with those devilish glint that shone in his eyes, and that smirk held mischief.
It pulled her towards him and she hated it.
He's ruthless and she's sweet. He's the darkness and she's the light. He's cold and she's warm. Two polar opposites. They were meant to repel against each other.
But he gave what she wanted. Risk. Trouble. Chaos.
And it was enough to get her heart beating rapidly each second whenever his presence was near her.
What was this feeling?
It felt all too familiar. But she couldn't figure exactly when and it frustrated her so much.
Quietly standing up, she quickly rushed out of the balcony and knew his gaze was now pinned on her but she didn't dare to look back at him.
She wasn't going to let her guard down for him.
She let out a huff as she sat down on her bed, trying to remove her thoughts about Klaus. Constantly repeating the words to herself.
I will not fall for my enemy.
Stranger Things fans. How are we feeling after watching Vol 2? My head was hurting when I cried so much.
I know a lot of you are wondering what supernatural being Evelyn is but that will be revealed after a couple of chapters. I just like being dramatic so you have to deal with it and be patient.
I hope you're all having a great
summer and love you!
