Atlantis
The mission with Kent Nelson, the clay monster, and the Bialyan Desert quickly come and go. The twins weren't affected by the memory loss, but Kaldur was the last to regain his memories, and he was all dried out from the dry desert. The team just got back from the desert.
"...We don't have to head home right away," Artemis says.
"I am fine and will soon return home myself," Kaldur says.
"Recognized: Robin, B01. Kid Flash, B02. Artemis, B09."
They disappear as Kaldur turns to the occupants of the cave. "I am returning to Atlantis now and was wondering if you four would care to accompany me."
"We'd love to! I mean, I would..." Megan says.
"Sounds nice," Spook says.
"I don't mind," Phantom says.
"Thought you just went," Superboy scoffs.
"Yes, but I need—I want, to return more often," Kaldur says.
"So why wait to ask until after the others took off?" Superboy asks.
"I do not like to play games... but our friends would not do well with the extreme pressure at the bottom of the ocean. It seemed kinder not to make the offer in their presence."
"Whatever, let's go," Superboy says, walking towards the zeta tube.
"Actually, I thought we could take the scenic route," Kaldur says, heading to the hangar.
They load up onto the bioship and watch as the scene changes to a beautiful underwater temple.
"Oh wow! So pretty!" Spook and Phantom say with awe.
"Welcome to my birthplace. The Atlantean city-state of Shayeris."
"It's spectacular!" Megan exclaims.
Megan stands up and everyone looks down at her.
"Did you get shorter?" Phantom asks.
"It's the pressure. Even the bioship is smaller at this depth," Megan says.
"I hope you experience no discomfort..." Kaldur says.
"I'm fine, honest!" Megan says.
"Good, I have stocked the hold with more appropriate attire and rebreathers," Kaldur says.
"None for me, thanks," Megan says, transforming her neck into gills.
"Gills, nice touch," Phantom says.
Superboy is the only one who needed to wear a rebreather as they all exit the bioship. Kaldur leads the way.
'This is my parents' home, my home,' Kaldur telepathically says.
They enter the sea building to greet his parents. They speak in a language unknown to the ghost twins, so Megan pitches them in with her psychic abilities.
"Kaldur, you look thin," a gorgeous blonde woman greets, grasping both of Kaldur's hands.
"Mother, please..."
"Sha'lain'a let the boy breathe," a bald dark skinned male says.
"My friends, these are my parents, Sha'lain'a and Calvin Durham. Mother, father, meet Superboy, Phantom, Spook, and Miss Martian," Kaldur introduces.
"Please, call me M'gann."
"You speak Atlantean!" Calvin exclaims.
"Not really, but my psychic abilities enable me to translate and communicate," Megan says.
"G-gnomes programmed me to speak Atlantean," Superboy says.
"I'm sure we could learn Atlantean," Spook says. "We already know many languages."
"I understand you, yet have no idea what that means..." his mother says unsure.
Calvin and Kaldur go off and talk. After having dinner, Megan, Superboy, and the ghost twins return to the bioship to sleep, waiting for the next morning. The next morning arrives and off the five head to Poseidonis. They stand behind Kaldur as he salutes to the queen in respect.
"Kaldur, it is an honor to finally meet your friends and teammates," Queen Mera says.
"The honor is all ours, Queen Mera. I lived on Mars my whole life without ever meeting a member of the royal family!" Megan says gleefully.
"There's a certain wisdom in inaccessibility when the queen carries the heir to the throne," a new voice says, entering the room.
Spook takes notice of the way the male says this, automatically not trusting him. His aura is tainted.
"Allow me to introduce Prince Orm, my overprotective brother-in-law," Queen Mera says.
"How can I be anything else, while my brother is off playing Aquaman?" Prince Orm says with slight disdain, not going unnoticed by the twins.
"King Orin's work with the Justice League is anything but a game, my prince," Kaldur says.
"Of course. Still, I am glad you and your fellow champions are here, Kaldur'ahm... there have been reports of unrest originating at the Conservatory of Sorcery," Prince Orm says.
That's the next place the five of them go to meet some of Kaldur's old friends.
The first friend he introduces to them is Ronal, someone Spook automatically doesn't trust. Ronal is a human Atlantean with Caucasian skin, blond hair and blue eyes. He has sharp facial features. He wears a formfitting suit which consists of green knee-length pants and a matching green sleeveless shirt. The thigh and chest parts of his clothes are black, set off by golden bands.
The next friend he introduces us to is Blubber. One could see the differences with him and a few others. Blubber is a whale that talks.
