21. at the end of the day, nothing beats good food
After the match against the supposed ninja team, Kazemaru had been in such a good mood. He work up feeling energized and ready for school. The teal haired boy left his bed and got cleaned up before dressing in his uniform and leaving the house. On his way to school, he always passed by Park's house. Standing on the sidewalk and wondering if he should wake her up or not was like a morning ritual for him.
Kazemaru stood in the silence, debating in his head. The little angel in his mind encouraged him to go knock on the door. Walking to school with her would be the perfect way to start the morning. He'd have someone to talk to, and listen to. Although the little devil was telling him that Park wanted to sleep in, and should be left alone. It wasn't like Kazemaru to think negative, but he was afraid of rejection. So, the boy was just about to leave and walk to school on his own.
Before Kazemaru could take another step the front door opened. He was fully expecting to see Park rush down the front steps with a slice of toast in her mouth - but it wasn't her. Instead it was Kim
The lovely Kim.
"Oh, Kazemaru! What a surprise to see you!" The woman chirped happily. "Are you waiting for Mio?"
"Y-yeah. I was waiting for her." Kazemaru stammered.
"I was just about to water the plants, but that can wait. Come inside! I'll wake up Mio." Kim wasted no time in stepping down the front stairs and gently taking Kazemaru's wrist in her hands. She didn't give him any time to protest, but it's like not he wanted to protest anyway. He was a little awkward in front of Kim, but it'd be nice to chat with her some more. He wanted to learn more about Park.
"Are you sure it's okay?" Kazemaru still wanted to be kind and make sure he wasn't intruding. Since he knew it was a rule, he took off his shoes before fully entering the house.
"Yes, of course it's alright." Kim shut the door behind him. "Take a seat in the living room, Cho, keep him company!" At that, the woman went ahead and scampered up the stairs to wake her granddaughter.
Kazemaru did as told and sat down in the living room beside Cho. He placed his bag down on the white carpet and started petting the dog. Happy to receive attention, Cho crawled onto Kazemaru's lap and licked his chin.
"You're so sweet," the boy chuckled, scratching behind Cho's ears.
"Okay, she'll be up and ready soon!" Kim said as she made her way back down to the main floor. She walked over to the living room and took a seat on the couch, smiling at how well Kazemaru got along with Cho. "He seems to really like you, I'm glad."
"You think so?" Kazemaru was secretly happy to hear that. "Thank you for letting me come in." He showed the woman a sweet smile, one that was contagious enough to make Kim smile as well.
"You're always welcome here," Kim neatly placed her hands in her lap.
"You're Park's grandmother right? Do you take care of her?" The young boy hoped it was alright to ask. Kim paused for a moment, wondering what the best way to respond was.
"Yes, my husband and I take care of Park. She. . . She has no parents. I'm not sure if she told you this or not." Kim dropped the bomb so easily, but Kazemaru didn't understand.
"No parents? What do you mean?" His first thought was that they died in an accident.
"Park's mother was drunk driving and caused an accident with Park in the car. So, she lost her memory, and her mother gave up on her. My husband and I adopted her, so now she lives with us." Kim put it as simple as possible. "Mio came from a very bad family, so please be nice to her, okay? I'm so glad she's made so many wonderful friends. She means the world to me, and I'm so happy to see her happy."
"I had no idea. . ." Kazemaru muttered. He averted his gaze down to Cho, who he was still stroking. "She's been through a lot."
"Don't let her know that I told you, okay? She'll get really upset, but I felt like I needed to tell someone."
"I won't let her know, I promise." Kazemaru nodded his head.
Just then, Park scampered down the staircase, finally ready. She grabbed a bottle of Pepsi for breakfast, before making her way over to Kim and Kazemaru.
"Mio, you should eat something proper!" Kim scolded her.
"It's okay, I don't have time. I'll eat at lunch." Park responded nonchalantly.
"Your grandmother is right, you should eat a proper breakfast." Kazemaru carefully picked Cho up from his lap and placed him down on the couch. The boy stood up and grabbed his bag, slinging the strap over his shoulder.
"It's okay you two!" Park laughed, "I'm honestly not hungry. Don't worry too much about me."
"Kazemaru, make sure she eats her lunch." Kim pat the boy on the shoulder.
"I will, don't worry." He responded.
At that, the two said goodbye to Kim and Cho, before leaving the house.
After classes, the team spent more time training in the Inabikari center. Park was working more on her control and dribbling of the ball, she tried dribbling the ball around tight posts and hopped over little traps here and there. Slowly but surely she was getting the hang of things.
It was just then that Haruna raced into the center, gasping for air.
"Teikoku!" She shouted, stopping to catch her breath.
"They won!" Endou piped up before even hearing what Haruna had to say. With a bright smile, he gently punched Gouenji's palm that was lifted for a high five. Good work Endou.
