Alby approached Thomas's bed with a knife in his waist band as he shook the boy roughly "Thomas. Shh" He put his finger to his lip whilst his other hand comes over to the cover the boys mouth "Follow me"
Quietly and confusingly, Thomas got out of the hammock quickly looking over at the hammock Haley should've been in but it was empty as he stared at it for a moment before jogging after Alby.
"It's peaceful, isn't it?" Alby smiled as the two walked through the green grass "I know it's hard to believe, but it wasn't always this way. We had dark days. We lost a lot of boys to fear. To panic. But we've come far since then. Established order, made peace"
"Yeah" Thomas clicked his tongue, looking at Alby in confused "Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you're not like the others. You're curious. But you're one of us now" Taking the knife out his waistband, he places it gently in his hand whilst closing his fingers around it "You need to know what that means"
He nodded his head towards the maze wall causing Thomas to frown as he turned around to see names carved into the hard stone. Some of them were crossed out, others aren't indicating to the boy that the crossed out ones were the boys who didn't make it.
"Wait, is that Haley's name on there twice?" He asked, tapping the tip of the blade against the name.
Alby sighed "Newt told you about how Haley is the only one who spent a night in the maze and survived?" Thomas nodded "Well...we thought she was dead that night but the next day she came limping through those doors with a smile on her face because she proved everyone wrong. She's been through hell and back twice that girl"
Thomas nodded slightly, stepping forward and digging the knife into the stone as he carved his name in large letters whilst making sure not to ruin anyone else's.
Haley was in the woods practising her knife work when she saw Thomas kneeling down reading a plank of wood that had 'George' written across it.
"George was a runner" Thomas jumped at the sound of the girls voice as he turned his head to look at her "He was the first to die after being stung by a griever in the maze"
Thomas didn't know what to say and instead opted to just stare at the grave when Haley's voice snapped him out of his worried trance.
"Ben?"
The blonde was talking to one of her closest friends yet Ben didn't seem like himself. He was stood very still and breathing heavily.
Thomas went to take a step forward but quickly being stopped by Haley who grabbed his wrist and pulled him back to her side "Something isn't right"
Suddenly and very unexpected, Ben jumped down off the small hill he was standing on and landed on top of Thomas. He pinned his arms above his head and started shouting "It's your fault. I saw you. You did this. I saw you!"
Jumping into action, Haley stabbed her knife into Ben's leg causing him to fall off Thomas. Haley held out her hand to help the boy up before the two started to sprint away whilst letting out strangled screams for help.
Haley was out of the forest first and Thomas quickly after but Ben had managed to catch up to them as he angrily tackled the blonde to the ground and wrapped his fingers tightly around her throat.
The gladers came running over shouting over and over at Ben. Thomas had fell to the floor in pain whilst panting heavily. Haley was clawing at Ben's arm before her fist came in contact with his gut and her elbow came up to hit his face as he collapsed to the side.
Breathing heavily and her hair all messed up she got on top of the boy, grabbed both his wrists and pinned them next to his head to keep him still. The boy kept snapping his jaw at her but he couldn't get free. Thomas watched on as he couldn't believe she had held down a boy with little to no effort.
"Calm down. Calm down, Ben" She shouted when Gally and Newt came dropping to her side and letting get off the boy so they could hold him down instead.
"Yo, what the hell happened?" Fry asked loudly, his eyes darting between Thomas and Haley.
"He just attacked us!" Thomas told him, still in shock.
Haley ran a hand through her matted hair as she turned her head to look at whose hand was on her shoulder "You okay?" Newt asked her in concern.
She nodded slightly in reply.
"Calm down, Ben" Gally told him but the boy was still begging and crying in protest.
"Lift his shirt" Alby told Newt who rolled up Ben's white long sleeved top, revealing the hole in his stomach that had dark blue and purple veins growing out of it and seeping into his skin. The knife still in his leg from where she stabbed him in the woods.
Haley couldn't believe it "He's been stung" Gally looked over at her "In the middle of the day?"
"Help me, please. Please. Please, just help. Help" The injured boy withered around in pain.
"Put him in the pit" Alby ordered "Take him to the pit"
His shouting and protesting got louder when the rest of the gladers got a hold of him. Haley got up off the ground and made her way to the homestead so she didn't have to listen or watch another second of it.
