(1) BTS Hotline
One Shot
You drop all your textbooks on the desk before collapsing onto your bed with a tired groan. The lecture you had today was especially boring and you almost wish you didn't attend it in the first place, but since this was your first year in university, you decided to put some effort in studying.
You roll over, now laying on your back and pick up your work cellphone, getting ready for one of the many part time jobs you worked at so that you could pay for your tuition: a hotline operator.
It wasn't just a normal hotline operating job however, but specifically one about BTS.
Yes, you read that right. BTS, as in 방탄소년단 otherwise the 7 sweetest, talented and most extra men in Korea -or pretty much the world- and the people you looked up to.
You were able to get this job from an online ad that you had happened to stumble upon, which you applied to for fun thinking it was a joke.
Needless to say you were contacted a few days later and were offered ₩50,000 for every call you took, which meant that you could answer at least 4 calls a day and earn ₩200,000 for just talking to people.
You could see how that wasn't really a difficult choice to make.
The best part of the job was that you could do it whenever you were free and because of your hectic schedule, it meant that it was flexible, thus the perfect part time work for you.
You sign into your employee account and wait, knowing that calls would pour in any minute and when your phone rings, you smile amusedly and put your earphones on while tapping the answer button.
"This is the BTS hotline, what can I do for you today?" You ask cheerfully and you hear a loud wail on the other end.
"언니!! (Eonni!!) I CAN'T SLEEP AT NIGHT BECAUSE OF THESE 7 HEARTBREAKERS! HELP MEEE" a disgruntled woman complains and you smile.
"Girl, I feel you...they really need to tone down their charisma..." you start, responding back just as exasperatedly and the conversation continues.
It was nice for you because you could offer your support to the girls, and sometimes guys, who just needed someone to rant to or share their excitement with.
"...*sniff* I don't know what I would've done if you weren't here Eonni!! My boyfriend is tired of listening to me go on about them and my friends are sick of it too...I swear I'm going to end up suing them all because they took over my life..." she finishes explaining with a laugh and you grin.
"Aww, I'm glad I helped though~ If you ever want to talk some more just call again okay?" you ask nicely and you hear her laugh.
"Yeah, thanks again for listening" she softly says and ends the call with a click.
Lowering you phone, you sigh, thinking about how many girls like you were out there, all entranced by the guys and you shake your head.
At least you could offer whatever support you had.
The phone rings again and you pick up.
———————————————
"...so you see? You can't call them talentless because they've achieved so many things in their four years as idols" you explain calmly and you hear a thoughtful hum on the other end.
"...I-I didn't know that..." the man says guiltily and you chuckle, realizing that you may have just converted an anti into an Army.
"Yup. So you think you'll give them a chance now?" You ask thoughtfully and you hear a bubbly laugh.
"Yeah. Guess I was wrong...it's just that my sister always goes on about these weird 'choke me' memes and pairings nowadays so I really didn't know they actually made good music..." he mutters and you choke on air when you process his words.
You laugh nervously, while pushing away any dirty thoughts of all the fanfiction you've been reading and the dirty memes you sometimes go through.
"...uh. That's probably a phase" you respond with an exaggerated laugh, even though you knew it was a lie, and crossed your fingers for the best.
"Mm that's probably true. Haha. Anyways thanks for listening to me bitch without going all psycho on me" he finishes and hangs up.
You laugh amusedly when you think of all the different clients you had, never having a boring day.
Sometimes you got the newbies, who just wanted to know more about the different members and their music.
The diehards were the one who usually called in tears or with extremely bubbly personalities and just wanted to rant to someone about their feelings.
And then there were the haters who either went on and on about how horrible their music was while trying to take it out on you, or the haters who just didn't understand Kpop and could sometimes be converted into liking them -just like the guy you had just finished talking to.
It was definitely interesting trying to keep up with them all.
Your thoughts are cut off when your phone rings again and you answer the call as you scroll through your Facebook feed.
"Hello?" A deep voice says unsurely and you smirk.
"...another man; probably another Anti that I can convince again" you think excitedly.
"Yup. I'm here. What can I do for you?" You ask with a friendly tone and you hear a thud -much like the sound of a person jumping on their bed- as he answered you back.
"This is uh...The BTS hotline right?" He asks and you nod, but forget that he couldn't see you so you sheepishly laugh.
"Yeah. Is everything okay?" You ask, this time in concern at his anxious tone.
"Mmm. I guess so. It's just that I'm kind of obsessed with them and I had no idea who I could talk to about it...none of my friends like BTS so that's out of the picture." He explains and your eyes widen.
That was a surprise. He was actually a fan, not an anti and you raise your brows at the rarity of the situation. This was the first time a guy called and was actually a fan of their music so you fidget anticipatingly.
"Really? That's so cool! I'm a fan as well so you can talk to me about them!" You respond and you hear him laugh deeply.
"Oh? That's interesting...what's your favorite song?" He starts off and the two of you talk more about their different songs, concepts and theories.