"Teikoku. . ." Haruna trailed off. "They lose to Zeus."
"What!?" Endou's voice vibrated the entire room.
After managing to hear what Haruna said, Park looked over to the girl, ending up smashing into one of the posts.
"Ow! Shit!" The white haired girl checked her nose for blood, but she seemed just fine. Shaking it off, she went over to the others to hear what else Haruna had to say.
"Teikoku lost ten to zero. Onii-chan didn't even get a chance to play because of his ankle." Haruna sniffled, she lifted her glasses to quickly wipe her eyes. "Zeus completely wrecked them. Everyone on Teikoku was injured even worse than Onii-chan was. They're all in the hospital now."
Everyone was in utter shock. The all mighty Teikoku couldn't score a single point? Zeus wasn't even in the last FF, so how were they so strong all of a sudden? Where did they even come from?
Park furrowed her brows, She stepped over to Haruna and gave the girl a hug, which was greatly appreciated. Haruna instantly returned the hug.
"Thank you Park-Senpai. . ." The younger girl uttered.
"Haruna, why don't we go and visit everyone in the hospital? Come to my house, let's make them something nice to eat." Park pulled away and held both of Haruna's shoulders. She mustered an encouraging smile for the girl. "Maybe we'll see your brother, too. He'll be happy to see you."
"Okay." Haruna nodded. "Thank you."
After practice, Haruna followed Park to her house. As soon as they got in, they took their shoes off and Cho began inspecting.
"Oh my goodness! Your dog is so cute!" Haruna was instantly smiling again. Cho had that effect on everyone, he brought joy to people without even trying.
"His name is Cho! You can pet him and pick him up if you'd like." Park chirped. "Halmeoni! I brought a friend!" The whitette called out (Halmeoni means Grandmother in Korean).
"Hello!" Kim stepped into the house, coming in from the back door. She was most likely tending to the garden, all he precious plants. "Hi darling, I'm Mio's Grandmother! My name is Park Kim Sun, but please just call me Kim, or Sunny!"
"That's such a pretty name!" Haruna smiled brightly as she crouched down to pet Cho. "It's nice to meet you Sunny."
"I'll leave you two girls alone, have fun!" Kim beamed. The woman then went into the backyard again, leaving the house nice and quiet. Jae was out there with her as well, so Park and Haruna could do as they liked.
"Come, I'll show you how to make kimbap," Park gestured Haruna to follow after her into the kitchen.
"What's kimbap?" Haruna picked up Cho and walked after Park.
"It's like sushi, actually. Although there are more things inside the roll." Park responded, grabbing all the ingredients from the fridge and cabinet.
"Oh, okay!" Haruna set Cho down, and quickly washed her hands alongside Park.
The two girls made rice and cut up ingredients to put inside. Park showed Haruna how to toast the seaweed on the stove carefully, saying it tastes better that way. They placed everything neatly onto the seaweed, and rolled it up perfectly with the bamboo mat. They then brushed the rolls with sesame oil and chopped them into bite sized pieces.
Park and Haruna made their way to the hospital, and into the first room with a few players from Teikoku. The first room had only Genda and Sakuma, and they both looked extremely upset.
". . . Excuse me?" Park gently knocked at the door, as Haruna hid behind her. Both Sakmua and Genda looked over to the two girls, for a second they weren't recognizable, but it then hit them.
"Raimon? What are you two doing here?" Sakuma asked, trying to sit up in his bed, but instantly regretted it as he winced in pain.
"We thought we'd come by for a visit." Park walked into the room, Haruna following suit. "Is everyone managing alright? How bad are their injuries?" The white haired girl asked as she and Haruna set down the boxes of kimbap on the nearby bedside table.
"They're all banged up pretty bad." Sakuma grumbled. "It took ten minutes for us to all be rendered useless on the field."
"That must have been so hard. . ." Haruna muttered, an obvious frown on her face.
"It was the most embarrassing and degrading moment of my life!" Sakuma snapped. His suddenly louder tone of voice scared Haruna a little, but Park understood how upset he was.
"I can't believe an unknown team was strong enough to do this. . ." Haruna said, looking down at the ground.
"Can you tell us anything about Zeus?" Park felt bad to ask, but she wanted to know.
"There's not much to say asides from how ridiculously strong they were." Genda responded quietly. "Their captain had long blonde hair and red eyes. I've never seen him before."
"Hang in there you two." Park furrowed her brows, mustering an apologetic smile for their sake. "You'll get back at them one day. You'll heal up and get out of this hospital, and you'll get revenge." She tried to encourage them.
"Park-senpai is right!" Haruna piped up.
"Right. . ." Sakuma muttered. "We'll get our revenge."
"In the meantime, have something to eat." Park handed a lunch box, as well as a pair of chopsticks to each Sakuma and Genda.