The third friend is named Lori Lemaris, who's a mermaid. She has long brown hair held back loosely by braids and a headband, light amber colored eyes and a slender frame. On her top half she wears a red and maroon tunic with dual-layered epaulettes, silver arm braces and an additional red armlet on her upper left arm.
The fourth is named La'gann. He's a male Atlantean with amphibious adaptations. He has green skin, red eyes and webbed ears, claws, and feet. He has dark green fins on his head and is wearing black shorts.
The final friend is named Nanaue Sha'ark but prefers the name King Sha'ark. If it's not obvious, he's a huge shark who can also talk.
"You're all so different..." Megan says amazed.
"Millennia ago, Atlanteans were all surface-dwelling humans... until the continent sank. By necessity, our ancestors used science and sorcery to adapt to live beneath the waves. Since then, the populace of each city-state has evolved along its own course," Kaldur explains.
"Now, Atlantis is a continent of diversity and our capital, Poseidonis, is the most diverse of all," Ronal says.
"While the conservatory draws the best and the brightest from throughout Atlantis," Kaldur says.
"It's wonderful!" Megan exclaims. "My world could take lessons, should take lessons."
"And are you four typical of the surface?" La'gann asks, swimming up to the three.
Megan goes over to Lori, the mermaid, and shapeshifts into a mermaid like her, causing Lori to be somewhat uncomfortable.
"Not exactly..." Superboy says.
"Megan is a martian from Mars," Phantom says.
"I'm a clone of Superman," Superboy grunts.
"Basically his son," Spook corrects. "This is my twin brother, we're ghosts. We're not actually alive."
"Freaky, dude," La'gann says.
Phantom floats over to Megan with a smirk.
"They must be telepathically flirting or something," Spook scoffs.
Superboy and Spook share a chuckle before Ronal rudely announces his departure.
"Well, this has been... charming... but I should go," Ronal says, swimming away.
"What's the matter, chum? Feeling outnumbered?" Sha'ark taunts.
La'gann quickly dismisses it and asks us another question. "So, what's it really like on the surface?"
"Other than drier?" Blubber adds.
"And tastier. Know what I mean, chum?" Sha'ark asks with a wide smile, hovering over Spook.
"If you even try to eat me, I will blast your insides out," Spook warns, lighting her fist with a purple glow, heating the water around her fist and causing it to bubble.
Sha'ark gives her a wary look.
"Kaldur!" two new voices shout.
"M'gann, Superboy, Spook, Phantom, these are my dearest friends, Tula and Garth," Kaldur says, noticing the joined hands of the two.
Megan's voice appears in Superboy, Phantom, and Spook's minds. 'So that's why he brought us...'
'What do you mean?' Superboy asks.
'Isn't it obvious?' Spook replies. 'Kaldur's in love with Tula. It radiates off him in waves.'
'But she's with Garth, and Kaldur couldn't bear to face them alone...' Megan finishes.
"Topo?" Kaldur asks, looking aside to see a squid-faced boy quickly swimming by. Kaldur rushes up to grab his arm. "Topo, I want you to meet my friends..."
"Uh... maybe some other time..." Topo says as Kaldur turns him around to face Kaldur.
"What is this?" Kaldur asks, seeing the burn marks on his chest. "Topo! Who did this to you?!"
Lori, La'gann, and Blubber cut in and take Topo away from Kaldur. Spook tenses up as she can feel the atmosphere drastically change.
"It does not concern you, Kaldur'ahm," Lori says, pulling Topo away.
"Ah, Squidboy's chum, and chum gets what it deserves. Swallowed," Sha'ark says, heading after them.
"I couldn't read those markings," Superboy says.
"Those are ancient Atlantean runes..." Tula says.
"Spelling what?" Superboy asks.
"Impure," Tula answers.
They all look at each other.
"It seems like this little trip is going to be a lot more work than expected," Spook sighs. "Here I was hoping we could go sightseeing."
They all quickly head in the direction the others were going.
"Speak to me of Topo," Kaldur commands.
"He was a victim of the purists. They consider themselves the direct descendants of the original Atlanteans," Garth says.
"And attempt to scare anyone they consider impure into leaving Poseidonis," Tula finishes.
"What qualifies as impure?" Phantom asks.
"Yeah, you all breathe water," Spook says.
"Tula and I appear human and thus are considered pure," Garth says. "Same I figure for Spook and Phantom."
"But that's because we don't need to breathe," Spook says.
"Doesn't matter," Tula says. "They don't know that."
