elephant's memory

Derek's mother and his two sisters were in town seeing the new additions to the family; meaning Genesis and Tyler. Genesis loved it as Derek's sister Desiree loved her niece, Tyler was obviously the quiet one, as these are people that he never met before, but Fran (his mother), assured him that it was okay. Outside of saying hi, and doing small talk everyone knew it was going to take a while to get through Tyler.

Of course the fun times were ended when Derek's phone rang which meant one thing that him and Maya didn't want to do right now: work.

"Go, save people and catch the bad guys." Genesis says as Desiree was currently giving said little girl way too much sugar she should be having at nine in the morning. But anyway. Derek and Maya said bye to everyone and then they got into the car and Maya took a breath, as they had to hurry and practically run to the car.

"That was, ugh." Maya says as she took a deep breath, as Derek got out of the drive way, and they turned the street corner.

"Good, Mama?" He asked her as of course he had his sunglasses on which made him look hot. Maya's words exactly.

"It's almost nine thirty in the morning and I need a nap." Maya says as she grabbed her four rings that she had and individually putting them on her fingers, as she had Derek told them in his hand. For no particular reason whatsoever.

"That's the sad part." Derek said which earned a flick on the shoulder from his girlfriend. "Ow, that doesn't mean you can hit me."

"I didn't hit you, I flicked you. Dummy." Maya commented as Derek gave her a look.

"Keep talking and you're gonna get it, missy." He said as after he said that Maya stuck out her tongue, and he went to jokingly grab it and she swatted his hand away.

"Mine, get away." She says which made him chuckle with his famous smile that Maya could just stare at all day if she could. Scratch that, for the rest of her life.

The two adult children got into the BAU, and on the elevator where they were still bickering and teasing each other. When they got out of the elevator Maya held her hand up like she was going to hit him and when they saw Penelope they acted like they did nothing wrong.

"Where were you two?" Said Penelope, as she held Maya's coffee from the coffee place across the street.

"Thank you, Ma'am." Maya says as Penelope nods her head.

"My mom and my sisters Desiree and Sarah are in town, as they wanted to finally meet Ty, and Genesis." Derek says as Penelope had her famous smile on her face.

"What are you thinking in that twisted mind of yours?" Maya asked, as she took a sip of her iced coffee.

"I was thinking of nicknames for Genesis, I found the perfect one." Penelope says.

"What does your twisted mind have?" Derek asked.

"Nessie and Ness." Penelope says.

"So, the Lochness Monster." Maya says to Penelope who shakes her head.

"I'm still working on the extra details, but we will get there." Penelope says as the three of them walk into the conference room.

"I know I said we could have this weekend off, but we've got two dead cops." Hotch says.

"Alright, the resident Rod Norris, was DOA. They're still trying to ID the remains of the second victim, whom they believe to be his sixteen-year-old daughter, Jordan. From the condition of the remains, she would have had to have been inside the house, close to the source of the blast." JJ explains as Maya shakes her head.

"Clearly they used the bombing to set the officers up for an ambush." Emily says.

"That's a well-established terrorist tactic. First wave takes out civilians, the second wave takes out first responders." Spencer says.

"The locals are thinking terrorism. In West Bune, Texas?" Derek asked as Maya takes a drink of her coffee.

"It's not exactly a tier-one target, but DHS did issue a terror alert for the border states yesterday. Just due to the timing and nature of the attack--" JJ says before Derek cuts her off.

"I never heard of this place. I mean, the militia, okay, that I could see." Derek says.

"Well, it is close to the border. It could be traffickers sending a message." Emily suggests.

"Whoever it is, they gunned down two cops and blew up a teenage girl. Until they're stopped, no one in that town is safe." Rossi says.

"We need to be cautious with the locals. They've lost two of their own, they're anxious, they're scared, and they're going to want revenge." Hotch says as Rossi and Maya couldn't agree more.

"Can you blame them?" Rossi asked.

"Can't imagine why." Maya remarks.

West Bune, Texas

The team got to Bune, Texas as they all pull up to the crime scene and they meet with the sheriff.

"Sheriff Hallum? Jennifer Jareau. This is the team. Agents, Hotchner, Rossi, Dr. Reid, Prentiss, Morgan and Hart. We're really sorry for your loss." JJs says as the Sheriff shakes everyone's hands as Spencer does a quick wave.

"Thank you. Where do we start?" The Sheriff asked.

"The first victim, Rod Norris." Hotch says, as Maya is between Derek and Spencer.

"Manager of the chemical plant over in Ibias. I can't blame her for leaving him, but it's a shame she left Jordan behind." The Sheriff says.

