Nicholas didn't answer. He knew who it was. He could feel it.

EJ stepped inside. Quiet. Casual. His usual calm-but-lethal presence. The same one that Nicholas had, apparently, been obsessing over in great detail.

Nicholas didn't look up. "Just say it."

"Say what?"

"That you're flattered but not interested and that you'd like to go back to being normal groupmates and pretend I didn't just emotionally implode into a mic."

EJ smiled.

He stepped closer.

"You really think I'd pretend that didn't happen?" he said gently.

Nicholas looked up. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

"Maybe a little."

"...Can I die now?"

"No."

EJ sat next to him, close. Too close.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.

Nicholas swallowed. "You're literally our leader. You have, like, four things more important than my dumb crush every hour of the day. I didn't wanna mess that up."

"You didn't mess anything up."

Nicholas blinked. "No?"

EJ shrugged. "If anything... you gave me permission to stop pretending too."

"...Wait."

EJ smiled again. "You talk a lot when you panic. I listen a lot when I fall."
