"Hey Haley, you in there?" Newt said through the door.
"Where else would I be?" Haley replied lazily from were she was laying on her cot with her arms folded behind her head as she looked at the roof of the homestead.
"You are decent aren't you?"
Haley rolled her eyes, swinging her legs over the side of the cot as she walked over to the door and swung it open "What's up?"
Newt smiled at the girl and she returned it "It's bonfire time, the boys are lightning it now" Haley nodded, following him outside to where the crowd was.
"So, what do you think of the new Greenie?" Newt asked as the shouting and yelling of the Gladers kept getting louder.
Haley shrugged "He's all right I guess"
Getting to were the rest of the Gladers stood, they each took a stick from Gally that had fire on the end of them. They were then thrown onto the pile once Alby shouted "Light it up!"
Everyone started to cheer and clap as nights like these made you forget for a second that you were stuck in a place with no way out. Newt placed his arm over Haley's shoulder as he lifted up his hand to ruffle her hair. She looked up at him with a smile on her face as she chuckled happily whilst trying to swat his hand away.
"Gladers! Gladers! Gladers!" The boys started to chant with their fists up in the air.
Every single month this happened. It was a small ceremony for whenever a new Greenie came up in the box. Gally shoved a jar of his 'special mixture' into Haley's chest as she quickly grabbed it before holding it up in the air with everyone else's "To the Gladers!"
Newt ended up going over to the new Greenie whilst Haley went and sat with Minho as she took a large swig of Gally's drink, no longer making a face like she used too.
"Hell of a first day, Greenie" Newt said to the boy who was sat next to him "Here. Put some hair on your chest" He handed him the drink Gally made as the Greenie reluctantly took a sip from it but not before he spat it back out on the grass.
"Oh, my God! What is that?" He asked in disgust.
Newt chuckled whilst shrugging as he took the jar back "I don't even know. It's Gally's recipe, it's a trade secret"
"Yeah, well, him and Haley are still assholes" The Greenie grumbled, glancing behind Newt's head to see Gally wrestling with some of the other Gladers.
"She saved your life today. Trust me, the maze is a dangerous place"
"We're trapped here, aren't we?" The boy asked quietly, looking over at the sad look on Newt's face.
"For the moment. But..." Newt turns around and points to where Haley and some boys were sat around the bonfire as they ate the kebabs Frypan had just brought out "...you see those guys and Haley sat by the fire?"
The Greenie turns too as Newt continued to speak "Those are the runners. That guy in the middle there, that's Minho. He's the Keeper of the runners. Every morning, when those doors open, they run the maze...mapping it, memorising it, trying to find a way out"
The boy frowned "How long have they been looking?"
"Three years"
"And they haven't found anything?"
"It's a lot easier said than done" Newt bit his lip "There's been a few times when Haley's nearly died. Listen" The blonde paused at the sound of the maze moving as he held up one finger "Hear that? It's the maze, changing. It changes every night"
"How is that even possible?" The Greenie mumbled.
Newt shrugged, taking another swig of the drink "You can ask the people who put us in here, if you ever meet the bastards. Listen, the truth is...the runners are the only ones who really know what's out there. They are the strongest and the fastest of us all. And it's a good thing, too...because if they don't make it back before those doors close... then they are stuck out there for the night. And no one has ever survived a night in the maze apart from Haley, but she's just one lucky shank"
"What happens to them? Ya know...the ones that don't make it"
Newt swallowed, keeping his eyes on the ground "Well, we call them Grievers. Of course, no one's ever seen one and lived to tell about it. That's why Haley's never spoke about her experience in there that night. But either way, they're out there"
Haley had her head leaning on Minho's shoulder as she gulped more of Gally's drink down her throat when she heard the boys start to chant "Greenie! Greenie! Greenie!"
"Now this should be fun" Haley looked up at Minho with a smile before standing to her feet.
Minho rolled her eyes as he walked beside her "Or boring" He grumbled as Gally rolled his sleeves up, opening his mouth causing the crowd to die down.
"All right, the rules are simple, Greenie. I try to push you out of the circle...you try to last more than five seconds. Ready?"
The boy didn't have to reply as Gally had already charged at him, shoving him into a group of boys before making him face plant. The Greenie groaned in pain.
"Come on, Greenie" Gally smirked at the boy laid on the floor "We're not done yet"
The black haired boy finally stood up, dusted off his pants whilst spitting some sand out his mouth "Stop calling me Greenie"
"Stop calling you that? What do you wanna be called?" Gally frowned before chuckling slightly "Shank? What do you think, boys? Does he look like a shank?"
Haley wasn't impressed by the fight one bit as Ben came over to stand beside her and threw his arm over the girl's shoulder. She sighed, leaning into the boy's side and letting her head fall onto his shoulder as the Greenie was thrown to the floor again.
"You know what? I think I've settled on Shank"
Again, the new boy sprinted at Gally with his arms going around his waist only to be slowly walked backwards as both of their feet started to slip on the sand.
Haley couldn't believe it when the Greenie managed to shove Gally to the floor causing the boys to cheer. She smiled slightly but soon rolled her eyes when Gally took the Greenie's legs from under him causing him to smash his head on the floor.
"Thomas" The boy whispered, still laying on the floor "Thomas. Hey!" The boy said louder this time as he quickly got up from the floor "Thomas! I remember my name! I'm Thomas!"
The Gladers paused for a second in shock that he remembered so quickly but the shock soon turned into celebration as Alby smiled "Welcome home, Thomas!" He held the boy's arms up as the rest of the Gladers cheered his name. They rushed over to him to welcome him home when the sound of a griever erupted from the maze making everyone go silent.
Haley clenched her jaw at the screeching sound as she tried to forget the memories that were already displaying in her mind.
"What the hell was that?" Thomas muttered, his eyes widened in shock.
"That, Thomas, was a griever" Haley said his name for the first time as every single boy turned to look at her "You should be safe in here with us. Nothing gets through those walls" She patted him on the shoulder and gave him a small nod before walking away from the crowd and over to the homestead.
"All right, guys, let's tuck it in for the night. Come on" Alby announced, patting Thomas's shoulder causing him to snap out the daze he found himself in as he followed Alby towards the hammocks.