"But my gills render me impure," Kaldur says.
"But only by the most rigid and ridiculous standards!" Tula huffs.
"But I was just here, and there was no word of this..."
"The old prejudices have always lurked under the surface, Kaldur..." Tula says.
"But the clash between skin and scales, flesh and fins has escalated rapidly and seemingly without cause into violence and intimidation," Garth says.
"LET GO OF ME!!"
They swim up to see two sides the supposed pure and impure. They all see Sha'ark holding Ronal by his collar.
"Sha'ark! What are you doing with Ronal?!" Kaldur shouts.
"Preparing dinner," he replies.
"You will let him go!" Spook shouts, shooting a beam between them.
"Careful, Earther! Come between a shark and his meal, and you become the meal!"
"Try me, instead. You'll break your teeth, chum," Superboy snarls.
"Who started this?!" Kaldur shouts.
"They did!" Lori and Ronal shout.
"My friends and I were minding our own business when the fish-heads attacked us!" Ronal huffs.
"And what was Topo doing when you and your friends attacked him?!" Lori shouts, gripping Topo's arm.
"Please, leave me out of this..." Topo pleads.
"You cannot know that was us!" Ronal huffs.
"But if your kind like not your treatment here, you are welcome to leave Poseidonis!" a human-looking Atlantean woman says.
"This is not your concern, Earther," Sha'ark growls at Superboy.
Tula, Garth, and Kaldur swim up in between the two rivaling teams, powers ready. "But it is ours!" Kaldur shouts.
"C'mon, chum. Let's swim," Sha'ark says and everyone splits away.
Kaldur sighs in what can be seen as both anger and sadness. "It's been a long day, we should head back and rest up for tomorrow," Kaldur says after a moment.
Garth and Tula bid them farewell, and they head to the place they're staying.
"We sleep in these?" Phantom asks upon arriving, looking at the sleeping pods.
"Perhaps you'd prefer the bioship to sleeping in Atlantean pods?" Kaldur suggests.
"I'd be fine... if you'd stop calling them pods," Superboy complains.
"I prefer this, Kaldur, it reminds me of being back in the womb," Megan says happily.
"Weird," Spook says.
"How do you even remember what that feels like?" Phantom asks.
Suddenly Kaldur sits up and speaks some kind of Atlantean language in shock.
"Kaldur, what's wrong?" Megan asks worriedly.
"The queen is in trouble!" Kaldur shouts and blasts out the room.
The others look at each other before they quickly follow after.
"I'm placing my bets on the prince!" Spook whispers to Phantom.
"I'm putting mine on Ronal," Phantom says back.
"Good call," Spook says. "You're getting better at reading people."
"I learned from the best," Phantom replies with a smile.
The team of five head all the way to the palace and enter.
"Now is not the time for jokes," Kaldur says. "There! It is Ocean Master! And he has the queen!" He speaks back to Atlantean. "Hold, traitors!"
"Isn't it supposed to be halt?" Spook asks, getting ready to pummel some lackeys. "And who said they were joking?"
They each take down a lackey and chase after Ocean Master.
"Release Queen Mera! Unhand her!" Kaldur shouts.
"Delay them!" Ocean Master responds. They continue to take out hooded soldiers as they all continue after Ocean Master. "You know where to take her."
"You will not take her anywhere!" Kaldur shouts.
"So now the fish-head issues commands?" Ocean Master taunts. "A little time among royalty, and he believes himself royal as well. But proximity does not create majesty, fish-head. Nor wisdom, apparently. The royal palace has spells in place, allowing only the use of defensive magic." He strikes everyone with a powerful electric attack that the twins phase through and turn invisible. "But outside the palace is quite a different story." He disappears in a bright flash of light.
"Shit, he got away!" Phantom shouts.
"Language, fratello!" Spook huffs.
"Not like you don't use it," Phantom grumbles. "Besides, I'm the older of the two! I should be fussing with you!"
"Quit your fussing! We need to help our team," Spook says, heading over to Superboy.
"Phantom! Spook!" a voice calls out to us. They turn to see Prince Orm swimming up to them and the twins narrow their eyes, recognizing his aura being the same as Ocean Master. "Are you okay? Oh, no. Kaldur..."
"How is it you know exactly where we were, huh?" Spook scoffs, getting in the prince's face.
"You dare threaten me, the prince?"
"I don't give a rat's ass what your title is!" Spook shouts. "I am so on to you. Don't misstep."
"We need to get Kaldur and the others some medical attention," Prince Orm says, giving Spook a slight glare.
