Unconscious
"No! No! No!"
Liam woke from a nightmare, finding himself lying in a hospital bed with Olivia and his friends by his side.
He forced a weak smile. "I just had a nightmare about Evelyn getting into a car accident. It was terrifying."
The others responded with silence.
Liam felt a sense of helplessness. "That wasn't a dream, was it?"
"How's Evelyn? Is she alright?" he asked, struggling to get up and find her.
"Her condition isn't good," Olivia replied, her voice heavy with concern.
"The doctor said she suffered a severe head injury, resulting in significant brain bleeding and swelling. She's in a deep coma right now. She might stay in a coma for a long time, and there's a chance she could become a vegetative state. The longer she stays unconscious, the higher the probability."
Hearing this, Liam felt as if he'd been struck by lightning. His face turned pale, and his hands trembled uncontrollably, his eyes filled with disbelief and immense pain.
"This can't be happening... No, Evelyn won't stay like this. She will wake up. She has to wake up... Evelyn, please,"
Liam murmured, his voice almost inaudible but filled with despair and pleading. Tears quickly welled up in his eyes and streamed down uncontrollably. He covered his face with his hands, sobbing in agony.
"It's all my fault. If I hadn't chased her in the car, she wouldn't have gotten hurt... Evelyn, you can't leave me like this..."
In the hospital room, Evelyn lay quietly in her bed, surrounded by various medical monitors and beeping machines. Her face remained beautiful, as if she were merely asleep.
But every time Liam looked at her closed eyes, the pain in his heart became unbearable.
Liam moved into the hospital, setting up his office next to Evelyn's room.
He refused to leave her side, personally taking care of her daily needs. He bathed her, gently brushed her hair, fed her liquid food, and even read their favorite books to her. He hoped that she could hear the familiar sounds and feel his presence, finding her way back to him.
Every morning, Michael would arrive with a cart full of documents.
Liam managed his work from the hospital room while staying close to Evelyn. No matter how busy he was, he constantly monitored her condition. He would meticulously note down every detail whenever the doctors made their rounds.
Olivia and Liam's friends often visited him, feeling a mix of sadness and sympathy as they saw him devote himself to Evelyn day after day.
"Liam, you can't keep doing this. You need to take care of yourself too," Olivia urged during one of her visits.
Liam looked up, his eyes bloodshot but his expression resolute.
"I can't leave her. She needs me. I promised to stay with her always."
"We know how much you care for Evelyn, but if you keep going like this, your own health will suffer," Oliver added.
Liam managed a faint smile. "I'm fine. As long as Evelyn can feel my presence, as long as there's a chance she'll wake up, it's all worth it."
His friends looked at Liam's exhausted but determined face, feeling both moved and heartbroken. They knew Liam truly loved Evelyn, but they also knew that this path would eventually break him.
As night fell and the hospital lights dimmed, Liam held Evelyn's hand gently, whispering, "Evelyn, I'm here. I will never leave you. No matter how long it takes, I'll be here when you wake up."
He knew the days ahead would be tough, but he was determined to stay by the side of the woman he loved, waiting for the day she opened her eyes.
Time flowed by like a river, but Liam's constant care and vigilance failed to bring Evelyn back.
After several consultations, the doctors finally told Liam, "Mr. Montgomery, it's highly unlikely that Evelyn will wake up. The chances of her becoming a vegetative state are very high."
Hearing this, Liam felt as though he had been plunged into an icy abyss. He couldn't accept this harsh reality; the despair and pain almost drove him mad.
He was determined to try anything to wake Evelyn, no matter how far-fetched.He started exploring all possible methods, hoping to find a way to awaken Evelyn.
Liam heard ancient folk tales about certain rituals and mystical ceremonies that could awaken those in a coma. He began contacting supposed fortune tellers, shamans, and mediums with miraculous powers.
He visited an old shaman living in the suburbs, who was rumored to communicate with souls and awaken those in deep slumber. The shaman performed several complex rituals for Evelyn, burning mysterious herbs and chanting ancient spells.
Liam watched tensely, hoping for a miracle. However, after each ritual, Evelyn remained unresponsive.