"What can you tell us about Jordan?" Rossi asked.

"Sweet girl, a bit slow." The Sheriff says.

"Slow? Was the mentally challenged? Special ED?" Maya questioned as the Sheriff nods his head.

"Special ED, and all that stuff. Takes some talking to notice it. I think her mother leaving took its toll." He says as Maya nods her head.

"Sheriff, I'd like to go gather your people back at the office, so I can brief them all together." JJ says.

"Sure, but I'm staying here." Hallum says as JJ goes with an officer to the police station as the rest of the team stays back to look through the scene.

"The blast was localized here." Spencer says

"The room's been sealed off." Emily says.

"There's some plastic, duct tape on the door sills. Windows too." Maya points out.

"Cordite. Gun powder." Rossi says.

"They found a dozen canisters, it says." Spencer says

"The concentration of damage puts those canisters right here by the door." Emily says.

"He seals the kitchen, blows out the pilot light, trapping the gas in here, near the primary charge. If she was here, between the charge and the window--" Rossi says as Maya puts it together in her head of what Rossi was describing.

"Boom. Rod Norris ends up in the tree, Jordan ends up in the field." Maya puts together as Rossi nods his head at her.

"Exactly." Rossi said to Maya.

"They didn't care about the rest of the house though. The whole thing's designed to focus the blast on whoever came through that door." Spencer says.

"Yeah, but what was the trigger?" Rossi asked.

"Rod Norris. He was a smoker." Emily says.

"And they knew he would be coming through this door." Rossi says.

"They knew he'd be smoking when he did it." Spencer says.

Maya and Spencer go out back to meet Hotch and Derek who were with the Sheriff where Deputy Letts and Lou Savage were shot. Spencer holds Maya's hand as her balance was off due to her wearing the medical boot.

"This was personal." Hotch says.

"They knew each other?" The Sheriff asked.

"Enough to know Rod Norris would enter through the back door while smoking." Spencer says as Maya carefully walks around to get a better look at the scene.

"And that Lou Savage was ok, duty and would respond." Derek says.

"So, what are we talking about here?" The Sheriff asked.

"This wasn't terrorism, domestic or otherwise. Terrorists rarely know their victims, at least, not personally." Maya says.

"Because they know that Rod Norris was a smoker who used his back door?" Hallum questioned.

"And shot Deputy Savage in the face at point-blank range." Derek says.

"They weren't being thorough?" The Sheriff asked.

"No. He walked past Letts, who was alive, shoots Savage in the face when he knows he's already dead. Responders were coming. That last shot was risky overkill." Derek explains.

"Over kill means rage." Spencer pipes in.

"Rage means a close personal relationship." Maya adds.

"Rod Norris and Lou Savage were the specific targets of this attack." Hotch says.

"Sheriff, can you think of anyone with a close personal connection to Rod Norris and Lou Savage?" Derek asked.

"I didn't think about it, because of the terror alert." He says.

"Think about what?" Maya and Hotch say in unison, before looking at each other as Maya grins at him, making the usual grumpy man smile.

"Owen. Owen Savage. Lou's son was dating Jordan Norris. My deputies didn't find Owen at home." The Sheriff says as Maya starts to piece what happened in her head as they all go to Deputy Savage's home, as Maya was the last one to get into the car, but everyone and the Sheriff knew why.

Savage Residence

The team all walks into the Savage residence.

"How long did you know Lou Savage?" Hotch asked.

"My whole life." The Sheriff admits.

"And deputy Savage's wife?" Maya adds in.

"Hope?" The Sheriff asked turning to her.

"How did she die?" Maya asked.

"Drunk driver in '02. Lou was in Afghanistan. Owen lived with us until he got back." Hallum says.

"Semper fi." Spencer says.

"How long was Lou Savage in the Marines." Derek asked.

"12 years. He was discharged so he could raise Owen." Hallum says.

"Is that why he resented them?" Spencer questioned as Hallum looked at the genius.

"Pardon me?" Hallum asked.

"Did Lou blame his wife and son for ending his career in the Marines?" Spencer explained his question.

"Lou was a good man." Hallum says.

"A good man that doesn't have a single photo of his dead wife or only son anywhere in his entire house." Maya says.

"I know this is hard, and if we had more time, we would be more sensitive, but we don't." Hotch says as Hallum lets out a sigh.

"Hope was the drunk driver. I didn't write it up that way, but it didn't matter. Her drinking was no secret in town." Hallum admits as Maya furrowed her brows.

"Where's Owen's room?" Reid asked.

"Right over there." Hallum says as Maya goes with Reid into Owen's room. After looking around and finding nothing they walk out of the room.

