(1) A Flicker of Light
One Shot
*SMASH*
Your fist throbbed from where you hit it against the metal frame of your bed.
"GET OUT!" You growl, venom dripping in every word you uttered.
The nurse drops the tray of food in surprise and it clatters onto the floor.
It was especially loud to you now and you flinch.
You could feel her hesitate but then hear the clacking of footsteps and the soft thud the door makes when it closes, yet you remained stiff, unable to relax.
With your eyes closed, everything around you was dark, black, and full of emptiness that slowly suffocated you from within.
With a miniscule amount of hope, you slowly opened them and looked around the room but your heart drops.
The world crashed at your feet.
Everything around you was darker than black and a void that you couldn't see past.
You couldn't breathe.
You clench your fist painfully tight and bite back a bitter cry of disappointment when everything fully registered.
You really were blind
———————————————
"I'm sorry Y/N...after going through the results of your checkup, we discovered a cluster of nerves pinching the portion of your brain connected to your sight. After further probing we were able to connect this to a rare condition that will gradually deteriorate your vision, which is why you've been having these major migraines. This will continue until you completely go...blind...I'm truly sorry..." the doctor explains with a pitiful stare.
You laugh amusedly, not buying a single word he said. "Okay doc, that was actually funny. Now really, why do I feel like someone's constantly bashing my head in with a bat?" You ask with a wry smile.
He continues to stare at you seriously and slowly your smile dies down into a frown.
"D-doc. Come on...you're kidding right?...I...that's not even possible! I have perfect vision, how can I be going blind?! This is a mistake...you probably have someone else's file...I just came in to get some medication for headaches..." you explain hysterically and with quivering hands, you reach out for the test papers on his desk to make sure.
He stays silent, glancing down at his hands, because one of the hardest part in his field of work was always when he had to deliver bad news; he knew how difficult this would be for you to absorb.
As your eyes trailed over the results, you see the words blur and realize it was from the tears building up in your eyes.
There was no mistaking it...those were your health details and your personal information so it couldn't have been wrong...
You breathe in shakily. "H-how long..." you ask despondently, recalling the sudden flashes of dark spots that would appear with most of the major headaches you had gotten, and he grits his teeth.
"...a week...maybe two...the migraines you're having now will only get worse and you'll start to experience rapid loss of vision...I can prescribe you something for the pain...but as for your sight, t-there's nothing we can do..." he said, and the words leave a bitter taste in his mouth when he watches your expression fall despairingly.
Your hope was effectively crushed and this time you don't try to hold back your tears.
You hated crying in front of people, but today you'd make an exception.
———————————————
After the nurse had left, you sit on the bed, feeling more alone and scared than you had in your entire life.
You realize how much things you had taken for granted.
Picturing the pastel blues and oranges of the sky and the lush greens of the land seemed so difficult now that everything was muted in black because your imagination could only do so much...
Even the little things like not being able to tie your hair, walking without support, or even feeding yourself was a challenge. Every single one of those actions relied on being able to see.
You had no one. No family, no friends and now even your own body had betrayed you.
If there was such thing as the lowest moment in one's life, you were sure this was it.
Was it even possible to continue living normally anymore?
.
.
.
You had to try...it just wasn't like you to give up and so you grip onto the sheets tightly with a new resolve.
———————————————
"아이씨! (Aish!) could you be any rougher?" Jin says with a scowl as he limped into the hospital and Namjoon shoots him an unamused look.
"You really want me to answer that?" He asks, still supporting the injured Jin.
Thankfully for Joon, he didn't respond.
Namjoon was filling out some papers as he watched Jin get ushered into a wheelchair. He was being brought to the X-ray room in order to see how bad his sprain was.
With a sigh Namjoon stands and hands the form back to one of the nurses before deciding to check out the area since he had nothing better to do.
———————————————
Your heart was beating a mile per minute as you tried to defy every part of your body telling you that what you were doing was a horrible idea.
You just couldn't accept the fact that you would have to rely on what they said could either be a walking cane or a seeing eye dog.
Not to mention that you no longer could watch movies, read or write and that broke you.
This was you being immaturely stubborn, but you couldn't help it.
With a determined grimace, you tried to figure out where the wall was and used it to guide you out to the hallway.
This took you much longer than you had wanted but by the time you left the room, you felt more stable on your feet.