He definitely knew a lot about them.
———————————————
"...hmm. I like all the members but I think Jungkook is kind of stuck up..." he nonchalantly says and you gasp loudly.
"What...Bruh no. And here I thought we were finally on the same page. How can you not like Kook??" You ask disbelievingly and hear him hum back dismissively.
"He just gives off that 'I'm too good for anyone' vibe" he replies and your jaw drops while you narrow your eyes.
"Okay listen here buddy. I may not know the dude and I will probably never meet him in my entire life but! One thing I'm sure of is that he's one of the most genuine people you'd ever have the pleasure of getting to know! Just like how the other 6 members are amazing too!" You argue heatedly and a stunned silence greets you, making you freeze.
Oh shit. You weren't supposed to go off on a client like that.
You groan loudly while facepalming ashamedly. You couldn't believe you just lost your shit to a client and wondered why you felt the need to prove him wrong.
A delighted laugh cuts your thoughts off.
"...oh my god. That was extremely refreshing. I don't think I've ever heard a girl get mad at me before." He says, still laughing and you scoff, secretly relieved that he wasn't upset.
"Really now...I find it hard to believe that girls wouldn't get mad at you if you told them you didn't like Kook..." you mumble and you hear him chuckle.
"Mm I guess so. But I don't really see girls much. I travel a lot with my band and they're all guys so I don't have time for much friends." He says wistfully and you frown.
If he traveled a lot he probably didn't get to see his family much or meet his friends so you felt a little bad now for going off on him.
"...oh..I'm sorry then..." you say meaningfully, hoping he could hear your sincerity.
"Nah don't worry about it. I'm used to it. But that's why I decided to try calling. It's refreshing to talk to someone without them knowing who I am and vice versa." He says sweetly and you smile into your phone, agreeing with him.
"Yeah. I like it too, kinda adds some mystery to all this" you add on jokingly and he laughs.
"So you're in a band huh...do you think I'd know it if you told me?" You ask curiously and he ponders on that for a moment.
"Nah. Probably not. We're not so big yet" he says in a measured tone and you smirk.
"Well one day when you're as famous as BTS, don't forget about the girl who you ranted to okay?" You say teasingly and he bursts out into laughter again.
"Yeah yeah..." he mumbles and then you hear someone call for him in the background. "Shoot. I have to go..." he says reluctantly and pauses. "Uhm...if you'd be okay with it...do you maybe want to talk sometimes? Like actually chat, maybe through kakao or something?" He asks hesitatingly and you pause skeptically.
He seemed to have sense your anxiousness because he continued.
"It's just that you're a really sweet person and since I don't have much friends...I just thought it be nice to continue talking. That's all." He explains and you soften, feeling slightly bad for doubting him.
You contemplate once more and sigh.
"Ah what the hell...if he ends up being a creep I'll just block him" you think and give him your katalk username and then he mumbles a hurried 'bye' before the two of you end the call.
"Now that was definitely interesting..." you mused and felt your phone buzz with a new chat notification.
JS: Hmm. Y/N huh...that's a really cute name..
You smile amusedly.
Y/N: and JS is way too vague. I'm starting to think you may not be a musician...probably some old man trying to prey on a college girl.
You typed back and waited.
JS: Hey hey hey. I'll have you know that I can beat all the other members at any sports. There's no way I'm some old creeper. JS just stands for a nickname that I like.
Once you read the message your phone rings, this time as a voice call, so you pick up.
"What do you want creeper?" You ask amusedly and hear him grumble annoyedly.
"Believe what you want...if only you knew who I was" he mumbled childishly and you laugh.
"Yeah alright. Tell me that again when you finally decide to let me know who you are, oh mysterious JS." You retort dryly with a roll of your eyes.
He snorts at your sarcasm but ignores it. "So...you're in college now?" He asks curiously and you hum affirmatively. "Yeah. That's why I work for the hotline. Gotta keep my tuition funds going you know?" You say cheerfully and he ah's in understanding.
"You're probably older than me then..." he muses and you chuckle. "Unless you're born after 1998, I highly doubt that" you respond and he gasps.
"What. No way. So I'm actually older than you..." he says, shocked and you 'tsk'
"Old man. I already knew that...is that your tactic at getting girls to go for you? You really are a creep" you mumble lightheartedly, only teasing him but his reaction was amusing to hear.
"I'm only a year older!" He retorts offendedly and you snicker.
The two of you continued talking, getting to know more about each other.
All of this was thanks to one group that you both had interests in.
———————————————
It was almost a couple months after that fated day and you still continued the part time job for extra cash.
Your friendship with the mysterious JS still went strong too and you lost count of how many times he's called you.
You didn't think it was possible, but you may have been crushing on a man you couldn't put a face or name to, and that had you freaking out slightly.
It didn't seem like he was lying about everything he told you about himself but the fact that he still wouldn't tell you his full name, nor show you his face had you insanely curious.