The shaman regretfully told Liam, "Her soul is deeply asleep. There's nothing more I can do."
Liam didn't give up.
He contacted a medium who claimed to communicate with the souls of the comatose.
Liam arranged a meeting, and under the medium's guidance, he closed his eyes, attempting to reach Evelyn's soul through meditation. The medium's voice was low and gentle.
"Evelyn, your beloved is here. He needs you. Hear his call and return to his side."
Liam called Evelyn's name with all his heart, tears streaming down his face.
But after the session, Evelyn remained in her deep sleep. The medium shook his head sadly.
"Her soul is deeply trapped. Unless the true cause is found, it's unlikely she'll wake."
Liam learned of an ancient church in a small English village said to possess holy water capable of healing all wounds and ailments.
Desperate, he flew to England and found the church in the remote village.
The priest, seeing the exhaustion and determination in Liam's eyes, agreed to pray for Evelyn and gave him some holy water. Liam gratefully accepted, returning to the hospital. He carefully used the holy water to wipe Evelyn's body, praying for a miracle.
Despite his efforts, Evelyn remained asleep.
Each failure weighed heavily on Liam's heart, but he never gave up.
He believed that if he kept trying, one day, Evelyn would open her eyes again.
While seeking ways to awaken Evelyn, Liam also pursued the truth behind her father's death.
He knew that only by uncovering the mystery could he truly alleviate Evelyn's hatred and pain, allowing them to reconcile when she awoke.
Liam mobilized all the company's resources to reinvestigate the details of Evelyn's father's company's bankruptcy.
He personally scrutinized every detail, seeking out the hidden secrets of the past.Meanwhile, he continued managing the company's affairs. Despite his inner turmoil, he knew he couldn't fall apart. He had to keep the company running smoothly, for Evelyn and for the employees who trusted him.
His room turned into a battlefield, one side piled with company documents, the other with materials on mysticism and rituals. He slept only a few hours a day, dedicating the rest of his time to work and research.
Liam was working when there was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
It was Olivia.
"Liam, you need to rest. You're even thinner than last time I saw you. The last time you looked like this was when our brother had his accident. This was just an accident, Liam. You always take the blame for others' mistakes."
"But I indirectly caused both of these accidents," Liam said, full of self-reproach.
"You know, I want Evelyn to wake up soon, but I'm also afraid she'll wake up too soon. The doctors said the sooner she wakes up, the better her chances of recovery. But I'm afraid if she wakes up and I still can't prove my innocence, she'll leave me. Maybe it's better like this, where I can watch over her every day."
"I know you're in pain. I understand," Olivia said, hugging Liam.
"Promise me you'll get some rest, okay? You can't handle investigating the truth, running the company, and taking care of Evelyn all at once. Even a machine would break down."
"Okay, I understand."
"Alright, I'll go now. Goodbye."
The light stayed on all night again.
One day, Michael brought some good news.
"We've found some clues about the bankruptcy of Evelyn's father's company that you might find interesting."He handed Liam a file.
"We spent a lot of time tracking down the former executives of MM Company(Evelyn's father's company). They said MM sent us two loan requests, none of which included a withdrawal request.
According to our records, just as we were about to grant MM a loan, we received a withdrawal request supposedly from them. So, the company used the money elsewhere. Later, when we were cash-strapped, we received another request from MM, but by then we couldn't help them."
"So, someone from MM forged a withdrawal request," Liam concluded.
"Which directly led to MM's bankruptcy and Mr. Bennett's death. But who would do that?"
"People act out of self-interest. The company's bankruptcy wouldn't benefit any MM employee. The biggest beneficiary of MM's bankruptcy was TechNova, which acquired it. But that was just a normal business strategy. TechNova had no grudge against MM."
"The person who did this wasn't motivated by profit. It was revenge. They wanted to see MM bankrupt and Mr. Bennett dead,"
Liam speculated.
"First, the person had to be a high-level employee to know the company's situation. Second, they had to be close enough to Mr. Bennett to forge a message without being caught.
Michael, investigate MM's executives and see if anyone joined the company right before the bankruptcy."
"I understand. I'll look into it,"
Michael said, leaving to follow the lead.