"Safe is empty." Derek says.

"That's a surprise." Maya and Spencer say in unison, before they fist bumped, as they looked at the portrait of James Dean's Porsche on the wall.

"That's James Dean Porsche. No pics of James Dean though. That's a bad sign." Derek says.

"Especially when your mother died in a car accident." Spencer says.

"Still haven't found the Father of the Year award." Maya comments.

"You already checked his computer?" Derek asked.

"Its password encrypted." Spencer says.

"Well, smart move if your dad's a cop." Derek says.

"Assuming he cares enough to snoop." Maya says.

"Hey, check yourselves, you two. That sheriff out there wanted to take your hands off. I think Hotch might have let him." Derek says as Maya simply shrugs and looks into Owen's closet.

"All his clothes are black." Derek says looking around.

"Same here." Maya says.

"Just like his friend Johnny Cash. So, Owen identified with being the misunderstood loner. You know, I wish all our Unsubs would just track their profiles on their walls like this for us." Derek explains as Maya knew enough to know who Johnny Cash was. The famous country singer married to June Carter.

"It doesn't mean anything." Spencer says as both Maya and Derek look at him. "What, you grew up in Chicago, a high school jock, and you have pictures of...Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan all over your walls? Trophies everywhere?"

"And Walter Payton."

"Yeah, and not to mention the sexy ladies of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue." Derek says as Maya shook her head.

"Smart money says you didn't paint your mirrors black." Maya says.

"I guess Owen didn't like what he saw." Derek says as the three of them hear a voice outside. They walk outside to see Hallum speaking to a woman, who they realize is officer Letts' wife.

"You send them home. You don't need them. You know what to do. You find that little son of a bitch. You find him and do what's right." Sarah says as Maya sighs as she storms off.

"Why do I get the feeling she's not going to be the only one with that sentiment?" Derek asked.

"Stay here and work the room. Reid and I are going to go to the high school and talk to Owen's teachers and friends. We need to get a profile and figure out where he's going." Hotch says as Maya nods her head.

"I'll go with you, Aaron." Maya says as she walks away from the house before turning back to Derek and giving him a small wave, as he waved back.

"He's heading out of town. We found his car by the Interstate, right next to victim number five." Hallum says as they start making their way towards the high school.

West Bune High School

When they got to the school, they meet with Owen's counsellor, and he tells them all about Owen and Jordan while Spencer and Maya read through Owen's grades.

"The problem wasn't lack of effort or bad attitude. The As in Math and Science tell us he's a gifted student." Spencer says.

"The D's in English and History, tells us that he had difficulty reading, and the F in Geometry that indicates a severe problem with spatial relations. That's further confirmed by his atrocious illegible handwriting." Maya explains as Spencer nods his head.

"How do you know that, Agent?" The Counsellor asked Maya.

"I have a son who has learning disorders, and English and History aren't his forte." Maya explains to the Counsellor who nods his head.

"All consistent with a brilliant but severely learning-disabled student." Aaron says.

"Yeah, but his standardized tests didn't support that kind of intelligence." The Counsellor says.

"But a spatial-relations handicap affects your hand-eye coordination. He couldn't fill in an answer bubble any easier than he could hit a baseball." Spencer says

"Which is why he staying away from sports." Hotch say.

"Sports was a sore spot with his father. I mean, he joined the wrestling team his freshman year just to appease his old man, but that didn't work out." The Counsellor says as he gets a call, and he excuses himself as he steps away.

"He was probably the smartest kid in class and just couldn't prove it." Spencer says.

"Being the smartest kid in class is like being the only kid in class. He missed all of it." Maya adds.

"But school like this can't meet the specialized needs of every student." Aaron says.

"He gives it everything he's got over and over and over again and continues to fail, and the whole time, the whole time, they tell him it's his fault. I mean, it makes sense." Spencer says.

"It does." Maya says as she nods her head.

"No it doesn't. An undiagnosed learning disability does not add up to this level of violence. Not without severe emotional abuse. You both know that." Hotch says.

He gets a call from Derek about an MPEG on Owen's computer and they get it sent to the Counsellor's computer. The Counsellor tells us the story of how that went down.

"Cyber-bullying is a hot issue right now. The whole thing would wind up on 60 Minutes. How's that going to help Owen?" The Counsellor asked.

"What did you tell him?" Maya asked.

"I told him that dealing with bullies is part of growing up." The Counsellor says as Maya and Spencer share a look.

"That sounds familiar." Said Maya and Spencer in unison as they fist-bump, which is something that they always do, when they say something in unison.

"Boys have a way of sorting these things out for themselves." Maya nods her head.