"Hopefully not from you," Spook huffs, glaring right back.
They leave, taking the fallen team with and returning to the castle. A few hours later, Kaldur and the others finally begin to wake up.
"Kaldur'ahm!" Prince Orm exclaims, rushing to his side. "Kaldur?"
"Unhhh..." Kaldur groans, clutching his head.
"Kaldur, are you alright?!" Prince Orm frantically asks.
"Prince Orm?" Kaldur says, sitting up confused and gasps. "The queen!"
They gather around a holographic table.
"I have sent word to King Orin, but Aquaman is on a mission with the Justice League and cannot be reached."
"Bullshit! You didn't even try!" Phantom scoffs. "We've been with you this whole time!"
"I did it before I found you," the prince retorts smoothly. "Anyway, it is up to us to save our queen."
"And the heir she carries," Kaldur says.
"Of course," Prince Orm says. "Now, my sources inform me of two possible purist strongholds but as members of the royal guard may have been complicit in the abduction. I will investigate one location with the few guards I trust implicitly while you and your four surface friends investigate the other."
Phantom, Megan, and Connor begin to leave as Spook and Kaldur remain behind.
"Agreed, but swim carefully, Prince Orm, Ocean Master is formidable and dangerous!"
After about 50 minutes, the team arrives at the area they were sent.
"Something is off," Spook says.
"According to Prince Orm, one of the purist strongholds is deep within this trench," Kaldur says. "So stay alert."
The ghosts and Superboy hear a loud cracking sound. "Watch out!" they shout and tackle Megan and Kaldur out of the way. The giant boulder crashes down in front of them.
"Ambush!" Spook shouts. "I bet this wouldn't have happened if we went to the other destination."
They get pummeled with magic power and the twins put up a force field. Suddenly the hooded figures are attacked by another magic power coming from Kaldur's old schoolmates. Garth, La'gann, Blubber, Lori, Sha'ark, and Tula all begin attacking. They all quickly take down the soldiers and let one escape so Spook and Megan can follow after him.
They follow him to a cave and sneak in behind him.
"So you used us... played on our prejudices and used us to destroy king and country!" The purist pulls down his hood to reveal Ronal. "Forgive me my queen."
"No, Ronal, forgive me. I am a cliché, rattling off my plans for all to hear and shattering your faith in me, but what is done is done," Ocean Master says.
"It is you that is done!" Ronal shouts and uses his sorcery to create a water eel.
"I think not," Ocean Master says, turning the fish against Ronal. "On my worst day, I am certainly capable of defeating one of Mera's little students and this is far from my worst day." Megan moves to telekinetically move his trident that's sucking up the queen's power away from him. "What sorcery is this?! Who seeks to rip the trident from the Ocean Master's grasp?!" He eventually finds Megan and electrocutes her. "Ah, Kaldur's martian surface-dweller!"
"No!" Spook shouts.
"Fortunately, I know how to deal with martians. They cannot take the heat!" Ocean Master continues and heats up the water around her as she screams in pain. Phantom, Kaldur, Superboy, and the others enter.
"Leave her alone!" Phantom shouts, blasting a combined ectobeam with Spook.
Ocean Master deflects it with a blast of his own and shoots Spook before she can phase through it.
"I'm gonna tear you apart for that!" Superboy screams.
"And the Kryptonian surfacer too, so powerful..." Ocean Master says. "And yet so vulnerable!" He blasts the rebreather on Superboy into bits.
Superboy grabs at his throat. "Can't... breathe..."
"You cannot fight us all, villain!" Tula shouts.
He blasts a beam that goes around the whole area, blasting everyone back. "Are you so sure of that, child?!"
Spook takes notice of Superboy and quickly heads over to him. "I've got you Superboy!" She doesn't hesitate to press her lips to his to give him air. Time seems to stop as Superboy slowly begins to get his senses back.
Ocean Master seems to back down and disappear, releasing his hold on the queen. Superboy's breathing returns to normal and Spook quickly backs away, blush present across her cheeks.
The next day comes after a night's rest, and they report to the throne room.
"Once again, Atlantis and its king owe you a great debt, Kaldur'ahm," Aquaman says.
"And rest assured, I will deal with the traitorous sources that led us into ambush," Prince Orm says.
"Yeah, sure you will..." the ghosts mumble.
"Thank you, both. Now, we should return to the surface world for these four begin Earth school this very morning," Kaldur says.
"Holy crap!" the twins shout. "We completely forgot about that!"
