1. 왜 내가 아닌지?
Chapter 1: Why not me?
Theme: A Lie - B1A4
Excited was an understatement to define Harin's feelings. She's all glowing from head to toe. This was the first time she dressed up so much because her boyfriend got home from the USA. She wanted to surprise him with a cake.
Harin was galloping happily while holding the cake carefully. She was already on her way to Chan's house. His family already knew her so it will not be a surprise if she'll go there.
She pressed the doorbell mirthfully and was praying that Chan will open the gate. Unfortunately, it was their housemaid.
She asked her, "Is Chan already home?"
"They're still fetching him. Come inside and wait for him."
She acknowledged the invitation and was drawn inside the house. Sitting comfortably on the soft and fluffy sofa made her yawn. The shorthand of the clock pointed at 4 and the long pointed at 6. It was her nap time but she couldn't go to slumber just to see Chan again.
There was a sound of an engine outside and she was assured it was Chan and his parents. Hastily, she fixed herself using her phone as a mirror and ironed her dress using her hands. She removed the cover of the box exposing the cake's top with cherries and a greeting Welcome Back Chan!
Standing in the living area alone, she practiced her smile until she saw Chan's parents come inside. Their eyes widened in shock but it was replaced with an adoring smile. Her chest started to pound crazily. She can't figure out whether she's nervous or scared. Why would I be scared?
Chan's parents hugged and thanked her for coming. "It was nice to meet you again Harin-ssi.." the gentle voice of Chan's mother warmed her heart.
"It was an honor for me Chan eomma," she bowed.
After that short greeting, Chan's mother gave her a reassuring smile and with that, she felt scared.
"Where's Chan by the way?" Chan's mother wasn't able to answer when Chan shouted.
"It's good to be home!"
Her feet wanted to run and close their distance but she couldn't. She wanted to see his reaction fully so she just waited for him to arrive in the living area.
The smile on her face was beyond happy. It was as if she saw someone come back from the dead and miraculously made his way home.
Chan was so good-looking before he departed from Korea and now after a year he looked so dazzling and surpassed Lee Jongsuk's charisma. Chan looked like Zac Efron but only with Korean eyes. Her cheeks burned after.
"Welcome home oppa!" She presented herself and the cake with a candle being lit.
Chan's smile became wary that making her confused. It's been a month since their communication wasn't good but they trust each other especially since Chan's coming back home. It was an assurance that there was nothing wrong with their relationship. They're already 24 so they took their relationship seriously.
"You surprised me Harin.." Chan said lightly like he can't believe he saw her.
"Blow your candle now," she said and shrugged her thoughts.
Chan blew it and hugged her. It felt different though but she just shrugged it.
A couple of minutes later, she heard some conversations and laughs from men and women. They entered the house and she felt so little. Some of them were American and there was this American girl who standouts.
"The weather here is good but it's still good!" One of the men complimented and Chan just nodded.
She was completely out of place and felt so little about herself especially when she hear their American accent. She's the only one among them who hasn't been out of the country.
"Our housemaid will show you your rooms upstairs and come back here faster so we can eat our dinner," Chan commanded.
All she could feel was a disappointment. It seemed that Chan wasn't happy to see her at all. He didn't even look at her twice to compliment how beautiful she was and how she dressed up. She wished to disappear into thin air. I guess it's the wrong choice to come here.
The cake didn't fall even though her arms were already tired. She didn't bother to put the cake away because it was hers anyway. She bought it.
"Harin-ah, you can join us for dinner, I'm sure eomma made a feast for us."
The invitation was so tempting but she could feel Chan was just inviting her for respect. He was unwilling, she could say. A sad smile crept on her lips and she shooked her head.
"Gomawo.. but I have a family dinner too. I just dropped here to greet you." It was a lie. I hoped the disappointment didn't linger in my words.
She wanted Chan to insist but it didn't happen. And she waited that Chan will say the word he used to call her.
"If you say you.. thanks for coming," he said tiredly.
Her shoulders dropped and didn't wait any longer. Before she could step outside the house, she could hear a woman's voice calling Chan's name. It was the girl who standouts the most earlier. She looked at her diligently and all she could do was envy her. Her body was like an hourglass. Her hips, are too perfect. Her chest was extraordinary. She saw how she clung her arms unto Chan's neck and how they shared a sensual kiss. Did he leave me because we didn't kiss like that? As far as I can remember, he wasn't even good at kissing! How could he! Dul da silh-eo!
(Dul da silheo means I hate you both.)
Chan's eyes met her gaze. His eyes were guilty and apologetic. He whispered something to the girl and he went to Harin.
Harin bit her lip as she could not contain the pain inside her heart. They promised each other that they won't cheat and if their relationship couldn't be saved anymore, they came up with an agreement that they will have a mutual break up.
But Chan broke their agreement. He's not a man because he wasn't able to fulfill his promise.
"Yoon Harin!" Chan called her feeling guilty. It was evident that he was frustrated. On the other hand, Harin bowed her head without giving a glance to Chan.
"Oppa.. why not me? Why did you replace me?!!" She pleaded.
"Jeongmal mianhae.. I was so dumb for not telling you earlier that I wanted to let go because my feelings for you had subsided. I was scared that if I broke up with you while I was still in the US, you'll be bleeding. I wanted to tell you personally but not today and not in this situation. Now you already saw everything and I'm happy with her."
His words came to her ears like a blade. She was offended by what she saw. It was like Chan didn't respect her.
"Geurae, arasseo. Let's break up and I will forget you starting now. I will erase all our memories together and you're just a wind to me who passed by. Maeumdaero hae!" She said coldly making ice walls on her heart. She threw a cold glare at Chan before she walked out leaving alone Chan.
(Okay fine. Do what you want.)
She went outside with a broken heart while she was still holding the cake. She bought it so she should be the one to eat it. Not those bunch of cheaters!
Chan didn't even accompany her outside. He was so heartless and didn't even care for her.
"Why did you change oppa? You used to call me yeon-in but today you seemed to be a different person and you have another girl. Nan neoga silh-eo!" Harin shouted angrily and stomped her feet like she wanted them to burn down.
(Yeon-in means sweetie)
Harin pulled out the candle and erased the name of Chan in the cake aggressively. The cake's ruined but she won't throw it away. She started to curse him and the American girl to death. Hoping that our relationship with each other will be hell. Hell until they die.
Her face started to swell and her eyes started to produce tears. The tears were rolling on her cheeks and they fell on the cake. Her face was soaked wet like her face drowned in the river.
"The cake will taste salty now just like how I feel. Damn you, Chan! I dressed up but you just dumped me like a nasty rat," she murmured and sniffed.