He did however, add you on Snapchat some time ago so that he could prove he wasn't some pedophile and sent you below-the-chin selfies of himself.
From what you could sometimes see, he was extremely built and that made your heart beat faster.
He already knew what you looked like, because after you made sure he was actually a decent guy, you sent him stupid selfies of yourself.
———————————————
"You live in Seoul right?" He rhetorically asks you and give him a reply of affirmation.
"Hmm...I think it's time that we actually meet then..." he mumbles thoughtfully and you choke on the water you were drinking.
"What? Who are you and what have you done with JS?" You demand and you hear him snort.
"You're such a dork Y/N. I just feel like enough time has passed with you in the dark and I really want to see if you look as terrible in real life as you do in your photos" He explains jokingly and you scoff.
"Bro. If you can't handle me at my stupid faces then you're going to hate seeing me in person" you mumble back and he laughs.
"I'm just teasing stupid. I'm sure you're just as cute in person so shut up." He easily retorts and your heart thuds heavily as you gape at your phone.
He was seriously considering meeting you and a part of you couldn't help but look forward to it.
You've wondered -more times than you could count- what he looked like; if he was as charming in person as he was on the phone, if his band produced good music, did his smile reach his eyes when he laughed, and so much more.
You stay silent for a couple more moments before finally speaking up.
"...so where do you want to do this?" You ask hesitantly.
———————————————
You walk uncertainly, following the map of the cafe JS sent you the directions to.
It seemed to be hidden really well and you were starting to get a bit nervous, wondering if you should turn back or not but then you finally see the sign of the cafe and your body relaxes.
You walk towards it but realize when you come up close, that the sign said 'closed' and you furrow your brows, perplexed, as you double checked if you were at the right place.
The name he sent you matched the sign of the shop so you peer around curiously, apprehensive of what to do next.
Your phone rings.
JS: stop looking around like an idiot and come inside.
You snort and shove your phone in your pocket with a scowl.
"Damn JS. You little..." you grumble.
With a deep breath you push the door open and walk in. The cafe was empty and it didn't look like anyone was inside so you go further.
From the corner of your eyes you see a figure sitting in the deeper end of a booth, staring out the window and you slowly approach him.
That had to be JS.
You shuffle nervously while trying to fix your hair and secretly straighten your outfit. When you finally reach the table you clear your throat loudly and he turns around.
You freeze as your eyes slowly widen in shock.
"What the fuck?" You swear.
The man sitting in front of you was none other than Jeon Jungkook.
You flush when you realize you just swore in front of a man you admired and then stutter while trying to apologize but he only laughs amusedly.
"I-I t-there's a guy I was supposed to meet. Uh...I...uh. You're...Jungkook..." you struggle to get out as you gape in awe.
How very articulate of you. But at that point you were just so overwhelmed that you could care less.
"It's nice to finally see you in person, stupid." Kook says with a wide grin and your mouth drops.
What?
Kook was amused when he finally saw your face shift from confusion, to admiration, to incredulity and now to confusion once more.
He was enjoying every second of his big reveal and was waiting for you to make the connection.
The gears slowly clicked in your mind and your mouth trembles slightly.
"J-JS?" You whisper and Jungkook smiles softly at you. "Bingo" he says with a wink and slowly you move to the chair he motioned you to, and take a seat, unable to take your eyes off of him.
Well you seriously weren't expecting that...
———————————————
After the novelty wore off and you could think once more, you gasp.
"Wait! So you!...the obsession with BTS...your hate for Jungkook-I mean yourself?-" you exclaim and he only grins smugly while nodding.
"Yup...all me" he proudly says and your eyes narrow.
"The band...you traveling a lot...and why you never showed me your face..." you mumble with a groan as it all dawned to you.
You should've put this together a long time ago but you honestly never thought the Jeon Jungkook would ever call a hotline to rant about his own group, much less keep in contact with someone like you...
"Wait...so what does JS stand for?..." you ask and he gives you his widest smile as he leaned forward over the table conspiringly, while gesturing for you to come closer too.
"...My English name" he whispers and you raise your brows.
"What?" You respond with a puzzled look.
He gives you a cocky smirk.
"...Justin Seagull" he whispers again and your eyes widen as you freeze.
After a couple moments in that position, your eyes squeezed shut in disbelief and your lips quirked upwards in a joyful grin, laughing and laughing until you couldn't breathe any longer.
He joined you when he couldn't keep up his poker face any longer and when the two of you finally calmed down, you smiled softly at the man who really was just as you'd imagined.
Genuine and much much better in person.
———————————————
Hey loveeees. Here's the next kookie update!
Now what was the weirdest way you've made a friend? 🤔
I also know it was obvious that it was kookie the entire time, but in Y/Ns perspective, it wasn't that simple. She went through so many different clients and she would have never made the connection between one guy who was similar.
If you enjoyed that please tap the little star in the corner so Kook won't get beaten up by Y/Ns fists ♥️