"Yeah, they sure do." Spencer says.

"And right now, Owen's out there sorting it out with an assault rifle." Maya comments.

"Reid, Hart." Hotch says as Spencer and Maya walk out of the room.

West Bune Police Department

The team is on the phone with Penelope who was doing through the MPG.

"He deleted everything but the one .mpg. I'm walking Morgan through retrieving what he put in the trash, but I'm not sure--" Garcia says before Hotch interrupted her.

"We've got three missing kids, Garcia. We need to access Owen's email." Hotch says as she nods her head before taking a drink from her coffee.

"The kid is tech savvy, sir, but fret not I am tech savvier. Is that a word? That sounds like a word. If it is a word, I am it." Penelope says as Maya raised a brow.

"DC time, Penny." Maya says.

"Uh, 11:17. am." Penelope says.

"DC. Decaf." Maya says to Penelope who nods her head.

"Right, sorry mi amore." Penelope says as she signs off.

"Two alienated kids, no maternal presence, dysfunctional relationships with dominating fathers who withheld love. They were made for each other." Rossi says.

"As lovers, yes. But partners in crime, no. There's nothing in Jordan's profile that indicates of violence. And certainly not murder." Emily says as then Penelope comes back.

"Missed me so much, you came back?" Maya joked once she saw Penelope who nodded her head with a smile.

"I did, and a new.mpg just posted to the school social networking site. He...you need to see this." Penelope says as she sends the video to them.

Three boys were half naked on their knees with their hands behind their head while begging Owen to stop. The video ends with gunshots as Maya flinches.

"Garcia, is there any way to trace the .mpg to the computer that sent it?" Hotch asked.

"It was sent from Jordan's PDA, but Owen's hacked the SIM card. He's anonymized it. It stops the phone from transmitting its current position. Hackers do it to stop roaming charges. It's good for one call, and then the carriers turn the service off." Penelope says.

"So even if it's turned on and he's using it, we can't track it?" Rossi questions as Penelope nods her head.

"Bingo." Penelope says.

"Have the cell company leave the service on, in case he sends anything else." Hotch says.

"Yes, sir." Penelope says as she signs out.

"Let's bring in Sheriff Hallum and see if he recognizes the background." Hotch says.

Rossi, Spencer and Hotch go to the crime scene. When they get back, they start giving the profile.

"Once you've heard the profile, you'll understand." JJ says.

"We are wasting time. Owen is here, and we should be knocking on doors." Officer Lawford says says.

"That's not a good idea." Maya said to the Officer.

"And why is that, Agent?" The Officer asked.

"Because Owen's watching. He's monitoring the news. Right now, he thinks you think he's gone. He feels safe. If we start knocking on doors, he's going to know that he's not. He's going to feel trapped." Hotch says.

"Why the hell should we care about this little bastard's feelings?" The Officer asked, as Maya gives the Officer a glare.

"We're here to help you bring in Owen Savage with minimum loss of life. Our profile tells you the best way to do that. So we suggest you shut your trap and listen, like everyone else." Maya snapped at the Officer as she felt Spencer grabbing her hand.

"Owen Savage fits the profile of a type of school shooter known as an injustice collector. He's trying to avenge perceived wrongs." Spencer says.

"If he's a school shooter, why hasn't he hit the school yet?" Hallum asked.

"Jordan. Most of these guys are so angry and hopeless, they just want to kill as many as possible and commit suicide. Both Jordan gives him a reason to live." Emily says as Maya nods her head.

"Otherwise, he's a textbook case. His life was one torment after another. His teachers gave up on him, his classmates bullied him, and his father blames him while giving him access to guns. Given these conditions, you're actually quite fortunate." Spencer explains.

"It sounds like you're saying these victims deserved this." Officer Lawford accuses.

"We're not. Nobody deserves this, by any means." Hotch says.

"But you could've prevented it." Maya snarked back.

"Reid, Hart, can I talk to you two?" Hotch says as Maya sighs as she follows Hotch into an empty room with Spencer.

"It's the truth." Spencer says.

"It is. They could have done something. They work with his father. They knew Owen." Maya adds.

"So what? All adolescents profile like sociopaths. There's a reason you can't diagnose them until they're 18." Hotch says as Maya nods her head.

"Yeah, and they could have seen the signs!" Spencer exclaims.

"Nobody sees the signs, Reid. You know that. So do you, Maya, and making it their fault is not only unfair, but also dangerous. I want you both to go back to the Savage house, and I want you to go through Owen's room." Hotch says.

"Isn't Derek already doing that?" Maya asked.