The hallway was a whole other level however, as you couldn't tell what would be on the floor, so you stick your feet out tentatively and take baby steps.
About a couple steps later and with no real plan in mind, you try to feel for anything that would tell you where you were.
Unfortunately that was when someone crashed into you, making you lose your balance and your steady placement on the wall.
"Oh shit!" You hear a man scream.
It was an interesting feeling; you were unable to picture how far off the floor you were but the momentum of you falling had you dizzy anyways.
———————————————
Namjoon hadn't meant to crash into you but was able to react almost instantaneously, grabbing you by the waist and successfully stopping you before you fell.
He breathed out deeply, taking relief in successfully preventing an accident -and in a hospital no less- if the boy's found out, they'd never let him live it down.
You tremble, unable to figure out where everything was Anymore and that scared you because you needed to be in control of your surroundings.
Namjoon narrows his eyes. Something about you was off. You were shaking like you had seen something horrible...
"I can't be that intimidating right?..." He thinks confusedly and then suddenly you raised your head.
He inhales sharply when he watched you dart your head around nervously. However that's not what caught your attention, it was your unfocused gaze that had him furrowing his eyebrows.
"She...she..." his thought trails off but he had enough sense not to point out the obvious, so he cleared his throat loudly to catch your attention.
The last thing he wanted to do was make it seem like he pitied you and so he tried his best to avoid bringing up the sensitive issue.
"I-I'm so sorry. I should have been more careful..." he mumbled apologetically and you turned your head in the direction of the man's voice.
"It's fine...I should have watched where I was-" you speak up and then cringe at your wordplay.
Of course you had to fuck up by making it obvious that you couldn't see for shit but then he chuckles lightly, making you pause in surprise.
That was certainly a new reaction.
He gazed at you amusedly, noting how cute you looked in his arms. His smile softened when he studied your dainty features, silky hair and also the way your nose scrunched softly in confusion.
Despite your condition, he thought your eyes were beautiful.
Suddenly he blushed. "Shit...I'm such a creep...I'm checking out a girl without her even knowing. I swear this is a new low..." he thinks, internally groaning and shaking his head in shame.
Completely ignorant from where his thoughts were trailing off to, you try to smile.
Even though he was the man who had knocked you over, he at least saved you from smacking your face against the floor pathetically.
He chortled and you frown.
"...why are you laughing?" You ask, a touch bit petulantly and you hear him huff.
"You look constipated" he tactlessly retorts and you inhale in shock.
Namjoon studies your expression carefully, hoping that what he was trying to do would work.
He had spoken in hopes of helping you forget about your problem, if only momentarily.
He wasn't an idiot though, you didn't actually look terrible but he knew that if he was in your position, he'd want people to treat him normally. And so he would try his best to deliver.
You stood still, wondering if you had heard him right or if you were maybe going deaf now too.
Mustering as much of an incredulous look in your sightless eyes as you could, you stare -at where you hoped he was- unabashedly.
Namjoon flinches.
Nope. It totally backfired. He could feel the awkwardness in the air but he tried to laugh it off.
"I-I mean. Not constipated in a bad way...more like a good way. I mean you're extremely beautiful with that look." He stutters and you smile amusedly to yourself because him being flustered was actually quite...endearing.
He slaps his cheeks. "Y-you know what. I'm just going to shut up now..." he mutters and finally you break out into a carefree laughter.
His eyes widen and if he thought you were pretty earlier, you were absolutely breathtaking when you radiated joy.
Your laughter dies down and you grin with your eyes shut. "I don't think I-I've laughed that hard in a while" you giggle while struggling to breathe.
His eyes soften, happy that he was able to help you, even though he didn't do much.
You smile amiably.
You had a feeling he was trying his best not to bring up your sensitive situation but that was like trying to ignore an elephant sitting in a room: impossible.
So you did the both of you a favor and got it out of the way.
"I'm Y/N and I'm blind; but that's kind of debatable at this point since you were the one who crashed into me..." you point out with one brow raised and you hear him laugh embarrassedly.
He messes with his hair. "Yeah...about that...I don't usually assault people like that in broad daylight...I'm sorry" he responds back with a slightly guilty tone and you laugh.
"Only at night right?" You joke and he chuckles.
"Definitely. Oh! I'm Namjoon by the way" he says, now realizing that he didn't introduce himself earlier.