"Yeah, and you're going to join him. You know this kid better than anybody else. Go find us something we can use." Hotch says as Maya nods her head.

Maya follows Spencer out of the station.

Savage Residence

Maya is sitting next to Spencer while they are going through Owen's computer. Spencer has Maya handling the computer, which is fine, as when Penelope was in the hospital she was working on Penelope's computers. That and also because Penelope only trusted Maya.

"Garcia restored those emails." Derek says.

"Yeah, Maya and i are sorting through them right now." Spencer says.

"You're not the only one who identifies with him." Derek says as Maya turns to him.

"I want some story time." Maya says which made Derek shake his head a little.

"Reid, you said I was a high school jock. I was. But not at first. My freshman year, I was 5'3. I weighed a buck-twenty soaking wet. So, trust me when I tell you, I got my ass kicked every day. So, the following summer, I hit the weights and I got lucky, I grew six inches. But it was never about vanity, Reid. It was about survival." Derek says.

"I was in the library, and uh...Harper Hillman comes up to me and she tells me that Alexa Isben wants me to meet me behind the field house. Alexa Isben was, like...easily the prettiest girl in school." Spencer says.

"So, what happened? Alexa wasn't there?" Derek asked.

"She was there. So was the entire football team. They...stripped me naked and tied me to a goal post. So many kids were there, you know just watching." Spencer says.

"Nobody tried to stop them?" Derek says.

"I begged them to, but they just...they just watched. Then finally, they got bored, and they left. It was, like, midnight when I finally got home. And my mom didn't. my mom was having one of her episodes, so she didn't realize I was late." Spencer says.

"You never told her what happened?" Derek asked.

"I never told anybody. I thought it was one of those things that I thought if I didn't talk about it, I'd just forget. But I remember like it was yesterday." Spencer says as Maya wipes a couple tears.

"Reid, you don't need an eidetic memory for that. You know, we forget half of what they teach us in school. But when it comes to the torment and the people who inflicted it, we've all got an elephant's memory." Derek says.

"Owen just wants to forget. I know what that's like." Spencer says as Maya nods her head.

"So do I." Maya muttered but Derek and Spencer heard her.

"You do?" Spencer asked Maya as she nods her head.

"Wanna talk about it, Mama?" Derek asked as she shook her head.

"Not really." Maya nods her head.

"He's been making a big deal out of saying goodbye to Jordan in all of his emails, none of it shortened. That's odd." Derek says.

"He never got the chance to say goodbye to his mother." Spencer adds.

"Abandonment is his biggest fear. That's why he's close to Jordan. He thinks she'll never leave." Maya says, as the three of them go back to the station to talk to Hotch.

"Owen's mother's death left him with severe issues of abandonment." Spencer says.

"If we can get Jordan away from him, we'll save her and take away his reason to live." Maya says.

"He'll take his own life." Hotch says.

"It's the only way we can save Jordan." Derek says.

"How can we get her to leave him?" Hotch asked.

"He's kept Jordan in the dark. She doesn't know about the murders." Spencer says.

"You want to tell her." Hotch says to Maya as she nods her head.

"If we can." Maya says.

"We can get her to turn herself in." Emily says.

"But even if we could talk to her, the only person she trusts is Owen." Hotch says.

"There's one other reason. She might be able to get a message to Jordan." Emily says.

Maya goes with Hotch to Jordan's best friend's house to message Jordan on her PDA. Owen ends up finding about the team. Shortly after they get back to the station, Jordan walks in. Emily and JJ manage to convince Jordan to tell them where Owen was, and Maya goes with Hotch and Spencer to the ranch where they found a body with a half-dug grave. Maya didn't want Owen to get killed so she went back with Spencer to the station.

They figure out that he was coming to get his mother's necklace back, so he wasn't going to her grave. He was coming back to the station. They run outside and look around for Owen. Spencer talks to Owen and in the end, Owen complies and puts the gun down. He hands Spencer the necklace and Derek cuffs him before bringing him into the station. They bring Owen to Jordan and Spencer hands Jordan the necklace before bringing him into custody.

BAU Jet

After the case the team settled in on the jet where some napped, played poker. The ones who played poker was Maya and Spencer. Spencer was shocked when he lost the poker game against Maya. He looked up at her in disbelief that he lost against Maya.

"How did you learn to play?" He asked her as he tried thinking what he did wrong, to lose.

"Spencer, I have known you enough to know how to play. What do you think I do half the time?" Maya says to him as she gets up as Derek laughs from standing.

"That's no fair. I never lose." Spencer says with a slight huff.

"Poor baby." Derek teased as Maya ruffled has hair as she walked away.