You nod thoughtfully as you mouthed his name, wishing you could imagine a face to go with it, but reluctantly accepting the fact that that would never happen again.
You quickly shrug away the depressing thoughts that threatened to take over, and looked in his direction with a sly smile.
"I'd say it's nice to see you but that'd be kind of ironic so yeah..." you casually say and his mouth drops in surprise.
He recovers quickly. "Uhm. Don't worry, you're not missing out on much haha. I'm not exactly handsome or anything..." he says humbly while gently helping you off the floor and you laugh.
"That's what all the good looking people say so I don't think I'll take your word for it" you reply teasingly.
"Yeah, yeah. Think what you will" he says sarcastically and you chuckle. He peers around you and realized that you were wondering out by yourself.
"Do you...need help getting back to where you were heading?" He offers hesitantly and your first reaction was to refuse but you stop yourself.
Maybe sometimes it was okay to let people help you.
———————————————
It was a month after your recent change of lifestyle and so far you had mastered Braille and finally relented into getting a service dog to help you out
You were now in your apartment that had everything meticulously placed for your convenience, and you bite into an apple while petting your dog.
"Yeah okay ignore me...who cares?" A voice piques up and you snort.
Namjoon peers down at you unamused.
———————————————
After he had helped you out that day, he had made it his mission to become your friend despite how badly you refused in the beginning.
You had initially thought that he was just trying to be nice, but eventually his stubbornness won and you gave in, making him an addition to your sedentary lifestyle.
———————————————
You open your mouth to retort but your phone rings. Namjoon places it on your palms and you murmur a quick thanks.
You pick up. "Yeah?" You ask curtly, waiting for someone to greet you back.
"Y/N...we might be able to get your sight back" your doctor says, cutting straight to the point.
Your breath hitched.
"What?..." you mumble in disbelief and so he explained, telling you about an experimental operation that was aimed to treat patients with your condition, but because it was in its trial stage, it meant there was room for failure. Despite that, he decided to offer it to you anyways.
You gulp, now reconsidering everything. If you had a chance, a chance to see again, you would take it in a heartbeat.
If it also meant that you could finally see the man who stuck by your side unwaveringly, you'd go through hell and back to make it happen.
"...when can I come in?"
———————————————
You lay anxiously on the hospital bed that was being wheeled into the O.R as Namjoon held onto your hand tightly.
He sees you fidget restlessly. "Hey...listen to me okay? No matter what happens, I'll be here when you come out so don't worry" he says soothingly and you smile softly with a slight nod.
Reluctantly, he let's go of your hand.
———————————————
"Okay...I-I'm going to unwrap the bandage now.." he mumbles and you feel his hand tenderly brush your hair away.
You freeze and grab his hands, making him stop.
"W-wait Joon..." you whisper and he watches you expectantly.
"C-can I...can I feel you?...just in case this doesn't work...I want to be able to 'see' what you look like..." you mumble looking down meekly.
After a couple of moments in silence, you wince, assuming that he took it the wrong way and open your mouth to apologize but he suddenly grabs your hand.
He lifts it steadily and your, now shaking hands, land on something smooth and warm, making you inhale sharply.
Tentatively let your fingers roam, softly caressing his hair. You trail down his forehead, brushing along his closed lids and then his nose hesitantly, before lightly grazing your thumb against his lips.
You feel him tense slightly and you immediately withdraw your hands, thinking you went too far but he grasps them before you could completely pull away.
The two of you stay still, neither one taking a breath, in case you'd ruin the moment.
You almost jumped out of your seat when you felt his lips press against yours so lightly, that you could have mistaken it for a feather.
He pulled away and you shoot him a watery smile, thankful that no matter what happened after this, he'd still be there for you.
With one last deep breath you unwrap the bandage around your eyes and feel the cloth fall into your lap.
You held your breath and little by little your eyes fluttered open.
.
.
.
.
.
...yet everything was still black.
You grit your teeth painfully, berating yourself for actually hoping that things could have changed.
Your entire body shakes in agony and although you couldn't see it, Namjoon cried with you.
He pulled you in close and you laughed bitterly.
"I'm not going anywhere and we'll get through this together. I promise." He whispers feverently and you only nod, truly believing him.
If there was one thing you could count on, it was the unwavering support from one man who made your dark world flicker slightly with light.
